Dude, P@ul didn't have depth. He had a pathetic and half-assed backstory that did nothing to make him sympathetic. Also, don't compare him to Gary. The narrative constantly justified P@ul by going "lol different training methods!!!1!1" and P@ul never actually developed and we're just supposed to accept he's better now, even though we never see him improve.

Gary's development was largely off-screen, but he was also never an abuser. It was easier to swallow. He, unlike P@ul, also faced consequences.

Also, Iris is not a static character. Do you know what that means? Dawn is a static character. Iris is not. Iris literally has tons of development, and if you think there "isn't much to her" as a character then you just weren't paying attention.

About the phrase above listed in your bio title, I felt that it was a good idea to outright say the whole "what a kid" phrase to my own mother, who's pretty much the only person I felt bad for. Anyways, the MO behind it is to prove how annoying it'd be if one of Iris's phrases was even said in real life. She pretty much let out an annoyed "What?" as a result.

That's not a great comparison, because Iris was calling her friend around her own age a kid, not a parental figure.

Additionally, when doing such an experiment, you need a larger test group than one (1) person. I've called both my younger brother and my dad kids before. Both are adults, and neither was particularly annoyed.

It's not a big deal, nor is it really that annoying, especially since she didn't say it as often as people act like she did.

After leaving the Pokemon fanbase for a year, I find it weird how these ADULT fans of the show really hate these child characters. These characters are literal children and they are holding child characters to very high standards. I pray these fans never have kids...they don't need to with their child hater attitudes.

Exactly. These people act like they've never interacted with a child before, and honestly, I kind of hope they haven't. They clearly don't have the patience to.

Personally, I think that fans who hate child characters with a burning passion need therapy. It's okay to not be a fan of those child characters if you find their personalities annoying, but if you hate them to the point that you are triggered when people say nice things about them...then go to therapy.

Like there are child characters I dislike, but do I think about how much I hate them every second of the day and get bent out of shape any time I see someone talk about how much they like them?

1) ash hasnt had symptoms of ASD throughout the whole series

2) XY didn’t change his character tremendously too into a battle robot with no emotions but “YAY BATTLES”

Haven't started Horizons yet, but this sure is...a take.

They're certainly eager to push aside the female protag and deem her a bad character (which from what I've read, she isn't) for the male protag.

Also damsel in distress??? What??? How does being from a rich family = damsel in distress???

And of course they bring up Ash. Even when he's not in the show anymore, they have to constantly mention him because they can't accept he's not coming back.

Second, Ash Ketchum has always been an autistic-coded character, from all the way back to the OS. I know because I am autistic. The XY incarnation of the character (which yes, is the worst incarnation of the character) is bad because a) it turned him into a one-note Gary Stu, and b) removed a lot of his neurodivergent traits in favor of making him """badass""".

Did I ever claim BW Ash was a good incarnation of the character? Despite liking BW overall, I do think BW!Ash was mishandled. But again, autistic is not an insult/synonym for "stupid" (seriously, go ahead and explain what you meant by "severely autistic"), and it should not be used as such.

Hence why I don’t go there.  Disliking XY and DP isn’t a super popular opinion on other subreddits such as the main Pokémon sub, but you can at least voice them there without being downvoted into oblivion by a hivemind.  Unlike on the Pokémon anime subreddit, which is nothing more than an echo chamber of DP/XY Stans who can’t handle criticism.

With the Paul episode on the horizon im really really nervous abt how they’re going to handle him

It kind of just...met my expectations, but didn't surpass them. It wasn't an awful episode by any means, and it's all well and good that P@ul is no longer actively campaigning for the Asshole of the Year Award.

But we still haven't seen him actually recognizing that his previous actions were harmful. We have yet to see any actual remorse from him, let alone anything resembling an apology. He still only changed because Ash defeated him back in DP (and thus his abusive methods stopped getting results), not because his actions were wrong. If you're going to copy Silver's arc, copy it correctly, anime writers.

They went a bit too hard on the P@ul shilling, too. Like...having Goh say "he's way too cool" after hearing the Chimchar story earlier in the episode??? Really writers?

And having Infernape take order from P@ul was...not a good look, to put it delicately. Infernape is not in a split custody agreement with Ash and P@ul. P@ul abused and abandoned Infernape. Infernape reconciling with P@ul is one thing, but Infernape probably shouldn't be taking order from him.
