Hello :3 I saw your blog answering anons on the timeline, so a random A.C.E rant from a somewhat new Choice is coming if you’re ready. I’m not actually mad typing this all down but I’m frustrated and trying to find ways out to make A.C.E bigger with my social media managing/marketing/business lectures I’ve had in the past lol. Sorry if this is long but I need to hear opinions other than mine </3
I’m also an ARMY and saw a thread called “Jimin Being Tiny” and it was a bunch of pics him being cute and I enjoyed it so much. Now if I wanted to do the same for Byeongkwan for example, I know more than the half of the Choice fandom will literally be threatening me just because I called him small (FOR THE REASONS OF AN IDOL ACTING CUTE FOR THE FANS AND NOT THAT I DON’T RECOGNISE HIS STRENGTH). A populer choice on twitter would say “don’t call byeongkwan tiny he doesn’t like it” and others literally will be okay with it like they know as if byeongkwan is their cousin. I just know for a fact this fandom is so focused on attacking others AMONGST THE FANDOM and that is exactly why we can’t grow. It’s almost like popular choice accounts are gatekeeping A.C.E. Everyone is afraid of being cancelled and don’t talk about A.C.E on social media other than saying they are “talented” and “underrated”. They are very talented indeed, but Choice needs to understand that could be the least of marketing in the Kpop industry- especially if you don’t have a bigger company. Beat Ceo-nim is not doing the best job to promote them already, they almost never get a use of social media, when it basically is where everyone is into now. TXT for example, got so much attention just from several Tiktoks, promoting their music or hopping onto trends. They ain’t showing titties or anything, just some dances and songs. I mean A.C.E are already showing tits with this comeback lmao. I believe they have such hidden gems and would make a great use of them on the social media entering the trends. I know it’s not up to them, but it would’ve been so much better reaching out to new people. Another thing. I love their music, but as a BL lover, i first got into them with Wowkwan. Then, on a q&a their manager(?) says “Wowkwan is a fantasy, not real” (*screams* what was the reasonnnnn) and everyone in the fandom suddenly was against wowkwan and was “protecting boys” from the “rumors.” They won’t understand no one ships idols romantically already like it’s all about cute interactions and being close and the rest is up to imagination as any fan would do. For instance I can’t think anything like this happening to Woo/San from Ateez or Chan/Lix from Skz. I’m so upset about this lol. I love A.C.E and i’m an OT5, but we almost never get unit or OT5 interactions (the hotel room and the Christmas vlive were exceptions). For BTS, you could find millions of moments they give us as friendship moments or emotional moments with each other as a team, but I feel like A.C.E falls more into the individualistic category, where it’s important for every each of them to shine, rather than as a team. I’m not saying they don’t care about the team, they care about each other a lot and you can feel this from the letters they wrote each other or on that Sehyoon birthday vlive, I just don’t think they have enough interactions or moments that they showed a lot of emotions. It makes me question if they are not fully comfortable with each other or rather, stopping themselves from acting too much in front of the camera. Are they friends, or a team that was formed for a job? Junhee often talks about how being an idol is a job, but people on social media are on the social media just because they want to see the emotions they haven’t had the chance to feel irl. We already have struggles as international fans with A.C.E cause of the language barrier, unlike for example SKZ or NCT, we just need to understand as a fandom that this is a competition for A.C.E in the industry, and gatekeeping content or constantly fighting each other isn’t helping. For a win, we need to be promoting a bit more out of our comfort zone (also Beat Ceo-nim please hear me out) and stop being mad to each other for things like calling members positive adjectives, for liking an interaction between members or even for not streaming.
I'm pretty new to the fandom myself and haven't encountered any toxicity yet, but I've also only talked to Tumblr CHOICE. I know all the toxic stans play on the Twitter playground because it's a more popular platform and they'll have a greater chance of being seen to spread their negativity.
I feel like if you want to make a soft Byeongkwan thread on the bird app then by all means please do. There's going to be antis on the platform no matter what kind of thread you make. It doesn't matter how you word it, it's gonna offend someone. The antis are loud on Twitter on purpose. Their job is to push down the positive and bring up the negative.
I also don't really know how promos go for A.C.E. This was my very first comeback for them so I didn't know what to expect, and since they're from a small company it wouldn't have been fair of me to compare the quality to a group from the Big 3 or BigHit.
I mean they did a pretty great job with promotions prior to dropping the album and title, but I do know they they did a trash job of preparing CHOICE for when the actual song would drop. I remember seeing a lot of upset stans in the tag. Also I didn't know that they would only drop the MV on 1theK and not their own channel. Usually with MVs they're posted on 1theK as well as their own channel so there is dual exposure and more views. So that was pretty negligent too. IDK if A.C.E will be promoting a full month on music shows or just a couple of weeks.
I agree that TikTok would be a good platform for A.C.E as well as any kpop idol to promote on just because it's literally the most popular platform right now and they could be working on making one or maybe the members don't want a TikTok, honestly there's no real way of knowing about anything like that.
As far as interactions. I know nothing of the ships except maybe DongJun because they hang out a lot together. Also fans being mad about certain member interactions in a group is a toxic tale that's old as time. It happens in every fandom so I'm not surprised but what I've learned is that fans don't really dictate who interacts with whom, though it may seem that way to some stans. A.C.E spends most of their time with each other so they're not just going to stop interacting with a member because some immature and spoiled fan said it's messing with their ship.
I never really noticed a lack of ot5 content, but then again I don't really watch any lives of any idols because I don't have the time. I do know that both Byeongkwan and Sehyoon have taken personal hiatuses to work on their mental health so that could be a reason for lack of ot5 content. This job is stressful if not overwhelming most times, maybe some alone time is just something they really need to keep going. It doesn't matter if they're real friends or not (it's not really my place to say. Tho I think they are actual friends). Maybe one or more members is too tired to do a group live or maybe they're doing something else that they rarely have time to do. A lot of factors could go into why there may be a lack of ot5 content. That also could be a reason why they don't have personal IG/Twitter accounts. I could go on and on about possible reasons.
I'm sorry I'm not much help in these matters, my judgment is very impartial these days. I try not to be where any of the negativity is because it ruins things for me.

Beings of Faedaal
It all begins with the deities, or rather it all beings with the Goddess of Life and the Goddess of Death, but that is a discussion for another time. For now, know that the goddess and gods were the first to walk this world. From them came four three different beings: Fae, Humans, (and) Nymphs. and The Grey.
[Continues under the cut]
Fae
Seen as a favorite of the gods, they were gifted with cunning words, able to bind anyone to their will through them alone, but at the cost of being unable to ever lie. Do not be fooled into thinking this prevents them from misguiding you into a bad deal. Fae are known to be skinnier and taller than humans on average, with long pointed ears, ever so slightly sharper teeth, and their skin is bluish or purplish in tone. Their eyes are larger as well and tend to be lighter in color, resembling the crystals which they make their Courts from in the safety of the caverns underground. Perhaps it would be best to leave their customs for another day as well.
