Ok i am not by any means a the last of us scholar - I watched gameplays of parts 1 and 2 and the show. Thus take this with a grain of salt. But I think the “Ellie is inherently violent” narrative kinddddddd of slays. Because… of course she is. Look at the society she was raised in. She grew up in a military school, she’s trained to be a killer. Her instincts are violent ones, from the very beginning. Joel is not - he trained himself to be violent, to shut off human emotion. He loved, and then he lost everything and instead of grieving he became hollow with loss. And then Ellie lets him remember love, parental love, which Ellie has never really known. Ellie’s primary feedback system is violence/non-violence. When Joel acts with love, in a violent manner, FOR her (has anyone ever acted FOR HER?) she is resigned to understanding that whatever moral system she learned in school doesn’t apply to what this “real life” actually looks like. And i think this is kinda interesting with regards to instinct/nature. Ellie maybe has a violent nature, but her instincts aren’t hardened by years of doing shitty things, like Joel. Joel’s nature is softer and is unearthed by Ellie, but his instincts are violent. Part of what makes this story so compelling is that you as the viewer have to like the characters despite the brutality and the violence. It’s just survival, and everyone is the hero of their own story. But in a violent world, everyone is violent. Or they’re dead. Either way, everyone’s life is so fucking horrible that playing the morality card is almost laughable. It’s about the privilege that WE get to know that Joel is killing half the population of Salt Lake City because he loves Ellie, because Ellie taught him how to love again. Then conversely, we have to reckon with Abby killing Joel because she loved her father. When we see Abby kill Ellie’s friends, Abby doesn’t care who they are. Same as Joel killing… everyone else. Ellie too. One of the many tragedies is that everyone you take out in the game is a survivor too, with their loved ones and violences and griefs.
