Being a writer your brain is either
A) STUFFED TO BURSTING with ideas you have no clue what to do with or how to make them make sense
or
B) It's a black hole that devours every inkling of creativity in your cells and you are just hoping it'll consume you too
THERE IS NO IN BETWEEN

Hello, friends! I just hit 68,000 words, which means I really am somewhere in the last 10k! (There's just about no way I'll fit the last bit of the story in now, but maybe if I write a caveman draft for the last few chapters, in the style of my beloved Robin from "BBC Ghosts", I can get away with fewer words?)
Violins and Violets - Book One
Salzburg, 1784
19-year-old Katharina Schmidt is under pressure to find a husband and settle down. She and her younger brother Hans are musical prodigies who grew up travelling Europe, but now that they're older, Katharina is told to settle down and be ladylike. Hans - now on a solo tour - sends letters encouraging her to keep composing, and she does so. However, as Katharina becomes friends with other young women in Salzburg, she wonders if she really wants the same things as they do: are marriage and children really for her?

I just hit 65,000 words for this current draft! Because that "78k target" is an absolute limit (I will make myself stop writing when I reach it) rather than a minimum, I'm actually aiming for about 75k total. That means I'm into the last 10,000 words of the story.
At least, I should be. I don't think I am, but I'm going to have to jiggle the pacing around so much in the next draft anyway that I might as well just try to fit it all into the last 10-13k. WIsh me luck!

It has recently occurred to me that to make a second draft after the first one I have to... rewrite the entire thing?? Not just, take the document and, edit ON IT, OVER it.
And that a first draft is not really supposed to be... readable?
Guys I need help,.how do you do drafts??

been thinking about it, and y'know what, even if we had actual a.i. and not Autocomplete Fueled By Plagiarism, and even if it was capable of producing visual art that felt good to look at, or written works that held up for more than a page or two, i would still oppose using a.i. in this way because like. at some point you've gotta ask yourself, what kind of world do you want to live in?
and the fact of the matter is, if we outsource any significant amount of creativity to computer programs, that is going to make it much, much harder for people to make a living being creative. and our capitalist hellscape being what it is, that will ultimately mean fewer people in the world making art. why take any step to bring us farther from the urge to make shit out of nothing? why rush to automate away some of the few tasks that are fun and fulfilling, and can bring joy and meaning to our lives? what jobs will those people have instead? boring jobs? no jobs?
what kind of world do you want to live in?

I absolutely adore Scrivener!
For editing purposes, and because Google absolutely SUCKS at proper spelling now, due to their own AI poisoning their dictionary. I'm making sure that I export my first drafts and putting them into a Scrivener document to compile my data (and also to save it to my PC because its important to save in at least three locations).
And lord can I say... This shit is GORGEOUS
Tumblr media
All it takes is a little tooling around with the program and some tutorials, but by god are the results worth it.
Probably my favorite thing is the fact that I can have all my documents, notes, and character descriptions in one place without having to load new files every time I need to reference something.

Ooh, yum. Added to my reading list!
Also, dark/light academia fans are severely neglecting Last of the Wine by Mary Renault. It’s literally centered on a tight-knit group of friends who are pupils of Socrates the inspiring mentor! And only 1 of these guys is straight!

EARNEST POSTING. while everyone is still working on new year’s resolutions i want to make sure everyone knows about the FREE serial reader app.
Tumblr media
if you are trying to read more classics/public domain works but for whatever reason struggle with incorporating reading into your daily life, or you’re just intimidated by huge books, serial reader is a great tool to make reading more approachable. it works much like dracula daily in that it sends you one excerpt at a time (usually about 10-15 minutes of estimated reading time). awesome for commutes, lunch breaks, quick bedtime story, etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it’s very customizable. you can change fonts, themes, and you can even take notes and highlight. you can also sync with other reading apps like goodreads (no storygraph yet……. we can hope!). the base app is completely free, but there is a one-time optional upgrade fee of $2.99 USD if you want some extra features. this is all developed by one guy, so the money goes to supporting the creator - although i’m sure apple takes their cut 😑.
Tumblr media
there are a ton of works to choose from, currently something like 800+.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
you can now also add your own .epubs to break up your own books into daily serials! very cool, serial reader!
Tumblr media
this was the best app i added last year so i just want to pass it on. happy reading! :)

I just passed 50,000 words!
The first "Violins and Violets" book is now novel-length! I have to shave a lot of it down in the next draft (which will be far more like a second draft than a third) but it's getting there, and I'm enjoying re-reading what I'm writing. That's a lot more than can be said for the very first draft of the first book, which took me months and months to get through, and has large patches of unproofed writing, and quite a few scenes left incomplete. This draft is more like a proper story, and I'm very excited to get it finished.

I saw a very blunt Instagram comment today that told a writer, "AI is going to steal your job soon. You may want to choose something else." It was so nonchalant and casual, like what was just said wasn't heartbreaking to hear.
Can we writers just make a pact just to... not quit? Can we not give in so easily? Can we actually fight to keep our professions and continue to share our own original work? I will never expect writing to be my main source of income, but that does not mean I'm so willing to give it up for the sake of some robot.