An interesting note here is that Keepers are members of the Fae that are completely immune to magic, though how this happened is completely unknown. This has produced an interesting side effect of making them able to sense magic around them, though it is reported that different people experience it differently. Outside of this, there is no other notable difference. [A note has been scribbled into the margins: When exposed to enough magic or traumatic events, though this is exceedingly rare, it seems that Keepers are able to gain elemental abilities. If pushed too far, I wonder if it would have similar results such as Demons?]
Though the exact reason for the existence of Goblins has been lost, are we really to believe that old story about the vain and greedy Court? it is nevertheless clear that they diverged from Fae at some point in history. They have retreated farther into the extensive cave systems and their obsession passion for beautiful things has only grown. Their teeth are sharper, their ears having drooped slightly from elongating even more, and their eyes have grown smaller and lighter, almost white, and their skin seems to be more leathery and almost cracked in appearance.
Humans
The most widespread numerous visible of all beings, they have completely taken over the surface world, creating large empires over Faedaal. They also actively seek out the other groups the most and new places. Truth be told, few actually understand this group, as they have become exceedingly powerful despite any inherent abilities. Perhaps divine blessing has been invoked? Need more be said?
It should be noted that Casters are, technically speaking, not a separate group from Humans, as anyone is capable of becoming one with enough dedication. Though, it can be said that certain lines do have a better mastery over it. The only physical difference tends to be the graying of the skin after long exposure to magic, and of course, the glowing of the veins and eyes when they cast. Demons are Casters who have overexerted their magic and as such are incapable of using it. Their skin, eyes, and hair have permanently grayed, and they are forced to live off being near magic. No instances have ever been recorded of this being reversed, and they are generally shunned from society.
Sirens are a strange group to be sure, as no one is quite sure where exactly they came from. There are quite a few stories, such as the famous love story between a deity and Fae girl, but their physical similarities are more akin to humans. In fact, the only physical difference is the large bird wings on their back, and their hair matches their wings, and bird legs. They have the ability to create convincing illusions for anyone who hears their song, seeing visions of their deepest desires, and falling victim to whatever the Siren tells them to do. Their wings have allowed them to spread across the world, but they seem to prefer islands and isolations. Perhaps due to the suspicion shown towards them by other beings?
Nymphs
Nymphs are beings of nature who are easier to discuss based off three groups. However, given their secretive and shy natures, it is hard to gather information, making this section the second most incomplete.
Dryads can appear as beings or creatures with bark for skin and grass, vines, flowers, and leaves for hair and fur. There power allows them to control the growth of plants. More information depends heavily on the type of plant from which they are derived.
Frostbitten have white skin, and hair like ice, also capable of taking the form or beings or creatures, but it seems once these forms are decided they are unable to shift between them like dryads. The world freezes around them, and they are only known to inhabit the Wastes.
Mae must remain in waters, taking the both Fae and creature traits at once while in water, but disappearing outside of it. Almost nothing else is known.
Desert Nymphs? Reports have been made of people seeing these beings, but the validity has never been proven.
The Grey

7 Surprising Ways YouTube Hashtags Can Increase Views
Tumblr media
Let's talk about hashtags. This # symbol has been around for years. Still, it wasn't until August 23, 2007, when Twitter's creator decided to capitalize on the symbol to solidify themselves as "the" social media platform to use during the time.
Now you can't see a post without it, social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and now YouTube is dependent on hashtags to increase exposure and grab your target audience's attention amidst the seas of content.
Youtube allows you to add hashtags to your video title and descriptions to improve a video's discoverability on YouTube. The tip that no one tells you is that there's a lot more that goes into using hashtags on Youtube than people let on.
So let's change that, today I'm going to show you seven surprising ways YouTube hashtags can increase views and more!
1. How to Find YouTube Hashtags
Hashtags act as keywords or little discovery tags that allow people to find your video instantly. Like any effective hashtag or YouTube SEO process, it begins with video keyword research.
What's the difference between regular keywords and video keywords or YouTube tags you'll be using for your videos?
They are pretty similar in the fact that they both allow Google and people to understand what your video or article is about. The only difference is that keywords used in articles, ads, and videos can vary in keyword volume, location, and popularity.
For example, if you search for the keyword fitness on google you’ll see the following search results, courtesy of Ahrefs:
Tumblr media
But it's completely different when you search for the same keyword on YouTube:
Tumblr media
Popular hashtags will always be popular, that's a fact, and if a keyword/hashtag is popular, it makes it harder for your content to rank.
Videos that don't make the first search page of YouTube rarely get seen. Having your video rank in the top ten should be your priority, so find a specific hashtag or a keyword that your content can rank highly on. You'll need to do some research.
Here are some tools you can use for hashtag or keywords you can use in your next video:
Ahrefs
Tumblr media
Google Adwords Keyword Planner
Tumblr media
Moz Keyword Tool
Tumblr media
2. Use Hashtags Related to Your Topic
Now that we know to find keywords, it's time for you to search for hashtags that are actually relevant to your video.
I know it can be tempting only to add popular hashtags to your YouTube description, but you have to think smart.
You have to use hashtags that are relevant to your video.
If you add popular hashtags for the sake of ranking, you might end up attracting people who expect to view a different type of content than what your video has to offer.
This can shorten your watch hours and turn away people from subscribing.
Not to mention if the hashtags you use aren't relevant to the topic, your video can come off as spam or irrelevant.
YouTube only rewards videos that are relevant to the viewer's search property on the first search page.
Tumblr media
To find the relevant hashtags for your YouTube channel, start by creating a Seed Keywords List. Seed Keywords are terms that describe broad topics in a specific niche or category.
For example, if you're a YouTuber that specializes in social media marketing, your Seed Keywords could be:
Seed Keyword: Social Media Management Tools
Your potential YouTube video could have the following hashtags (but are not limited to):
Social Media Management Tools
Social Media Apps for Marketing 2020
SMM Apps
3. Use Hashtags Based on Your Location
On Instagram, you can add geotag so that viewers can see your location.
If you're a lifestyle or travel blogger or someone who does reviews on places, adding a location hashtag to your YouTube video can help to increase your video views as they search for other opinions related to that location.
You can add locations such as cities, countries, or brick and mortar stores.
Tumblr media
4. Use Branded Hashtags in Your Videos
A branded hashtag is a hashtag that is used to identify and find a brand's content easily. This can be your brand name, a phrase, or slogan.
For example, Nike has #justdoit, while Spotify has #spotify. The two most important aspects of well-branded hashtags are:
They're short or easy to type
They're only associated with your brand (by everyone, not just you.)
