“Everything is a Remix “by Kirby Ferguson is a four-part video series in which he claims that borrowing from others is the ultimate driver of progress in the arts, technology, and society. Ferguson believes everything is a remediation of existing material, e.g. music, film, etc. Ferguson’s concepts of “copy, transform, and combine” help convey his message that it is nearly impossible to create something without drawing inspiration from something else; in some cases, people will directly sample existing material while creating their own.

After two years of hard work, the new-and-improved everything is a Remix is complete! All four parts have been combined into a single, hour-long video (!), unfortunately making this a wrap for his career as an internet filmmaker (his words).

Elements of early blog culture tried to update the diary form for the online realm, but that moment has now passed. Unlike the blog entries of the Web 2.0 era, social media have surpassed the summary stage of the diary in a desperate attempt to keep up with real-time regime. Instagram Stories, for example, bring back the nostalgia of an unfolding chain of events— and then disappear at the end of the day, like a revenge act, a satire of ancient sentiments gone by. Storage will make the pain permanent. Better forget about it and move on.
