You're telling me, this mix of a kid between jock and nerd, who struggles with the idea of masculinity, who is trying his best, wouldn't immediately be adopted by Steve? The same Steve who went through literally everything Lucas did??

You're really going to look me in the eyes and tell me that Steve and Lucas aren't close when you know. You know that when the hellfires obvious distrust of anything mainstream gets too much Steve takes Lucas out to run basketball drills. When you know that when Dustin's teasing and Mike's dicking around gets too much, Lucas uses basketball terms -things he knows Steve's familiar with- to help him understand. When you know that Steve fights tooth and nail to get Lucas off the bench, and he's the first person Lucas tells when it happens, and he's the one who's the loudest when Lucas walks into rhe court.

You're telling me Lucas and Steve aren't close when Lucas sees this big, popular jock masthead, and then learns that he's a good guy actually, and sees him use his emotions and talk to others and think, huh, maybe being emotional isn't unmasculine or whatever the fuck. You're telling me they're not close when Steve sees this tiny child that's very obviously a nerd but is so inspired by what he's capable of that he learns to fight for and about what he likes and thinks, huh, maybe my worth is more than eye candy.

You're really going to ignore the fact that for Lucas, Steve is most likely as good representation as he'll get that being a not so nice person in the past isn't forever. That he can change and apologize and it'll still be manly. When Steve is the first person to teach him to gap a bridge between his nerd friends and hobbies and his mainstream ones, that being unapologetic and "freaky" can be about having a place in more that one social groups as much as being the metalhead nerd. When Steve teaches him that just because his brand of weird is different than his friends, he's not less. When Steve let's him teach him DnD, and use him to understand to accept that he can like things even when people think he shouldn't -jocks and needs both.

And then you're going to turn around and ignore the fact that for Steve, Lucas is most likely one of the few he can admit to favoring. Because he can see himself in Lucas in a way he can't with others, because he knows what it feels like to feel trapped because either side will reject you. When he feels as happy as Lucas does when he gets to shoot both the winning hoop, and the dragon killing fireball (or dagger slash, pardon me if I get that wrong.) When Lucas takes time to explain to him how DnD works, and Steve listens because he can see that it helps Lucas heal. When he knows he's worth much more than being stupid, or just a piece of meat, when Lucas shoves him but hands him tickets to his next game -the best seats too.

Steve and Lucas bond over being neither freaks nor jocks and how weird that makes them both. They bond over how to not fit in correctly anywhere, and they teach each other how to carve out their place, if the others won't offer it to them.

And I think that's really special.