Tumblr media
Start using your branded hashtag on all your social media platforms to increase the search volume and help viewers or followers to find you easily no matter what platform they are on.
5. Do a Review on Your Top Videos Hashtags
If you notice a video you uploaded is doing very well, then take a look at the topic and the key hashtag that you used for that video.
YouTubers tend to be very quick to make videos on the latest trends and topics, which is not a bad thing, but it's not always sustainable.
Instead, look for the topics that seem to be doing very well and find related keywords or topics and branch out.
For instance, if you're a lifestyle vlogger and you find that your viewers love hearing your shared stories, create more videos related to that topic and use popular storytime hashtags for easy search.
Likewise, if you're a company and you find that people watch more FAQ videos than product videos, then make more FAQ videos and use the hashtags to boot.
Tumblr media
6. Be Aware That Hashtags on YouTube Have Downsides
Apart from finding hashtags that have high search volume, always make sure to do your research on what type of content is associated with the hashtag you're using. Not all popular hashtags are related to good things.
Type the hashtag on YouTube and see what type of content YouTubers are making with it. If it's positive, add it to your next video, if it's negative, throw it out the door.
There's no way your one-off video is going to change the viewers' perception when there are thousands of videos that say otherwise.
Then, use those same hashtags on your video.
7. Keep Your Eye on Competitor's Hashtag Strategy
Like every good SEO strategy knowing what your competitors are using can give you a good idea of what other hashtags should be on your radar. Take a look at their top videos and channel, as well as other social media platforms.
Tumblr media
If you're trying to create a ranking video, don't just consider the hashtags but the content itself. Match it or make something more significant because as great as hashtags are, you can have the right hashtags on your videos but still have sucky content.
Summary
YouTube marketing is far more diverse than most marketers let on, and hashtags are only the beginning of it all.
No one gains over 1000 subscribers on YouTube overnight, unless you have a massive ad budget, it takes work and dedication to see solid growth.
Yes, we do have those rare gems of YouTubers who go viral overnight, but that’s the 1% of the YouTube population.
For the other 99%, we have to practice good YouTube practices such as checking analytics, strategy, hashtags, and consistent uploads.

How to Become an SEO Expert, According to HubSpot’s SEO Team
Braden Becker’s journey to becoming an SEO specialist at HubSpot is a slightly unconventional one. In college, he studied Writing & Rhetoric, which helped him land his first job as a copy editor at a B2B trade publication. As he progressed through his career, Braden pivoted to content marketing, where he worked as an editor at a SaaS company and then as a content manager at the world’s largest environmental services firm.
You might think someone like Braden would continue to climb the creative career ladder in content marketing. But today he actually spends more time in Ahrefs than he does in Google Docs. As the historical optimization lead on HubSpot’s Blog Team, Braden’s main responsibility is to identify blog posts that are falling in organic traffic and optimize them for search engines to rank higher on Google. He’s even sharpened his SEO chops enough to co-create the SEO strategy for all of HubSpot’s blogs.
Traits of an SEO Expert As a writer and editor for most of his career, SEO had always been in the periphery of Braden’s work — as it was a subject he had a solid grasp on but not necessarily a lot of expertise in. Today, though, SEO is his central focus. Braden, along with other SEO specialists at HubSpot, Aja Frost and Victor Pan, offered their advice about what it takes to become an SEO expert and the paths they took to get there.
How to Become an SEO Expert
Develop your skills. Research the field. Regularly test your SEO knowledge. Take a course and get certified. Find a method/tool that works for you. Grow your network.
Some SEO specialists don’t start out with the intention to dedicate their careers to SEO. Some start completely by accident. Let’s go over how HubSpot experts started theirs, and what you can do to start yours. 1. Develop your skills. “Getting a job in SEO ideally requires two things: content creation skill and analytical skill. Most SEO professionals today have one of those and develop the other,” Becker says. SEO experts are skilled writers with creative instincts. It’s helpful for those in the SEO profession to have a strong writing background because it takes creativity to optimize content in a way both Google and audiences will comprehend. In fact, Becker has noted that his writing background helped him get his start in the SEO industry. “My background in writing and editing helped me get my foot in the door, but a willingness to focus on the structure, mechanics, and intent behind my writing is what I think secured my role as an SEO specialist for HubSpot.” Braden’s story of pivoting from a creative career in content marketing to an analytical one isn’t as rare as you might think. Before Aja Frost became a senior SEO strategist at HubSpot, she was the editor of HubSpot’s Sales Blog. “I taught myself how to do keyword research and competitive analysis as the Editor for HubSpot’s Sales Blog,” Aja says. “The Sales Blog’s traffic had been flat for a year and a half — I noticed that the only posts that consistently generated views for us were getting all of those views from search. So I began looking for sales-related keywords we could rank for that would help boost organic traffic.” So, how do you start developing your skills to be SEO-ready? Here’s what Aja had to say about her strategy for keeping her SEO skills sharp. “To refine my SEO expertise, I constantly read. I’m really interested in technical SEO, so I look for blog posts, white papers, and research about site architecture and navigation, website speed, and everything that goes into that, including structured data,” she says. “SEO by the Sea, Sistrix, and Blind Five Year Old are all great technical SEO resources, along with (unsurprisingly) the Google Webmaster Blog. I’m a member of a few SEO subreddits (/seo and /bigseo are the most active). And I follow a ton of SEOs on Twitter — they drop random factoids or insights all the time.” Like Braden mentioned, a lot of SEOs start with one skill and start developing others. So, whether you’ve got an analytical mind and want to start a blog to practice writing, or you’re a seasoned writer looking to train your technical mind, having a balance in both will help you in your SEO career. 2. Research the field. In addition to initial research about SEO, it’s essential to keep up-to-date on the latest industry changes, so you aren’t using outdated optimization techniques Google doesn’t understand. For example, when Aja noticed the Sales Blog traffic was flat, starting SEO research helped her uncover why: she wasn’t delivering content audiences searched for. Aja doing research about SEO led her to discovering ways to improve the blog’s performance. SEO is always changing, so it’s crucial to keep updating your knowledge on the topic. To build his fundamental knowledge of SEO, Victor Pan, the head of technical SEO at HubSpot, cites reading as one of the best habits he’s gotten into. “I used to be a voracious reader on all publicly available information on SEO. I had an RSS feed of search-related blogs and news websites I would go through for a whole hour every day,” he says. “Mere exposure to ideas makes unknown problems in SEO easier to tackle when you have other people’s experiences or frameworks to build from.” For Victor, reading was one of the best ways to develop his SEO fundamentals. Alternatively, Aja took courses to broaden her knowledge. How will you use your time to research SEO? 3. Regularly test your SEO knowledge. Putting theory into practice gives you the practical knowledge and experience needed to level up as an SEO. In this way, SEO is kind of like playing a sport. You can read all about hitting a baseball or throwing a football, but if you never practice, you’ll never reach your full potential. To stay ahead of the curve in any industry, reading the latest news and research is hugely beneficial. But as an SEO, when everything is constantly changing, reading isn’t enough. To gain the practical experience that’ll truly take your SEO skills to the next level, you need to constantly test industry assumptions and your new ideas. “I test a lot of things to refine my SEO expertise. Should your brand be in your title tags? Is internal anchor text worthwhile to still do in 2020 to move rankings? What happens when you purchase fake social “signals” — do you see an increase in organic traffic?” says Pan. “Failed experiments taught me just as much as successful ones, and it made me a much more confident SEO whenever I would make any improvements to content. Just because, in one instance, making a change resulted in an improvement, doesn’t mean that change in another place will also result in an improvement— which is why we have to test and grasp causation over just correlation.” 