Right now the US is experiencing the second worst spike in COVID since the beginning of the pandemic. Right now, about 1 in 20 people have the virus, it is estimated that when this wave is over, 1 in 3 people will experience an infection.
It doesn’t have to be that way. COVID is not an inevitability to just passively accept, it is a life changing disease (every time) that you should use every tool and tactic at your disposal to avoid.
You already know what to do. If you haven’t received the updated vaccine, do that. (It’s not a booster, it’s an update, in the same way the annual flu shot is updated.) Mask, any time you’re near people you don’t live with or where anyone else has been in the last 30 minutes. (This includes outdoor spaces, like picking up a no contact delivery or pumping gasoline.) Avoid crowds. Now is not the time for concerts and hockey games or even a leisurely stroll around Target to browse. Clean your air and demand clean air in your workplace and your kids’ schools and anywhere anyone in your family has to spend time.
If 1 in 3 Americans contract the virus on this wave, that means that another half million people are likely going to die, mostly elderly and high risk. (Like me.)
It also means that 11 million people — or more — are going to be disabled, at least short term, when this is done, and there are no reliable predictors for who does and does not develop post-COVID disability.
Those numbers are horrible. But don’t let them terrify you into paralysis, let them galvanize you into action to protect yourself and your family and community.

I don't know what to do in the longer term month-to-month it's been day-to-day
and systemic changes; these need to happen, but, what are feasible, what can be brought about?
it can seem so insurmountable
regardless
I endeavor to hold on, here, metaphorical waters rising as the plague is spreading
and hope you are hanging on as well
a person I may never meet is still someone I can care about
all the best, lots of love, and wishing you strength and wellness
may we remember the reality of the pandemic now and in the future
<3
COVID floats like smoke
COVID is airborne
COVID is ongoing
COVID is NOT "mild"
COVID is NOT over
COVID impairs immunity

Nagging cough, nagging cough It's been nagging on and off Now it's naggin' all the livelong day That nagging cough That won't go away
That nagging cough It's in the schools That nagging cough And the hospitals too In fact, it's hard to think of Anywhere without a nagging cough
Nagging cough, nagging cough It's been nagging on and off Now it's naggin' all the livelong day That nagging cough That won't go away
That nagging cough Is running wild That nagging cough Oh, but they tell you it's "mild" It's almost like they're in love, In love with the nagging cough
Nagging cough, nagging cough It's been nagging on and off Now it's naggin' all the livelong day That nagging cough That won't go away
That nagging cough It just nags and nags That nagging cough You better pack your bags Because it's hard to get off When you're riding with the nagging cough
Nagging cough, nagging cough It's been nagging on and off Now it's naggin' all the livelong day That nagging cough That won't go away Now it's naggin' all the livelong day Why won't that cough Just go away?

COVID IS NOT JUST A FUCKING COLD. IT'S NOT A COLD.
getting COVID multiple times does NOT decrease your risk of serious complications.
COVID is SERIOUS ILLNESS that can KILL you, even IF you're perfectly healthy beforehand.
you CANNOT rule out whether serious complications will happen to your our others.
if you're sick MASK UP, and STAY HOME whenever possible.

we are on like covid variant #100037 and rsv/flu/pneumonia cases are rising and people will show up unmasked and be like “yeah i’ve been sick for days :/” like. ok. Get the fuck away from me then? why are you out here breathing on everything. the very least you could be doing is masking. NOT hacking into open air every two seconds.

You don't even have to pirate anything if the software's free anyway:
(See also.)
idk. it's never too late to start drawing. get a wacom intuos for 44 bucks and pirate an art program. use the billions of tools available to make it easier. trace 3d models. redraw existing drawings. make an elf and draw her 3000 times. you can do it. and if you are actually unable to hold a pen, dont go typing in prompts for some ai art, write fanfiction or original stuff. writing is art. it has just as much value it just takes longer than 1 second to appreciate

I mean masking for pathogen reasons, not costume etc. reasons (and ideally with a well-fitting, effective mask preventing air from leaking in from gaps between face and mask; surgical masks stop spittle but not airborne transmission).
Also maybe check out this video if you like gabber and/or memes

Me watching everyone we were supposed to spend indoor Christmas with test positive for covid one by one. I’m feeling much better about my insistence that we only see people outside who have no symptoms until this surge has calmed down.

COVID is Airborne!
#COVIDisAirborne because aerosols/breath (tiny bits of moisture) can remain suspended in the air and are able to float distances greater than a metre (kind of like Koffing).
If someone has COVID, SARS-CoV-2 can spread with their breath. That means you can get sick even if you are several metres away from someone, especially if neither of you are masked (or aren't wearing a mask well- like below your nose!)
In fact, if COVID aerosols/breath builds up somewhere indoors that isn't well ventilated, and the air is not filtered well enough, you may get sick even after an infected person has left the room.
