Since Gintama tends to focus more on platonic relationships such as father-and-daughter, brother-and-sisters, Teacher-and-student or just camaraderie bonds in general, what do you think about Tsukuyo and Hinowa's relationship?

Obvious question, I know. But would still love to hear your take on this!

I bet you came from Tip of my tongue and my incessant ramblings about the courtesan's interpersonal relationships (imma be honest, Tip of my tongue is kind-of a study about Gintama's Yoshiwara).

Sorachi takes some licenses when it comes to Edo, mostly for simplicity's sake (see how he simplified the Gosanke and the Gosankyō), while still maintaining some historical references. According to Cecilia Segawa Seigle, the most famous and well-versed Yoshiwara scholar, courtesans treating each other harshly, especially young ones —what Kamekichi did— was the exception, and not the norm.

In any case, it's pretty clear that Hinowa took Tsukuyo as her kamuro, aka her apprentice and sister. I honestly don't know if Tsukuyo managed to get to the rank of shinzō before Jiraia took her, I haven't given that much thought. For Tsukuyo to be Hinowa's kamuro means that she was responsible for feeding her, clothing her, share courtesan knowledge with her (not about sex, that wasn't the main point of being a courtesan) and in general, her well-being. In return, Tsukuyo had to behave well and made her proud in order to not sully her reputation. In the end, a courtesan reaching higher ranks was not only tied to what she did, but how the sisters that were in her charge were perceived by others.

So I think it is a sisterly bond that goes beyond what is normal. Hinowa risked everything for Tsukuyo, because that was courtesan life was about... but in the end, it evolved into something else. And I think that is beautiful.

Tsukuyo's devotion towards Hinowa probably stems not only from her big sis being a complete sunshine (almost literally), but also as a form of debt to be repaid, because she failed at being a courtesan in the traditional way of being one, something of which Hinowa was responsible for.

Top 5 gntm charas ?

The answer to this question depends on the alignment of the planets, my mood, recently read fanfics or rewatched arcs and so on. That being said, top 3 rarely changes.

1. Imai Nobume / Sasaki Isaburo

I could probably write a thesis on this, tbh... I like characters that decide to immolate themselves, and I like flawed ones. Isaburo is full of that. For all intends and purposes, I consider him Nobume's father, but he was far from perfect. I wrote about this last year, so I'm gonna copy-paste that bit:

(On why I liked the 'plot-twist' that Nobume didn't actually kill his family.)

Because otherwise their development would’ve been inexistent, and Isaburo’s character would’ve been flat af. And because if Sorachi took the easy route (having Nobume kill his family for real) that would’ve gone against the core of Gintama, which is “rotten bonds”: it would’ve been flawless, and he would’ve been the perfect father, which we know at this point no one is in this universe.

Isaburo’s redemption is one of a father, not one of a samurai (and this is something we see with Jirocho, and to some extent with Kankou). By his own admission, he knew from the start that there was a high probability that Nobume wasn’t the one who carried on the assassination and yet he decided to point his sword at her and put a very heavy burden on her back: to kill for him, and then use that same sword to end him when he burns the Bakufu to the ground. That was, of course, a shitty thing to do —and we can blame grief, rage, whatever, and we would probably be right— to a kid you knew that maybe tried to help. A kid that you tried to help —Nobume mentions that she suspected he tried to save the Naraku orphans.

When Nobume I (his newborn daughter) dies, so does the father in him, the one that made him fond of Kondo and gave him hope of a better world for her, thus making him stop the Hitotsubashi assassination that ultimately led to his family’s demise.

Also, Nobume trying to stop the assassination —and maybe even going against Oboro’s orders— fulfills Shoyou’s teachings. I’m pretty sure it’s the only instance when she can fulfill those teachings because after that she starts killing for Isaburo’s sake.

He made her leader of an assassination squad. So, as much as I love to preach that Isaburo is one hell of a father, their start is a bit toxic lol.

This journey, from roping a girl who wanted to stop killing into killing again, to giving her the name of his daughter to admitting to her that the promise he made her take was dragging her down and asking her to be free, is what makes his redemption arc so compelling, because he finally dies as a father, wishing all the best for his daughter. That wouldn’t have worked if she was the real killer, imo. All those things, all those failures as a father that we perceive, would’ve been justified (“because she was the killer”).

His redemption and journey as a man who choose a child to bear his hatred and execute people on its basis to a loving father would’ve been incomplete and pointless.

As for Nobume, I think she is a great character with lots of room to grow. Not that we are going to see that, but we know that she has killed some of Isaburo's/the Hitotsubashi's political enemies, caused the downfall of the head of the Ikeda clan and Shigeshige's death, almost got Kondo and Matsudaira killed —which in the process caused the demise of plenty of men— and finally turned her back to the Hitotsubashi.

(Isaburo admited to being a bad commander iirc, so more kudos to him for being an Elite imperfect man.)

