"I only ever liked one girl, after what they did, I never admitted it again." "She looks away from her current lover, eyes turning glassy with tears, "I felt nothing but guilt for what happened, and all I did was like her, more than a friend... okay, I didn't just like her, I loved her." He waits patiently for her to continue, "I stood up for her when she wasn't around and my so-called friend, told the person who hated me. Well, word travels fast, and she got bullied even worse for it, she ended up moving away, and I have felt nothing but guilt, especially when she didn't tell me." She smiles as if the memory in her head was happy, "She was my best friend... my only friend, really..." That bright smile he loved her for fades into a frown, "So, after that day, I stopped wanting human connection, first it was a boy then it was her, and that was the last straw, that's what caused me to snap."

"My mother had to deal with a lot while I was growing up. From my sister who treated her like shit to my fucked up brother who constantly hurt her." she pauses, taking a breath before continuing, "When I was young, I learned early on that the system does nothing to help. They would just look the other way. It got to a point where she didn't want them anymore... I mean, would you blame her? My brother would get mad and his favorite thing to do, was hurt her." She looks down, her eyes going distant, "Whether that was with words or fists, it didn't matter. She tried her best. She's a great parent, but what would you do if you were in her shoes?" She shakes her head, "My sister wasn't any better, she got upset for stupid reasons, would hit my siblings and I got to the point where I wanted them dead." Tears fell down her face as she spoke, voice pained, "I always wished they would just drop dead. Wrong, right? But I stopped having faith in the system that was supposed to help." She screams, "They never did, they always told her there was nothing they could do! Can you believe that?! And she tried!"

"You can't promise me anything," he murmurs. She looks away, "You're right. I can't promise you anything." As she says this, she realizes she can't. She can't promise him a better life. She can't promise him she wouldn't lose what's left of her sanity trying to fight those thoughts that wanted to pull her under and drown her. She couldn't promise him anything. Realizing this, she repeats it again. Unable to stop the thoughts that clawed at her, she repeats it again. And again. And again. Until she feels his upset when he explains, "I was kidding, you said 'it will be alright, I promise.' so I jokingly said 'you can't promise me anything'. But clearly, you're upset by what I said." At that, she snaps out of it, "What? I'm not upset, I was just saying, 'You're right, I can't promise you anything.' Because you are right."

"I- I can't stand you! I hate your guts so much! You're everything I despise! You think you know the real me, you don't. You only know the parts of me I know you like, that's it!" She screams, in his face, unable to deal with the true emotion buried deep beneath the hate and anger. He just looks at her, as if he could peer past her temper, her annoyances, and her many walls she kept up to protect her wounded spirit. He saw her for who she really was, so, he embraces her, feels her flinch at his touch but holds on. She yells at him about how much she hates him and wishes she never met him. The barbs she throws at him should hurt, but they don't because he knows none of what she says is real, he knows she loves him. She's just afraid of it again. She got like this sometimes, the fear getting the better of her, and all he can do is hold on to her to try and bring her back. Attempting to soothe her, he places his hand on her back, she cowers at his hand but stops talking, her russet eyes looking at him, filling with tears, she breaks like glass from a broken mirror. There's nothing he can do but comfort her. - Broken Spirit.

"Please," she wails, rousing him from sleep. She clings to him, her grasp strong, "Don't leave me alone. Not today, you weren't suppose to disappear like the others. You were suppose to be different. You promised you were different." He shifts around until he's face to face with his love, noting that whoever she's speaking to must mean a lot if she's crying. He gently wraps his arms around her sleeping form and brings her close, murmuring, "I'm not going anywhere, Silly." Her cheeks wet with tears, she cries, "Don't go! Please!" Seeing his love like this, was new to him. It worried him a little, he thought about waking her but what if she didn't want to go back to sleep? Wherever her dream took place, he knew she wouldn't want to go back to it. He licks her tears away, lovingly, not wanting to see her like this. Her eyes flutter open, a sleepy daze to them, as if she's not fully aware of her surroundings.

“I’m addicted to spending time with you,” she cries, falling to her knees in desperation. He looks at her funny, “What?” She continues, as if she didn’t hear him, “But I also love killing people and part of me wants to murder you.” She confesses, glancing up at him, predatory eyes shining with amusement.

“What are you doing here?” She asks the male she used to be good friends with. He smiles at her, “It’s been a while, hasn’t it, Mulkvisti?” She glares at him, “You don’t get to call me that. You’re the one that left me! You’re the one that said I needed to change myself to make you happy! When you wouldn’t even quit drinking! Let alone quit smoking weed. I mean, you moved to an entirely different state and didn’t even tell me. Yet you claim we’re friends. You’re a liar. You’ve lied to me so many times that I won’t fall for it this time. Never again. You don’t get to come back and think everything’s okay. Not after what you did. You started a fight between my mother and brother. And then you left me. You have no idea what that did to me. After claiming we wanted different things. That our lives were splitting at that moment. You were seeing someone else while you were with me and it was probably the same whore you claimed to hate!” He stares at her, grin falling, “How could you say that?! I loved you with everything! You think anyone is going to love you! What a joke! No one is going to love you because of the type of female you are. I loved you. I did. You were just to much to handle. You wouldn’t obey a singe word I asked. You’d fight me on everything. And you wonder why you’re alone!” She yells, “No, you didn’t. You never loved me. You said you did but I don’t think you actually loved me. You loved the idea of conquering me like you did everyone else!” He snarls, “I shouldn’t have left you. I should have broken you before I left you.” She laughs, the sound of ice cracking, “You did! Don’t you get that? You destroyed me. If it weren’t for my mother throwing me back in, I wouldn’t be here, I would be emotionally dead. Why? Because of you. All of those cruel things you said to me that day.”

