Like So Many Fireworks
Rating: Teen
Pairing: Thoma/Yoimiya
Summary: A quick outing for dinner turns into something more.
“Okay, I aired out all the futons and pillows, washed the tatami, organized the practice room,” Thoma paused, carefully reviewing the state of the Kamisato residence, “hmm I feel like there’s something I forgot to do.” With both his lord and lady were away on official business, he had taken the opportunity to do some overdue deep cleaning.
His stomach answered him with a loud grumble. “Oh, right, dinner.” He laughed to himself at his own oversight. In his haste to get the cleaning done, he had neglected to go to the market earlier today, so there wouldn’t be much to choose from in the kitchen.
He shrugged on his jacket and headed out to Inazuma City. After all, the weather was clear and the night was still young, making it the perfect opportunity to try something new.
- - -
“Thoma!” Yoimiya waved from the counter at Shimura’s, smiling warmly as he sat down next to her. “What are you doing here all by yourself?”
He gave her a bashful smile “well, since I’m at the estate by myself, I got so caught up in cleaning I forgot to go to the market today. So I decided to get myself dinner, but I didn’t expect to see you here!”
Yoimiya laughed, “you too, huh? I was so busy working on a new firework for Guuji Yae, before I knew it the sun was going down!”
“If you wouldn’t mind the company, you could join me, it’d be my treat of course.” He hadn’t expected to run into anyone but seeing Yoimiya had been an unexpected surprise.
“I couldn’t let you pay for me, I can buy my own dinner.” She nudged him, giggling, “or are you asking me out on a date?”
“What I-no, not at all, I just, I mean-” he looked away, rubbing the back of his neck,“the estate just gets a little lonely when the Kamisatos are away.” Which was true. Even though he kept himself busy, he found himself missing the camaraderie of his lord and lady. But as soon as Yoimiya asked the question, he felt a fuse catch, slowly burning and illuminating something new.
She squeezed his forearm and gave him a dazzling smile. “Well, I can’t say no to free food with such excellent company. Let’s look at the menu!”
- - -
Thoma had only meant to have a quick bite to eat, but it turned into a meal with Yoimiya. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and he was excited to explore the menu with her and try new things. Between bites, he found himself engrossed in their conversation, with Yoimiya making even the minutiae of her day sound interesting. Or she would ask him questions, prompting him to tell stories of his own, while she listened carefully, her chin propped in her hand.
He barely noticed anyone else around them, and before they both knew it, Shimura-san was shooing them away so he could close up for the night. They stood a few paces from the restaurant, reluctant, waiting. There was a warmth and contentment deep in his bones, and a flash of something else. Fluttering in the back of his mind, the way fireworks leave pinpricks of light behind when you close your eyes.
“I hate to end the night here, but I should probably get home.” Yoimiya’s smile was softer, and maybe sleepier, but no less dazzling.
“Oh, of course! I’ll walk with you.” If nothing else, Thoma’s sense of camaraderie would carry him through this. Friends always looked after each other, so it’s only natural he would accompany her.
An ocean breeze stirred up the sakura blooms scattered around them, which wasn’t anything that unusual for hanamizaka residents, but something about it felt different tonight. Maybe it was the moon looming low and golden on the horizon, or maybe it was the warmth in his stomach Thoma couldn’t entirely attribute to the meal.
The silence between them made the short journey to Nagonahara Fireworks feel endless. When they arrived, Thoma felt a bittersweet mix of relief and disappointment. He didn’t want the night to end, not really, but where else could it possibly lead?
“Thanks for walking me home. You didn’t have to, but I guess it’s on your way.”
“What kind of a friend would I be if I let you walk home alone?”
“I wouldn’t hold it against you.” Yoimiya turned to unlock the door but stopped, suddenly blurting out, “Iwouldhavebeenokaywithitbeingadate!”
“Wait, what?” Thoma’s breath caught in his throat, warmth turning to prickling heat that rushed to his face.
Yoimiya turned around to face him, embarrassed. She closed her eyes and leaned back against the door, taking a few deep breaths. “I wouldn’t have minded if tonight had been a date. With you. But you looked confused when I asked you, so if that weirds you out, I understand.”
Even in the dim light, he could see the nervous tremble of her lower lip,  and suddenly ached to feel it against his own. He took a step forward, pressing his palm flat above her head, steadying himself.
“It doesn’t weird me out. I was just nervous.” He laughed softly, “it wasn’t my intention when I asked you to join me, I was happy to spend the evening with a good friend. But when you asked if it was a date, I realized I really wanted it to be.” The fuse curling up into the capsule, a line of bright light into the sky; this was the space between before and after.
“Oh.” Yoimiya’s gaze followed the taut line of his arm, flickering up to his face with a cheeky half smile. “If that’s true, then we should probably end the evening here, but there’s one more thing left to do.”
A split second of darkness, then a flash of sparkling light.
Deft fingers tangled tight in his shirt, pulling him down, his heartbeat echoing in his ears like so many fireworks. Their lips pressed together, softer and sweeter than the best tricolor dango, she shivered as he grazed his palm over her bare shoulder, holding her close.
Yoimiya’s hands slid under his jacket, still holding tight even as Thoma broke away, pausing to leave a soft kiss at the corner of her lips.
“Wow.” He could feel his cheeks pressed into a goofy grin, unable to stop smiling no matter how hard he tried.
“Isn’t that what people do?” Yoimiya was back to her usual bubbly self, with a distinctly coy note to her voice. “If you go on a date, shouldn’t the night end with a kiss?”
“I’m not complaining, I just wasn’t expecting-it wasn’t…wow.” He was mortified by his own fluster.
“Good ‘wow’ or bad ‘wow’?”
The hesitation in her eyes spurred him to action, “good, no, great ‘wow!’” He pressed his forehead to the top of her head, his voice gentle, “or maybe a ‘can I see you again “wow?”’”
Yoimiya giggled, “that’s the best ‘wow.’” She stepped back, returning his goofy grin with one of her own, “and you should stop by the shop tomorrow at closing so we can figure it out.’
Thoma watched her unlock the door, turning to wave goodnight, but before she could say anything, he grabbed her hand. Pulling her close, he gave her one more fierce kiss and pulled away.
“It’s a date.”

Cold Nights & Candlelight
Rating: Teen
Pairing: Chilumi
Summary: If you make a promise you keep it, and that includes visiting friends for the holidays.
The sea wind whipped at Lumine's hair as she tread carefully on the slick docks. Paimon trailed nervously behind her, looking decidedly more round than usual thanks to her heavy winter gear. "Are you sure it's okay that we're doing this? What if the Tsaritsa finds out?"
She shrugged. “We’re nowhere near the palace, I’m sure it’ll be fine. Besides, we’ve been invited.” She reached into her pocket and pulled out the letter. Tonia’s cursive held the invitation, asking if she’d please come visit during the holidays.
At the end of the letter was Teucer’s brightly colored scrawl, “Miss Nice Lady, can you and your friend please come light the candles with us? I would be very happy to see you again.” The dates and village address were included underneath in a third, very tidy hand.
She showed the letter to a carriage driver, who nodded and beckoned to the back. Soon they were on their way, with the quaint scenery of Morepesok moving slowly by. Leaning back with a sigh, she shut her eyes and waited, hoping a moment of relative solitude would calm her nerves.
Finally the carriage slowed, then stopped. A slender walkway was lined with piles of snow, leading to a modest house, where the first floor windows lit with a warm glow. Lumine gathered her things and exited the carriage, taking a tentative step on the walk.
The carriage moved further away as she prepared for the last, and what felt like the longest part of her journey, but all she could do was keep walking. Finally her hand was up, ready to knock when the door was whipped open, a tiny cannonball of a person barreling into her torso.
“Miss Nice Lady you came!” Teucer grabbed her hand and pulled her inside, his face lit up with a brilliant smile. “Tonia! Miss Nice Lady is here just like you asked!” There was a flurry of footsteps and she found herself surrounded by freckled, smiling faces.
“Nu, you’ll scare the poor girl away, give her some room.” They parted for a small, energetic woman, wiping her hands on a tea towel. She had eyes as blue as Childe’s but her hair was a riot of strawberry blonde curls, held off her face with a kerchief.
“Paimon and Lumine, welcome to our home. I’m Ajax’s mother Anya, and in spite of my family’s curiosity overwhelming their manners, we are truly glad you could join us.” She squeezed Lumine’s hands for just a moment before turning back to her family.
“Anton, Tonia, can you take their things to the spare room? Teucer, come help me put together some food for our guests.”
Lumine looked around in confusion, “is there anything I can do? I would love a chance to stretch, and I can cook a bit.”
“Paimon thinks you’re a great cook!” She turned towards Anya and Teucer. “She makes all our food when we’re traveling and it’s sooo good!” The fairy grinned and rubbed her stomach in appreciation.
“Well it’s always good to have another pair of hands, come, we’re making latkes.” Lumine tied her hair up, although given the awkward length, she couldn’t avoid a few small pieces falling out and framing her face. Teucer handed her an apron and directed her to the washbin while he pushed a stool up to the counter.
Hands clean and apron on, Lumine stood ready. Teucer began to explain the process, and in his excitement nearly tumbled off the stool before Lumine simply picked him up and sat him down with a laugh. She picked up the process quickly, and soon the air warmed with the scent of frying potatoes.
- - -
Childe shut the door to the small smokehouse with a creak. “I’ll come back tomorrow morning and oil the hinges.”
His father nodded and they began to walk back through the woods in the peaceful quiet of a winter afternoon, but it wasn’t long before he spoke up again. “Something on your mind?”
Childe let out a soft laugh. Even with only a few words between them, his father always knew. “Teucer and Tonia invited friends of mine to celebrate with us. I was hoping they would be able to make it.” His disappointment was apparent in the things left unsaid.
He took the strings of smoked birds and fish from his father, wanting anything besides his own dismay to occupy his attention. After a few minutes filled by the fresh snowfall squeaking under their feet, his father spoke up.
“It’s good to have hope, but distance creates challenges. We’ve learned well to manage them as a family but it takes time. Perhaps it wasn’t meant to be this year, but our door doesn’t close easily.”
The kindness in his voice made Childe’s chest tighten. As terrifying as Teucer’s surprise visit had been all those months ago, he was secretly thrilled to see him. And even now, it had been so long since he’d seen his family, but it was like nothing had changed. Being home for the holiday, finding out Lumine might visit, it was enough to overwhelm him.
The smells of the kitchen wafted through the woods. “Hmm, they’re making latkes, we’ll be getting started soon. Why don’t you-” his father looked at the house and stopped, running his hands over his fiery red beard to try and hide a smile. “Bring the food in to your mother, I’ll go get washed up.”
Childe nodded and made his way inside, toeing off his boots in the mudroom. He leaned on the doorway, soaking up the kitchen’s warmth. “Mama, I’m back with-” There she was. Cheeks pink from the heat, she was laughing with Teucer while they worked with his mother to prep the pyrizhky for dessert. Lumine turned to him, her golden eyes wide.
A hush swept the kitchen. All he could see was her, and the sight left him speechless. He felt like he was sleepwalking, dropping the food on the counter, his jacket on a chair, and just like that he was in front of her. “Hey girlie.”
“Hi.” He grabbed her hands, and she gasped softly. “Your hands are cold and,” she looked down, “dirty.”
“Yours are too, what’s wrong with that?”
She rolled her eyes, but smiled all the same. “I’m annoyed I have to stop what I’m doing to wash my hands again.”
A boisterous laugh broke the tension. “I like this girl!” His mother walked over and patted his cheek, smiling warmly. “Good job with her sheifale .” Her voice was low, keeping it between them. She winked and spoke a bit louder, “now go wash up, both of you, it’s nearly time.”
He led her to the washroom but before she could move, his arms were around her. He leaned back against the door, giving them a brief reprieve from everyone and everything else. She melted against him and they stood together, trying to make the moment last. “Is this real?” He breathed into her hair.
“I’m really here.” She held onto him, sighing as he dropped to his knees and laid his head against her abdomen. She stroked his hair, occasionally toying with a stray piece. “We should probably get back before they start to talk.”
“Girlie, they were talking before you even arrived, believe me.” He reluctantly stood up and stretched, “but we don’t want to be late, it’s nearly sunset.”
They washed up and Lumine moved to leave, once again finding her back to the door. He smiled and pressed his palm just above her head and leaned in, their foreheads touching. “I didn’t think you would come.”
She smiled softly, “how could I say no to Teucer and Tonia?”
“What about me?”
“You?” She gave him a quizzical expression.
He laughed softly, “who do you think gave you the address and the dates?” His lips barely brushed hers as she smiled.
“I wondered who that could be.” She wrapped her arms around his waist, hands sneaking under the hem of his shirt, seeking out the heat of his lower back. Stretching herself to her fullest height, she quickly closed what little distance there was between them.
The kiss was a reminder, a promise, or maybe just a way to keep him on his toes. She couldn’t help holding him close, his tongue tracing her lower lip. But quick as a sigh, he pulled away, regret clear on his face.
“As much as I want to play, that's a dangerous game, starlight.”
They were both flushed and flustered from the all too brief contact, well aware of the implications of lingering too long. Inquisitive glances, knocking on doors, or worse yet, actual questions regarding their whereabouts; neither had the patience nor energy for any of it.
“Later?”
“Later.”
A smile, and a promise, pinkies briefly linked without thinking as they descended the stairs. They would find each other, even if all the candles had burned out, even in the coldest, deepest dark of the night.

Halloween Hijinks
Note: I think we were all a little emotionally devastated by that character teaser so I tried to riff on it a little here. It's a bit late for Halloween but I'm one of those spooky nerds, sorry, goths, who would be happy celebrating Halloween all the time.
Rating: Gen
Characters: Lumine, Paimon, Nahida
Summary: Now that Nahida is free from the Sanctuary of Surasthana, Lumine and Paimon decided to bring her along to Mondstadt for a much deserved night of fun.
Flowers. There were flowers everywhere. All I can see are flowers.
Nahida blinked slowly, her vision a riot of color as she began to wake up. For a moment, she forgot where she was, the strangeness of her surroundings activating a panic deep in her stomach. She grabbed at the colors and the rustling softness of them surprised her. It was then that she realized they weren’t real, just fabric, and she wasn’t trapped, just tangled.
In a dress, no, what had Lumine and Paimon called it?
“Heehee, it’s a flower fairy costume! Paimon thinks it suits you!”
“Costumes are traditional at Halloween. But it’s just a bit of fun, and for once I agree with Paimon, I think this costume will look very pretty on you.”
“Hey! What do you mean ‘for once!?’”
Hopping off the bed, she adjusted the diaphanous layers of her outfit enough to be presentable, and carefully padded down the stairs in Lumine’s abode, towards the happy commotion on the floor below. Paimon was floating in circles, trying to adjust the white scarf that somehow managed to be wrapped around her entire torso.
Lumine had a tender, if exasperated expression as she carefully untangled the fabric. Once it was floating freely as intended, she turned around, giving Nahida a brilliant smile.