So... sure, by the time the Silver Soul time-skip happens she is a corrupt official (which I think is very sexy of her, btw, second echelon in the command chain in the Police National System, only Matsudaira is above her), but I bet my ass she has to deal with not only guilt but a shitton of political enemies, bot hers and Soyo's. And I really wish we saw more of her and her relationship with Kondo & Hijikata as their superior.

To sum it up: I think she's neat and Isaburo not only made her kill for him but also turned her into a political shark.

2. Takasugi Shinsuke

Refer to the above point about characters and immolation lmao. I love that he is a very emotional and vulnerable man. I don't think he hides that fact, btw. I know people like to say he's an edgelord, and he is, but he is very open about the fact that he is hurting, that a part of him died, and I rarely see that in shonen charas.

3. Tsukuyo

:') The moon. Selfless. As opposed to Isaburo, Tsukuyo is a good commander to her troops. It isn't easy to be a good person when you are in a world like Yoshiwara's, but I find that Tsukuyo is a simple woman with straightforward goals. In that regard, she reminds me of Gintoki: both of them don't ask too much from life, just peace and quiet for their loved ones to thrive.

4. Gintoki

Essays have been written about the stinky samurai. I just think he's neat, even if he wears boots without socks. He should get therapy for his PTSD, of course. Praying that Soyo makes mental health universally available during the course of her mandate.

5. Mayora / Sarutobi / Kondo

They are stupid but good at their job, and I absolutely adore that. My preference switches sometimes but it's always one of those. I love that Sarutobi wears her feelings on her sleeve. I do believe Kondo is a fucking catch (and that Hinowa deserves a good man so here I am in this rarepair hell with Lara and a few other lost souls) and a bad commander, but not in a destructive way (like Isaburo), it's just that he's more of a friend than a superior, which in the end is detrimental. And Mayora...

Look, Hijikata is fucking hilarious. He's so emotionally stunted I want to slap him, but he's loyal to a fault, and I respect that very much.

GO WATCH/READ SPY x FAMILY

I have just finished watching episode one and also screaming gleefully because finally, this long awaited moment that I've always wanted ever since I decided to read this series has finally come and to see that it is getting more love from the people than before and appreciating it is more than enough to make me the happiest person.

See, despite the title, I am not here to make some kind of essay how Spy x Family will revolutionize the world and end world hunger (but believe me, I will read that if ever someone will make it 😆) or something. I only came to Tumblr because I am still a giddy idiot that can't contain her happiness with just episode 1 so she's here to blast it all in one go cause she'll flood her darn twitter wwww

Still, please go watch or read the series if you love the perfect formula of action, comedy, family wholesomeness and some razzle dazzle of romance here and there! 💖

Her VA, Atsumi Tanezaki-san really brought out her character, too! I love her very much just from the manga but actually hearing her plus all the little noises she makes is what really makes her even more lovable and I appreciate Atsumi-san for that ❤️

6 years old, which she only made up to be adopted by Loid is already too young enough as it is. For her to be experimented, used like a lab rat only to run away from said facility. Yet, even after that, she was tossed away from family to family because she just can't fit in.

She's just a child damn it. Let her experience it ; - ;

Loid being a child abandoned in an ongoing war and only wishes that other children won't experience what he did so he did his job to the fullest...

Snippets of scenes from each of the family's past like this hurts me on a spiritual level.

But that's exactly why, I cherish their happy family moments. Even with the painful past they had to endure to get to where they are now, they moved forward from it to get to where they are.

Just broken people that lived strong for themselves and eventually found a place they could call home together 💖

The ending song which I vibed with already the first time I listened to it, now also holds quite the special place in my heart just as much as the series. It holds everything that I love for a series. The specific genre/theme I look for.

I could make a whole 'nother bullcrap of an essay just about this ending song and how it resonates with me but let's leave that for another day 😆

Before I even rewatched Gintama again after so many years, which I've already forgotten about the story, I was able to read this masterpiece first.

I am saying this quite early even though the series is still pretty much new and there are only few arcs to judge it but the perfect combination of genres and how well it was executed along with the beautiful artstyle was what drew me into it. And a wide variety of cast whether minor or major, some that appear only for a short arc, holds their own personality which makes almost everyone atleast likable for me.

That's what draws me into a series because the characters itself are what makes the story.

(Though I am just rambling to myself, no this is not a this is better than this and that copied that.)

Maybe that's why, despite having completely different plots, Gintama and Spy x Family has such similar themes working around them that I can't help merging the two ( and even making silly crosover fanarts 😆)

Aaaaand that's really all I have going. I probably already exhausted enough excess energy I had to be able to write this wwww

Overall, this adaption was all I could ask for! I will be waiting for each episode every Saturday which makes me have something to look forward for every week 💖 And well, maybe I could also sorta go back to making more Spy x Gintama thingy since I still have some ideas left to do 😆

Plus, nothing makes me more than happy to have Anya and Kagura drawn side by side ❤️

I'm really excited to see Yor and Bond be introduced!!!! Would really love to see the Forger Family be completed 💖
