“California Brunette” is the latest hair color trend that has everyone running to their hair salon, inspiring photo in hand, looking for a color refresh. While you may not be familiar with the term "California Brunette" when it comes to hair color, you've probably seen the look on social media or been rocked by some of your favorite beauty influencers and celebrities. This trend has recently gone viral on TikTok, and is becoming one of the most popular hair color trends of Summer 2022. This hair color trend is dubbed the “California Brunette” because California is known for its sunny weather, and what does sunny weather do to your hair? Well, that relieves it of course.

The new hair color trend is basically subtle blonde, and it's easier to achieve than you might think. "Think sun-kissing, just returned from a tropical vacation. An easy pop of glow with the right placement that complements skin with intentional warmth and richness," Sierra Kener, a Los Angeles-based hairstylist, tells POPSUGAR.

The hair color trend is perfect for anyone with a darker base color who wants to change their look for the warmer months without doing anything too dramatic. The goal is to create natural-looking highlights that can be achieved simply by basking in the sun– or an expensive hair appointment– either way, our lips are sealed. The color should stay close to your original shade and should stay on the natural tone. Plus, since you're sticking with your natural hue, the treatment shouldn't be too tedious.

If you want to get your own California brunette look, your best bet is to head to the nearest salon with some inspiring photos on hand for a professional consultation and color. Kener says to ask your stylist for "A little lightness around the face with an even tone. Nothing too light or blonde." Kener adds that you should avoid harsh orange or red, "Think light caramel. Something that will complement skin and eye tones."

As with any hair color, after your visit to the salon, you'll want to make sure you're taking the right steps to keep your color looking fresh.