“Deciding not to wait for him was the best choice I ever made,” she murmurs quietly. “What do you mean?” The question was curious not condescending like she was so use to, so the answer comes out easily as if it were ink spilling over a sheet of paper, “Because if I had waited for him, I would have never met you. He’s the reason I’m so scared of asking you things. He’s a traitorous snake and he lies with every breath he takes. But he made so many promises to me that now I’m afraid to ask for things or even show the slightest need for help. He always saw that as a weakness and would exploit it every time. Making me feel like I was nothing when I made him a gift. He threw every gift I ever made for him away. it’s why I was so surprised you still had them. Even the one that was me professing my love to you. You still have it,” she pauses tears slipping down her face. She goes to wipe them, chiding herself, “Look at me, crying because I realized you still have those gifts. It shocked me a little to find that out. No one has ever kept my gifts. But you have. And you actually like them. No, not like, you love them. Even when I thought you’d call it childish. You didn’t. You smiled and accepted them, you have no idea how much that made me smile.” She cries, her voice cracking a little.

“I bet you want to know why when I’m angry I cry, instead of showing just how bad my rage can get, am I right?” She looks up into his steel-blue eyes. “It’s easy. The reason is because if I were to do that, you’d break. Everyone breaks from it. I get that now, no one can handle it. Their minds just can’t deal with it, No matter how often they say they can, the simple thing is they can’t. I know I told you I’d show you what it’s like but I don’t want to lose you. I don’t want to burn you. You turned out to mean so much to me that if I were to lose you because of my rage I wouldn’t have anyone to blame but myself and I don’t think my mind would be able to deal with that.” He places his hand on her shoulder, eyes full of concern, “I can handle it, I’ve told you this. Are you that scared of me leaving? How many people have abandoned you?” She nods silently.

“Ah, there you are,” says the voice, staring at him. “What do you want?” He steps back in alarm. “The usual, your demise and all that,” grins the shadow. “B- but why? What did I do?” The shadow shrugs, a strange glint in it’s eye, “You don’t get to beg. Not after what you did. You took something important from me and for that YOU’LL PAY!” He closes his eyes, waiting for the shadow to take it’s revenge.

“Have you ever been abandoned for being yourself? What about because you said something they didn’t like?” She asks with her head down. “No, I can’t say I have, but I’ve been lied to,” he offers. She shakes her head, “Who hasn’t? Did you know I’ve been stabbed in the back so often that I’m surprised I’m still breathing? Do you know how that feel? It stings! A lot and when you go dark and jaded suddenly you’re the villain of the story, not the people who pushed you into that role. Don’t you think that’s a little backwards? People shun those they can’t understand and then wonder why they do bad things. Their point of view is misguided by judgement and vanity. What makes you think they can be redeemed?” He gazes at her, eyes full of concern, “They can change. That’s the beauty of Humanity, they have the ability to grow and change.” She looks up, “That’s just it, they haven’t changed. Nothing about them is different from when I was young,” she laughs then, a cold hollow sound, “if anything they’re far worse than they were before.” He holds his hands out, “You don’t have to do this.” She gets up then, “And that’s where you’re wrong!”

“I don’t understand what’s wrong with you,” she murmurs, glancing at the ink stain of a cat in front of her. It just stares at her with big, round eyes then sneezes and wanders off. “Wait!” She calls, following the feline as it leaves. “Where are you going?” The cat turns around once, it’s brilliant blue eyes glaring at her before it meows and continues walking. She tilts her head to the side, curiously, “What are you up to?” But continues to follow the mysterious black cat.

Knocked Out
Honestly, I have no idea where to even begin. So, I suppose I'll start with how tedious the day started.
It was a typical, dreary Monday. Summer and I were talking about what, I don't remember. When she goes, "Misery, have you heard the saying, 'I'll knock you into next week'?" I reply, "Yes, I have. Why do you ask?" I'll confess, I was a little curious as to why she'd bring it up. "Great, because if you're not quiet. That's what I'm going to do." But then, Summer wasn't a great person or friend. She's like one of those people you meet and then can't get rid of for some reason. I assumed she was teasing. So, I jokingly clarify with a slight tilt of my head, "What are you talking about?" She whirls around with such anger it stops me in tracks, "What I mean to say is if you don't stay quiet, I'll knock you into next week." I take a faltering step back, mumbling, "Okay."
A few hours later and I meet up with her again. "So, how are you now?" I ask. "I wasn't kidding, Misery, I hope you know that," she seethes. Caught off guard by her words, I inquire, "Is there something wrong?" She groans, annoyed, "Yes, you're what's wrong. You won't leave me alone." She stalks off with me on her heels, "I don't understand. Why don't you want to talk to me?" "I have no desire to chat with you," she glowers.
That, right here, is a dilemma I've had many times with her. She was allowed to grow tired with me. But I'm not permitted to ignore her at all. It's something about our "friendship" I despise. I mean, can you even really call it that?
"Misery? Misery?!" She calls to me, attempting to get my attention a little while later, while I try my best to overlook her, which never goes well, but I supposed it was worth a shot.
She doesn't take my silence as an answer. She rarely ever did, and this one of those days where me staying quiet didn't matter. When I do answer her and acknowledge her existence, she would just as quickly get irritated with me.
"What is it, Summer?" I ask, concern for her disregarding my annoyance. She looks at me, "Why are you ignoring me? Did I do something wrong? Am I embarrassing you?"
My reply is immediate and routine as if my voice belonged to that of an automaton, "I didn't hear you. No, and no." She waves her hand at me, "Eh, I don't care all that much, as long as you're not upset with me." "Well, what would happen if I didn't pay attention to you?" She whips around as fast as lightning, rage burning behind her eyes. "Kidding, Summer. I was joking," I murmur, and the anger dies down, not before I feel her open palm strike my cheek. Which knocks me back, and I stagger away, clutching my face.
"What was that for?" I ask, annoyance giving way to fury. She looks at me, confused. "You slapped me," I gawk at her, bewildered. "What? I could have sworn I did that last Monday." I stare at her, perplexed. "You're acting odd, Misery, stranger than usual, which is saying something because you're weird," she mentions with a fake chill. "Wait, last Monday?" I grab her by the shoulders. "Yes, that's what I said. Now, please let go of me." "But you don't understand, Summer, that was a second ago." She narrows her eyes, concerned, "What was?" I release her and point to my stinging cheek, "This." She leans in to examine my face, "Misery, there isn't a red mark or even any evidence that I hit you." "Okay, but hear me out, for me, that was a second ago, while it was an entire week, for you." She grips my hands, "So, you're saying I knocked you into next week? Real funny prank, Misery, even for you." I glance down, "I'm not joking, Summer, you did." "You know what, Misery, I'm done talking to you about this. If all you're going to do is be cruel, then don't speak to me," she stalks off as I round on her, "I'm mean? Have you ever looked in the mirror, Summer? Oh, wait, my bad, I forgot if you gaze into a mirror or any reflective surface and see how much of a monster you are, you'd break it." She gawks at me, aghast, "You did not just call me a freak." "You're right. I didn't!" I yell, stomping my foot and leaving her.

