My final project is complete! Getting from start to finish has been a wild journey but I’m so happy with how everything turned out. I’m very excited to introduce my original characters.

Artist Statement and Installation under the cut

La La Lune is a character design project featuring celestial magical girls. I aimed to create an initially small group that’s diverse in design and background with room to grow in numbers. Each character is based on their own constellation, this group focusing on the three that make up the Summer Triangle: Stella Cygnus (pink), Stella Lyra (blue), and Stella Aquila (yellow). The Stella’s not only come from the stars, but are stars themselves. Born from the cosmic dust from their respective constellations, they help to sooth the Nightmares, which are rogue cosmos dust touched by the Great Rift. Nightmares become stuck in an embryonic state, not yet fully formed as a child of the stars.

My process emphasized themes and symbolism for each design. Stella Cygnus is inspired by Swan Lake’s Odette. Stella Lyra ties in the themes of Apollo, the god who gifted the lyre to Orpheus. Stella Aquila’s theme is an eagle as is the namesake, but also conveys a royalty and princess-like appearance to tie back to Zeus, king of the Gods, who’s lightning bolts the eagle carries.
