Messages from Gaza Now 3 | SYMPOSIUM
This is the third event at which we will be sharing texts and messages we have received since October 7th from our colleagues and friends in Gaza. We will be reading all the accounts sent by our partners in Theatre for Everybody received up to the day of the event. Our Messages from Gaza Now events on Tuesday 24th October and Tuesday 7th November gave participants a deep and detailed insight on the human consequences of the attack on Gaza.
"Cry, baby, cry my son, no shame, cry as much as you want, cry as much as you were afraid, cry until your cries reach the sky or reach a moving heart somewhere in this mad world!"
Hossam Madhoun's accounts tell the whole story of the evacuation, the impact of the 'complete siege', the bombing, the effort to help neighbours and displaced people, the shortages and the confrontation with human suffering. This will be the first comprehensive reading of this testimony.
The texts will be read, as at our previous gatherings, by a group of artists and others who have assembled themselves around our GAZA: THERE & HERE project. This event is a chance to breathe into the personal experiences of Palestinians in the crisis caused by genocidal violence. Listening and bearing witness together we can deepen our sense of solidarity and love.

Ramzi Mallat in conversation with Najlaa El-Ageli and Yahya Zaloom
Artist Ramzi Mallat will be in conversation with Yahya Zaloom, director of P21 Gallery and independent curator Najlaa El-Ageli. The talk will provide insight into the artist's practice and cover themes regarding Fault Lines, his solo exhibition on show at the gallery.
Artist: Ramzi Mallat is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores the socio-political impact of globalisation on notions of identity and self. Mallat draws on a rich tapestry of theological and folkloric history of the Levant region, his work challenging the conventional notion of tradition as a civilisational legacy by revealing a narrative based on a society’s cultural vanguard in the course of a struggle. The artist has been appointed a Trustee for the IMOS Foundation in the United Kingdom and was selected as one of Forbes Middle East’s 30 Under 30 Honorers in 2022. His most recent short documentary has been awarded the 'Official Selection' laurel by the Scarab Film Festival in Dubai, UAE, the Story International Student Film Festival in Cork, Ireland and the Lebanese Independent Film Festival
Panelist: Najlaa El-Ageli founded Noon Arts Projects in 2012 with a mission to bring the best of contemporary art from the MENA region, from both emerging and established artists, and expose it to the world stage. She was selected to be a member of the jury for ‘The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC) 2016 and 2019, and sat as member of the board for The London Prints Studio from 2017 to 2020.
Moderator: Yahya Zaloom is Artistic Director of P21 Gallery, a London-based charitable trust promoting contemporary Arab art and culture, committed to creating visibility for Arab artists worldwide. Yahya holds a BA in Mixed Media Fine Arts (University of Westminster, London), an MA in Visual Culture (University of Westminster, London), and currently studying MA in Art Curation by practice (University of Teesside, Middlesbrough).

Ramzi Mallat - 'Shock and Awe'
This Arabic saying translates to “Magic of the East” and becomes “Magic of Evil” as the last letter fades from the composition.
Provocatively titled 'Shock & Awe', Ramzi Mallat (@ramzimallatstudio) reflects the dichotomy of perspectives in which the Middle East is portrayed.
The neon sign and accompanying prints are on display as part of 'Fault Lines', a solo exhibition by Ramzi Mallat at P21 Gallery which has been extended until 2 December.

Intimacy in Anonymity
Ramzi Mallat (@ramzimallatstudio) produces socially engaged work that was created by people's consumption, offering coffee to pedestrians in Lebanon, reading their fortune in the coffee grounds and then preserving the remnants.
The resulting artwork is a commentary on the uncertainty of the future of these communities as well as the effects of globalisation on the region's heritage.
The work will be on display as part of 'Fault Lines', a solo exhibition by Ramzi Mallat at P21 Gallery from 9 to 25 November 2023.

Ramzi Mallat - Fault Lines Solo Exhibition at P21 Gallery
P21 are pleased to announce exhibition by Lebanese artist Ramzi Mallat.
Fault Lines is a solo presentation of recent works by Lebanese artist Ramzi Mallat, curated by Kirsty Flockhart.
The exhibition title makes reference to the geological and cultural divisions that inform the artist's practice.
Living and working between London and Beirut, Mallat explores the socio-political impact of globalisation on notions of identity and self.
He hopes to broaden cross-cultural awareness with works that blend familiar and unfamiliar aspects of culture and question the idea of the respective Other.

Changing Track | PRIVATE VIEW
Friday 24th February 2023, 18:00 - 21:00
P21 Gallery is proud to present Changing Track, a group exhibition presenting works by Samir Laghouati-Rashwan, Randa Maroufi, Rayane Mcirdi, Valentin Noujaïm and Sara Ouhaddou. Exploring the notions of daydream, change and im/mobility, the show features video and stained glass works, two mediums that function through an interplay between light and surface; traversing, transformed, absorbed or bouncing back, the rays draw straight or deviated trajectories. Dealing with the construction of self, contemporary social realities, and the intertwining of history, the works on display offer singular perspectives on the unexpected connections between hindrance and movement, constraint and transformation, preservation and vanishing lines – connections that elaborate the layering of spaces in time, and of time in space.
Curated by: Estelle Marois
Graphic design: Walid Bouchouchi / Studio Akakir
Set design: Leïla Arenou
Generously supported : Arts Council England and Fluxus Art Projects
