It's all bright lights and fireworks before the darkness.

It's screaming until his throat gives out and his lungs ache. It's coming face-to-face with evil and flipping it off. It's thinking about his mom and his dad; about Heather and the others; about Max. It's that once-in-a-lifetime moment - the defining moment. The only moment that counts.

And then it's white-hot, searing pain, followed by numbness. It's total darkness, like somebody's switched off the stars in the night sky. It's black and it's dizzying, and it's falling down, down, down until his back hits the ground.

It's Heaven, or it might be Hell.

Billy can't keep his eyes open. He doesn't fight it; simply lets the wave roll in and drag him out, bring him under. It might be Heaven, or it might be Hell. It's fifty-fifty, or twenty-eighty. It's probably Hell, and Billy's resigned to it. He'll do his time. He deserves it.

There's a crash and it smells like smoke and it's all just black, and Billy's eyes are closed but there are hands on him. Max's voice, telling him hold on. Telling him please.

Another voice, getting closer. "We need to get out of here."

"I can't leave him," Max sobs, and if Billy had any fight left, he'd shake her and tell her to go. Get the hell out. Leave it. Leave me.

"Let me see."

More hands on him. Fingers pressing his wrists and the side of his neck. Hair tickling his face.

"He's alive." The voice says. "Max. He's alive."

"We can't leave him," Max urges, voice breaking.

"We're not going to."

"He's alive?" Max asks, and - she sobs. Her throat finally gives and she sobs. Squeezes Billy's hand. "Is he?"

Am I?

Billy doesn't know who the other voice belongs to, but he wants to ask it the same question. Am I alive? Are you sure? How do you know?

"He's breathing, Max."

Dialogue prompt for the Hellcheer thing because I love your writing and I love Hellcheer...

"What do you actually see in me? Be honest."

Chrissy is sitting on the edge of Eddie’s bed, flipping through a comic book he left there this morning.

She’s been staying over every Friday night for the past month, telling her parents she’s staying at Stacey Carmichael’s house instead.

Eddie watches her from his spot in the doorway. She’s swearing one of his t-shirts. A Black Sabbath one that has a rip in the collar and is so worn out it’s not even black anymore, more like a muted grey. She’s not wearing any pants, just her cheer socks that go all the way up her shins.

She’s every teenage boys wet dream right now.

Her dainty fingers slide across the comic and Eddie has no idea how he got this lucky.

"What do you actually see in me? Be honest." Eddie blurts out, still standing in the door way.

Chrissy looks up from the comic with a frown. “What?”

“C’mon, Chris. What do you see in me? How can this,” he points to himself, “and this,” and then points to his surroundings, “have any appeal?”

Chrissy closes the comic book and puts it softy on the bed before looking up at Eddie with a frown so deep that Eddie’s worried the lines might stick to her smooth skin.

“You see me.” She says softy. “For who I am. Not who this stupid town thinks I am.”

She stands up, “But it’s not just that. You’re kind, the way you take care of those freshman at school, and I know you drive that curly head one home after D&D on Wednesday nights.”

She takes a step closer, “And you’re funny. You make me laugh more than anyone I know.”

She shuffles just a little bit closer till they’re an inch from each other.

Putting her tiny hands against his stomach, she slides them up to connect around his neck. Eddie’s hands automatically find her waist.

“Oh.” Eddie says with a smile.

“Oh.” She smiles back.