4. Take a course and get certified. Earning a certification ensures that you have the proper knowledge in a certain area to successfully practice on your own. It also gives you credibility when you network on professional sites such as LinkedIn. When doing initial SEO research, Aja found courses she could take in order to get a certification for SEO, which opened up more doors. “This led me to experiment with SEMrush, AnswerThePublic, Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and of course, HubSpot’s own SEO tools. I read a ton of blog posts and eventually got my Google Analytics certification.” If you decide to take a course, discover which one will provide you with the skills you need to advance in your SEO career. For instance, if you find that a certain course doesn’t go in-depth about subjects you need help in, it’s probably not the course for you. To get a head start on courses you can take, here is a list of three, two of which are part of a certification track for content marketing and inbound marketing. 5. Find a method/tool that works for you. Similar to finding resources that work for you and your skill set, it’s imperative to find an SEO routine or tool that will become your foundation. For keyword research, SEOs like to reference their personal arsenal of tools. For example, in addition to HubSpot’s SEO tools, some of HubSpot’s SEO experts also use tools, such as SEMrush, for additional research. You don’t have to use every single tool that exists to conduct your SEO tasks, you just have to make sure the tools are helping you accomplish your goals and giving you accurate practice with the subject. If you don’t know where or how to start searching for tools, here’s eight you can check out. Remember, you don’t have to commit to eight, just to the one(s) that’ll get your job done. Use what will keep your research well-rounded, accurate, and easy to comprehend. 6. Grow your network. Becoming an expert in SEO also means growing your network of fellow SEO professionals. There’s SEO groups on LinkedIn you can join, subreddits Aja mentioned, like SEO, and conferences you can attend. Broadening your circle of SEO experts grows your knowledge and credibility in the field. If you become enough of an expert, you can also speak at conferences in the industry. For example, Braden and Victor led a session at INBOUND — their presentation, “How to Grow (Your Organic Traffic) Better” introduces SEO changes, how to adapt to them, and how to use some basic SEO methods to optimize content. To get started building your network, look at the resources you have available. If you have a LinkedIn account, you can start making those industry connections. You can also watch YouTube videos for quick SEO tips and engage with other learners in the comments to pick up tips from peers. Based on Braden’s, Aja’s, and Victor’s stories, becoming an SEO expert doesn’t mean you have to start and finish your career as an SEO. Pivoting from one role to an SEO role and developing your expertise from then on is entirely possible — you just need to be willing to learn and adapt.

A Guide for Decoding Every SPF Term You Need to Know
Flip-flops and tank tops. Backyard Organic product Online  barbecues. These are a few of the terrific things about summer and why many people adore the sun. And there are more basic factors.
By Way of Example, the sun modulates our circadian rhythms, The sunlight also supplies our bodies with a crucial source of vitamin D and cheers us up when we're feeling down, notes past study. Meanwhile, other past research links sunlight to decreasing tumor growths, and it might play a role in treating several inflammatory diseases -- however too much exposure to the sun can increase your risk for potentially fatal skin cancer.
That is why for decades today, shopping for sunscreen has Been a fact of life -- and as more study focuses on the pros and cons of different sunscreen ingredients and labeling rules, it has also become more and more confusing. As critically important because it is to reduce the danger of skin cancer, a lot of men and women remain woefully in the dark about some fundamental facts. A study published in September 2015 in JAMA Dermatology discovered that fewer than half 114 patients surveyed at a dermatology clinic understood the meaning of common sunscreen terms such as"broad spectrum" and"SPF."
"Labels are perplexing," says the board-certified Dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, who's in private practice in New York City. "There are so many different types of ingredients, formulas, and degrees of feasible protection. In a competitive environment such as sunscreen, there are so many distinct products on the market making several distinct claims. Finally language on the bottles may lead to customer confusion."
iStock
What follows is a Vital guide to understanding the Most frequent terms found on sunscreen labels, to help you discover the item that's ideal for you and your loved ones.
Active/Inactive
Since sunscreens are categorized as over-the-counter
The inactive ingredients are the remaining portion of the product formula that might help stabilize the solution or offer extra functions," says Carla Burns, a research and database analyst in the Environmental Working Group in Washington, DC, who managed the update to the 2019 guide. Antioxidants
"Antioxidants are chemicals which absorb energy from Free radicals and prevent them from causing damage to the skin," says Dr. Zeichner. "Think of them as fire extinguishers that put out skin inflammation" Frequent antioxidants include vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene, and selenium, according to FamilyDoctor.org.
Benefits Avobenzone
Avobenzone is a topical, broad-range UV protector which blocks UVA I, UVA II, and UVB wavelengths, limiting the impact of UV rays on skin. While avobenzone is a frequent ingredient, do not let its ubiquity lull you into a false sense of security: There is considerable ongoing controversy regarding its security, and avobenzone is just one of 12 sunscreen ingredients on which the FDA is now conducting additional research. Baby
While this term shows up in many Justin Bieber tunes, When you see it onto a sunscreen tag, it means something entirely different. According to the American Association of Dermatology, the FDA has no strict definition for this term. However, generally speaking, when you see"baby" on wrinkle packaging it typically (although not always) means that it is a mineral or bodily sunscreen.
"Sunscreens which are recommended for babies tend to be Less easily consumed and reflect light rather than converting the light into heat, which is harder on sensitive skin types such as that of infants," clarifies the nyc dermatologist Michelle Henry, MD.. And PS: All these formulas work just as well for grown-ups that wish to prevent chemicals.
Massimo Gentili/Getty Images
"This is one of the most important terms to look for when "Broad spectrum implies that it protects you from UVA and UVB [rays], which can be both important not just for skin cancer prevention but also to decrease accelerated aging." UVA rays contribute to accelerating signs of aging, whereas UVB rays bring about sunburns, notes the University of Iowa.