Agony's Garden
Her name was Agony. She had one friend: me. She knows what torment is, she learned it at a young age. When I met her, she didn't have many friends aside from the plants she'd introduce me to. She regularly carried one of her bulbs with her wherever she went. The extraordinary thing was that it was never the same flower. She used to be so bubbly and happy, never allowing anything to get to her. Until something in her just changed, she became clouded somehow. Her distinguished grin that I cherish so much has grown into this twisted, sadistic smirk.
"Hi, Agony. How are you doing today?" I ask as I approach her. "I'm fine. Why do you ask?" Before I can respond, I hear snicker, "Agony, have you met anguish yet?" I jump in before Agony can say anything, "Leave her alone, Jason." Agony blocks my path, scowling, "Stop, Jeremy, I don't need you protecting me." I stand there, momentarily caught off guard, "But, I'm your best friend. It's my responsibility to defend you." She whirls around and glowers at me, "I guess it's a good point then that you're not my friend, now isn't it?" That hurt, it stung so bad, it felt like my own heart fragmented like glass. "But, Agony, I've stood by your side since Kindergarten, why forsake me now?" "You only get threatened because you're companions with me," She glances away, her violet-blue eyes blazing with fury. I clasp her hand, and she gazes back at me, "You assume I suffer if I get bullied. I don't care. You're my friend so, I'll stick by you no matter what, even if you don't want me to."
We gaze up to see James walking, practically scrambling to his bike when suddenly a tree branch bends down and grabs him, hoisting him higher and higher into the air.  She leaves my side, forcing me to let go of her hand. I trail after her as she approaches the tree, "Who said you could leave?" Jason begins panicking as he comprehends how high up he is. When I reach her side, I gape up, starstruck, and for a minute, I forget what Agony's arranging.
But Jason's shrieks swiftly snap me out of it. "Agony! What are you doing?" I move to seize her sleeve but, she shrugs me off and, I topple forward. "Stay out of this, Jeremy," she snarls. "Agony, this isn't like you," I shout. "And how do you know that? For all you know, I've lied to you about everything," she twists around on me, bristling with fury. "I don't believe you. I refuse to believe that. I know you wouldn't lie to me." She shakes her head wistfully but sets Jason down.
"I'm home," Agony announces as she enters her house. Her mother rounds the corner and hugs Agony, "Oh, how was your day at school." "Mom, you're embarrassing me," her blue-purple eyes shift towards me, and she mouths, Sorry. I wave her off when her mother glances up and notices me standing behind Agony. "Oh," she stares at Agony then back at me before continuing, "Hi, Jeremy, Agony didn't inform me you would be coming over today. How are you doing? Excelling in school, I hope." My response is swift, "Yes, I'm doing good in school. I'm fine." Her mother returns to Agony, waiting for an answer. She rolls her eyes and retorts, "Same as usual." Her mother's eyes narrow, "They're still harassing you?" "Yes, but it's nothing I can't manage. Now, I have to study for a test. That's why I brought Jeremy." "I'll leave you two alone. I will be in the kitchen if you need anything." She notifies us as she takes a step away from Agony and begins heading for the kitchen. She lingers for a moment, twists around and, peers at Agony, "You need to get a hold on your emotions, young lady."
Agony turns on her heels and begins marching up the stairs, shouting as she goes. "Yeah, I remember. Come on, Jeremy." I shrug my shoulders at her mother before following Agony up the stairs.
"Why did your mom advise you to handle your emotions?" I ask as we make our way to her bedroom. "Be wary. Alright. Watch where you tread. My room isn't exactly like it was the last time you visited." "Yeah, like there's an entire forest just growing in through the floor and walls," I joke as I start chuckling. She watches me for a moment before opening the door.
She crosses through the open doorway, swiftly vanishing amidst the various plants that make up her room. I follow her into her bedroom, only to lose her, not even a moment later. "Agony," I call out as I wander the "forest" of sorts.
I roam about the room, faintly listening to the chirping of birds and humming of insects. I hear a rustling come from a nearby shrub, "Agony?" But a little hare comes out instead. "There you are, Jeremy," Agony remarks as she appears behind me, startling me. I twist around and put my palm on my chest, "Agony! You scared me!" She cocks her head to the side, "Sorry? You shouldn't go off like that." "I shouldn't run off like that! You're the one who disappeared!" She gawks at me for several minutes before scolding, "You need to be extra cautious. Besides, I found a small clearing to do our studying."
"So, how did you do all this?" I ask in an endeavor to begin a conversation. She doesn't respond. Instead, something grips me from behind, I yelp, as it takes me up into the air, surprising Agony out of her silence. "What the heck?!" "Hey! Put him down!" Agony screeches at whatever's holding me in the air.
After a little while, the thing dumps me in the dirt. Agony is waiting on the ground in front of me. "Are you alright? Are you hurt? Please tell me you're okay," she has an uncertain expression on her face. I get up and approach her, gripping one of her hands with my own, "I'm fine." "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I didn't intend to lose control. I swear it won't happen again," she proceeds to apologize profusely. "I- it's alright, Agony. I'm not in any pain. I don't feel any discomfort. So, you don't have to continue scrutinizing me like that," I breathe in an attempt to console her. She gazes at me with teary eyes, "But....but you could have gotten injured. It's all my fault. I was stupid to bring you here and not anticipate something like this would happen." I squeeze her as she's sobbing, "I said I'm fine. You don't need to fret about me." She continues wailing into my shoulder, "But..." I shush her, "None of that." She falls quiet. I chance a glimpse at her and notice she has her eyes shut, her tears already drying. "Agony?" She doesn't glance at me but replies, "Hmm?" "Are you okay?" She doesn't answer me, opting to stay nestled with me. I look up and observe the flowers around us and come to one conclusion: her garden is more lethal than pretty.
