Rereading the FMA manga while rewatching FMAB has probably brought down my opinion on the anime a little bit tbh. It still holds a special place in my heart and I love it to bits and I can't even imagine how hard it would be to make an adaption that good with the sort of timeline they were working with, but the manga's pacing feels a lot more natural and the character writing feels much more subtle and nuanced. Edward comes across less as a cool-guy wish-fullfillment character with occasional dorky moments and more like an actual traumatized teenager with occasional badass moments. Anime Alphonse is just a sweet little uwu softboi while Manga Alphonse feels like he's constantly suppressing himself, partly because he feels like a burden and partly because he knows that if he gets pissed he could end up seriously hurting someone.

I haven't gotten to the Ishval arc yet, but I'm already kinda dreading it. That shit destroyed me as a kid, and I was always kinda 'meh' about it in the anime, so reading and watching side-by-side will be... Something.

#fma #fma manga #fmab #yeah this has always been my view on fmab #it's a solid adaptation that's faithful to the source material AND makes sense on its own #but it IS a consensed adaptation of already densely plotted source material #so a significant portion of the nuance gets lost #and they definitely tried to smooth over some of the more emotionally difficult aspects of the story #which always comes across as a bit dishonest to me. #it's a faithful enough adaptation that the emotionally difficult implications ARE still there #but now the narrative is like telling you that it's definitely all fine and dandy and don't worry #which... the manga didn't do nearly as often?