Chemical
Are found in most wide spectrum sunscreens. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, these chemicals, like UVA-absorbing oxybenzone or even a benzophenone, may in rare instances cause skin reactions, such as acne, burning, blisters, itching itching, rash, redness, stinging, swelling, and tightening of skin. "Chemical sunscreens include chemicals which absorb UV light and stop it from entering the skin," states Dr. Zeichner. "Some common ingredients used in odor blends include phthalates, which are shown to disrupt hormone activity, and botanicals, which may lead to skin sensitization or allergic reactions." Burns says your safest bet would be to decide on sunscreens that list just what their odor components are, or better yet go using a fragrance-free option.
Free Radicals
Free radicals are compounds which have high levels of energy,'' states Zeichner. "From the skin, they could harm cells' DNA and weaken collagen, can advance skin aging and lead to skin cancer." According to the EWG's 2019 report, several sunscreens don't offer sufficient protection against UVA rays, which penetrate skin tissues more deeply and therefore are most responsible for generating free radicals. According to past research, a lot of free radicals in the body may result in oxidative stress, which can be linked to different chronic illnesses, including cancer and autoimmune diseases. Hypoallergenic
According to Dermaviduals, this term suggests that a Sunscreen is not as likely to cause allergic reactions, which are a fantastic thing, especially for individuals with sensitive skin. However, the FDA does not have any significance of the term"hypoallergenic," so companies can label products with that term without having to prove they meet any hypoallergenic criteria. "Usually the expression usually means the product is free of dyes and scents, says Dr. Zeichner. "Whether a product is hypoallergenic or not did not affect the sun protection benefits."
While some products offer both protection against Sunlight And bothersome insects, according to the Mayo Clinic, it is better to use different sunscreen and insect repellents. "Application of sunscreen and insect repellent at the same time may lead to an increase in penetration of insect poison through the skin," says Zeichner. "Applications should be separated in time by 20 minutes."

Mattifying
If you want to protect yourself from the sun's damaging Rays without appearing too shiny, or you've got oily skin, search for a mattifying sunscreen, which can be formulated with oil-absorbing ingredients, according to Henry.

Mineral sunscreens can also be Called physical sunscreens Since they act like a shield, sitting on the surface of the skin and deflecting the sun's beams, clarifies Zeichner. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, mineral sunscreens frequently contain active ingredients titanium oxide, zinc oxide, or both. If you've got sensitive skin, opt for this type of sunscreen.
Noncomedogenic
According to Henry, noncomedogenic means a sunscreen has Ingredients which are not as likely to trigger breakouts by clogging your skin pores. "Noncomedogenic sunscreens are a good alternative for somebody who's more prone to acne," she states. "Look for ingredients such as titanium and zinc dioxide."

According to the EWG, the FDA has raised concerns regarding absorption of oxybenzone to the skin. "Oxybenzone was reported to be a hormone disruptor; nonetheless, dependent on my currently available data, there's no evidence that this is actually true of Oxybenzone-containing sunscreens," says Zeichner. Octinoxate
Following Is a moral quandary: organic products  Sometimes what is good for your Skin is not good for things with fins. In accordance with Supergoop! Founder and CEO Holly Thaggard, who's based in Houston,"octinoxate is a powerful transparent UVB sunscreen filter and also one of those few sunscreen active ingredients allowed for use by the FDA. However, a recent body of research has suggested that octinoxate can possibly be damaging to coral reefs." The compound, along with oxybenzone, has been shown to contribute to coral bleaching and the destruction of coral reefs, based on a 2015 report from the International Coral Reef Institute, which urges customers seek reef-friendly sunscreen options.
Paraben-Free
Compounds that prolong the shelf life of products, and protect against growth of bacteria and fungi in makeup and other skin-care products such as sunscreen. (Spoiler alert: Not everyone likes rubbing mould on their faces.) Unfortunately, according to Breastcancer.org, because parabens can have weak estrogen-like properties, they could possibly be linked to breast cancer and fertility problems. However, there is no scientific consensus about this issue. The FDA notes that in this moment, there is not enough evidence"showing that parabens as they're used in cosmetics have an impact on individual health," although the agency is continuing to research their potential dangers and possible alternative compounds. Photoaging
Unfortunately, this is not a program in your telephone that reveals What you will look like when you are older -- that the definition is much less fun. "Photo aging is premature aging of skin because of exposure to ultraviolet ," Zeichner states. For those who like their definitions much more"science-y," Henry adds that picture aging is"the procedure for the destruction of one's collagen and the look of fine lines wrinkles -- something known as dermatoheliosis." (We just call it appearing older than you really are from spending too much time in the sun.)
Photostable
When you Find the words"photograph stable" on a sunscreen Label, know that the item will remain secure in UV light. "The main purpose Of a sunscreen formula is to protect skin from the harmful  flipkart  UV rays emitted By the sun," states Thaggard. "If a sunscreen formula is not photostable, it Means that its protective attributes begin to diminish and become less Effective in the presence of sunshine, therefore not satisfactorily providing the UV Protection you're relying upon it for."

Is Your Brand Breaking the Law on Social Media?
Ambiguous rules and lax enforcement of resharing original content on social media has perpetuated the theft of the creators’ intellectual property. But that’s changing as the creative class – photographers, videographers, musicians, et al. – are more likely to enforce their legal and moral rights in the growing multibillion-dollar social media industry.
If your brand doesn’t rely solely on commissioned or in-house content, you could have potential legal exposure from the images you use on social media. That’s why you might want to rethink or at least review your social media content policies.
Unless your #socialmedia images are commissioned or created in-house, you may be breaking the law. @allen3m ‏ Click To Tweet
U.S. copyright law provides statutory damages up to $150,000 per image for willful infringement. And, though you may not read about a lot of court decisions on copyright infringement, remember many cases are settled out of court, never to be shared publicly.
Mitigate your and your brand’s risk by understanding some key intellectual property (IP) insights and following a few hints I’ve found helpful even though I’m not an attorney.
HANDPICKED RELATED CONTENT: Avoid Legal Action: Take Proper Steps to Own the Content
Bots and automation make finding infringements easier
Google Images has a reverse image search feature that allows users to click on the camera then upload an image and view the websites using that image. Companies like Getty Images automate similar technology to find instances of unlicensed use and automatically dispatch letters seeking compensation for commercial infringement. Here’s one way to respond if you get a copyright infringement letter.
Technological improvements will continue to make it easier and cheaper for content creators to find stolen images, and properly licensing images is a simple way to avoid costly penalties.
Do this: License your images from stock photo sites or directly from photographers to avoid potential liability. Use a digital asset management (DAM) system to track your content licenses.