“Hey! How did you sleep?”
“I slept well, thank you.” She looked between her new friends, trying to pinpoint what was different about them. “I must ask, why are you wearing each other’s clothes?”
“You noticed!” Paimon proudly placed her hands on her hips, “these are our costumes! I’m Lumine and Lumine is Paimon!”
“We thought it would be fun to switch.”
“But shouldn’t your costumes be more…” she concentrated, trying her best to find the right word, “fantastical?”
“That’s the fun of Halloween, you can dress up however you want!” Paimon wagged her finger as she spoke, “and Paimon really wanted to dress up as Lumine! But she said it was too dangerous for me to have a sword so it’s incomplete.”
She pouted briefly before floating in front of Nahida. “But that’s okay, Paimon looks great, and so does Lumine, since she’s dressed as Paimon! Nahida, did you want help finishing your costume?”
Nahida spun around in front of a nearby mirror, examining her outfit from every angle. “I don’t know, I thought I was ready?”
“Well, there are a few more things we could add, if you want?” Lumine held out a pair of opalescent wings, shimmering and delicate. “What do you think?”
Nahida nodded and held out her arms, patiently waiting while Lumine and Paimon fussed over her, adjusting her outfit and accessories until they both stepped back with scrutinous expressions.
“It needs…something. Paimon isn’t sure what though.”
“I’ve got just the thing!” Lumine reached into her sub-space bag and carefully pulled something out. Even without touching it, Nahida could sense the energy radiating off of the flower crown.
“Where did you-?” Her heart tightened at the feeling of energy that was distinct to Sumeru.
“It’s from the Aranara.” Lumine placed the crown on her head, her voice reverent, “oh, Nahida, it’s perfect.” Even Paimon fell silent, her starry eyes soft as she watched the small Archon twirl in front of the mirror.
“Are you sure it’s okay for me to wear this? A gift from the Aranara is not one to be taken lightly.” She couldn’t help but love it, feeling the affection and trust woven through each petal and leaf.
Lumine gave her a gentle smile, “I can’t imagine anyone else they’d let wear it.”
The air felt heavy, and almost solemn, until a growling noise cut through the silence. “Perhaps we have time for a snack before we leave?” Nahida giggled and blushed, holding her hands over her stomach.
“You read my mind!” Paimon giggled, “I think we have some leftover lotus seed crisp, come on!”
Nahida couldn’t help but laugh and followed, excited for both the food and the forthcoming adventure.
- - -
The trio had barely passed through the city gate of Mondstadt when a blur of blonde hair slammed into Lumine’s legs.
“Miss Lumine! Paimon! Happy Halloween!”
Lumine laughed, “hi Klee, happy Halloween.” She picked the giggling girl and held her in a tight hug, but it didn’t last long as she quickly wiggled out of her grasp.
“Nuh-uh, there’s more trick or treating to do. Hey, who are you?” Klee skipped towards Nahida, “I’m Klee! I’ve never seen you before, but I like your costume, it’s so pretty!”
“I’m Nahida,” she gave Klee a shy smile, “I like your cat costume. Are you also friends with Lumine and Paimon?”
“Thanks! Miss Lumine and Paimon are the best, and they always take Klee on the best adventures! Nahida, are you trick or treating? You should come with us, we can show you the best spots!”
Nahida glanced back at her friends, who nodded enthusiastically in return. “Thanks, I would love to!”
“Yay! Let’s go, let’s go! Klee and Kaeya have just gotten started!” Klee tightly grabbed her hand and pulled her down the street.
Lumine watched Paimon, Klee and Nahida stop at Schmidt’s Smithy, heartened to see Wagner himself pass out treat bags to each of them.
“Am I correct in assuming there’s more to little Nahida than meets the eye?”
She turned towards Kaeya, trying to keep a straight face in spite of the opulent pirate costume he was wearing. “And if all I said is that you’re right?”
“Well, I suppose I’ll be satisfied to hear you say it, and just have to live with a bit of mystery.” He nodded at her.
“Speaking of mysteries, why are you accompanying Klee? Where’s Albedo?”
Kaeya held out his hands, “I’ve also been escorting Klee on Halloween night for a few years now, so it’s a tradition at this point, right Klee?”
The little girl ran around both of them, “yeah, Kaeya is the best! He knows all the good spots to get the yummiest treats!” She held out her arms to balance before quickly returning to Paimon and Nahida, directing them to their next destination.
Finally they reached Angel’s Share, which was adorned with cheerful, festive decorations. When Lumine gave Kaeya a surprised look, he merely shrugged with his trademark inscrutable grin. Before they could approach the tables, a warm, soft breeze, strewn with dandelion seeds, enveloped them.
“It’s you, I’ve finally found you.” Venti hovered above them on outstretched wings, his white and gold outfit reminiscent of the Barbatos statues strewn across Mondstadt. He landed on the ground and kneeled in front of Nahida, immediately taking her into his arms, his wings enclosing them.
They conversed softly, with Nahida melting into Venti’s embrace the more he spoke to her. Lumine looked at Kaeya, who nodded and led Klee to the tables laden with treats.
Lumine trusted Venti the most out of all the Archons, but she was still protective of Nahida given everything she went through. As the conversation continued, she could feel her resolve weaken, especially when Nahida laughed at something Venti said and it lit up her whole face. He wiped away an errant tear on her cheek and stood up, taking her hand and walking over to Lumine and Paimon.
“Tone-Deaf Bard! What are you even supposed to be in that outfit?”
“Why I’m Barbatos of course!” Before anyone could object, he winked and held a finger to his lips, “who better to be than the god of freedom and song?”
“That’s not how this is supposed to work!” Paimon stomped her foot in mid-air, “Halloween is ‘come as you aren’t,’ not ‘come as who you really are!’”
“I don’t think those are all that different?” Venti gave them a sly smile, his wings folding neatly against his back.
“I hadn’t considered it before, but I think there is some truth to that.” Nahida looked up at them with a thoughtful expression, “in a way, the self we present to the public is a kind of costume, so using a light-hearted holiday to simply dress as another version of ourselves seems ideal. But it’s also fun!” She giggled and grabbed Venti’s hand, “Barbatos, or Venti, thank you for welcoming me to Mondstadt, I’ve been wanting to visit for so long.”
“Nahida, I couldn’t wait to meet you. And of course Mondstadt will always be open to Sumeru, the Dendro Archon, and those she holds dear. But come on, there’s delicious food to be had and mulled wine to sample!”
Lumine approached the first few tables, “Hi Charles, I like your adventurer costume, it looks very snappy!”
The bartender laughed and looked a bit sheepish, “it’s nice to see you again Lumine, or should I say Paimon?”
“Hey Paimon’s right here! But it’s definitely a good costume, Charles. Now Paimon heard there might be some candy?”
“There’s mulled wine and Diluc’s special blend of grape juice, plus candy for anyone in costume, so here you go!” Paimon, Klee, and Nahida compared their candy while Lumine grabbed some grape juice for later and Venti and Kaeya both grabbed steaming cups of mulled wine.
“Ah, nothing hits the spot on a cool autumn evening quite like a spicy cup of mulled wine!” Venti grinned, “between all the decorations and treats, it would appear Angel’s Share is the spot to beat.”
“Just like every other year, it’s unlikely to beat the Knights of Favonius,” Kaeya replied in mock resignation. “But it’s certainly a good try.”
“Is there an actual competition?”
“Not really, it’s just bragging rights based purely on gossip. But the Knights of Favonius has been picked as the Halloween spot every year for as long as anyone can remember. I think this might be Angel’s Share year, especially with this delicious wine.”
“Hmm, the mulled wine is good,” Kaeya finished his cup and stood up from the table with one last look at Venti, “but we’ve got Noelle. Happy Halloween, bard.”
- - -
“Nahida! Look, this is Klee’s home. Well, it’s not Klee’s home with mommy, but this is where Klee lives with Albedo, and Jean, and Kaeya, and Sucrose, what do you think?”
“Whoa Kaeya, you weren’t kidding!” Paimon, Lumine, and Nahida stopped and stared at the Knights of Favonius headquarters. Pumpkins, spiderwebs, and autumnal foliage galore adorned the majestic building, making it look like something out of a fairy tale, and the inside was even more well adorned.
“Lumine, Paimon, it’s so good to see you again!” Jean greeted them warmly, “and Happy Halloween to all of you, including your friend!”
“I’m Nahida, just visiting from Sumeru for the festivities. Thank you so much for having me!”
“We’re glad to have you, Nahida!” A bright voice came from behind Jean, and Amber joined the rest of the group, bouncing on her heels in excitement. “I’m Baron Bunny, I mean Amber!” She winked and touched the rabbit ears and goggles on her head before holding out her hand, “if you’d like, I can show you around?”
“Oooh yes please Amber, you’ll know where Paimon can get all the best snacks, right?”
“Leave it to me!”
True to her word, Amber brought them to every station in the common area, making sure they had their fill of pumpkin shaped Moon Pies, moon shaped pumpkin pies, and enough candy to keep Paimon awake for a week.
Once they sat down, Nahida spoke up first, “Klee, do you have a favorite snack?”
“I really like fish, but there’s none here.” She pouted briefly and examined her plate, her face quickly lighting up with a smile, “Moon Pie! Miss Eula is the best and she makes the best Moon Pies, and she made a bunch for Halloween, you hafta try them!”
Nahida took a bite and chewed thoughtfully, “a flaky crust, plus a smoky, savory filling, laced with warm spices,” she swallowed, beaming, “this is wonderful, thank you Klee!”
“Welcome!” The young girl kicked her feet and giggled before starting on her own Moon Pie, a contented silence falling over the table as everyone enjoyed their food.
Throughout the meal, Nahida would ask questions, taking in responses with an earnest expression before moving on to the next topic. The busy night and delicious Moon Pies got the better of Klee, and soon she was resting her head on her forearms, nearly asleep at the table.
“It appears Halloween is over for our little Spark Knight,” Kaeya murmured and gently picked her up. He touched a finger to the brim of his hat, and everyone offered small waves and whispered salutations in reply before the cavalry captain headed upstairs to the living quarters.
“You had so many firsts tonight Nahida, what did you think?” Lumine gave her a hopeful smile.
“Lumine, Paimon, thank you for inviting me, this was such a fun evening!” Eyes shining, she continued, “it would have been enough to spend tonight with both of you, but being able to meet so many new people, along with having so many new experiences, I couldn’t ask for more!”
“Nahida,” Paimon spoke softly, stellar eyes shining, “we’re so glad you could come!”
Lumine nodded in agreement, “there’s so much to see in the world, you’re welcome to join us any time.”
“Yup, that’s true! Paimon can’t wait to show you all the tasty snacks Teyvat has to offer!”
“The value of real world experience is incalculable, and I would like to spend some more time here. Thank you both for the kind words and offer.”  She let out an unexpected yawn, “but I’m afraid I may need to retire for the night as well.”
They gathered their things and made their way towards the door, collecting a group of people as they walked, including Jean, Amber, and Kaeya. Everyone was waving and offering treats, and Lumine could tell Nahida was getting overwhelmed, so she took her hand to help guide her.
Nahida turned to her new friends, “thank you everyone, and Happy Halloween!” And with one last wave, they headed out the door.

Study Buddies
A fic for Ayaka's birthday, it's a little late but I hope you like it!
Rating: Gen
Pairing: Ayaka/Lumine
Summary: The only thing that makes the stress of finals bearable is a hot drink and a new crush. Right?
Thoma sat up, his attention pulled towards the chiming door to Nights of Javonius, “Lumine!” He waved her over and then immediately flopped back against the couch with an exaggerated sigh, “midterms are the worst. Why do we do this again?”
“Because we must.” Ayaka replied with a smile, but found herself floundering for something to say when Lumine finally joined them. Her heart swelled with gratitude when Thoma literally jumped into the empty silence, getting up and gesturing for Lumine to take his spot on the couch.
“Hey! Have you ordered yet?” When she shook her head he gestured at the couch again, “please, I insist. Besides, I think Ayaka and I both need a refill and maybe a snack. What would you like Lu? It’s my treat of course.”
“Thanks Thoma. I guess I’ll have a cinnamon oat milk cold brew and a pumpkin muffin?”
“Sure!” He gave her a thumbs up and headed towards the counter. Lumine busied herself with getting her ancient laptop plugged in, propping it up on the table so that it would actually take a charge.
“How were-”
“What did-”
Both women looked at each other and laughed. The moment felt so warm and genuine to Ayaka her stomach was doing flip flops. She prayed to any archon listening that she could maintain her composure while working on their project. Being around Lumine kept her feeling giddy and taut, stretched thin over feelings she didn’t have the courage to name. At least for now, she could fall back on the muscle memory of years of practiced niceties.
She nodded to Lumine, “go ahead.”
“I was just going to ask how you managed to snag the ‘comfy corner,’ especially during midterms.”
“Thoma has pretty much been here all day studying, so he secured the couch as soon as he could. How were your classes today?”
“Exhausting, I cannot wait for midterms to be over.” Lumine dug into her bag, “I’m so glad Thoma offered to pick up the coffee and snacks. I don’t get paid for a couple more days, but I’m good for it.”
“Please don’t worry about it, either one of us would be happy to cover you.” Ayaka gave Lumine what she hoped was a reassuring smile, but she wasn’t sure how to read Lumine’s reaction.
“Are you sure?” At Ayaka’s nod she continued, “that’s nice of you, thanks. You’re lucky to have a guy like him.”
Ayaka wanted to laugh, but knew it was better to set the record straight. “Well, my parents adopted him when he was young, so we grew up together. But I am very lucky. He’s like my brother, but also my best friend.” She looked down at her lap, twisting the hem of her navy blue sweater in her hands.
“So you aren’t dating?”
“No, we do live together,” Ayaka paused, trying to find the right words, disappointment roiling in her stomach, “however it’s not like that. But if you’re interested, he’s not currently seeing anyone now.” She couldn’t avoid sounding quiet and withdrawn, as much as she wanted to ignore it.
“Oh no, Thoma is a sweet guy, and I think we could be good friends, but he’s not my type.”
Her reply hung heavy in the small space between them, but before either one of them could say anything else, Lumine’s laptop made a chirping noise.
“Oh Barbatos, what is wrong now!?” She yanked the laptop off the side table and began to type and click away, trying to fix things.
“Lumine, I can’t believe you’re still using that ancient hunk of plastic. Why don’t you upgrade?” Thoma carefully placed three plates on the table in front of the couch before pulling an iced coffee from the crook of his arm. He handed it to Lumine and sat down to take a monstrous bite of his bagel.
“Ugh I wish I could, but I’m just not flush enough for that kind of purchase. Thanks for the coffee and food.”
Thoma quickly chewed and swallowed, “don’t worry about it! We can’t work on empty stomachs.”
