Nash Edgerton
Nash Edgerton tells me about how he and his brother Joel first fell in love with movies as kids and how he decided to become a stuntman. He shares how he started making his own mini-movie clips to help him get jobs as a stunt performer, and how this sparked an interest in filmmaking. This led to a handful of highly acclaimed short films and eventually, to his award winning feature film "The Square", music videos for Bob Dylan and Brandon Flowers and his second feature film "Gringo."
We talk about meeting Scott Ryan after watching a screening of "The Magician" at a film festival and their subsequent collaboration on the phenomenal TV show "Mr Inbetween" (FX).
Nash tells me about the importance of being fluid when directing, how he works with actors and how he prepares for each project.

Nash Edgerton first made his name as an accomplished and highly sought after stunt actor, with credits that include two Star Wars movies, all three Matrix movies, Zero Dark Thirty, Superman Returns and many more.
When he first started, he needed a show reel to get jobs, but couldn’t make a reel because he wasn't booking any jobs. So, he made his first reel by writing, shooting and editing his own, made up movie clips.
Thereafter, he started making short films and directing music videos—amongst others for Bob Dylan and Brandon Flowers.
He went on to direct two feature films and 3 full seasons of the phenomenal TV show Mr Inbetween (which you can find on FX).
Nash is always busy and I’m grateful that he found the time to speak with me about his career and his approach to filmmaking.

INTRO Welcome to episode six of Myth vs. Craft.
My guest today is the legendary Mike Campbell. He’s a founding member of the Heartbreakers and has been Tom Petty’s guitarist and co-captain since 1970.
Mike’s songwriting and musicianship are fundamental components of the Heartbreakers’ sound and success. In addition to his work with Tom Petty, he’s collaborated with a who’s who list of artists, including Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Don Henley, Johnny Cash, Stevie Nicks and many more.
In my opinion, Mike is the most underrated guitarist in rock music. I’m embarrassed to admit that I was guilty of this myself. Though I grew up listening to his music, it wasn’t until 2011 that I had my eureka moment with Mike.
I was watching TV and came across the Soundstage special with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. As I watched them perform two things hit me: (1) it was unbelievable how many great songs this band was playing—hearing them back-to-back really hammered home the depth and quality of their catalogue—and (2), Mike Campbell’s guitar playing was as tasteful & impeccable as I’d seen.
On every single song, Mike managed to somehow play exactly what the song needed, no more and no less. My admiration for him went through the roof that night, and as you can imagine, I was thrilled when he agreed to be a guest on this show.
I spoke with Mike a few days after he played a fundraiser for the Tazzy Animal Rescue Fund. Tazzy is a phenomenal non-profit that rescues dogs, gets them medical attention and helps them find good homes. This year they started rescuing dogs from shelters and training them to be placed with veterans suffering from PTSD, a physical injury or simply in need of the companionship that only a dog can provide.
I hope you find a moment to visit their website at www.tazzyfund.com and consider making a donation to rescue dogs and help veterans get back on their feet.
Here is my conversation with Mike.

INTRO My guest today is the legendary session guitarist Tim Pierce.
Tim toured with Rick Springfield for a few years in the early 80’s and subsequently decided to focus on being a studio musician.
You may not know it, but you’ve heard Tim play guitar on hundreds if not thousands of songs.
He’s recorded with Michael Jackson, Joe Cocker. Rod Stewart, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Phil Collins and Madonna. How about Don Henley, Santana, Tracy Chapman, Faith Hill, Celine Dion, John Legend, Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson, Josh Groban... Everyone.
I think his resounding success is a result not only of his focus and talent, but also of his work ethic and personality. Tim has managed to stay incredibly busy for over three decades, which I think is a testament to how good he is and how masterful he’s been at continually evolving his style and his sound. It’s no wonder that Guitar World named him one of the of the top 5 session guitarists of all time.
Tim was kind enough to find time in between sessions to speak with me and share a number of stories and great insights. Let’s start by listening to how he fell in love with music.

SIMO tours nonstop and I highly encourage you to go see them if they play near you. I’ll be going to their show here in Austin this Thursday.
