Piazza Navona is known to be one of the largest and most beautiful piazza squares in Rome. It has 3 with impressive fountains. We didn’t walk to the south side of the square, so we only saw Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi in the center and Fontana di Nettuno on the north side. Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (the fountain of 4 rivers) was designed by Bernini and has a large obelisk in the centre and was made in 1651. Lunch with a view of the Pantheon ... most historians think Emperor Augustus right hand, Agrippa, had the first Pantheon built in 27 BC. It later burned in the great fire of 80 AD but was rebuilt by Emperor Domitian. Unfortunately in 110 AD. it was struck by lightning and burned again. The Pantheon we know and see today was later built in 120 AD. The center of the giant dome is know as “The eye of the Pantheon” (oculus). Its the largest unsupported dome in the world with a diameter of 43.30 meters. In front of the Pantheon is the “Fountain of the Pantheon”. It was designed by Giacomo Della Porta in 1575. No rest for the weary ... up next was the Crypts & Catacombs tour underneath the Eternal City of Rome. First up was the Catacombs of Domitilla, they were dug out of the ground over 2000 years ago. Then we toured the Basilica of San Clemente that sits in top of a 4th-century basilica, which in turn also sits above a mysterious 2nd-century Oriental shrine and an aqueduct which still flows today. It’s incredible when you realize your walking within a structure built between 72 A.D & 80 A.D. ... so rich in History. The Coloseum was built under Emperor Vespasian and made from stone and concrete. It’s the largest amphitheater in the world, measuring 189m L, 156m W and 50m H. The first games held in the Colosseum were in 80 A.D, under Emperor Titus. Fun Fact, the games ran for 100 days straight. At one point the Colosseum had 80 entrances and sat 50,000 spectators for sporting events and games. These events included the famous gladiatorial combats and wild animal hunts which were extremely brutal. Under the Colosseum stage floors were various rooms and underground passages where the animals and gladiators were kept. It even had 36 trap doors used for special effects.