HANDPICKED RELATED CONTENT: How to Use Content That Isn’t Yours
One brand’s permission doesn’t mean everyone can use it
Tagging the originator of an image doesn’t give the poster a legal license to reuse content. And given that images are reposted then reposted then reposted, original attribution often is lost. In other words, you might not only illegally post an image, you might credit the wrong person or brand.
Tagging the originator of an image doesn’t mean you have the legal license to reuse the content. @allen3m‏ Click To Tweet
A large fashion publication with 3 million followers recently reposted an image that appeared on the Instagram account of French hotel Domaine des Hauts. It didn’t seek permission or credit the photographer. Perhaps the media outlet thought it was OK to repost the image without permission because it was a marketing image. But fans of the photographer Jamie Beck recognized the reused image and cried foul. Although the publication quickly removed the image and licensed another one from the original photographer to the satisfaction of both parties (and their followers), the incident is a prime example of how the appearance of a brand’s content in social media isn’t a blanket license for others to use at will.
Do this: Avoid reposting other user’s content, even marketing-related content, unless you have explicit permission.
“Fair use” isn’t what it sounds like
People often cite “fair use” as a defense for breaking copyright law. But the concept is frequently misunderstood. U.S. copyright law poses the following four characteristics to evaluate the question of fair use:
Purpose and character of the use (including whether the use is of a commercial nature or for nonprofit educational purposes)
Nature of the copyrighted work
Amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole
Effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work
Examples of commonly accepted fair use include but aren’t limited to educational purposes, criticism, and satire. Brands rarely repost images under these contexts, thus their use is unlikely to pass the fair use test.
Brands reuse of images is unlikely to pass the “fair use” test, says @allen3m. ‏ Click To Tweet
Images from or about the news and celebrity images are frequently reposted without permission. Neither is considered fair use. In fact, there’s a decent amount of case law supporting the rights of the creative creators. Even reusing an image of your brand or you may not constitute fair use. Model Gigi Hadid posted a photo of herself taken by Peter Cepeda to her Instagram account. Presumably, she believed she had the legal right to publish a photo of herself. But the photographer sued for copyright infringement, and the case was settled out of court.
Infringement gets murky when someone uses another brand’s content (e.g., product or campaign image) on their blog or social media post. From a legal standpoint it shouldn’t be done because the republisher doesn’t know the licensing terms between the original brand and the content creator. Though, from a practical perspective, brands usually want their content shared, so it’s unlikely that this usage would run afoul. But you never know. Use Google Images to see if the image is original to the brand. Checking the provenance (e.g., did it come from the brand’s website?) can mitigate your risk.
Do this: Don’t rely on fair use as a reason to avoid paid licenses. Create and enforce a content licensing and permission policy.
User-generated content is a largely untested area
Brands love user-generated content (UGC) because it’s free and builds affinity. There are many methods of collecting UGC (e.g., contests that require users to agree to a set of terms and conditions – one of which is giving the brand the rights to the UGC). Some brands rely on hashtags to cull UGC content, then use the hashtag as evidence of permission to repost.
Calvin Klein’s ongoing #MyCalvins campaign generates a seemingly endless supply of attractive millennials looking to become Insta-stars. One might plausibly argue the hashtag is specific enough that a consumer wouldn’t randomly use it without knowing it was part of a UGC campaign. (And Calvin Klein likely seeks explicit permission before it reposts on its Instagram account of 1.3 million-plus followers.) But I don’t know of any case law to suggest a hashtag alone represents a usage license, and brands need to be careful about interpreting it as such.
Hashtags provide user-generated categorization – an incredibly helpful taxonomical device that enhances discovery on social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter. But brands need to be careful in assuming the presence of a hashtag equates to permission. It almost certainly does not meet the threshold in most cases.
Don’t assume use of your brand’s hashtag equates permission to reuse the image, says @allen3m. Click To Tweet
Do this: Even if you encourage your audience to use brand-specific hashtags, seek written permission from the content creator before reposting.
Know the platform’s rules
Social media platforms have distinct personalities with different content focuses, but it’s important to remember most content is legally owned by the content creator. Although Instagram is a massive repository of over 40 billion photos, it is not a free stock photo site. In fact, its terms of use prohibit infringement of a third-party’s rights:
You represent and warrant that: (i) you own the Content posted by you on or through the Service or otherwise have the right to grant the rights and licenses set forth in these Terms of Use; (ii) the posting and use of your Content on or through the Service does not violate, misappropriate or infringe on the rights of any third party, including, without limitation, privacy rights, publicity rights, copyrights, trademark and/or other intellectual property rights; (iii) you agree to pay for all royalties, fees, and any other monies owed by reason of Content you post on or through the Service; and (iv) you have the legal right and capacity to enter into these Terms of Use in your jurisdiction.
And Instagram’s API Platform Policy prohibits violating other users’ rights. In 2015, Groupon was hit with a class action lawsuit for stealing location-tagged photos from Instagram and using the images to promote those businesses with Groupon deals. Interestingly, the main claim wasn’t copyright infringement, but using a person’s likeness (rights of publicity) to promote a business without the person’s consent.
Do this: Always obtain permission before reposting content. Tagging and/or adding a copyright disclaimer won’t provide you legal cover in infringement cases.
Always obtain permission before reposting #content, says allen3m. #copyrightlaw Click To Tweet
It’s confusing
The threat of lawsuit has forced the largest social media and content-sharing platforms to automate copyright infringement detection and monetization capabilities. For example, YouTube allows musicians to “cover” popular songs without obtaining a mechanical or synchronization license because they have deals in place with some of the major music publishers to automate the process. Automation simplifies accounting, but the artist might incorrectly believe that no licensing is necessary to use someone else’s intellectual property since the process is obfuscated. There’s no substitute for directly obtaining a license and using a system to manage compliance.
The average consumer rarely deals directly with licensing so it’s easy to be ignorant of the law. But the risk for brands is undeniably high. A corporate content policy is a starting point for risk mitigation (and don’t forget to involve your legal counsel).

Why U.S. Businesses Will Spend $21b on Native Advertising in 2018
This article was originally written at foxxr.com
Something has gone terribly wrong with old-school digital advertising.
When Joe McCambley created the world’s first display ad precisely 23 years ago in October 1994, 44 percent of people, who saw it, clicked on it. Fast forward our times, the average click-through rate (CTR) has dropped to a measly 0.19 percent, and the decline has been going on for a long time.
Researchers were reporting instances of “banner blindness” way back in 1998. Here is an excerpt from a Rice University study, Banner Blindness: Web Searchers Often Miss ‘Obvious’ Links:
The banners used in this experiment seem like they should be very obvious to users. They are large, brightly colored, and stand out from everything else on the page. However, this study shows that they are frequently missed by the users who are specifically looking for the information they contain. Not only do the banners not jump out at these users and grab attention, they seem to be particularly ignored.