"Agony, wait up," I call as I catch up with her on her way to Science class.
A couple of seconds later, we start our labs, but Jason interrupts us from where he's sitting down, "Hey, Agony, what does that flower say? Oh, wait, it can't speak because it's dead." "Leave me alone, Jason," she hisses as she goes back to the lab. Jason, of course, doesn't listen and resumes bothering her.  "Let her be, Jason. I'm not afraid to tell the teacher," I warn. He turns to frown at me, jeering, "Nobody asked you, Jeremy. I know you won't tattle on me."
Out of the corner of my eye, I observe a twig twinge against the glass. I glimpse at Agony and notice her eyes darken. I instinctively take her hand, "You need to calm down. You can't tolerate getting in trouble over someone like him." She didn't acknowledge me, which I perceived as a disastrous sign. So, I raised my hand, catching the attention of Mr. Laufey. "What is it, Jeremy?" So, I notify him exactly what Jason has been doing this entire period. He turns to Jason, "Is this true?" Jason shakes his head. Mr. Laufey stares at me then back to Jason, then addresses Agony. She peers at me with a jumble of rage and anxiety in her eyes before barely nodding. "Alright, Jeremy, Agony, and Jason. I would like to see all three of you after class." "Oh, you're so dead," whispers Jason as soon as Mr. Laufey turns his back.
"Jason, I would like you to apologize to Agony," Mr. Laufey instructs as soon as class ends. Jason doesn't say anything. "Jason, we do not authorize bullying here. So, I will request again, apologize to Agony." He whispers, "Sorry." "What was that?" He cups his fingers to his ear. "I apologize," Jason seethes. "Good, now, you can leave Jason." He sticks his tongue out as he disappears.
"Now, Agony, can you describe what happened?" She stays mute, her eyes downcast. I take a step forward and speak up, "He's been messing with Agony for a  while." His eyes shift to her, "Is this true?" She nods slowly. "Then I'll keep an eye on him for the rest of the semester. If something like this occurs again, don't be hesitant to come and tell me."
"Are you annoyed with me or something?" I ask a little while after we left school. She gazes forward before retorting, "No, should I be?" I step in her way, forcing her to face me, "It seems like you are." She brushes me off, opting to walk down the well-known path. I stand there for a moment, astonished at her attitude when I catch sight of a branch flicking in the breeze like a whip. I sprint to Agony, who resumes walking like nothing's happening.
As we neared the end of the trail, we heard someone jeer, "Well, look who the cat hauled in." Agony freezes in her tracks at the sound. I stop once I reach her, "Agony, ignore him." I turn in Jason's area, "Let her be." He advances on us with a leer plastered on his face, "I don't think I will. Besides, I'm going to make you pay for what you said in Science class." I take a hesitant step back just as he lunges out and grips my shirt. "Where do you think you're going?" Jason taunts as he hauls me away from Agony, "I told you, you'd pay for what you said." "B-but it was the truth," I protest as he shoves me to the ground. "Hey!" Agony screams, "Leave him alone!" Jason spits in her direction, "Wait your turn, plant witch." She takes a step backward, then her eyes darken, and she snickers, "What did you just say?" Jason continues deriding, "Let's face facts, you can't stop me, and you want to know why?" When Agony doesn't react, he scoffs at her, "Wait, you don't understand? I assumed it would have been obvious, but it appears you're as oblivious as a lamb shipped to slaughter." He points to me, "He's going to stop you because he likes you."
Her expression was that of unadulterated wrath as she waves her fingers through the air, and a tree branch was at her side like a devoted hound. She strokes the bough as if it's her pet then points to Jason. As if it understood what to do, the plant's limb parts from Agony, striking at Jason like a vindictive serpent. It climbs up his ankle and tightens its hold on him. She beams as it carries him up into the air. Jason peers at me with shocked eyes as he yelps, "Let go of me!" She scrutinizes him, eyes as sharp as ice, "Are you positive you want me to let you go? You'll land on your head from high up you are." "Agony!" I call, attempting to take her attention away from Jason. "You should set him down. I imagine he learned his lesson." She whirls around, her freezing glower trained on me, "Scum like him never learn from their mistakes." "Agony, you have to quit this." "Why? So, he can proceed to mistreat other people?! I thought you cared," she shakes her head in disgust, "But you're exactly like them!" I timidly approach her, consciously extending out my palm, "You know that's not true. I would never turn on you like that."
She yells, "You still don't realize it, do you?! I have no intention of letting this pathetic excuse of a boy go!" I try again, "Agony, this is your ire speaking, not you. Please, I beseech you, stop this." She hesitates for a moment then snarls, "Silly Jeremy, I'm more lucid than I've ever been." "You don't have to do this, Agony," I implore, trying to get through to her, "You're going to do something you'll regret." She brushes off my words with a flick of her wrist.
This time I touch her shoulder, in an effort, to get her to stop. She flinches under my touch, surprising me, but I refuse to allow it to show. "Agony? It's okay. You can let him go. I'm pretty sure he knows not to mess with you anymore," I keep my hand still, on her shoulder. She gradually spins around, facing me. "Agony?" She smiles at me, her eyes clear of that Madness.
"Agony, if you can hear me, I need you to come out of that," Mr. Laufey orders as he places a hand on the bark. My head nods of its own accord. "Alright, if you're that sure. Jason," he glances back as he continues ordering, "I want you to take Jeremy a couple of steps back." Jason does as Mr. Laufey commands and drags me a couple of steps away. He lays his hands on the tree bark, and there's a faint light emanating from them. It gradually gets brighter, forcing me to shield my eyes from it.
One moment she was the same Agony, the next, she snaps her fingers, and two branches appear by her side like obedient dogs. "Agony?!" I squawk as the boughs hoist me up into the air adjacent to Jason. She gazes at me, eyes piercing, "Really, Jeremy, you think you'd learn something about my wrath." I glance at her, petrified. "Nice work, genius. Now, what's your next idea?" Jason shouts over to me. "Shut up, Jason. If you hadn't disturbed us, she wouldn't have gotten angry. But you did, so, technically, this is all your fault," I spit at him.
