“you tell a joke about a kid who slept in the soil” still makes me feel insane no matter how many times i see it. it is such a tiny, minuscule detail but it packs so much. like. i feel like even without knowing anything, it is somewhat jarring because it is the first hint of a tonal shift. to sleep in the soil feels like very different phrasing than if it was intended as a literal dirt nap. to sleep in the soil feels like clear grave imagery.

(it also feels as if it calls to mind the image of burying a seed for flowers to grow, which would be very appropriate given. their everything. but that may just be me.)

AND it is one of the earlier lines that really solidifies chara’s presence because there is no way for frisk to have known about “a kid who slept in the soil” otherwise. it is such a good way to establish a ghost too. it’s subtle. if you know its there you will see it but if not it may just be somewhat offputting or missed completely

I think it’s incredibly fucked how capitalism discourages learning for learning’s sake. People will have interests they’ve spent years researching then say it’s “useless knowledge” bc it didn’t go towards a college degree and isn’t part of their job. Learning is never useless! Your brain is growing and developing throughout your whole life! People would never have epiphanies or sudden lightening strikes of creativity if they weren’t learning new things! That goes double for topics like science, politics, and history, which inform your understanding of the world you live in!

I like to think that part of the reason Papyrus and Flowey are friends is because they both taught each other a lot about friendship and how relationships take work.

Like, even though we know Flowey likes Papyrus a lot, he’s certainly hurt or killed him before. And even if Papyrus doesn’t quite remember that, it still leaves an impact. So that’s something they would have to deal with if they want to be friends.

Flowey might think he knows the exact formula for becoming Papyrus’s best friend, but that’s not going to work on someone with vague recollections of getting killed by Flowey. Maybe Papyrus would want to push those feelings away and be friends with Flowey anyway, but in the long term, that’s not sustainable for a real friendship. Papyrus may be a very forgiving person, but that doesn’t mean he would trust Flowey or not be afraid of him.

So if they really want to be friends, they’re going to have to be at least a little honest with each other. Maybe that doesn’t happen until everyone’s on the surface, but I like to think they have a conversation about trust and putting effort into their friendship and stuff. And they both learn that relationships aren’t just about being nice or saying the right words.