“It certainly wouldn’t help, right?” The barista Amber chimed in as she carefully held two steaming drinks, placing them on the coffee table and stepping back with a flourish. “One flat white with whole milk and one salted honey chestnut latte.” She pulled a fork from her apron pocket, “and this is for your apple cake Ayaka.”
The group offered their thanks and briefly caught up with Amber before she headed back behind the counter.
“Okay ladies, are you ready to crush this group project?” Thoma gave them a rakish grin.
“Yes, let’s do our best!”
“Yeah!”
- - -
Lumine nearly tripped as a snowy gust pushed the door shut behind her. She stomped her feet to get the snow out of her boot soles as best she could but given the general state of the floor, it felt like a lost cause.
“Hey Lumine!” Amber waved from behind the counter. She waved back and wrestled off her heavy jacket before she overheated. The weather had decided to conspire against everyone, giving the students a surprise cold snap and snow storm in the midst of finals.
“Amber. What is going on with this weather?!”
The barista grinned at her, “Archons, I know! It’s like they’re punishing us, as if finals aren’t bad enough. What’ll be?”
“Can I get a cinnamon latte and an all–nighter special?”
“You and your girl are gonna be working hard huh?” She winked and passed the cup to the barista before dropping the tokens in Lumine’s hand.
“She’s not-it’s, we’re just in classes together! And friends!” She ran her thumb over the coins in her hand and tried not to think about the alternative. “So I can study here all night and I get three basic drinks and a pastry right? Does the drink have to be the same every time?”
“Nope, as long as it’s not a specialty drink you’re good. And remember the rules, no horseplay and no sleeping.”
“Right. Well I wasn’t planning on the first and I think the coffee will help with the second. Thanks Ambs!”
“Good luck!”
Lumine sat across from Ayaka, dropping her things on the chair next to her. “Hey, how’s studying going?”
“Lumine! Hi!” Ayaka smiled up at her and there was something so sweet and endearing about her expression, Lumine couldn’t help but smile back. “Studying is going as well as could be expected, but I think it will be a long night. Not that we could go anywhere in this weather.” Her expression darkened, giving the windows a worried glance.
“I mean, it’s a good night to stay in, so that’s something.”
“You’re right. We’ll be fine. Now let’s get to work!”
A productive silence fell over their table as they each got to work, but a shuffling in the corner caught Lumine’s attention.
“Hey, Ayaka, the couch is empty, let’s claim it before someone else does!” She grabbed her bag and jacket and casually sauntered over, sitting on the still warm cushions before someone else got the same idea.
Ayaka soon joined her and they eventually managed to take over the couch and table in front of it with their things. Lumine left to pick up a spiced coffee for herself and jasmine tea for Ayaka, fixing them at the end of the bar before returning to her friend.
“Honey and almond milk for the lady, and an obscene amount of milk and sugar for me.”
“It must be cold if you’re drinking hot coffee for a change.” Ayaka blew on her drink and then took a sip, “it’s perfect, thank you Lumine.”
Lumine blushed at the praise but quickly changed the subject, “we’ll see about the hot coffee since it’s starting to get pretty warm in here.”
A few minutes later, Lumine realized that the hot coffee had in fact been a mistake. At first, she tried to just unzip her hoodie, but she could still feel the heat creeping up the back of her neck and finally just yanked it off, leaving her in yoga pants and a strappy tank top.
“Oh, um, are you, won’t you be cold?” Ayaka seemed to be flushed from the heat as well, looking back out the window instead of at her companion.
“Nah, this is much better. Once I overheat this is the only way I can cool off, I’ll be fine in a bit. Do you want to start reviewing for our final?”
“Yes, did you get the outline I sent you?” Ayaka pulled out her laptop and set it in front of them. Lumine pulled her notebook out and they fell into a steady rhythm of question and answer, review, discuss, and repeat.
It was past midnight when they wrapped up, with a productive but anxious hush having fallen over the coffeehouse. Lumine put her notebook away and pulled out her laptop, knowing she couldn’t put off finishing her term paper any longer.
Ayaka handed Lumine her coffee and sat down. Lumine’s stomach rumbled at the spicy aroma of Ayaka’s tea, “is that chai? It smells so good.” She took a sip of her coffee, exactly as sweet as she liked, “this is great, thanks Ayaka.”
“You’re welcome. Are you hungry? I still have a pastry token if you’d like it.”
Lumine shook her head, “I’m okay. I have a protein bar if I need something for now. I’m saving my pastry for when I need it, which is usually around 3am.” She laughed but it was cut off when her laptop screen flashed at her. “No, no, not now, please Paimon, get it together!” She frantically tapped at the keys while trying to adjust the charger.
A few minutes later she had her head in her hands. She asked around the coffeehouse, and not even the tech savviest of customers could revive her dead computer. While all her work was saved online, she had no way to access it, and her paper was due in eight hours. Rubbing her face she went to the entrance and cracked open the door, using the snowy air to try and calm herself down.
She knew her professor wouldn’t allow for an extension so close to the due date and she was running through any number of scenarios to try and figure out a solution. She flopped back down on the sofa, an anxious pit in her stomach.
“Here.” Ayaka handed her a laptop in considerably better condition than her own. “Use mine.”
Lumine could have cried, feeling relief wash over her. “Are you sure, don’t you need it?”
“I have my tab-” she was cut off as Lumine gripped her in a tight hug, letting go just as quickly.
“Archons, thank you! This paper is such a huge chunk of my grade and I’ve been struggling so hard with the topic.” She laid back against the sofa with her eyes closed, trying to calm herself down enough to focus on her work.
“I’m glad I could help. Let me just set you up.”
Lumine watched Ayaka through half open eyes. She was focused on her screen, her lower lip just barely caught in her teeth. Underneath the warring anxiety and relief, she felt a glimmer of something else, but she did her best to push it down and ignore it. She tipped her head back against the couch and took a deep breath before turning to face her.
“You should be ready to go, I’ve got you set up with a separate OS login and Waypoint is already downloaded, so you should be able to access your own browser account without any trouble.” She handed Lumine her laptop with a hopeful smile.
“You are amazing and I owe you my life. Or at least my grade in this class.”
“Please, I’m always happy to help a friend, and you were so distressed, it’s the least I could do.”
The very late night hush of the coffeehouse fell over them. Ayaka was alternating between her tablet, notebook, and textbook, while Lumine typed as quickly as she could to make up for lost time.
Lumine was pulled out of her term paper fugue state by a warm weight leaning against her. She nearly jumped out of her skin until she realized it was Ayaka, fast asleep on her shoulder. The rules of the coffeehouse were clear in her mind, and she knew Ayaka needed to wake up or they were going to get kicked out.
It was hard to push the issue though, especially when she tried to move and that only made Ayaka snuggle up to her. She was so soft, and Lumine wasn’t sure if it was just her shampoo, or her perfume, but she even smelled pretty. It couldn’t be helped though, especially when Eula tapped her on the arm. Lumine shrank back, knowing how stern the blue-haired barista could be, but relaxed when she saw her surprisingly gentle expression.
“Hey kid, she’s gotta wake up. We’re not kicking anyone out with the snow coming down like this, but we can’t have anyone sleeping either.” She shrugged on her coat and grabbed the shovel leaning against the wall. “Go grab a couple of coffees.” She leaned in so only Lumine could hear, “keep your tokens, but tell Amber I took them.” She winked and headed outside.
Lumine carefully shifted Ayaka away from her, making sure she didn’t fall too hard, and went up to the counter.
“Hey Ambs, do you have any more Stormbearer blend? And maybe a,” she squinted at the list of teas, “um, the Thunder Sakura Matcha? Eula grabbed my tokens when she went outside.”
“Mmhmm. I’m sure she did.” She gave Lumine a knowing smile, but didn’t press the issue. She slid the cups across the counter along with a small paper bag. “Just a couple extra pastries that we would have probably just thrown out anyway. Enjoy!”
Ayaka was still asleep when she got back to the couch. Lumine placed her tea on the table next to her and gently shook her shoulder. Ayaka woke up slowly at first, sleepy and sweet, murmuring Lumine’s name before sitting up, her eyes wide with panic.
“I fell asleep! I shut my eyes for only a moment, it just-are we getting kicked out? Is it already morning?”
“It’s still snowing and it’s not morning, so they’re being a little forgiving. Here, I brought you some tea and we got some free pastries. I didn’t put any milk or sugar in it, I thought you might want something a little bracing right now.”
Lumine felt revived by the snack break, and managed to push through the conclusion just as the sky began to lighten, arms shooting above her head when she wrapped up the last edits. “Finally! Done!”
“That’s wonderful!” Ayaka took back her laptop with a smile and slid it back into her bag. “You never told me, what’s it about?
“The title is ‘Immovable Mountains, Intangible Forms: Gender and the Divine in Rex Incognito,’ I studied a lot of Liyue literature when I was in school at the university there.”
“That sounds fascinating, you’ll have to let me read it sometime!”
Lumine felt self conscious but agreed, and they both returned to wrapping up their work and getting ready to leave as the coffeehouse and the campus began to wake up. They walked carefully to the corner where their paths home diverged, and stood off to the side, waiting.
“Well, I’d better head to my apartment,” Ayaka turned to cross the street, her hand barely brushing Lumine’s, shocking her to action.
“Wait-” she grabbed Ayaka’s hand, pulling her down a side street. “I just, can I, um,” breathing deep, she tried again, “can I buy you a pizza or dinner or something not at the coffeehouse? You saved my grade tonight, it’s the least I can do.”
Cold-pinked cheeks flushed pinker, and it took Ayaka a moment to respond. “Is that the only reason?”
The intent was clear as the post snowstorm sky above them, a crisp blue with only a few wisps of clouds barely blushed from the sunrise. The golden pink glow felt a little like the hope knotted tight in her stomach when Lumine replied, “do you want it to be?”
Before either one of them could say anything else, the clock tower chimed, pulling them back to reality. Fidgeting, anxious, Ayaka looked around, “no, I don’t.” And surprised both of them by kissing Lumine on the cheek before quickly crossing the street before the signal changed.
Lumine watched her leave, a flustered apology thrown over her shoulder as she left.
“That makes two of us.”

Darkest Before Dawn
Rating: Teen
Pairing: Childe/Lumine
Summary: How do you keep the darkness away when it possesses you while you sleep?
Childe has night terrors. A farewell gift from the Abyss, he usually picks something up from Bubu Pharmacy to knock him out into a dreamless sleep, but he doesn’t always have it with him when he visits Lumine in the Serenitea Pot. The first time he woke up, drenched in sweat and screaming, Lumine was so startled she materialized her sword and nearly took his head off.
But as soon as she saw the dazed look in his eyes, she knew what was happening. She sat up and stretched, careful not to touch him right away. But eventually she moved closer, letting her arm touch his, then their fingertips brushing against each other. Finally she took his hand, slowly rubbing her thumb over his knuckles, each point of contact slowly bringing Childe back to her.
When Childe finally woke up, it still took a few minutes for the shock and confusion to wear off. But as the dark fog dispersed in his mind, he took stock of his situation and came to realize what had happened. He dragged his hands over his face, trying to temper his mortification, wondering how he was going to explain this to Lumine.
By the time he noticed she was gone, Lumine was already back in the bedroom, the silk robe he brought her the day before slipping down her shoulder. She handed him a cool washcloth and put a glass of water on the nightstand next to him. He wiped his face and neck, feeling the mattress shift as she joined him in bed. He sighed, trying and failing to find the right words to explain what had happened.
Before he could make another attempt, she nudged him with her knee. "Hey.” Another nudge, “don't worry about it." He opened his mouth to protest and she just shook her head. "You don't have to say anything if you don’t want to." She laughed, "Honestly, Paimon's snoring is even louder sometimes."
She carefully laced her fingers between his own, "you don't even need to talk about it. But," she chewed her bottom lip, considering her words carefully. "I'm here if you need me, whatever it is." He felt a pang of tenderness, blaming it on his emotional state. But deep down? He knew better.
For now, for tonight, he would ignore his own better judgment and let that tenderness keep its hold on him. He curled up next to Lumine and laid his head in her lap. He couldn't lie, close contact with her was always guaranteed to improve his mood, whether it was a rousing sparring session or something soft and quiet like this.
But it was the way she ran her fingers through his hair that had his heartbeat dropping. And with each exhale his eyes closed just a little more, until the only sound was the deep, even breaths of both of them, tangled up together and fast asleep.

And If You Kiss Somebody, Then Both of You'll Get Practice
Rating: Teen
Pairing: Ayaka/Yoimiya
Summary: A friendly game of Spin the Bottle leaves our two lovely ladies spinning, overwhelmed with their feelings for each other until they can't help but confront them.
“Ayaka’s up next!” Lumine turned and handed her the bottle. “Are you okay with this?” Everyone else was busy chatting while they waited, allowing Yoimiya to observe the conversation across from her.
Lumine leaned in close to whisper something, but Ayaka took a deep, shaky breath and grabbed the bottle with a determined expression on her face. Yoimiya was happy to see her taking a chance.
“Thank you Lumi, it’s okay. It will be fun, right?”
“Right.”
One of their new friends from the Irodori Festival, Venti, had suggested the game. And since everyone was still in town, it seemed like a fun, if slightly scandalous way to pass an evening. Lumine had given Venti a very sharp look when he suggested it, but after everyone was sworn to secrecy, they agreed to play.
Calx had gone first, getting General Gorou. He blushed furiously but honored the rules of the game, blushing redder still after the artist’s lips grazed his own. Sangonomiya-sama was just as red, watching the whole thing unfold with wide eyes.
Venti had been next, getting none other than Lumine. He gave her a sly smile and leaned in, kissing her on the cheek in a way that was so tender, it was almost too much to watch. Normally quite composed, Lumine was blushing as she sat back down, hiding her fluster behind a sip of dandelion wine.
Finally it was Ayaka’s turn. She leaned forward and gave the bottle a sharp spin before kneeling, her posture perfectly tense. After an eternity, it began to slow until it landed back on Ayaka.
“Go again! Go again!” Zhenyu chanted.
“No, if it lands on the person who spun it, you just use the other end to choose, which means…” Venti pointed first to the bottle and then followed the imaginary line to the person sitting across from Ayaka.
“Hey, that’s me!” Yoimiya giggled. “If that’s okay with Ayaka of course, but I don’t mind!” She could feel a little flutter of hope in her heart, but she tried her best to tamp it down. This was supposed to be fun, there’s no sense in letting her feelings get the better of her.
“Th-that’s the rules right?” Ayaka looked at Venti and he simply smiled and took a sip of wine.
Yoimiya got up and brushed her hands on the sides of her thighs before holding one out to Ayaka. “C’mere.”
She helped Ayaka to her feet. Her nervousness was plain as day, between her light blue eyes darting back and forth, and the sakura pink dusting her cheeks. It hurt Yoimiya to see her so anxious, so she improvised.