I ponder for a moment, eyeing my surroundings, and ultimately look at Agony as Jason demands, "Why are you doing this? You know this isn't going to fix you." I take her attention off of Jason, "He didn't mean it like that, Agony." She tips her head up, scrutinizing me, "Then what is he implying? Because to me, it sounds like he doesn't comprehend the position he finds himself in." I gawk at her, eyes pleading, "Agony, don't do this. Let him go, I promise you, this isn't going to resolve anything!"
Her eyes suddenly clear and meet mine. "Jeremy?" Those blue-purple eyes cloud over with dread, "What are you doing up there? Did I do this?" She motions to the boughs, gripping me up in the air, and they gradually return me down to the ground.
Once my feet touch the path, I rush over to her and embrace her, "It's alright. You're okay." She doesn't react at first and stands there frozen. "Agony?" I urge, but she doesn't acknowledge me. Only then do I realize she's gazing up at Jason still in the air by his ankle. I loosen my hold on her and grasp her by her shoulders, "You can put him down now, Agony." She cocks her head to the side in confusion, "Why would I do that? Don't you understand, if I put him down, he'll die?" "Then, you can set him down gently," I reason as I hug her tight, refusing to let go. She slumps into my arms and releases a sigh. The branch holding Jason lowers him down a couple of inches. "I'm sorry," she whimpers as her lovely blue-violet eyes swell with tears. "There's no reason for these tears," I hush her as I wipe her tear-stained cheeks.
There's a thud behind us, causing me to twist around with Agony nestled in my arms. I notice Jason on the ground. The tree limb over him returns to its original position.
I frown at him as he shakes the dust off of himself, mouthing, "Don't say anything. Walk away." He, instead, shouts, "You tried to murder me, you freak!" I feel Agony tense in my arms, and I instinctively go to talk her down, "It's okay. You didn't mean it." But she shoves me aside as tears course down her face once more. "Agony?" Her name barely out of my lips before she turns and bolts.
"Agony! Agony, wait!" I call after her as she flees. I turn and glare at Jason, "Excellent work, idiot." Before spinning on my heel as I take off, pursuing her. I hear Jason screaming after me, "You're not going to follow that thing, are you?" But I ignore him as I head in the direction Agony fled.
"Agony?!" I yell, searching for her. There's no answer except the howling of the wind. "When did the breeze pick up?" I wonder aloud as I continue looking for Agony.
I stumble over a tree root, and I start to curse Jason, "He just had to keep pushing her. What did he expect would happen? Everything would be fine, and she'd yield to him!" But, the longer I thought about it, the more I realized that if I had kept my mouth shut. None of this would have happened. Agony wouldn't have bolted. She would still be here with me. I wail at that last observation, "Agony!!"
I overhear her giggling ring around me, sending me sprinting again in the direction of that pleasant laugh. "Agony!" I holler out.
I hear her cackling this time, "Agony, where are you?! I can't see you!" I glance up at the trees, believing she might have climbed one, but I can't spot her among the foliage.
"This isn't funny anymore! Show yourself! Please!" I scream, running frantically. "Agony! Please! I'm begging you!" I tumble over another root and plunge face-first into the dirt. "Agony," I moan, still on the ground. "Jeremy," her voice singsongs on the wind. I look up and see no one. "Agony?" I whisper as I get up and stand, not wanting to frighten her away. I turn, slowly, in a full circle, hoping to catch her within my line of vision. Disappointment fills my chest when I don't see her. "Agony, why?" There's no answer but the howling of the gust. I take one step forward then another when my foot catches on something. I glance down and notice thick vines coiling around my ankle.
Agony," I whimper as I pluck up a vine and tug at it. It behaves like a serpent, twining itself over my wrist and starts slithering up my arm. I follow it.
I pause in front of a green covered tree and yank it. The plant snaps, falling to the ground. I cuss loudly as the vine around my arm gradually withers to brown and drops. "Damn it!" I roar, kicking the tree in anger. "Agony! I know you're under all of these vines! You can show yourself now! It's just you and me," I whisper, gazing down in frustration.
Sometime later, Jason finds me against the tree staring at nothing. Mr. Laufey is not far behind him. I vaguely hear Jason, "See, I told you he went after her." Mr. Laufey stoops down in front of me, concern reflecting in his eyes, "Jeremy? Are you alright? Do you know where Agony is?" I aim my finger up toward the plant in defeat. He stares at me in bewilderment then gazes at Jason, who shrugs his shoulders. "Is she in the tree?" He asks with a tilt of his head. I nod once in acknowledgment. He extends his hand, and I gingerly take it.
When I remove my arm, I see bark and lichen littered around the clearing. The tree has a gaping hole in the front of it. "Agony!" I shriek, rushing forward. I fall to my knees when I see that the tree is empty of anything. "Agony?" I whimper. I feel a hand on my shoulder, "I'm sorry." I hang my head in silence.
When the authorities arrive, I tell them what happened, and they turn to Mr. Laufey for confirmation.  He shakes his head at them and points to a chainsaw by the tree. I gawk at him then turn to Jason, eyes pleading, "Tell them about the light that came from Mr. Laufey's hand." He tilts his head in confusion, "Jeremy, you don't remember, the teacher cut the tree apart to show you that Agony wasn't there," he turns to gaze at the police. "I admit that it's my fault she ran off, but in my defense, she tried to murder me." I glare at him, "That's a load of horse shit, Jason. You harassed Agony to the point where she couldn't take it anymore." He holds his hands up in surrender, "Fine, you're right, Jeremy. That's what I did. I confess I bullied her, alright. But there wasn't any light coming from Mr. Laufey. You're delusional right now, but they will find Agony, alright." I notice Mr. Laufey conversing with the officers, "What are you telling them? I'm not crazy! I swear he destroyed the tree with his hand!" Mr. Laufey approaches me and places a hand on my shoulder, "It's going to be okay, Jeremy. They'll take care of you." I look into his eyes and notice they are a lighter variant of Agony's eyes. "Wait! I recognize those eyes!" I shout as the officers take me by the shoulders and start to lead me to their car. "Wait!!" I shriek as they set me in the back of the cop car. "I'm not insane! Mr. Laufey tell them, please! Please!!" He makes no move to tell the cops what happened. He watches me as the car drives away from the scene.
