Was poking around AO3 for kicks and giggles, and I find it fascinating how so many folks can just go ah, yes, this story Inspires me to Create, while this…not so much.
I know this isn’t entirely fair given the discrepancy in the amount of media per franchise, but here are the AO3 works counts for Dune, Star Wars, and Star Trek, all sci-fi classics that also have new additions to their respective franchises.
Especially given how Star Wars itself draws heavy inspiration from Dune, I just find the differences in these numbers interesting! And I feel the same! SW does appeal to me a lot more than the bloodline obsession/freaky eugenics/religious manipulation themes of Dune, which also exists in SW but far less.
(Also, while I really loved Chani in the new film, I definitely personally did not feel any shipping sparks between her and Paul, I just wanted her to get away. The guy does NOT deserve her in any way. (then again, I also felt no shipping sparks between Padmé and Anakin, so this could just be a me thing…))
This also reminds me of how the James Cameron Avatar films are a huge fandom flop, despite the budget and blockbustery fanfare they got.
To be clear, I don't necessary think media needs to spark fandom creativity in order to be good or worthwhile, and there's plenty of stuff I enjoy without feeling the need to create, so this isn't meant to be a criticism per se.
But I was just contemplating about different media and themes that inspire me and makes me want to engage in a community, versus stuff that doesn't.
If you have any thoughts, feel free to share!

Man. I just get so actually legitimately sad each time I remember that toh ended and that we live in the post-toh world. Like it really is over.
Ms Dana Terrace has said that she'd like to do more given the chance (and after some quality time off of bigger projects, just to chill), but as far as we know, it's the end.
Heck, we barely got anything after the final episode, no books, no special merch, no dedicated little chibi shorts, nothing really, aside from the, thankfully fun, get-togethers of the cast and crew!
Idk. Ah well actually nah, I do know, that this show just meant an enormous lot to me. Incredibly huge, the kind that you can't break away from and wouldn't want to anyway. The kind that feels like, man, where would I be without it.
Happy 1 Year, to the end of The Owl House. Thank you, The Owl House.
I hope the future is bright, for all of us.

also i went and saw the puss in boots movie despite not having seen the first one or any of the shrek movies and i wasnt expecting much but then was genuinely thrilled :D they do some really neat stuff with the animation!! theyve got some cool stylization going on!!! a lot of subtle painterly quality to lighting and texturing, a lot of hand-drawn smears and effects that really add a lot, and some SUPER neat fiddling with the framerate that is a totally new way of using the medium. id heard they did some cool stuff but was expecting a rip-off of exactly the tricks spiderverse pulled if anything -- but no, brand new stuff!!! it was really just a cool movie to look at!

also I have to tell you guys how annoying & loud I am about my interests & how well my siblings know me because it made me laugh. me & my sister were listing our top 10 fictional characters & I was in my top 5 & paused for a long time & she sighs and rolls her eyes & goes “rose I know for a fact jet is in your top 5 don’t pretend he’s not it’s literally ok you already listed azula you can have more than one avatar character in the top 5” (I was trying to diversify it since I love a lot of media ok lmao). then later my parents were talking about rain wilson & his roles & my brother laughs & goes “well only rose will get this but he’s great as a fish boy” like yeah ok I get it I’m predictable & known lmao

today the bfi southbank cinema in london showed una questione privata as part of their season on the taviani brothers (who directed it) so of course i dressed up in my best approximation of what milton unaquestioneprivata is wearing in this movie and went. it was my first time (after like. uhh. a large number of watches) seeing this with actual subtitles that made sense and also just a lovely time. they handed out both a free book about the directors and a little page of their comments on the film. ideal experience for people like me who are a lil tiny bit obsessed with this one
(btw if this sounds fun to you and you're in london / able to reach it easily there's another showing on monday at 9pm!)

the pan over San Fran the same opening shot as the movie... the plain honesty and vulnerability and youth in I really want to interview you ... in 2022 Daniel falling asleep from the medication right as Louis reaches the climax of the story.... oh girl. Louis now casually offering immortality. Daniel no longer that interested. o girl.