Almost two decades later, banner blindness remains prevalent. Recent data from Google shows that 56.1 percent of all ad impressions are not even seen by real humans.
As if human indifference didn’t constitute enough bad news for advertisers, technology is assisting consumers in creating virtual walls to keep ads at bay. In 2016, ad blockers were active on 615 million devices worldwide.
That’s not good news for small businesses who were counting on old-school digital advertising to increase sales. Most of them did not anticipate these two challenges:
Ad blockers preventing ads from reaching out to the customers.
In case an ad manages to get through a blocker, it will be ignored
This said digital marketing is not dead. Forbes predicts U.S. digital marketing spend to touch $120 billion by 2021. It is just that the old-school techniques are not as effective as they used to be.
To reap a high return on investment (ROI) from their digital marketing campaigns, businesses will have to adapt, and going native is one of the most profitable ways to go ahead.
What Is Native Advertising?
I didn’t think I would explain what native advertising was when I was writing the first paragraph. I thought that everyone already knew. I was wrong.
The moment I wrote native advertising in my Microsoft Word document in large letters, a colleague who was happening to pass by, stopped and asked, “Native advertising? Are you writing for the Cherokee or Navajo?”
– “No, sir. This has nothing to do with the Indians.” – “What in the world is native advertising, then?”
I was silent for a couple of seconds, thinking how I could explain native advertising to someone who had no clue about it. His time is precious, so I had to be succinct. And here is what I came up with:
Native advertising is a kind of advertising that is indistinguishable from editorial content.
If you were to find a native ad on Forbes, the New York Times, or Santa Cruz Sentinel, except for a little “sponsored” tag, you wouldn’t even be able it distinguish it from the articles written by their editorial staff.
Native ads are written in tone and style similar to the other content on the platform on which they are published. And native advertising rarely sells stuff. It’s more useful for getting exposure, establishing trust, and building your brand.
Study after study has shown that native advertising is more effective than traditional digital marketing methods.
Data and Native Marketing
Image from: Business Insider
Some statistics from the Content Marketing Institute on how marketers perceive native advertising.
53% say it is extremely or very effective
90% agree that it can be used to build audiences
88% agree that it can be used to drive an action
85% agree that it offers valuable content to the reader and can be used to promote content marketing efforts
It doesn’t end at perception. Marketers are using native advertising for:
Brand awareness (63%)
Target/retarget customers in the sales funnel (41%)
Long shelf life (39%)
Building a subscriber base (39%)
Producing deeper brand engagement (39%)
Generating leads (39%)
Reach targeted audiences across trusted channels (34%)
Why are marketers and businesses choosing native advertising over other forms of digital marketing?
It turns out; they have five compelling reasons.
Why Native Advertising Rocks
Contextual information, superior user experience, and value for money are primary reasons businesses are hopping on the native advertising bandwagon.
Superior User Experience
Your audiences consume more content from their mobile devices than desktops. Banner ads and some other forms of digital marketing are even more annoying on smartphones than desktops because those ads disrupt user experience. In contrast, native advertising is delivered in stream. It is like those ads you see in your Facebook or Twitter feed. You notice them, but they do not scream at you.
Contextual Information
Do you sell books? A native ad on the New Yorker, Granta, or another literary magazine can propel your sales. Those websites have a large audience of book readers. Reaching out to them, when they are in a mood for reading, will make them more susceptible to persuasion.
Let’s take another case, and assume that you are a plumber in Santa Cruz. Now, if the Santa Cruz Sentinel, or another local news website, publishes an article on plumbing, you can ask Foxxr to write one related article for you and place it natively on the local website.
Pay to Play
Writing useful and engaging blogs is not enough. In a world where two million blog posts are published every day, you need to put in an effort to reach out to your audiences. Going native is one of the fastest and most powerful ways to announce your content. You pay for a guaranteed audience.
Native Advertising Works
These numbers from AdWeek will convince you:
While the CTR on display ads is a paltry 0.19 percent, native advertising can propel it to a whopping 8 percent
57 percent of millennials are willing to check out sponsored online content, as long as it’s interesting
Viewers spend as much time scanning native ads, as editorial content. Compare 1.2 seconds for editorial content against one second for native ads
Native advertising can increase brand recognition up to 82 percent
Your Competitors are Going Native
With 90 percent of publishers offering opportunities for native ads, native advertising in the United States is projected to grow from $4.7 billion in 2013 to $21 billion by 2018. That’s huge. Your competitors are investing in native advertising. You cannot afford to be left behind.
Takeaway
The Internet has evolved in the past 25 years, so have the expectations of your customers. Old forms of digital advertising are not as effective as they were a few years ago. To engage consumers in 2017 and beyond, businesses need to adapt. Native advertising is one of the most profitable tools you can include in your digital marketing strategy. It doesn’t annoy consumers, millennials are more willing to engage with it, and it builds brand like few other digital marketing methods can.

that 1000-word report
According to the Oxford Dictionary, family can be defined as “a group consisting of two parents and their children living together as a unit” or “all the descendants of a common ancestor”. The first definition happens to also be the definition for “nuclear family”, which is what comes to mind when “family” is mentioned. The second definition leads us to what we call “extended family”, inclusive of all our relatives.
However, family is another one of those concepts that many people have a different perspective on. Some think it is determined biologically, some think it is defined by living together under the same roof. Adopted children and their foster parents can be a family. Biological parents and children separated by obligations like work and school are still a family. Domestic workers, or even pets, can be considered family by those who grow up with them.
One of the more debatable aspects would be whether friends can be considered family. In East Asian cultures like Chinese and Korean, “brotherhood” and “sisterhood” is somewhat interchangeable with “close friendship”. This could have something to do with the implications of the words “friends” and “family” – friends can come and go, but family never changes. Your family is expected to be there for you no matter the circumstances. Thus, it is not uncommon to see males calling their close, loyal friends “brothers” even if they have no familial relation. In the past, there have even been many instances of sworn brotherhood recorded in historical books.
I am personally not a fan of definitions, so as long as someone considers a group of people to be their family, then they can be family. There is no right or wrong, as a concept that concerns something as ambiguous as relationships between people cannot be set in stone. The only criterion is that they should always be there, regardless of circumstances.
Home is also something closely related to family. Simply put, home is where family is. It is akin to having a location tag for photos on social media platforms today. Family’s location is home.
Having that in mind, I sourced for appropriate photos to upload. Instead of a chronological approach, I have decided to go with the different “categories” of family as discussed above.
As far as possible, I tried to include old film photos as those are the ones that cannot be easily accessed from anywhere. Digital photos can be easily sent, uploaded and downloaded over the internet. By scanning the film photos, it creates a digital copy of it that can be easily shared with others. In the case of family photos, members of the family who live away from home can then also access the photos.