“My lady,” she bowed deeply, holding Ayaka’s hand up so she could press her lips to the bare skin of her fingers, just below the edge of her gloves. She looked up as she did, and seeing the gratitude in Ayaka’s expression, she knew she made the right call. Yoimiya tried not to think about how soft her skin was, or stare at the way she bit her lower lip, wanting to feel the plush softness for herself.
Both women quickly sat back down. Yoimiya knew she did the right thing, but she couldn’t help feeling a little disappointed. Ayaka was still flustered in spite of the save and merely stared at her hands in her lap.
The game kept the night lively, but only resulted in a few more rounds. Eventually people started to lose interest, so Yoimiya stood up with a stretch. “We should probably call it a night, there’s so much to do at the festival tomorrow so we’ll need our sleep!”
She turned to ask Ayaka if she wanted company going home, but a new voice cut in.
“My lady!” Thoma stood next to Ayaka with an endearing smile, “how was your evening?”
“Thoma!” She blushed an even prettier shade of pink, her gaze resting on Yoimiya for just a moment before she turned back to him. “It was lovely, everyone had so much fun.”
“Wonderful! Shall we head back?” He held out his arm and she looped hers through, the conversation between them too low for Yoimiya to hear. She sighed softly and walked towards the docks to wait for the next boat back to Narukami Island.
- - -
With the whirlwind events at the end of the Irodori Festival, Yoimiya barely had time to think about what happened, and thanks to their festival duties, she and Ayaka barely crossed paths. Finally, a few weeks later, she spotted Thoma and Ayaka strolling through Hanamizaka. Yoimiya was excited, and moved towards them with her usual enthusiasm. She then realized Ayaka wouldn’t look at her, and her stomach sank.
Ever perceptive, Thoma glanced around, finally settling on the blacksmith’s stall. “My lady, didn’t you need to speak to Hajime?”
Ayaka nodded and quickly went to the stand. Once she had begun her conversation, he turned back to Yoimiya. “I have some festival matters to discuss with you, let’s walk to Nagonohara Fireworks together?”
“Yeah, I’m happy to help.” Yoimiya gave him a quizzical expression but followed him around to the side of the shop furthest from the street. “What’s going on?”
“I’m not sure.” He sighed and shoved his hands in his pockets. “Ever since the Irodori Festival, my lady has been distracted and forgetful. I was wondering if you knew what might be going on.”
She took a breath and then explained to Thoma what happened. Knowing he was already worried, she let him know right away that she took care of Ayaka. She made sure to conveniently leave off the detail where she wanted to kiss her so badly it hurt, the aching need filling her mind in every spare moment.
“I’m so glad!” He gave Yoimiya a quick hug, back to his usual, overgrown puppy self. “Archons, I was so worried ‘Miya!” A brief cloud of concern crossed his face. “Still though, I wonder what’s been troubling her. Hopefully she’ll feel better soon.” He gave Yoimiya an earnest look, “if she says anything to you, I don’t want to pry, but could you…”
Yoimiya wondered how she was going to ask Ayaka about her well-being if she wouldn’t even look at her, but that was a problem for another day. “Of course, if I hear anything you’ll be the first to know! But you should get back, she’s probably looking for you.”
“Oh jeez, you’re right. Well, thanks again ‘Miya!”
Thoma gave her a small wave before heading off. She could only hope in the meantime that whatever was troubling Ayaka would begin to ease, and their friendship could return.
- - -
Giving Pops the thumbs-up, Yoimiya walked along the beach at Amakane Island and up the hill. She was surprised to hear about this festival the Narukami Shrine and Yashiro Commission were holding, given that it was so soon after the Irodori Festival. Still, she was happy to help with any celebration.
Yoimiya waved to the vendors and festival-goers as she made her way up the hill. The night was warm, and the humid air held the scent of festival snacks and sakura blossoms. She absentmindedly reached out for a firefly as she walked, only to have it spin off into the branches above her.
The icy blue-white hair at the top of the steps caught her attention first, but it was Ayaka’s relaxed, almost wistful demeanor that had Yoimiya caught off guard. She hated to disturb her, but the fireworks were due to start soon anyway.
“Ayaka?”
She nearly fell back in surprise before turning back to look, “Yoimiya? Oh! You usually watch the fireworks from here don’t you? That was rude of me to sit here, I’m so sorry. Let me just-”
“Hey.” Yoimiya placed her hand on her shoulder and she froze, looking up at her with wide eyes. “I don’t own this spot. Stay. Besides,” she plopped down next to Ayaka, “it’s always nice to have company.”
Between the imminent fireworks, Ayaka’s tension, and her own heart, Yoimiya couldn’t stay silent for long.
“I’m sorry about what happened at the Irodori Festival.” She couldn’t bear to look at Ayaka
“What do you mean?”
“I figured you’ve been avoiding me because maybe you were uncomfortable.”
Ayaka fiddled with the ties on her belt. “The apology should be mine. You were very kind, and I’ve let my own feelings get in the way of things.” She let out a shaky sigh. “It’s silly, but I had this notion that I would finally have my first kiss. And when the bottle landed on you, I…”
Yoimiya looked at Ayaka, feeling anxious, hopeful, with that lingering dread of rejection lurking around the edges. She swallowed before replying, “what about me?”
Mortified, Ayaka waved her hands in front of her, “no, it’s nothing. Please, forget I said anything.” She moved to stand up.
“Ayaka.” Yoimiya took her hand. “Please?”
“I thought that you would be my first kiss. And I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since that night. I’m sorry!”
The ocean waves beneath them echoed the emotions rushing through Yoimiya, the steady thrum of possibility wearing down her hesitation like water over stone. “Ayaka, do you want me to kiss you?”
“I think-”
“Don’t think. Just tell me what you want.” Yoimiya kneeled next to her, quickly dimming the nearby lantern before gently tipping Ayaka’s chin in her direction as she leaned just a little closer. “Well?”
Soft and pleading, Ayaka replied, “yes.” Leaning one hand against the tree trunk behind them, she finally kissed her. It was everything she could have hoped for, with Ayaka’s lips as soft as they looked, sweet as Tricolor Dango.
In spite of her Vision and nickname, Ayaka was warm, melting underneath her as their lips connected again and again. Their tongues teasing, tracing their lips, learning the taste of each other, the shape and feeling of their own fitful desire.
Yoimiya pulled away, panting, a thrill in her heart seeing Ayaka look right at her, gaze no longer avoiding but instead fixed steady, light blue eyes sparkling. She grabbed Ayaka’s face and kissed her with all her might, nearly falling over as she did, only to have the first firework of the night burst in the sky as soon as their lips touched.
Startled, they fell apart once more, staring for only a brief moment before another firework went off, and Yoimiya began to giggle, with Ayaka quickly joining her until both women were laughing and kissing and holding onto each other as the sky filled with ephemeral light.
- - -
Yae sat on the seaside cliffs of Byakko Plain, watching the festival with a pleased smile. She smelled the scent of apples and wine on the wind even before her companion settled next to her.
“I’m surprised you remembered our wager.”
“Ehe, I believe I’m owed a bottle of sake, am I not?”
She sipped her own sake and let out a short laugh. “I think it is you who owes me a bottle of dandelion wine. Who do you think suggested this festival in the first place?”
“That may be true, but it was my game where they first made contact.”
They stared at each other briefly, but Yae spoke first. “Then perhaps we have both won.”
“An agreeable set of circumstances.” He took the sake from Yae as he handed over his own bottle. “I should make wagers like this more often.”
“Bold of you to assume you’d win so easily next time, or have you forgotten how clever foxes can be?”
“Guuji Yae, I am the embodiment of the changeable winds of freedom and the cleverest bard in Mondstadt.” Another set of fireworks filled the night sky and he sat down next to her. “I may not be opposed to another friendly bet, but perhaps that can wait for another day. Tonight, let us drink,” he nodded gratefully as she passed him his own sakazuki, “to old friends, and new love.”

Wishful Thinker
Rating: Teen
Pairing: Fischl/Eury, Eury/Nimrod (background), Bennett/Razor (background)
Summary:
i don't want to feel this way forever... a dead letter [text] marked return to sender..
A breakup text, brief comfort, and life moving on, as it does.
“Heya Fish.” Bennett only used his childhood nickname for her when she needed cheering up. His voice was gentle, and she could imagine the soft smile on his face.
She sniffled and rubbed at her eyes. “Hey.” She grabbed a tissue and rolled over.
“How’re you fee-” his face contorted into a deep yawn. Forest surveys forced him to get up at 4am and he was not an early riser. Fischl watched the waistband of his tattered cargo pants slowly dip down his hips, his shirt hem rising as he grabbed onto the top of her door jam to really stretch. “Feeling. Are you okay?”
She let out a shaky sigh, feeling the familiar sting behind her eyes. She grabbed another tissue, trying to think of a way to play it off, but it only overwhelmed her, and then the tears were flowing all over again.
“Aw no. M’sorry Amy.” He sat down next to her and pulled her into a tight hug. He smelled like pine needles and dirt, but also something that was just Bennett, and there were few things more comforting. She leaned against him, sobbing until she could calm down enough to speak.
“I-I-I just, how am I, what does that even mean I’m ‘too high maintenance?’” She wailed before burying her face in her hands.
Her...girlfriend? Exclusive friend with benefits? Whatever their relationship was, Eury hadn’t been replying to her texts for a few days. Fischl thought it was strange that Eury’s sleazy ex Nimrod had been liking her recent social media posts. Then this morning, she practically ran away from her across the quad and Fischl couldn’t just ignore it anymore.
All those nights she and Fischl had hung out, Eury barely keeping herself together after her breakup, seeking comfort from movies, pizza, and cheap, terrible wine. And then there was that night. An impromptu ice cream sundae party turned into cold, sticky kisses, with ice cream slowly melting into puddles on the counter as they found something sweeter in each other.
A few dates here and there, more evenings hanging out in the library on campus or just the living room, many turning into hushed nights, where the sheets tangled around them. She had started to really like Eury, she was sweet and so funny. But the replies to her texts had gotten more sporadic and then just stopped. Until today.
Eury💖
F: why are you avoiding me?
E: i don’t think we should see each other anymore
The silence had been bad, but the cold declaration via text was so much worse. She nearly dropped her phone, needing to read and re-read the reply as if she had imagined it the first time. Still numb, she sank to the floor, phone in hand.
❌❌Don’t Pick Up! (Eury)❌❌
F: why are you avoiding me?
E: i don’t think we should see each other anymore
F: if you’re going to be a coward and dump me by text, at least have the decency to tell me why
🐺Lupical🐺
F: just a heads up. eury dumped me. by text. so that’s how my morning is going
🎶”If I go, it's not impossible
(the time it takes, the time it takes to let go)
But possible is probably wrong
So let go”🎶
She dragged herself to her bedroom and flopped onto the bed, just in time. The numbness faded and the first swell of intense sadness hit her, and once the tears started she couldn’t get them to stop. And now she was crying all over again, but at least she wasn’t alone.
The mattress shifted on her other side and she could feel Razor wrap his arms around her. Both men held her in comforting silence, not even complaining when her nose ran all over their clothes. To be fair, Razor was still in his vet clinic scrubs and Bennet’s clothes were a mess to begin with. She took a deep breath, feeling calmer, and blew her nose.
“Benny, did you get forest muck on my bed?” Her voice was quiet, but she hoped it sounded like she was just teasing him.
“Ah, sorry!” He jumped up, lanky arms swinging wide, knocking over Fischl’s lamp and pulling her charging phone onto the floor. “Oh jeez!”
Razor stood up, a welcome counterbalance to his boyfriend’s frenetic clumsiness. In a single, easy movement, he righted the lamp and untangled Fischl’s phone, sliding it back on the bed next to her before grabbing Bennett by the shoulders.
“Come on.” He gently pushed him out the door.
“Hold on, hold on!” Bennett ducked under Razor’s arm and kneeled in front of Fischl. “Hey. Hey!” He held onto her face, directing her to look at him. “Did you know cecilia flowers are almost impossible to cultivate?” She gave him a confused look. “In nature, they’re tough, and only thrive on windy cliffs, but if you try to grow them, it’s really difficult! Sometimes the best things are tough and take more work, but it’s always worth it.” He stood up and kissed her forehead.
“You’re gonna make me cry! Again!” She was smiling all the same.
“Let’s go.”
“Yeah you’re right. But you should probably shower, you smell like wet dog!”
Razor sighed. “You smell like dirt.”
“Haha fair! Okay, okay, I’ll shower too.”
“Need help?”
“I think I’m-oh!” His response was muffled by Razor clarifying exactly what his help would entail.
She rolled her eyes at their affection. She could never begrudge them, but she wasn’t sure she had the emotional fortitude for it right now. Shutting her door, she thumbed through her playlists until she found something ambient and soft. All that crying exhausted her, and if she wanted to get through her shift later, she needed a nap.
- - -
“Amyyyyyyyy!” Hu Tao’s voice could be heard across the Hot Topic, even with the music blasting. She ran from behind the counter and jumped onto Fischl in a full body hug. “I heard about Eury, what the hell?”
🎶“And all I need to know
Is that I'm something you'll be missing”🎶
Fischl sighed. She knew she was going to have to talk about it eventually but she wasn’t sure was ready. Thankfully a customer chose that exact moment to ask for help and Hu Tao bounced off to see what they needed.
She dropped her bag and coat in the back room, clocked in and tugged her lanyard on. She headed out into the store, only to jump out of her skin when Kuki snuck up next to her.
“Hey. You okay?”
“Kuki, how are you so quiet?”
“Store’s loud. You’re distracted.”
“Point taken. I’m,” she thought about it for a moment, “I’m here. I’m fine.”
“Fair. Next week’s schedule is up in the back.” She noticed a girl with mint green hair struggling to get a Pokemon sweatshirt that was just a little too high for her. Reaching to grab the garment hook, she spoke more quietly, “I think Xinyan was looking for extra shifts if you needed a night off.”
“Thanks. I’ll ask her.”
In spite of Hu Tao’s nosiness, thanks to the usual Friday crowds, they barely had time to talk. Fischl took over the front of the store so Kuki could take her break. She turned from the display she was straightening up to greet the next customer and stopped.
The woman was glancing around, determined, but a little bit lost, an expression the employees had dubbed “looking for a giftcard.” Fischl tried to remember what to say, but between the black jeans and snug white t-shirt hugging the muscles in the woman’s arms, she was finding it hard to focus.
She ran her hand through her pale blue hair, somehow making the asymmetrical cut look even better. “Hey. I checked online and you all sell things with different Sanrio characters on them.” She smiled, “it’s not for me, but it’s my assistant’s birthday and she collects the ones with bunnies.”
Hu Tao breezed by, gently nudging Fischl. “I think we just got some new Sanrio stuff in, why don’t you show her, Amy.”
“Of course,” she blushed at the contact, breaking her out of her daze. “It’s over on this display, follow me.”
“Thanks, lead the way Amy.” Hearing her name made her blush harder, and she prayed that the moody store lighting hid it. They stopped at the Sanrio products and she pulled out a few My Melody and Kuromi pieces.