                                          Two Months Later
"Jeremy?" Someone asks- no, not someone, but who is this again. I can't seem to remember. They approach me with caution.
"Jeremy? Do you remember me?" I stare blankly at this person who it seems I've forgotten. When an orderly comes over and talks to the stranger, "He's heavily medicated due to his outbursts." "Outbursts?" The visitor questions out of concern. The nurse shrugs her shoulders at them, "He sometimes has episodes, always shrieking and screaming about how his teacher destroyed a tree with light that came from his hand and that girl. You know, the one who's missing." That girl. What girl? I don't remember any girl. My mind in a daze, I think, as the mysterious person sits in front of me and murmurs softly, "Agony." Then turns away, apologizing to the nurse. "Agony?" I mumble the name is foreign, yet familiar in my mouth. Through the haze, I see a figure with honey blonde hair. They turn around, smiling, their blue-violet eyes bright as they kiss my forehead.
The fog suddenly clears from my head. "Agony!" I holler as I turn to the nearest orderly. "Has Agony been found yet?" The nurse glances at me for a moment, confused, "Agony? Jeremy, we've been over this. The authorities have declared her dead, and her case closed." I glare but concede, "Fine. I understand."
                                     Three years later
"Three years of treatment, and you have officially been declared balanced enough to leave this facility. Congratulations, Jeremy, you've soared beyond our expectations since you came here," the doctor praises. "So, does this mean I can leave?" I ask as I take a seat. "Yes, you are scheduled to be discharged later today. But I must warn you, any slip-ups, and you might end up back here. Which would be such a shame, don't you agree?" The therapist looks up from whatever he was scribbling on his clipboard. "Is that a threat?" I tense, waiting. "Oh, heavens no, you're scheduled to be released this afternoon," he waves his hand, "The session is over for today. I think we've made progress." I glare at him as I get up and move to the door. "Oh, and Jeremy," he calls just as I'm practically out the door, "Try not to screw this up." I ignore his snide remark and continue walking.
I breathe in the fresh air as I saunter down the stone steps to the side-walk. I bump into someone on their way up, causing them to stumble but, they catch the railing and steady themselves. It takes me a moment to register who's in front of me as they exclaim, "Jeremy, I was going to see you. I didn't know you got out today." I contemplate who this is and come up with nothing. "Um, not to be rude or anything, but who exactly are you?" The stranger looks at me faintly hurt, "You don't remember me? You must at least remember Mr. Laufey." At the mention of his name, I snarl, "You mean the bastard that had me committed here?" They take a step back, slightly surprised by my reaction, "Of course, I should have figured you'd remember him." They extend a hand, "I'm Jason. Remember me now?"
My hands move of their own accord and shove him into the railing. "Long time no see, Jeremy," he grins warily. "What do you want?" I snarl. "For starters, I'd like to apologize for what I did to you and Agony." The minute I hear her name tears spring to my eyes, "An apology isn't going to cut it nor make it right. Why did you lie to them that day?" He gazes at me, confused, "What are you-" "Don't pull that with me." I stare intently at him, anticipating an explanation. He doesn't give one.
I release him and start down the rest of the steps. "Jeremy," he calls. But I ignore him, solely stating, "I have to go handle something." I leave him standing there.
"You bastard!" I scream as I fling open the door to Mr. Laufey's class. His current students stare at me, glaring at their teacher. "Do I know you?" He has the gall to act like he doesn't recognize me. I cross the room and heft him up against the wall. Some of his class gasp, and some move out of the way. "Now, before you do anything rash, at least allow my students to head to their next class." I oblige.
Once the students leave the room, I snap at him through fury filled eyes, "I'm the student who you had committed to a mental institute." He smiles faintly, "Why, Jeremy, I presumed they decided to keep you there. I can't believe they let you out." I elbow him, and he still smirks, "Why were you there again?" "You know why!" I shout at him, "You had me put there to keep your secret!" He tips his head to the side curiously, causing me to take a step back, "What's wrong, Jeremy? Lose your nerve? It seems like you've seen a ghost." "Those eyes," I whisper as I peer into those light violet-blue eyes. "What about them?" "You're her father, aren't you?" He looks taken aback, "What are you on about?" "Don't play coy with me. You're related to her, somehow. Your eyes are proof enough of that," I remark, staring into his eyes. "What do you believe you'll accomplish if you continue doing that?" He questions, his eyes narrowing. I don't answer his inquiry, causing his eyes to change to near slits as he continues scrutinizing me.
"Ah, I get it, you expect me to provide you with a response to your question. Suppose you're right about your suspicion, what are you going to do about it?" I take a step back, releasing him, "Why didn't you help her?" He smirks, "Simple. She didn't know she was related to me. No one does, aside from you and her mother." "You're a terrible person," I shake my head in disbelief. His grin goes cat-like, "Is that so? Well, you should understand that by now." I stare into his crazed eyes and observe no remorse, no guilt, nothing. I back away and escape out the door. "Where are you going, Jeremy?" I hear his laughter echo down the hall.
I run until I reach a familiar dirt path through an expanse of trees, which resembled a small forest. "It's smaller than I remember," I mumble, glancing around, momentarily confused. "Oh, Jeremy, fancy seeing you here," I whirl at the sound of his voice and find Jason standing there. "Jason? What are you doing here?" "I could ask you the same question." I stay silent, electing to walk down the long-forgotten path when Jason asks, "Why are you traveling that way?" I turn back, "I still believe Agony's somewhere down this path, and I'm going to find her." He points to the darkening sky, concerned, "But it might rain. Are you sure that's a good idea?" I shake my head at him, "Since when did you care?" He looks away, saying nothing. "That's what I thought," I sigh as I start down the trail.
"Agony?" I call as I look around the birch and pine trees, half expecting to see her. A tide of despair hits me as it dawns on me that she might be gone forever.
By the time I make it to the middle of the path, the clouds break, and it starts raining. "Agony!" I wail as I whirl full circle. I don't spot her. I turn around again and again until I'm dizzy. Still, there's no sign of her. I let a whimper as the drizzle turns into pouring down rain. Almost like Mother Nature wants to drown everything in her path. There's a flash of lightning, the next thing I hear is a loud *crack* causing me to look up. There's nothing but a loud ringing in my ears and darkness.
