The Beacon Hills Paleontology exhibit in its natural history museum was small but mighty, especially with the new paleontologist: doctor Briarcliff. Teens were encouraged to join the youth program, volunteers aging from 13-18.

But when a sketchy fossil infects more than half of the volunteers, those teens are thrown into the world of the supernatural: weredinosaurs.

A year later, and there are only three left, having escaped the grasp of the Paleontologist and created their own little pack. But is he really gone?

Of course, with everything moving so fast, her waking up with only ten minutes to spare, that morning- she hadn’t had a chance to mull over her most recent freakshow of a dream.

Red eyes, snarling, gnashing teeth, the hot breath of a wild creature.

Lia shuts her eyes and blocks out the memory, she sits on her hands to keep herself from covering her ears wishing they’d hurry up and get there as fast as possible. The less time she has to worry the better. She’s been telling herself that even though she has a lot of dreams that come true, one featuring werewolves is just impossible. 

The sooner school begins and nothing supernatural happens, the sooner Lia can go back to her regularly scheduled nights of knowing the forecast for the week and if her mother is gonna be home for the weekend or not.

“Don’t be nervous!” Bobby yells because of course he’s the type of person to try to make conversation with the radio being at full volume, “everyone there’s a shithead! You’ll fit right in!”

A few horrifying lyrics about spine ripping and arms flailing go by before he realizes what he said.

“Not that you’re a shithead! I just mean-”

Lia laughs and saves him from his own foot-in-mouth disease.

“You had it right the first time. I am a shithead!”

Thankfully her prayers worked for once, she realizes, as they pull into a street lined with trees and teenagers.

Ahh the road to hell, Lia can’t help but sneer as heads whip around to stare.

Bobby pulls into the teacher’s parking lot, thankfully closer to the office than the other entrance (according to the somewhat dusty map Bobby had given her the night before.) He shuts the music off and stares intently at Lia. Lia blanks. She blinks, once, twice, when suddenly- he claps a hand down on her shoulder. Oh god. Inspirational speech, she thought- but it was too late to stop him.

“I know I’m only your stepdad but you can come to me. Let me know if any of the lacrosse guys give you trouble, and I’ll have em crying before lunch!”

As awkward as it is and as much as she yearns to reject him, Bobby’s being a good guy so far. She’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and not outright detest him like all of her mom’s other ex’s. 

“Thanks, Bosbster” Lia grins cheekily at the lame nickname and all but jumps out of the car.

“Do! Not! Call me that on campus!” He hollers, sticking his head out the rolled-down window and watching her dart off in the opposite direction of where she’s supposed to go.

Oh well, he thinks, she’ll figure it out.

With a burning face and a fully surrounded hallway- Lia does not figure it out. Well, at least not until it’s almost too late. Busybodies amble inside of classrooms, all sparing her looks of curiosity. But she feels way too threatened, with the way they look her up and down, to ask for directions. Luckily it’s almost like someone sees her and can relate because before the hallway clears, a specific brunette exits one of the left-hand classrooms with a searching gaze until her eyes land on Lia.

She makes confident strides towards the ever-growing-confused Lia carrying a friendly smile on her face.

“You’re new right?  Coach Finstock’s stepdaughter?”

Lia eyes her hesitantly. She seems nice enough, so she jumps to reply- not wanting to lose her one lifeline in the sea of strangers.

“Yes! The office!” Lia blushes because fuck of course she sounds like an idiot in front of a hot girl “I mean…I’m looking for the office.”

“I’m Allison, I was new last year so don’t even worry about it” Lia’s heart stutters as Allison swoops her hand down to guide her “I’ll show you the way. My grandpas starting as principal, actually.”

She allows herself to be tugged along and listens as Allison nicely gives her a verbal detailing of the school. How to know which spots of campus she’s in, little things she figured out when she first transferred there. But not wanting to make too much of a connection having just arrived- Lia drops Allison’s probably platonic grip as they arrive at their destination….. [to be continued.]

I have more written but ch1 is turning out to be longer than I expected so I wanted to give yall a taste early :)