“Do you know which one she likes more?”
The woman regarded both characters with the utmost seriousness. “Well, she’s got a figure of this one on her desk, she looks rather mischievous don’t you think?” She held up the Kuromi mug and grinned at Fischl.
“I suppose so. What about My Melody?” She held up shorts with the pink bunny on them. “She’s popular as well.”
“You know, for all that Amber, my assistant, likes Kuromi?” She looked to Fischl for confirmation, and continued when she nodded. “My Melody suits her more. Don’t you think she looks sweet and considerate?”
Hearing this woman talk about her assistant with that much kindness hit her in the most tender places. While she wasn’t surprised at how badly she wanted that for herself, she was surprised to find she wanted it from the woman standing in front of her. Anguish clawed at her stomach, and she took a deep breath, pushing down the heartache, refusing to acknowledge any feeling except the need to make it through the night in one piece.
“She does. I think that’s why they get paired together, it’s a fun contrast isn’t it?”
The woman regarded her for a moment, brows furrowed and something like concern in her eyes, but only nodded. “It is! You know, I think this mug is a good idea, you wouldn’t happen to have them as a matched set would you?”
Fischl scanned the display before dropping down to check the shelves. “I think we might have more down here. It’s nice that you’re being so thoughtful.”
“Well she’s the best assistant I’ve ever had. And I mean, I’m not just getting her the mugs, I just thought it would be good to have a fun gift to leave on her desk. There’s going to be lunch and cake and,” she crouched down next to Fischl and gave her a conspiratorial wink, “don’t tell her, but I’m going to give her the afternoon off.”
Fischl laughed in spite of her gloom, “your secret’s safe with me.”
“Thank goodness!”
“I think I see one back here, whoa!” Fischl lost her balance and fell forward slightly, only to have strong hands catch her. Both she and the blue-haired woman froze, staring at each other, neither of them quite sure what to do.
“You okay?”
“Y-yeah. I’m fine. Thanks, I’m sorry.”
“The apology is mine to give, I’m sorry for making you nearly hurt yourself for a mug. A very cute mug, but it’s only a mug all the same.” She stood up and held out her hand, helping Fischl to her feet.
“Thanks. Did you need help finding anything else?”
The woman considered her with an inscrutable smile on her face. “I think this will do it for tonight.”
They made their way to the register and Fischl began to ring her up. The woman’s thick, black credit card felt unusually weighty in her hand but she didn’t think much of it. She handed it back with her receipt and the bagged merchandise.
“Thanks for shopping at Hot Topic Miss Lawrence-”
“Only people who hate me call me Miss Lawrence. Call me Eula.”
“Eula.” There was a certain elegance to it, much nicer than ‘Amy.’ “Well, thanks for shopping with us Eula, have a good night!”
“You too, thanks for the help Amy.”
She gave a little wave over her shoulder as she left the store, and Fischl found herself leaning on the counter, breathless for absolutely no reason at all.

Simple Celebration
Rating: Teen
Pairing: Childe/Lumine
Summary: It's hard to keep track of your birthday when the calendar's not the same. Good thing Lumine's got friends to remember for her.
This work is absolutely inspired by Susu's lovely gift for Seelie. It's so cute and sweet! What better way to celebrate one of my fave creators than a bit of birthday comfort and care? 💖
Lumine woke up slowly, her eyes quickly adjusting to the wan pink light of her bedroom. She stretched only to find her bed otherwise empty except for the blankets bunched at her feet. That would explain the chill she felt.
A rhythmic scraping sound could barely be heard from the floor below her. Childe must have gotten up to make breakfast. Or at least, the sharp grumbling in her stomach had her hoping he was making breakfast. She dragged the blanket off the bed, wrapping herself up as she walked down the hallway to the head of the stairs in her teapot abode, pausing when she heard a chirp.
“Good morning to you too, Seelie.” The glowing pink orb gently nudged her shoulder. She laughed and rubbed the spot between their ears, smiling at the soft purrs they were emitting.
“Should we see what that madman is up to in the kitchen?” They let out an affirmative trill and floated behind Lumine as she slowly made her way down the stairs. With each step the smells and sounds intensified, but it turned into a joyful cacophony when she rounded the corner into the kitchen.
“Hmmm Paimon thinks the berries need more sugar.” The fairy helped herself, sprinkling more sugar over a glistening pile of golden berries.
“Hey, save some for the rest of the dishes unless you want to go buy more!” He grabbed a spoon and tested berry. “But that should be enough sugar. Since these are almost ready, can you bring me some plates?” Whipping a dishcloth over his shoulder, Childe turned back to the stove and carefully began flipping something sizzling away in the pan.
“Why don’t you go buy sugar, hmm?” The fairy floated over to the shelves and grabbed a few plates, floating back to Childe and placing them on the counter next to him.
“Are you planning to finish cooking all this food while I do?”
“Well, no. Paimon doesn’t know how.”
“Then leave the seasoning to-oh, good morning starlight!”
“Hi. What are you getting up to?” She could feel Seelie pushing her gently into the kitchen, “I’m going, I’m going!”
“I swear, they’re getting smarter and smarter every day, I’m surprised they didn’t wake you up too!”
“Mmn.” Lumine stood behind Childe, leaning against him and pressing her forehead against his back. “Woke up ‘cause I was cold. What’re you making?”
“These are syrniki, crispy little cheese pancakes that get served with fruit. I thought it would be a nice birthday treat.”
“Oh that’s nice. Whose birthday is it?” She tried to recall the calendar but it was too early. She trudged over to the other counter, finally seeing the steaming pot of coffee. She carefully poured herself a mug with a splash of milk before sitting down at the table.
“Paimon can’t believe you forgot your own birthday!”
Lumine nearly choked on her coffee. “Since when is it my birthday?”
“Don’t you remember, we talked about it weeks ago.” Childe slid a plate of steaming hot pancakes in front of her while Paimon floated over with the berries.
“I don’t remember but-” she yawned widely and pulled the blanket tighter around her shoulders, “but it’s a little early.”
“You said you didn’t know when your birthday fell on our calendar so I asked what happens around your birthday and you said it’s a warm transition season.” He shrugged, “I suggested it could be about now, and I thought you agreed.”
“Hmm.” Lumine took another sip of coffee. “I guess today is as good as any other day.” Out of the corner of her eye, she could see Paimon practically vibrating with excitement, trying to hold back from shoveling her whole plate of pancakes into her mouth. Lumine dolloped the berries onto her plate before sliding it over.
She took her first bite and hummed softly as she chewed. The syrniki were crisp and toasty on the outside and the inside was fluffy and creamy, with a little bit of tang from the cheese.
“Well?” Childe watched her intently, forgoing his own breakfast while he waited for her reaction.
Lumine had just swirled a piece through the tart-sweet berries and tried to talk around the rather large bite. “S’good.”
“Paimon thinks they were delicious!” She sighed and leaned back against her chair, putting her hands over her stomach.
Finally swallowing, Lumine spoke up, “these are delicious. Thank you for making them, but you didn’t have to go to all this trouble.” She couldn’t help the guilt twisting in her stomach. If it was her birthday it was Aether’s birthday. What was he doing today?
“Well, I’ve got dinner prepped and a bottle of firewater to go with it, and there’s just too much for one person. Besides, I can’t have my best comrade spending her birthday alone.” His voice softened, and a certain understanding hung in the air between them.
Lumine quickly rubbed at her eyes. “Thanks. Both of you.” Seelie let out a soft noise and rubbed against her leg. “You too, Seelie.” She smiled down at the glowing orb and gave them a quick pet. “So if you made breakfast and planned for dinner, what about the rest of the day?” She smiled and stretched her leg under the table, nudging him with her foot.
“It’s your day zorya, you tell me.” He smirked and directed his attention to his own plate, carefully eating while he waited.
Looking back and forth between her breakfast companions, Lumine was torn. On the one hand it’s clear Paimon and Childe actually worked together to plan this, and the thoughtfulness nearly overwhelmed her. And Paimon probably wanted to spend time with her. On the other hand, Childe just gave her an open invitation, and she wasn’t about to pass up an opportunity this good.
“Y’know there have been a lot of repairs around here I could use help with, especially from someone so capable and tall.” She returned Childe’s smirk with one of her own. “But I would hate to impose.”
“Really?! That’s what you want to do on your birthday, housework?!” Paimon screeched from the stove where she finally took it upon herself to grab more pancakes.
“Yeah, I mean, I keep putting it off, so I might as well get it done if I’ve got the time right?”
“That sounds so boring. Why not have some fun?”
“It would be fun not to have to worry about surprise cold showers, don’t you think?”
“Zat’s twoo!” Paimon replied around a mouthful of pancake before swallowing. “The water heater’s been weird for months.”
“I know it’s not the most fun though, so it’s okay if you don’t want to stick around Paimon.”
“You might be right. Y’know, Kiminami-san was asking for more recipes, maybe I can visit her!”
“That’s a great idea!” Childe stood up and started collecting plates. “Don’t feel like you have to rush back, it sounds like what you want to do is way more fun, and you know repairs like this can take a while.”
The fairy’s face wrinkled in a grimace, “yeah.” She looked in between the two of them, a spark of realization on her face. “The way you two fix things, I might um, visit Yoimiya too, and then maybe see what Thoma and Ayaka are up to.”
“If you can’t make it back for dinner, we’ll be sure to save you some varenyky. You helped with assembly after all.”
“That’s right, I did!” She floated in the air with her hands on her hips. “But it’s Lumine’s birthday, she can spend it how she likes and Paimon will be back to celebrate it some more!”
Lumine stood up and pulled the fairy into a tight hug. “Thank you for everything Paimon.” She whispered, hoping the break in her voice wasn’t too obvious, “I can’t wait to celebrate it some more with you when you come back.”
Paimon returned her hug, “yeah well, don’t let Mr. Moneybags eat all the dumplings, I really did help you know!”
Lumine let her go with a laugh. “You have my word.”
As soon as Paimon disappeared with a twinkle, Childe’s arms were tight around her waist. “Got you something.”
“Besides delicious food? You really didn’t have to.” She spun around in his arms to face him. “Or any of this, you could have just, I don’t know, bought me dinner?”
“I buy you dinner at least every Monday.”
“I’m a simple woman with simple tastes.”
He barked out a laugh. “You are ferocious and brilliant and beautiful. But not simple. And I wouldn’t have it any other way, zorya.” He pulled her into a tight hug, and she could just feel the warmth of a kiss on the top of her head.
“Let’s just celebrate for a change.”
They stood in the kitchen, the warm air enveloping them like a blanket. Before long, Lumine sighed and pulled away. “Okay. We’ll celebrate. But first, we’ll clean up.”
“Oh no, it’s your day, no cleaning up for you.” Childe wrapped her in the blanket and scooped her up without a second thought. Out of the kitchen, up the stairs, both of them laughing, he dropped her into the bed and quickly pulled his apron off before following.
Lumine felt herself getting more and more breathless as she watched him crawl over her, muscles cording in his forearms. He kept her caged in and gave her the softest kiss. “Whatever you want, whatever you need, just ask.”
“Hmmm I could get used to this.” She kissed him back, sighing as his tongue found hers, muscle memory betraying her desire as she wrapped her leg around his waist without even thinking.
He groaned and pulled himself away. “That kitchen won’t clean up itself. I’ll bring up some more coffee when I’m done?”
“That sounds nice.”
She sighed and cocooned herself in the blankets, a cozy, sleepy haze settling over her after the unexpected indulgence at breakfast. If she could do what she wanted, she could indulge in a little nap. The rest of the day would be there when she woke up, to do with as she pleased.

From a Distance
Pairing: Kiminami Anna/Kamisato Ayaka
Rating: General
Summary: Whether the distance is across the span of years, or simply the span of the Hanamizaka promenade, it’s enough space for emotions to flourish between two people.
“Ayaka darling, you’ll make me trip if you cling like that.” The colors of Hanamizaka were a blur as her mother swooped Ayaka up into her arms and hoisted her onto her hip.
“My little snowflake.” The corners of her deep blue eyes crinkled when she smiled, it always gave Ayaka a warm feeling in her tummy. “Shall I carry you to Kiminami Restaurant?”
“I can walk mama, s’okay.” Ayaka struggled to slide back down to the ground.
“Maybe I want to carry you.” Lean arms tightened around her. “And look, we’re already here! Good afternoon Kiminami-san!”
“Ah, Kamisato-san!” A white haired man hurried from behind the counter to greet Ayaka’s mother. Slippery as an unagi, Ayaka wiggled down to the ground and out of reach. Kamisato-san was nice, but he pinched Ayaka’s cheeks sometimes and she hated that.
Wandering into a partitioned section next to the restaurant, she jumped at the sound of another voice.
“What’re you doing?”
She whirled around to see a girl her age, brown pigtails sticking up high on top of her head. She was holding a stick that skewered three round objects.
“I’m hiding. What are those?” Ayaka pointed to the stick.
“These’re dango. Don’t you know what that is?”
Ayaka didn’t leave the Yashiro Commission compound much and only ever ate what servants brought to her, but they had never served anything that was so fun and brightly colored. Usually it was broiled fish and miso soup, or even worse, pickled vegetables and grilled meat.
“No. What’s dango?”
“Here, have one.” The little girl held out the stick, giving her the chance to take the soft pink ball.
“It’s squishy!” Ayaka smiled and took a bite. “Mmm, s’good!” She quickly finished the treat, licking the sticky bits of dough from her fingers.
“My grandpa makes the best dango! He’s gonna work for the shogun, didya know that?”
“S’that the man who pinches my cheeks sometimes? I don’t like that.” Ayaka frowned.
She sighed dramatically. “Yeah grandpa does that. What’s your name? I c’n tell him to stop!”
“I’m Ayaka.”
“I’m Anna! Let’s be friends okay?” She ran off giggling, “c’mon I wanna show you something!”
Ayaka took off behind her, her own laughter echoing in her ears.
Following behind her mother at a respectable distance, Ayaka’s gaze wandered. The blooming sakura blossoms gently fell across the streets of Hanamizaka, and the sight of it nearly overwhelmed her. She had stayed up late the night before, too engrossed in a romantic light novel to think about sleeping. Now all she wanted was to be swept off her feet while flower petals fell in her hair.
Realizing her mother had moved further ahead than expected, she rushed to catch up, nearly running into her while she discussed a recent order with Anemona-san. Catching herself just in time, she wandered over to Kiminami Restaurant.
“Kamisato-chan!” She looked up from her seat to see Anna in front of her, hesitant, but her brown eyes were sparkling all the same. “Where’ve you been?!”
“I’m sorry Kiminami-chan, I had lessons and training and I just-are those your grandpa’s dango?”
Anna giggled, “yeah, d’you want one?”
Ayaka pulled a white dango off of the skewer and popped it into her mouth. Her eyes lit up as she chewed. “Do you like them?” Anna’s voice was excited, nearly breathless, and Ayaka couldn’t help but notice her flushed cheeks were the same color as sakura dango.