When my eyes open, I find myself in a beautiful garden, and sitting on a nearby rock overlooking a crystal pond was Agony. As if she sensed she wasn't alone, she turns around with a smile, "Jeremy." I gawk at her for a long moment. "Where have you been? You just disappeared, where did you go?!" I find myself demanding. She stays silent, not saying a word. "Well?! Where the hell did you go? I thought you were dead! Everyone assumed you ran away! Do you have even the faintest inkling of what that did me?!" She goes to say something, but I interrupt her, "No, I don't need to hear your excuses! I want the truth." She stares at me, speechless.
When she doesn't answer, I turn around and step away. I don't hear her voice begging me to wait. She allows me to walk in the opposite direction. I leave her remaining on the rock overlooking the magnificent pool.
                                                                                        The End.

Project: Accident
It all started on Monday, the most tedious day of the week. I was headed to my Science class when I crashed into Lee. "Hey!" he cries out in outrage. "Where do you think you're going?" I inquire as I place my hand on my hip. "I was just..."  he trails off. "Just?" I wait, expectantly. "Not setting another fire again to miss yet another class, are you?" "No!" "Lee, look at me," I murmur as I walk over to him, looking in those seafoam eyes of his, "you can't keep setting fires to get out of every single class. You're going to get in trouble with the Headmaster again." He smirks at me, "When have I ever been caught?" I swat his ocean tinted head, "I'm serious! If you get in trouble again." "Relax, as long as I have you, Issa and Inzo I'll be fine." "Oh! There you are Lee," I hear someone exclaim, I whirl around only to see Issa jogging this way.     "What are you doing, Issa?" I question as she greets us. "I was following him," she points at Lee, "he tried to set another fire. But it didn't catch this time." I turn to glare at Lee, "Seriously?!" "What? I wasn't doing anything, honest! Besides, aren't you supposed to be in Science right now." "Well, I could ask you the same thing." I shoot back. He doesn't respond, he just glances away ashamed. "That's what I thought." Issa pipes up, "Shouldn't we get to Science before the bell?" I slide into my seat next to Ienzo, "Where have you been?" "Hey, I got here before the bell didn't I," I point out as I lean back in my chair, "Besides, not all of us like you." His eyes midnight azure eyes darken, "What are you implying?" I hold up my hands. "That's not what I intended it to sound like. I mean some of us can't arrive early because of certain people," I nod my head in Lee's direction. Ienzo glares with disdain, "You wouldn't have that problem if you let him get in trouble." "You know I can't do that." "Yes, well, then I suppose I should let you know that Lee once again asked me if I thought one of his disastrous methods would work," he grumbles, irritation written all over his face. I pinch the bridge of my nose in annoyance, "Again?"     The teacher starts speaking before Ienzo can reply. "Alright, class, today you will be working in associations for this upcoming Science Fair." The entire class moaned in response. "I don't want to hear it. You get to pick your groups, so stop groaning."      The class split off into their respective gatherings leaving Lee, Issa, Ienzo, this blonde kid and I. "I guess this is our group," I force a smile as I get up from my seat. I approach the corner where everyone is gathered. Lee nods his head toward the blonde kid, "Who's that?" "I don't know," I reply before turning to her. "What's your name?" I ask, still smiling. She jumps when she realizes I'm talking to her. "Who me? I'm Sora." I then turn to Lee, "Her name is Sora." Ienzo only glares at her. I wrap my arm around him as I murmur, "He really means well. That's just how he says hello to everyone he meets."          "So, are we all going to meet at Lee's to finish discussing this or are we going to go somewhere else?" I ask just as class finishes. No one answers. Lee calls out as he's heading out the door, "Of course." Sora looks at me quizzically. "It's where we meet most of the time, I'll give you the address," I wave my hand dismissively as I write the address on a small sheet of paper then hand it to her. You can knock on the door, he should let you in," I say as I go past her and out the door.     "So, does anyone have any ideas," I inquire as I sit down at the table where everyone is gathered. Ienzo just sighs, "Seriously? None of you have any ideas." "I thought we were going to make a volcano with real fire." "No, Lee, we almost got in trouble for that one. Twice."     In the end, Ienzo left the room in favor of going to the kitchen.     "What are you up to, Ienzo?" I ask as I step into the kitchen. "Huh? Oh," he lifts his head as he notices me, "I'm busy making something, obviously. "Annoyed, I cast him a glare, "I understand that. I mean, what are you making?" "Well, I'm trying to come up with potential ideas for the Fair. But I can't really bake," he gestures to a couple blackened pans lying by the sink. "See?" "Um, I can see that. What about that?" I question as I point to a slightly moving piece of... "What is that, anyway?" "Oh! That. This is something that was a major failure." "But what is it?" "I think it was at one point brownie mix. I added some things that are not paired with the usual components." "What did you add to get it to look like that?" "To be honest," he looks away, "I don't remember what I used to get it like that." "What do you mean you have no idea what you used?!" "I wasn't performing an experiment so, I didn't write down what I used. I was only trying out different ideas. Considering everyone out there is completely useless!" he spits the words in anger. "Well, why don't just use this?" "No! Absolutely not!" he moves to grasp the pan. "But we can use it as a symbol of erosion," I reason as I go to grab it. "How about never." "How about we put it to a vote?" I notice his hesitation, for a split second I think I've swayed him. Then it was gone, replaced with outrage, "No way! They'll agree so they won't have to worry about it anymore!" "What if I made them think about it? Besides, that's not true, not everyone is liable to agree with the idea." He lowers his head with a quick, "Fine." "Thank you."     "Is everyone in here?" I ask as I glance around the room. "Good, let's get started. Now all of you in favor of doing a different project," Ienzo and Issa raise their hands, "Okay, now all of you in favor of using this as our plan." Everyone else raises their hands, leaving me as the tiebreaker. "Ienzo, you already understand who I'm going to side with. Which means we apply it to the project." Issa pipes up, "What's it going to be? The project, I mean." "Oh! That's simple, it's going to represent erosion." "Definitely not," Ienzo objects. I turn to face him, "You agreed to put it to a vote." "That was before I knew what you were going to use it for." "We're going to use it for the Science Fair, and that's final." "But we don't even know what it does. For all you know, I accidentally created something incomprehensible for the average human mind to grasp." "Calm down Ienzo, we're going to use this as the project." "Fine," he mumbles through clenched teeth. "But if anything goes wrong, it's on you guys, understand?" he points his finger at all of us, mainly me. We nod our heads in agreement.     "Welcome students to Oblivious High's third annual Science Fair," announces the Headmaster from a nearby podium.      I turn to Lee, "Do you have the project?"  "Well, I did." "What do you mean did?" "I placed it on our table. Did you think I lost it?" He furrows his brows in confusion. "Well, in her defense you have been known to be careless," Ienzo points out. "Stay out of this Ienzo," Lee snarls, "You actually believe I'd misplace that project." "Lee, you have to calm down," Issa reminds him as she grasps his hand, giving it a gentle squeeze before letting go.      "Hey, sorry I'm late," Sora apologizes before gazing at our table concern written on her face. "What's wrong?" "Where's the project?" "On the table, why?" She points to the very empty table, "Did it turn invisible, then?" "Lee, where's the project?" "I have no idea, I set it down on the table and went to find you guys." I turn to Ienzo, who has a rather smug look on his face, "Ienzo, did you take it?" "What? No!" "Then what's with the look?" "Because I told you this was a bad idea but did you listen to me? Noo, you didn't." "Okay, now is not the time to rub it in," I grumble, irritation coating my tone. As we scramble to find the missing project, a scream pierces throughout the stage.      I rush over to the source of the sound where I discover two students cowering in fear and three running toward me, "What are you running from?" They don't answer as they sprint by, they point to something behind them. That's when I notice our project. "Wait... wasn't it smaller when we placed it on the table? Now is not the time to be thinking this," I mutter to myself as I try to think of a solution that won't result in my friends and I in trouble.     "So, what's the plan?" I hear Lee ask as he comes up to me. "I-I don't know. Let me think for a second," I stammer as my mind reels in search of an idea to solve the problem and keep the Headmaster out of it. "Tell me you have a plan." Lee interrupts my concentration. I glare at him as I resume thinking up a solution.    "I got help." I hear someone comment behind me. I whirl around to find Sora with the Headmaster in tow. "Sora," I cry, "We were supposed to come up with a solution that didn't involve the Headmaster." "Why not?" she questions.  "Well, I can't answer that now," I mutter, making a small gesture toward the Headmaster.    "So, this is the project Sora was telling me about," he takes in the scene before him, "Not to worry, children." He turns towards Ienzo, "What did you do?" "I honestly don't know," he responds, looking at the floor. As I gaze a the Headmaster and Ienzo, I see the corners of his mouth tilt up a little. "Why do you look like you're anxious?" I pipe up, "Aren't we going to get in trouble?" He smirks, "On the contrary, you won't be in trouble for this." He gestures to the rampant project. "This is the most fun I've had all week," he exclaims, happily before turning serious again. "Now, do me a favor and fetch one of the teachers, will you?" Issa obeys, running off in the direction of the teachers. "Allow me to dispose of this, please step back," he orders as he lifts a finger in the air. We do as he instructs and everyone takes several steps back. There's a tiny light glowing under our project, small at first gradually growing longer until it covers the entire floor underneath it. It roars at the illumination coming from the Headmaster's hand and goes to charge. I close my eyes, waiting for the impending collision.            I feel someone poke me on the shoulder, "Open your eyes, you have to see this." "What?" "There that should hold it," I hear the Headmaster sigh, "Now, I must say you would have gotten an A if not for the creature's lack of discipline." Ienzo glances away, the red of shame coating his face, "I didn't have the time." "That doesn't excuse the fact that this creature could have destroyed the entire school," the teacher Sora brought over scolds as she waves her hand at the creature and it crumbles then she turns to the Headmaster, "and you know that." The Headmaster stares at her, "Come now, it's fine, Ina." She glares back, outraged, "It's bad enough you always let Mr. Lee off the hook, even though he has endangered the lives of students multiple times." "Ina, let's discuss this in private." She looks at him absolutely livid. "Please." He asks softly. Upon hearing this, I pause.    We wait outside Headmaster Even's office when I turn to Lee, "Is what she said true?"He shrugs his shoulders at me, "More or less." "Something on your mind?" Ienzo inquires. "Something the Headmaster said," I think aloud. "Yeah, what about it?" "He would never say that unless he thought he needed to, but why? Why would he mutter 'please.'?" I wonder just as the door beside us bursts open, and Ms. Lei storms off in the opposite direction. "Ina, wait!" I hear the Headmaster call.    We enter his office and sit down in chairs facing the Headmaster. I'm the first to speak, "Did we do something wrong?" Headmaster Even stares, "Not entirely, no. You know it's against the rules to bring a creature of your own making here without permission, don't you?" We nod our heads in acknowledgment. He pinches the bridge of his nose, "Then can you explain to me why when I asked your teacher if you had permission to bring it in as a project, he said you didn't even ask." We're silent as we try to think of a good reason. When none of us can find one, I tell the truth, "We don't have one, sir." "What's our punishment?" inquires Lee. We all turn to look at Lee aghast. "What? I want to know what our punishment is and get it over with." He turns back to the Headmaster, "So, what's our punishment?" For a moment, the Headmaster looks amused before he answers, "Not all of you will be punished as severely as the rest of you." With that, he asks Ienzo and Sora to step outside      "Now, I understand that this may be harsh but Ms. Stife you will have a week of detention," he turns to Issa next. "Ms. Waer, you will have detention with Ms. Stife. And finally Mr. Fir," he addresses Lee, "You will be suspended for the next week, I have given you plenty of chances." Lee stares at him for a moment, "Fair enough." He looks genuinely surprised like he expected Lee to put up a fight. "Your punishments will begin tomorrow."      "So, how punished are you?" Sora asks as soon as we enter the hallway. "Issa and I got detention for the next seven days and Lee," I gesture to him, "he's suspended for the next week. Our punishments start tomorrow." "That doesn't sound so bad." "That's because it's not," Lee replies evenly.     By the end of next week, everything will have returned to normal.                                                                                                           The End.