When thinking about traditional family portraits, I decided to put my family photo beside my mother’s family photo just to show the contrast. My mother’s family photo was taken when colour film photography was available but not very affordable, since her family was relatively not so well-off. The family did not own a personal camera, so the only way to take a family photo was to go to a studio, which explains why they were dressed up nicely.
On the other hand, my own family photo was taken using a film camera in the last years of film photography being common. We do have several more family photos taken with a digital camera, but as mentioned, I tried my best to look for film photos. By then, personal cameras were more commonplace, so there was no need to visit a studio specially just to take a family photo.
However, something I noticed was that no matter in the past or present, family photos are usually only taken during special occasions like Chinese New Year, birthdays, graduation, or overseas trips. It is rare to find a family photo taken on a normal day with no major event. In fact, this also applies to photos taken with friends, colleagues, or any other people. Photos are usually taken to keep a record of something, and people are generally not interested in keeping records of mundane daily life. It is only when once in a lifetime, rare or happy occasions occur that people feel the desire to have a photo taken together. This is contrasted to taking selfies, for example. Taking selfies is less intimidating as it feels more casual and free than having someone to help take a photo. Hence, family photos have a more formal and important connotation to them.
For the photos with friends, I deliberately chose photos with the funkiest poses to show the contrast with traditional family photos that tend to be prim and proper. Friends typically do more fun and exciting things together as compared to biological family. Definitely there are exceptions, but this is pertaining to my own personal experience.
For the home photos, I thought it would be a good idea to juxtapose the 1998 photo with the 2017 photo, taken at a similar angle. It can illustrate the fact that some things change and evolve over time, but some things remain constant. The same thing applies to family as well. People age with time, gain experience, change their mindsets, and many other things. Family relations, however, are not easily changed once established. They will not change, in fact, unless some drastic events happen like divorce.
Besides that, we can also observe the change in photography. Film cameras do not have automatic white balance or automatic exposure settings. The photo was taken with flash, but that would not have been necessary if taken today. Because of the flash, the foreground is overexposed while the background is underexposed. With any phone camera today, the ceiling light would have been bright enough for an image to be captured without flash. We can also see that films are prone to damage, causing the purplish-blue tint in the photo.
It was a good experience thinking about family and how to visually represent it.

A New Year (2017)!
A much belated Happy New Year is in order!  I am overdue a year in review post.
How did I do?
My spending on indies in 2015 was a total of $705, which … I suppose isn't terrible until you understand that I had started collecting officially in, let's say, August of 2015. I placed two orders early that year, one in January and one in July, and after August is when my purchases began piling up. So $700 in four months was a lot to me. I thought I should try to do better and budget for 2016. My excuse for 2015 was that I was just getting into the hobby and so I'd gone a little crazy purchasing from new shops and generally exploring what it is I like.
2016 has come and gone, as you know!
I am perhaps a little sad and sheepish to admit that my total spent for 2016 was $1594.
If you take that number from 2015 and double it, giving me the rest of the year, I potentially did better in 2016 than I would have in 2015 had I been more into perfume. However, that's just a flimsy excuse and I know it.
What happened in 2016?!
I think my reasons are this:
I had a lot of free time until July. Working from home allowed me the opportunity to review fragrances and monitor social media for rare bottles, other people's reviews, and generally have exposure to the hypebeasting in the perfume world. If you think that people who are crazy about indie perfumes don't hypebeast, then you're dead wrong.
I was on the BPAL forums quite a lot, trolling the sale threads. Oh, and I also joined many of my favorite companies' Facebook sales threads. Again… constant exposure.
I became comfortable with blind buying. This is probably the single biggest reason why my money just flew out the window. Instead of taking careful time to research, try samples, and then make educated purchases, I instead took chances on many things, including:
Arcana - Vanilla Craves Bread, Surf, Holy Terror, Phoebus
Sixteen92 - Supercell
NAVA - Crystalline, Carnival Arcane, and Ember Vanilla
BPAL - Movie Night, Trick or Treat, The Worst Pillow, Miskatonic University, Vampire Night at the Movies, Tag-Upon-Avon, The Serpentine, Manuscript, Streets of Detroit
Solstice Scents - Chiffon, Outpost, Attic, Coquina, Sun-Warmed Honey, Maine Moon, Blossom Jam Teacakes, High Desert, Sandalwood Vanilla, Russian Caravan, Travelers, The Sages Anathemum, Witch's Cottage, Spellbound Woods, Dellamorte
Darling Clandestine - Coma Cluster
I convinced myself that I really need to collect as many 10ml Solstice Scents rollers as I can. Unfortunately, this month in 2017, my heart still leaps when I see any 10mls advertised on the Facebook forums or in sale threads, but… a) I have many of those fragrances already, and b) I am slightly more careful and picky about Solstice Scents now. So…win/win? I have discovered, at the very least, that I am not a fan of SS's maple or chai notes, and I cannot do spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, etc. This cuts out quite a few tried-and-true fragrances. I can talk more about that in the next  part of this post, below.
I failed to set myself a budget. I have been following threads off of Reddit's Makeup Rehab, which helps people who have a spending problem (essentially) deal with it. Since starting a new job in July, my constant need to be on top of new releases has faded a bit. I simply do not have time to buy everything under the sun, and so I suppose my obsession with buying everything has quieted (I would like to think so, at least). I see being more careful in 2017.
I did not sell as much as I thought I would. I promised myself I would destash at the same rate I acquired things, but who am I kidding? I did not do that. After a certain point (when I started my new job in July), I did not have time to keep reviewing and culling my hauls down to the essentials. So my unreviewed items piled up, and I didn't want to just sniff them and let them go.
All that said, what am I doing this year to change all this?
Well, for one thing like I said above, I do not have time to constantly troll forums. The pain and fear of missing out (FOMO, right?) is lessening as time goes by. Plus, I am about to start school again and will have even less time for the hobby. Spending time away from the constant pull of the retail aspect should allow me to just enjoy what I have and make headway in reviewing items.
Next, I will make purchases. I think this will serve to relieve some of the built up pressure of wanting more things. But I am more careful with the purchases I have planned, partly because my financial goals have solidified in other directions (retirement, trips, other purchases), and partly because I know a lot more about the available shops. For instance, I know that NAVA isn't really working for me and so I do not lust after their fragrances; Arcana does work but there is a lot of overlap in releases; and BPAL is less than 50/50, and many bottles can be found easily later on so there's no need to freak out when a new release drops. For other companies I have purchased from in the past, occasionally I have learned of some drama or a marketing ploy that has turned me off. That solves the problem of whether to buy from them. Others simply are not making fragrances that work for me, or that I do not already have from a much-loved brand. In that case (like NAVA), there are no hard feelings. I tried them and preferred something else. That's just the journey.