“Mmm-hmm!” Ayaka swallowed quickly. “These are even better than I remember!”
Anna blushed fiercely, twisting her apron in her hands. “Well um, I actually made these.” She could feel herself getting warm from Ayaka’s praise.
“Really?” When Anna nodded, she looked around the stall, seeing only Anna’s father and mother. “Is your grandpa still working at the palace?”
“Yeah! I’ve been helping my parents around the restaurant since business has picked up. Dad says I’ve finally mastered Tricolor Dango so that’s going to be my responsibility!” She was practically glowing.
“Congratulations Kiminami-chan!” Ayaka moved to reach out, but hesitated. Would a handshake be appropriate? Her tutors had only gotten so far with her etiquette training, and even still there was hardly a lesson about how to congratulate a friend on their recent success, nevermind a friend who was as pretty and sweet as Anna. She distracted herself by perusing the food case, noticing the three Tricolor Dango skewers on display.
“They do look delicious, I’m so happy for you.” She smiled warmly.
“Thanks! And this is all that’s left for today, so I guess I didn’t do too bad!” She giggled and began wiping down the counter.
“Well, consider your first day a complete success then, as I believe another customer will be buying the remaining orders.”
“Oh? Who is it?” Anna looked around for a moment and smiled when Ayaka stood in front of the service window. “Kamisato-chan! You don’t have to do that!” She could feel herself blushing, wanting nothing more than to her face in her apron.
“I insist, after all I can share with my family.” Her face briefly clouded over with concern. “Father has been under a great deal of stress lately, perhaps this will cheer him up. But I also want to support you, Kiminami-chan.”
“Ayaka!” Her mother called her from across Hanamizaka.
Anna quickly wrapped up the dango and thrust the package into her hands. “Thank you Kamisato-chan.”
Ayaka hurried back to her mother, giddiness fluttering in her chest for the first time.
Anna felt her stomach clench when she saw a flash of ice blue hair on the promenade. She hadn’t seen Ayaka since before her parents died. The chatter in the neighborhood was that both Kamisato siblings threw themselves into their work after their mother’s funeral, attempting to bolster their clan from aunty naysayers.
Even Thoma seemed tired. He used to linger in the stalls while running errands, chatting amiably with each owner before moving onto the next, but now the shadows stood out under his eyes and there was a certain taut energy to his smile that hadn’t been there before.
The crowd passed by and suddenly there she was, deep in conversation with Thoma as they walked. She looked pale, thinner than Anna remembered, and no matter how much she smiled at Thoma it never reached her eyes.
Anna was already untying her apron when she stopped and looked across the restaurant. “Dad, I have-”
His eyes followed hers and he nodded. “Go. Take some food. I’ll watch things here.”
“Thank you!” Anna quickly packed up some food before running out the door.
“Ayaka!” Everyone stopped at the sound of her voice, including Ayaka and Thoma. Reflexes quick, he grabbed the containers from Anna, allowing her to throw her arms around Ayaka, forgetting their statuses, location, everything except the desperate need she had to comfort her friend. “I am so, so, sorry Ayaka.” She held her tight for just another moment before letting go.
“An-Kiminami-chan. Thank you.” She quickly blinked away the tears and took a deep breath, trying to continue.
Thoma came to her rescue, “is this for us Kiminami-chan, it smells delicious!”
“Yes! It’s not much but I hope you’ll like it. Some soba, skewers, and um, dango. I thought you might be hungry.”
“Your soba is so delicious and I bet even milady will have some dango. Thank you very much!” Thoma’s tone was excited, but his expression was more somber, and the gratitude in his eyes was unmistakable.
“Thank you Kiminami-chan. I’m-I have to-”
“You’re welcome.” Anna took her hand once more and squeezed it. “I have to get back but please, come by any time, we’d love to see you. That goes for you too, Thoma.”
“You better start preparing the soba now!” He laughed before leaning towards Ayaka, his voice softer, “come milady, the rest of the errands can wait until tomorrow. Let’s head home and have something to eat.”
Ayaka looked at Anna once more, “thank you again, Kiminami-chan, it’s very kind of you.”
“Of course Aya-I mean, Kamisato-chan. Please, take care.”
“Kiminami-chan!”
Anna looked up from her ledger. It was still early in the day, too early to start cooking, but she liked to open the stall to fresh air while she worked on the books. She tried to allow herself whatever small pleasures she could, even if it was hard to find the same joy in them.
“Kamisato-chan, what a pleasant surprise!” She was telling the truth. So often the Kamisato siblings sent others to pick up their food, she couldn’t remember the last time she had seen Ayaka. Whenever it was, it was just long enough that Anna felt like a flustered teenager looking into those light blue eyes.
“I’m sorry, you’re in the middle of something, I’ll leave you alone.”
“No, it’s fine I’m just getting ready for the day.”
“Oh. Well, I just wanted to say hello and see how you’re doing. I was, I’m sorry, your father-” she stopped and took a deep breath. “I was, am, so sorry about your father. I wish there was more we could have done, that we could have found him.”
Ayato had ordered the Shuumatsuban to work overtime, even assisting with the search for Anna’s father himself, but they had turned up nothing. The last time Ayaka has seen him look so frustrated and defeated was when their mother died.
“Thank you, that means a lot. It must be hard for you to think about.” She started to reach across the counter but thought better of it and dropped her hands in her lap.
“I’m okay. Is there anything you need, anything we can do?”
Anna sighed. “Between the Sakoku Decree and ronin, supplies have been difficult to manage, particularly produce, since that requires regular deliveries. But I understand that’s not the responsibility of the Yashiro Commission.”
Ayaka stood up, her posture sharp and stern. “No, but we are part of the Tri-Commission, servants to the Shogun and beholden to all of Inazuma.” Her expression softened. “Does a festival not require supplies? So too is this our jurisdiction. I cannot make promises, but I will see what we can do.”
The next morning, Anna nearly tripped over the produce crates waiting for her at the door of the restaurant. As if their presence wasn’t proof enough, the note tucked into the top written in a neat, delicate hand literally said the rest.
Kiminami-chan The Yashiro Commission has had the good fortune of facilitating the accessibility of certain trade routes. I hope you shall not want for supplies in the future, but if you need anything at all, please do not hesitate to contact me personally. Sincerely, Kamisato Ayaka
“Consider it a favor for the whole neighborhood.” Anna smiled at the blonde woman and her floating companion. “Look after her for us!”
Look after her for me. Please.
All three of them started at the sound of a small explosion. “What was that noise?”
“Um… When I was attempting to cook earlier on, did you… chat with the owner at all? Kamisato Ayaka: And did she, uh… say anything about me?”
Lumine and Paimon kept the conversation light, and they were so warm and friendly, Ayaka could have cried. She had been so nervous throughout the day, having been unfamiliar with such casual social interactions, but to then find out Anna had been talking to the traveler about her, it was almost too much to bear.
She couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed that she’d merely expressed happiness on Ayaka’s behalf and nothing more. However the fact that she thought of Ayaka so kindly to begin with gave her a spark of hope. And perhaps one day, just as her new friends advised, she can express her feelings, instead of keeping them locked up inside.
For now though, it was enough to know she has Anna’s friendship, and she would keep it like a precious treasure, safe and close to her heart.

Pairing: Noelle & Zhongli, Barbara/Noelle (implied), Zhongli & Venti
Summary: Zhongli visits Mondstadt, making a new friend in the process.
“Well if it isn’t my friend from the land of Liyue,” Venti strummed his lyre with a cheeky grin, “what brings you to Mondstadt from so far away?”
Zhongli let out a dry chuckle, “it is good to see you my friend. I believe you are going by the name Venti these days?”
His lyre disappeared with a wave of his hand. “I am, and for you?”
“Just Zhongli if you please. I believe you are acquainted with Lumine?” At Venti’s nod he continued. “She had asked me to accompany her on some of her travels. And since I find myself with a rather large surplus of spare time I decided to join her.”
“And so you’ve come to Mondstadt.”
“Indeed. Is it so strange?”
“I suppose not. Would you like a tour? Perhaps some lunch or maybe you’d like to try some of Mondstadt’s famous wines?”
“I have seen how much you drink, I am not sure wine is such a good idea this early in the day.”
“You’re no fun-oh!” The bard nearly took a tumble as he walked into someone.
“I’ve got you!” Noelle reached out for Barbara and Venti without a second thought, keeping both on their feet with ease. Venti seemed particularly delighted by the circumstances for some reason, while Zhongli was embarrassed over his friend’s lack of attention.
“Careless.” He grumbled at Venti before turning to the two young women. “I must apologize for the bard, are either of you hurt?”
“We’re quite alright, thank you.” Noelle gave a brief curtsy before turning to her friend.
“I’m okay thanks! Hello Venti, it’s been a while!” Barbara was a bit wary of the bard, but had a certain amount of professional respect for him from one musician to another.
Venti bowed and gave them his most charming smile. “My apologies to both you maidens fair, what brings you out into the sun and fresh air?”
“We were planning to get lunch at Good Hunter, but Noelle had to run some errands first.”
“Of course, ever the dutiful maid. But where are my manners?” He ignored Zhongli’s rather pointed cough. “Ladies, this is Zhongli, an old friend of mine from Liyue.” He laughed quickly at his own joke. “Zhongli, this is Barbara, the Deaconess of the Church of Favonius and the Idol of Mondstadt.”
“Idol?”
“She is perhaps the only Idol in all of Teyvat, which is to say she puts on performances where she sings and dances, and it’s wonderful! And here we have the hardest working woman in Mondstadt, Noelle! Currently an irreplaceable, well, maid hardly seems fair, but she is without a doubt, a future Knight of Favonius.”
Noelle blushed. “Thank you for saying so, Venti, but I’m simply doing my duty.”
Barbara stood with her hands on her hips. “No-ELLE we talked about this! You work hard and you deserve recognition for it!”
Noelle jumped at the sudden admonishment, while Venti laughed and the women continued talking. Zhongli waited on the side and took in the scene. His Gnosis had been gone for only a short time, but he still couldn’t resist the urge to stand back and observe people. Then Noelle turned her back to him, he caught a flash of rich gold.
She carried a Geo vision, in Monstadt of all places. Now he was intrigued.
Venti flitted around the women, light on his feet, stepping from one to the other as their spirited discussion continued. Just as the winds come from more than one direction, his attention can be in many places at once.
“Noelle my dear, your hard work is underappreciated, and a knighthood for you is overdue to be created.” Venti bowed to them both. “Now I do have a favor to ask of our darling Deaconess but only if it won’t cause you any stress. Could I trouble you for a bit? I won’t be long. I would love your feedback on an unfinished song.”
Barbara’s hand pressed against her chest, the surprise clear on her face. “M-me? You’d like help from me? But I’m no one-”
“Uh uh uh, none of that my dear, as I believe it was you who made it clear. Just as Noelle must accept the praise of an errant bard and friend, then so too should you. Your lyrics are divine, if I may say, and as of late my own haven’t held the same sway.” He winked at her.
“Noelle, would it be okay if I went with Venti for a bit?”
“Of course! I can get my errands done in no time and then perhaps we can get lunch?”
“It’s a deal!”
“If you would like, I would be glad to accompany you. It has been some time since I have been to the City of Freedom and I could do with a bit of a walk.”
“That would be lovely, thank you. Any friend of Venti’s is a friend of mine.” Noelle curtsied more formally this time.
Zhongli offered her his arm, “shall we begin?”
“As you wish!”
- - -
Their conversation started with the usual small talk, but after a short lull, Zhongli spoke up. “I’ve noticed you have a Geo Vision.”
“Yes. It was rather unexpected.”
“Oh?”
She knew it would hardly be appropriate or kind to disparage Geo Visions in the presence of someone from Liyue who also wielded a Geo Vision. And yet, while there was something about her companion that she couldn’t quite put her finger on, Noelle still felt like she could speak her heart, and trust him to listen without judgement.
“It’s just…Geo is the opposite of Anemo. And for a Knight of Favonius, it seems so out of place. I’ve been, well, I’m still not a Knight, however much I try. Perhaps it’s not meant to be.”
He could hear the disappointment in her voice, but he knew it was with herself, and not her Vision. “Monstadt is the City of Freedom, and more welcoming to outlanders than any of the other nations. Anemo is also the element of freedom, but the very nature of it is to bring change.”
“Change? I’m not sure I understand.” Noelle’s brow furrowed in concentration.
“Change is of course a mutable state just like the wind. And it could be said that the mere presence of steadyfast Geo energy is nothing if not a change in the face of constantly shifting and moving Anemo. The wind may continue to blow, but at some point, one must put their feet on the ground.”
Their discussion paused while they stopped at Mondstadt General Goods and a pattern soon presented itself. Blanche, Marjorie, Wagner and even Sara sought Noelle’s advice or guidance in some way, even though that wasn’t the nature of her visit, if she was visiting at all. As soon as Blanche had packaged her groceries, Sara waved Noelle over to try a recipe she was developing, Blanche and Marjorie needed product recommendations, and Wagner wanted Noelle to test the balance of a new claymore design.
The cool morning light had shifted into the brilliant sunshine of midday as the pair slowly made their way back to Good Hunter.
“Mr. Zhongli?”
“Just Zhongli is fine.”
“Zhongli, you mentioned earlier that the presence of Geo is a change, but what if it’s not a good change?” Her face clouded over with worry.
He let out a soft but not unkind laugh. “Over the course of this morning, I’ve seen how people value your input and contributions. You are a steady presence, and to have someone so reliable and true in your life is a gift.”
She blushed and looked down. “I hadn’t thought about it that way.”
“Perhaps it is because Liyue is the land of contracts, but I’ve always thought of a Vision as a kind of contract.” His voice had dropped slightly, and the kindly timbre had taken on a more serious edge. “Give and take is required, and for all the power a Vision  provides, so too must you accept the responsibility it has given you.”
He gave what he hoped was a reassuring smile. “All of that is to say, the fact that you have a Vision, and a Geo Vision no less, only further demonstrates your commitment to your goals and ideals. I have no doubt that you will make an excellent knight, or perhaps even a Grandmaster someday?”
Noelle giggled. “Now you’re just making fun.” But the gratitude was clear on her face.
Zhongli gave her an expression of utmost sincerity but Venti cut him off before he could reply.
“Nonsense, Zhongli is the least fun person I’ve ever met, at a party he’s like a blanket that’s gotten all wet.”
“I’m sure that’s not true!” Barbara chimed in from behind him. “Hello Zhongli and Noelle! Were you able to get your errands done?”
“Oh yes! Zhongli was quite helpful.” She gave him a genuine smile. “Thank you for the company and the conversation, would you both like to join us for lunch?”
“It was my pleasure, but I think we shall have to pass. Venti and I have a previous engagement.”
“Well, if you change your mind, you can find me at the Knights of Favonius headquarters, although I may be quite busy with my training and work.” She gave him a determined smile.
“I will miss your company, but I am sure we will cross paths again. Good day ladies.”
Venti watched them leave before turning to his companion. Before he could say anything Zhongli held up his hand. “Are you satisfied?”
“Whatever do you mean?”
“You are perhaps the least subtle being I have ever encountered.”
Venti chuckled, his expression shifting from an energetic bard to something older, more sly. “Fair enough. Gnosis or not, Barbara is so earnest in her prayers, the wind still carries them my way.”
“Interesting. I do still hear rumblings in the earth as well.”
“I’m surprised she has a Hydro Vision as the darling little Deaconess has a heart of pure gold, and prays for so many. It’s touching, if frustrating given how little I can do. But she’s prayed for Noelle more times than I can count.”
“I am not sure how much I can help with her becoming a knight.”
“She does pray for that, although to be fair, she would have much more luck if she simply talked to her sister, the Acting Grand Master.” Zhongli raised an eyebrow but nodded at him to continue. “But more often than not she prays for her friend to see her own worth.”
“She does not know who I really am.”
“I don’t think she needs to, whatever you said was enough, surely you could see that?”
“I believe so, but it does seem rather meddlesome for you.”
“Hardly. The wind may fill a ship’s sails, but it’s up to the captain to steer the ship to its destination, now about this previous engagement you mentioned?”
“I expected you would have too much to drink at lunch, setting a disgraceful example for those lovely women.” He continued walking. “If you must drink, I shall accompany you.”
“Ya-hoo! That means you’re paying right?”
“Ah, I seem to have misplaced my wallet.”

My Dinner With Ajax
Rating: Teen
Pairing: Childe/Lumine
Summary: The scene is set: a fancy restaurant, a first date. How will things turn out for our lovely couple?
Lumine fixed the thin shoulder strap of her dress before smoothing her hands over nonexistent wrinkles; the slip of the teal satin was a small comfort to her nerves.
She wasn’t new to dating, but it had been a while since she was this nervous. Ajax seemed nice, but as soon as she got to the restaurant, she worried she underdressed, worried he wouldn’t show, worried-
She looked up at the sound of the door opening and her heart skipped a beat. She could only hope that the soft lighting hid the warmth she felt creeping to her face.
“Ajax?”
He turned to her and his eyes went wide, his face lit up with a brilliant smile. He was dressed all in black, with the sleeves of his dress shirt impeccably rolled up to just below his elbows. Looking at his arms, she could see the strength and old scars from his years working as a chef, the muscle definition visible even through the fabric of his shirt.
“Lumine! I hope I didn’t keep you waiting!” He radiated boyish charm as he crossed the lobby, and before she could respond, his arms were around her. There was no mistaking his strength now, but he was surprisingly gentle, his voice a soft murmur in her ear.
“You look beautiful.”
He just as quickly let her go before holding out his arm. “Our table awaits.” She looped her arm over his, the skin to skin contact sending a fresh wave of heat to her face. They followed the maitre d' to a table near the kitchen and he pushed in her chair before taking his seat.
She raised her eyebrow at him. “Are you so friendly with the chef then?”
He laughed and gave her a sly smile. “I may have eaten here a time or two, especially when I was working on the opening.” He signaled to a passing waiter. “Piotr, could we start with a caviar platter and a bottle of champagne?” The waiter nodded and headed into the kitchen.
He leaned back in his chair, clearly at ease. “Dinner’s on me by the way.”
“Oh, are you sure? I can-”
He held up his hand. “I insist. When you said you’d never had Snezhnayan food I knew I had to treat you to the best.”
“Well, thank you.” She smiled brightly. “I haven’t been able to spend much time in Little Snezhnaya. When I’m in Liyue, my work takes me to the other side of town, but it’s all so lovely.”
His eyes never left hers as he replied. “I would have to agree with you, the sights are lovely indeed.”
She blushed and fiddled with her napkin. “What made you want to go into consulting work? I would have thought it’s exciting being a chef?”
He sighed. “It’s exciting but exhausting, and I missed seeing my family.”
She smiled warmly, “like Teucer?” She recalled his profile picture of the two standing together on a dock while Ajax held up a fish.
His face instantly lit up. “Yeah! Consulting hours are generally more reasonable, but I still get the thrill and excitement when each new restaurant opens.”
They were interrupted by the arrival of the large platter for the caviar and its accompaniments. A stand was set up with a small bottle of champagne submerged in a bucket of ice. Ajax waived the waiters off with a smile.
He grabbed the bottle, his fingers nimble as he twisted off the wire muzzle and carefully worked the cork, the muscles in his forearm flexing slightly. With the faintest pop the cork was out and he was slowly filling their flutes.
He tasted the champagne and smiled, handing her the other glass. “This will do nicely.”
She took a small sip and nodded, the bubbles dancing on her tongue. She didn’t know much about wine, but she could tell this was delicious.
“Now, allow me to show you how to eat caviar the right way.”
“Well I’ve never had it before, so I’ll take your word for it.”
“Well, it is quite a luxury, and it’s one of the best things Snezhnaya has to offer. Besides me, of course.”
“Are you such a prize catch?” Now it was her turn to give him a sly smile, and she was pleased to see she made him blush, just a little.
“I guess you’ll have to tell me.” Once again he caught her with those piercing blue eyes before getting back to their food.
He put a couple of what looked like pancakes on one of the small plates. “These are blini, little buckwheat pancakes. My mother likes to serve these with her homemade cherry varenye, which is delicious, but they are also excellent with caviar.”
He pointed to the small gold bowls with glistening piles of fish eggs. “There’s beluga and osstreta, plus the larger salmon roe, which is not technically caviar, but the salmon roe in Liyue is extraordinary. Some people like to mix them, but they have no manners.”
He picked up a small, gleaming spoon. “Notice the gold bowls and mother of pearl spoon, both of which are essential. If someone serves you caviar with anything else, you shouldn’t trust them and you definitely shouldn’t trust the caviar.”
“It’s that serious is it?” She gave him a wry grin. “So only very fancy bowls and spoons, nothing else?
“Well, almost anything else. Fingers are acceptable in the absence of anything better.” He dipped his finger in the beluga and held it out to her. “Care to give it a try?”
She licked her lips. “Is this, um, the right way?”
His voice dropped low, “having something unadulterated is the only way to understand how it really tastes.”
She looked him in the eyes and leaned in, carefully licking the caviar off of his finger. It was intense and rich, somehow both fishy, and not fishy at all, finishing with the cold brininess of the deep ocean. It was delicious.
She was so wrapped up in the experience she didn’t notice the pink flush creeping up Ajax’s face. He took a deep breath and busied himself setting them up, trying to think of something to distract him from thinking about the heat of her mouth, the delicate kitten lick against his finger.
He cleared his throat. “So, the blini are buckwheat pancakes-”
“Ajax?”
“Yes?”
“You already told me about the pancakes.” There was a teasing lilt to her voice, but her smile was so gentle, it was going to ruin him if she kept it up.
“Right. So for garnish there’s also sour cream, chopped hard boiled egg whites and yolks kept separate, minced red onion, lemon wedges, and chopped chives.”
“Could you make some for me?”
“Are you sure? What if you don’t like it?”
“I’ll like it. I trust you.”
Oh sweet Tsaritsa. He put together a plate for her and passed it across the table.
“It looks lovely, thank you chef.”
“You might be surprised to hear someone as attractive as me say this, but looks aren’t everything.” He winked at her and nervously waited as she finished her first blini.
Lumine swallowed and smiled at him. “That was perfect, thank you.”
He let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding and gestured to the platter, indicating she could help herself. She got creative with her blini construction, combining the caviar with different garnishes, her expression telling him whether or not her experiments were a success.
As they ate they discussed their lives, the work that they do, anything that came to mind. Lumine became particularly animated when talking about the non-profit work she did, and he couldn’t bear to look away, her passion clearly evident in the way she talked.
“Ajax my friend, it’s so good to see you!”
“Ilya!” The two men vigorously shook hands and began talking in Snezhnayan until Ajax switched over. “But where are my manners, Lumine, this is Ilya, the head chef of Winter’s Hearth. We’ve known each other for years.”
Ilya shook Lumine’s hand. “It’s so lovely to meet you my dear, you must be someone special for our dear Ajax to bring you here.” He winked and Lumine could see Ajax blush out of the corner of her eye.
“Well, this place is wonderful, we just had the caviar platter and it was exquisite.”
Ilya let out a low whistle and raised his eyebrows. Ajax was suddenly bashful and rubbing the back of his neck. “Now Ilya, I think if you’re going to take a lady out, she should be treated to the best.”
“Fair enough my friend. Have you ordered anything else?”
“We were just about to discuss it. What are you in the mood for zvezda moya?”
She missed the smirk on Ilya’s face. “This is all new to me, chef, what would you suggest?”
“You honor me with your trust my dear.” He bowed slightly. “Perhaps we can do a small tasting menu?”
“That sounds perfect.”
“Excellent! You won’t be disappointed.” The two men exchanged a few more words in Snezhnayan, before the chef said his final goodbyes and went back to the kitchen.
What followed was a slow but steady stream of excellent food. A small cup of earthy and savory borscht, light as air pelmeni floating in a clear broth, roasted fish with herbs and potatoes, a deconstructed chicken kiev, it was all new and delicious
Finally, they were served a dessert plate with honey 3 ways: warm pyranik served with sour cream and honey ice cream and a caramel sauce made with cinnamon and buckwheat honey.
Lumine’s eyes went wide.
“I seem to recall you have a bit of a sweet tooth.”
“Maybe…” She took her first bite and let out a small moan. Between the warm cookie, the cold, tangy ice cream, the spices and the slightly bitter note of the buckwheat honey, she was in Celestia.
“Did I not tell you they have an award winning pastry chef here?”
As much as she wanted to hold back the dessert was quickly finished. Ajax propped his chin in his hand and smiled at her.
“Good?”
Lumine ran her finger through a stray bit of caramel sauce but stopped before it reached her mouth. “I’d say so, but you tell me.”
He leaned over and ran his tongue over her finger, watching her golden eyes grow dark as he tasted cinnamon and honey. She shivered in spite of the heat of the nearby kitchen and slowly pulled her hand away.
“Delicious.”
They shared a car back to her place, watching the world go by in a blur of neon and light. Whispers and quiet laughter, shoulders touching, and suddenly hands finding each other and holding tight. The car came to a sudden stop, lit up by flashing yellow lights.
“I’ll have to turn around, there’s construction.”
A shared glance. “We can walk, it’s not far.”
The conversation dwindled into comfortable silence as they walked down the street, still hand in hand, until they reached their destination.
“This is me.”
“So it is.”
“Tonight was wonderful, thank you.” She stepped close enough to feel the heat of his body.
“It was my pleasure.” His voice was low and sweet as he pulled her close, leaning down until their lips barely brushed together. Lumine moved against him, sighing softly as they kissed, warm and soft, sweeter than dessert. Their tongues barely touched and Lumine sighed and pulled away.
“I should go, but I want to see you again.” She looked up at him, her eyes hopeful.
“Yeah. Yes! I’d really like that. To see you again, that is.” He tried to play it cool but truly didn’t have it in him.
“Good night Ajax.” She shut the door behind her and leaned against it, a giddiness bubbling up in her chest.
“Good night.” Smiling and flushed, he turned to walk home, the taste of honey on his lips.

It's a Promise
Rating: Teen
Pairing: Noelle/Barbara
Summary: Barbara was not pleased when she found out Noelle was planning on working on her birthday and decided to do something about it.
Noelle had just finished adjusting the last plate when she heard the soft bells that could only mean Barbara had finally made it to their weekly tea break. She had a busy morning, running around Mondstadt on various errands for the Knights, and had been looking forward to spending time with her friend. Although if she was honest with herself, she would realize she’d been looking forward to this tea break as soon as their last one had ended.
She turned to see Barbara’s bright smile and couldn’t help but smile in return. Barbara’s good cheer was infectious, and Noelle always managed to feel happier in her presence. That was just the effect she had on people as the Idol of Mondstadt.
Barbara greeted her with a hug, and Noelle relaxed into the warmth of her embrace. Barbara looked at the spread in delight, “This looks so good, did you make all of this yourself? I hope you didn’t go to too much trouble?”
Noelle couldn’t help but flush at the praise, “oh this wasn’t any trouble, I thought it might be nice to have a proper lunch together.” It really wasn’t much, some tea, simple salads, with spicy vinaigrette for Barbara, radish and veggie soup, and Mondstadt grilled fish.
“It looks scrumptious, thank you so much for doing this!” She squeezed Noelle’s hand before sitting down. “How has your week been, have the Knights been keeping you busy?”
“Well I suppose my days have been busy, what with all of the preparations for the Windblume Festival but it’s just part of being a good maid. It’s so important to the people of Mondstadt, I must make sure I do everything I can to make the festival a success.” She smiled and sipped some tea. “How have you been? You must have been busy as well getting ready for the festival?”
“Oh my goodness it has been non-stop over at the church! The sisters have been helping out of course but there’s just so much to do! Sister Rosaria hasn’t been around either, and while she can be so mean sometimes it would have been helpful to have the extra set of hands.”
They ate in silence for a few minutes. As soon as Barbara took a bite of her salad, her eyes lit up, and she did a full body wiggle in her seat. “Spicy!” Her cheeks were flushed and she smiled as she chewed. Noelle watched her, waiting for her to swallow.
“Did you make a spicy salad just for me?”
“Oh it’s a new recipe, I haven’t tried it before. Do you like it?”
“Like it? I love it! Salads can be so boring but it’s important to eat nutritious food and this makes it so much easier! This is delicious!” She continued to eat her salad, making small, happy noises as she did. Noelle smiled to herself, pleased that she could make her friend so happy with such a small change.
They continued their lunch, catching up on the minutiae of their weeks and discussing plans for the festival. Noelle gazed at Barbara, entranced at the way her eyes shone with excitement about the upcoming events, her cheeks still pink from the spicy food, and felt a fluttering in her stomach. What was that? She was just happy her friend was so happy. And she looked so pretty when she was excited, it was totally normal to think that, everyone thinks Barbara is pretty. There’s nothing more to it…
“Noelle? Are you there?” Barbara waved her hand in front of her face. “You don’t usually get lost in thought like that, is everything okay?”
“I’m fine, just thinking about the festival and I guess I got carried away.” That was an understatement. “I’m so sorry for not paying attention, what were you saying?”
Barbara gave her a look. “Please don’t apologize, you’re my friend and I want to make sure you’re okay.” She squeezed Noelle’s hand before continuing, not noticing the flush dusting her friend’s cheeks, or the way Noelle flexed her fingers when she pulled her hand away. “Well first I was saying how good this soup is, how you manage to make nutritious food taste so yummy is a mystery but I’m glad you do!” She grinned. “But I was also asking what you were doing for your birthday, since it’s during the festival, do you have something special planned?”
Noelle looked away. She didn’t like to make a fuss over her birthday since it nearly always fell during the Windblume Festival, she often found herself working with the Knights or volunteering at an event. “Well I didn’t have anything planned, I was just going to work that day I suppose.” She trailed off at the intense stare Barbara was giving her.
“That is unacceptable! It’s your birthday, you should do something nice that day, just for you!” She dramatically held up a finger in front of Noelle’s lips. “Nuh-uh, I will not be taking no for an answer. I am sure the big, strong Knights of Favonius can manage without you for one day. In fact, I’ll make sure they do.” She had a determined glint in her eye. “I’ll be stopping by Jean’s office on my way back to the church. So, what would you like to do for your birthday?” Between Barbara’s determination and winning smile, Noelle knew she literally couldn’t say no at this point.
“Well you see, I’ve always wanted to go on a picnic during the festival. It’s such a lovely time of year with all the flowers, and I thought it would be a nice way to spend some time with a friend. But I suppose that sounds silly.” She looked up to see Barbara giving her an exaggerated sad face.
She grasped Noelle’s hands with her own “Not at all! That sounds so wonderful and special of course you can have a picnic! Who would you like to go with, I can see if Amber and Lumine are available? And maybe even Albedo, Sucrose, and Bennett?”
“I don’t want to make a fuss, and they probably have other plans. I wouldn’t mind going with just one person, as long as they’re a good friend.” She looked down, her voice quiet. “Perhaps we could go together?”
Barbara squeezed her hands tight, her eyes shining. “I would love to have a birthday picnic with you! Name the place and time, and I’ll take care of it!”
- - -
Nervously fidgeting, Noelle looked around the edge of the bridge leading into Monstadt. She had never taken a day off like this so suddenly, but after lunch with Barbara, Jean had come to see her to personally approve the time off. She was so flustered, but she managed to thank Jean and promise to work extra hard the following days to make up for it. Jean smiled warmly at her and insisted she simply continue to do the outstanding work she’s known for, and remember to enjoy her birthday.
“Noelle! I’m here!” She turned to see Barbara walking towards her, smiling but struggling a bit while carrying a picnic basket.
Noelle jogged to meet her and grabbed the handle, “please allow me to carry it.” She easily took the basket with one hand, and gave Barbara a small smile. “If it’s okay with you that is.”
“Well I don’t want you to work on your birthday but it is a little heavy for me. You’re sure you don’t mind?”
“Of course not! It’s my honor as a maid to assist people in need.” She stopped as Barbara put her hands on her hips and gave her a stern glare.
“I don’t want to hear anything about being a maid today. It’s your day off, my goodness it’s your birthday! Let’s leave all of that behind the city walls, okay?”
“Well if you insist. I can’t really say no to you anyway.” She looked away, hoping she wasn’t blushing too noticeably.
Barbara giggled and flexed, her fist in the air, “well what I lack in physical strength I guess I make up for in willpower.” She smiled cheerily, and looked at Noelle as they walked towards Windrise. “Seriously though, I'm always so amazed by how strong you are! Like, flex your arm for me?” She looked at Noelle with big eyes, imploring her to play along. Noelle flexed her free arm and almost tripped as Barbara squealed in delight, her delicate hands gently squeezing her bicep. “Archons, you are SO strong, have you been working out even more than usual?”
Noelle kept her eyes down, partially out of humility and partially to make sure she didn’t actually trip. “I’ve just been keeping up with my routine. It’s important to me to be strong so that I can help and protect the people who are important to me.” She chose her words carefully so Barbara wouldn’t chastise her for talking about work again. “I do worry sometimes that it’s not seen as, well, ladylike to be so strong. But-” before she could say another word, she felt the press of Barbara’s finger against her lips, and her stomach fluttered at the touch.
“Not another word. I won’t have you speak poorly of yourself ever, but especially not on your birthday. Besides” she stopped, taking Noelle’s hand and squeezing it, “I like how strong you are.” The air shifted between them as Barbara continued to hold her hand. Suddenly Noelle’s throat felt dry and she swallowed hard, but before she could say anything Barbara pulled her along before letting go as she walked ahead. Noelle was glad she wasn’t looking at her, as she was sure her face must have been bright red. She took a few deep breaths before she caught up to Barbara, and side by side they walked to Windrise.
- - -
“It really is a perfect day for a picnic, this was such a good idea Noelle!” The sun was bright overhead, but in the shade it was just right, especially with the breeze carrying the scent of windwheel asters and spring. Barbara laid back on the picnic blanket, her arms and legs spread out, and let out a sigh. “I already feel more relaxed.”
Noelle smiled and sat down, her legs tucked to the side. “You know if you fall asleep we won’t be able to enjoy the food you brought.”
Barbara turned to her, giving her a sweet smile, “we can relax too. That’s part of the fun of a picnic you know. Come on, you can lay down for a few minutes and just take in your surroundings.” She patted the blanket next to her, and Noelle finally joined her. They laid there for a few minutes, the soft sounds of rushing water and wind in the leaves to fill the easy silence between them.
“Barbara?”
“Hmm?”
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“Insisting that I take the day off. This is already more than I could have hoped for.” She opened her eyes and turned to see Barbara overcome with emotion, her eyes shining and her hands to her mouth.
“Oh Noelle, I’m so glad. I wanted this day to be special for you.” She blinked a few times, and sat up. “But it won’t be special if we ignore this yummy food!” She opened the picnic basket and started taking out containers. “I can’t take credit for them, I’m still learning how to cook, but I picked these up at the Good Hunter, they were recommended by Sara so I know they’ll  be good!”
She winked and started pointing to different dishes. “These are a new item, a crispy potato shrimp platter, she said it would be a tasty start to the meal! Then of course a satisfying salad to share, I know that’s your favorite. Plus some chicken and mushroom skewers! Let’s dig in!”
She took a plate and added a little bit of everything to it before passing it to Noelle and then helping herself.
Noelle took a bit out of the crispy shrimp and let out a delighted noise. She turned to Barbara, holding her hand up to her mouth, “this is so delicious, you have to try it!” She took another bite, and swallowed before continuing. “I simply must ask Sara for the recipe.”
Barbara gave her a sly glance “Sara is notoriously stingy with her recipes. But if she made an exception for anyone I bet it would be you.”
“What are you talking about? I don’t think I’ve done anything to merit special treatment.”
“Well that barely wasn’t self deprecating so I’ll let it slide. But I see you talking to Sara about cooking all the time, I’m sure she’d be happy to hear your feedback. Plus how can anyone in Mondstadt say no to you? Everyone loves you!”
Before Noelle could respond she was distracted by a sudden noise. She looked in the direction it came from to see a group of hilichurls in the distance standing around someone crouched on the ground.
“Oh no! Someone needs assistance!” She dashed off before Barbara could say anything, claymore drawn. She charged into the group of hilichurls, and managed to fend them off quite well. But out of nowhere a Pyro hilichurl shooter appeared, and before she could activate her Breastplate shield, it managed to graze her shoulder with a flaming arrow.
“Noelle!” Barbara ran over, catalyst floating and ready, raining down Hydro at the shooter, a fierce look in her eyes.
Noelle planted her feet, “steady as stone!” A Geo shield appeared, protecting her beneath it’s golden glow. “Barbara, stay close to me!” Barbara nodded and moved until they were back to back, and called out “Let the show begin!” Noelle felt the weariness and pain begin to leave her with the gentle blue Hydro energy surrounding them.
“Are you okay?” Noelle could hear the concern in her voice.
“I’m fine, let’s take care of these monsters.”
“We can do this!”
And they did. Barbara incapacitated the Pyro shooter with an onslaught of Hydro, while Noelle made quick work of the other hilichurls. She kept the monster at bay, but as she paused to take a breath, the Pyro shooter took advantage and began to aim. Barbara froze.
“Oh no!”
Noelle had finished the last of her hilichurls when she heard Barbara cry out. Her heart caught in her chest and she ran towards her, “as a good knight should!” She took out the Pyro shooter in a blinding flash of Geo energy.
She turned to Barbara, eyes full of worry. “I’m so sorry, are you hurt, is there anything I can do?” She sheathed her claymore and put her hands on Barbara’s shoulders, looking her over for any injuries.
Barbara laughed gently and put her hand on Noelle’s arm. “I’m fine thanks to you.” Her eyes grew wide with reverence as she looked up to Noelle “you saved me.” She slowly rubbed her thumb over Noelle’s arm, the space between them feeling at once too close and not close enough. They locked eyes for a moment before Noelle cleared her throat and pulled away, “we should check on Allan and make sure he’s okay.”
Allan was sitting on the ground dazed, but uninjured. He profusely expressed his gratitude to both women, promising them he’ll be more careful and that if he ever needs anything while they’re in Springvale to just look for him. As he walked away, Barbara noticed Noelle’s small wince.
“Oh you were hit by an arrow, let me take a look!”
“It’s nothing, I’ll be fine.”
“I wasn’t asking. I am a healer Noelle. I may not be strong enough to protect you but I can still take care of you.” Her mouth set, her eyes steadfast and bright, she took Noelle by the hand on her uninjured side and brought her back to the blanket. She began to quickly undo the straps of Noelle’s pauldron, much to her surprise.
“What are you doing?” her voice was nervous, higher than usual.
“Don’t be silly, I help heal the knights all the time, I could take off someone’s armor in my sleep.” She realized the implications of what she said and turned bright red, “I mean, not that I would but I just, I know what I’m doing.” She carefully undid Noelle’s collar and her hands trembled as she started to slide the neckline down her shoulder. “I just need to move this out of the way to take a closer look, okay?”
“Oh well, yes, that’s okay. Just uh, take your time.” She couldn’t help the warm feeling in her stomach as Barbara pulled the fabric down her shoulder or the sharp gasp when she found the arrow injury. And in spite of the pain, she could feel goosebumps on her arms as Barbara’s fingers brushed her skin, their heads nearly touching.
“It looks like the arrow only nicked you, but it also managed to burn you. But the good news is I can take care of this and have you feeling better in no time!” She smiled and winked to hide the worry in her eyes. Her Vision glowed as she held her hands over the wound, and Noelle sighed softly at the relief, her skin cooling and healing under Barbara’s focused efforts.
A few minutes later, the skin was fresh and healed. Barbara pressed against the surrounding area a few times, asking Noelle to gauge the feeling, checking for any additional injury.
“I feel good as new Barbara, thank you.” She turned to look at her, Barbara’s hand on her shoulder, their heads still close together.
Barbara blushed, her usually energetic soft, “it was the least I could do. You had to rescue me.”
“Don’t be silly, it was my honor to come to your aid.”
“Of course it is, that’s your job.”
Noelle took her hand and held her gaze, her eyes soft “It was my honor as your friend. As someone who cares about you. I told you I want to protect the people I care about. That includes you.” Her face turned as red as the roses on her outfit and she could feel her stomach fluttering.
Barbara returned her blush, “as someone you care about?”
The air between them was suddenly charged again, as the adrenaline wore off and shifted into a different kind of excitement. Noelle could feel her heart beating faster, pounding in her ears as she looked at Barbara, noticing how soft her lips were. They were still so close together.
She leaned in, whispering as their lips touched “yes.” Softly, she kissed her friend and knew this is what she had wanted all along. Barbara made a startled noise and Noelle quickly pulled away, her eyes wide.
“I’m so sorry, I don’t know what came over me! That was terribly rude of me to take advantage of you like that.” She started to back away but didn’t make it far before Barbara grabbed her hand. “What-” she was cut off as Barbara returned the kiss, cupping her cheek with one hand, before pulling away and kissing her over and over. Startled but thrilled, Noelle clumsily, enthusiastically returned her affections. After a few minutes she pulled away and looked at Barbara, overjoyed to see the happiness in her eyes, her lips red and swollen.
“I don’t know what to say.” She took Barbara’s hands in her own. “I’m just so happy right now.”
Barbara’s whole face lit up “really?”
“Yes. I think I’ve felt this way for some time, but I didn’t want to make you uncomfortable so I tried to ignore it. But it’s been getting harder to ignore and now,” she squeezed Barbara’s hands, “I don’t have to.”
Barbara took her hand and gently kissed her palm, “no you don’t. And I don’t either. I think I fell for you the first day we met. Do you remember it?” Noelle nodded and she continued “I wasn’t a deaconess yet, I was still in training. And I had stopped by the Knights headquarters to visit Jean for lunch, but she was outside running training drills with everyone. It was usually so boring to watch but that’s when I saw you.” Her expression became wistful. “Most of the knights were using swords, but you were one of the few with claymores, and you looked so strong and determined, I couldn’t stop watching you.” She sighed, smiling.
“The way you moved was just so impressive, and you’re so pretty, it was hard to look away.” She turned bright red “I even thought about what it would be like to be held by you, with your strong arms wrapped around me.” She covered her face with her hands. “I can’t believe I just told you that!” She whined, still hiding her face, but peeked through her fingers at the sound of metal against metal. Noelle had already taken off both gauntlets and was in the process of removing her other pauldron.
“What are you-oh!” She let out a startled laugh as Noelle grabbed her by the waist, pulling her into her lap and holding her tight.
“Is it just like you imagined?” her voice was soft in Barbara’s ear.
“It’s better” Barbara nuzzled into her neck, planting a soft kiss where her neck and shoulder met.
“Oh!”
“I’m sorry, was that not okay? Are you still hurt?”
“No, it felt wonderful. It was just unexpected.” Barbara smiled and pushed her down on the blanket.
“Well there’s more where that came from.” She began kissing Noelle, softly at first but then with more intensity. She cautiously ran her tongue against Noelle’s bottom lip and the noise she made in response made heat pool in her stomach. She opened her mouth more and they slid their tongues together, and she moaned softly at the sensation and how good, how right, it felt to be doing this with her. She felt Noelle wrap her arms around her waist before rolling and pulling Barbara on top of her. She let out a delighted cry before leaning down and continuing, Noelle’s lips soft and yielding against hers.
After a few minutes of making out, Barbara stopped and pulled away. Noelle looked confused until she saw the sweet smile on Barbara’s face.
“Hey Noelle?”
“Yes?”
She leaned down and softly kissed her. “Happy Birthday.” She sat back up, still straddling Noelle’s lap.
Noelle blushed. “Thank you. I don’t think I could have asked for anything better than this.” She wrapped her hands around Barbara’s waist, who shivered under her touch.
“I hate to stop but” she looked around and down at the food. “We are in a pretty public space and we still have some lunch to finish. I’m too excited to eat much more but I wouldn’t mind a bit more privacy. Just in case.” Her cheeks flushed again, and she looked away.
“Privacy?” Noelle looked confused until the realization washed over her face. “Oh! I think that perhaps some privacy could be nice.” She smiled and lifted Barbara off of her lap before sitting up herself.
“My quarters at the church are actually relatively secluded. I even have a private entrance! Well, it’s more of a safety precaution than a luxury, but I can’t imagine anyone I would feel safer with than you.”
Noelle took her hand and kissed it. “And I can’t imagine any I would rather spend today with than you.”
