#OTD in 1949 – The Republic of Ireland withdraws from the British Commonwealth. The British Parliament recognises the declaration but asserts sovereignty over the six northern counties.
The withdrawal of the twenty-six counties from the British Commonwealth is recognised officially by Britain, thereby, becoming the independent Republic of Ireland. The Ireland Act 1949 passed by the House of Commons recognised the withdrawal. Éamon de Valera had introduced his Constitution (Bunreacht na hÉireann) in 1937, the Irish Free State, or Éire as it was renamed, was well-nigh an…

Ireland and the Holocaust
On May 2,1945 Taoiseach(prime minister) Éamon de Valera expressed condolences to the German ambassador on the death of Adolf Hitler. This was criticised nationally and internationally.Angela D Walsh, with an address at East 44th Street, New York, wrote to de Valera the day after: “I am horrified, ashamed, humiliated . . . You, who are the head of a Catholic country, have now shown allegiance to a…

One of my favourite Gamer Names was "Gaming de Valera" in reference to Éamon de Valera, one of the lead figures in the Irish fight for independence. Other highlights include "Redditsucks", JavaScript, and "Kitty Kittykittykitty". I have a lot of screenshots...
Yesterday my friend Kat and I kept getting queued up against someone named King James in "Splatoon 3" and we could not stop laughing about it. Look over there!! That's the guy from Bible!! Let's attack him with windshield wipers!!

Btw I cleaned my entire bedroom yesterday entirely because I bought a biography of Éamon De Valera recently and it was lying on my desk for a few days because due to my books being alphabatised every time I get a new one I have to be sure that every single book is on the shelf before I put the new one on there so that no books are left with no proper spot to go into (aware that this is a needlessly complicated system btw) and I didn't feel like finding every single book to put them away yet so every time I went up to my bedroom and looked at my desk which is right in my line of sight from the door I would get jumpscared by a picture of Éamon De Valera and it got to the point where it felt like psychological warfare and had to be stopped by any means necessary including doing a deep clean of my bedroom to find every single book I own

Me: so, pretty much the entire government have been exposed as being landlords in their free time, and no-one's doing shit about it, even though this presents a clear conflict of interests when it comes to doing anything about the housing crisis. Our homeless population is rising and no-one's doing shit about it, which has lead to a lot of emigration in the classes who can afford it, and now that's kind of a running joke after what happened during the fammine. Actually, there's a lot of similarities because we're still paying rent to the english for the land many of our government buildings stand on and we're all kinds thinking that maybe James connolly was right. What do you think?
Éamon de valera: you let the gays do what!? First in the world to legalise it by referendum!? That's not why i put that clause in there! This is not the Ireland I fell in love with! And what do you mean divorce is legal now!? Another referendum!? Buíochas le Dia, this is madness!

“Of course I wrote most of the Constitution myself. I remember hesitating for a long time over the US presidential system. But it wouldn't have done - we were too trained in English democracy to sit down under a dictatorship which is what the American system really is.” - Éamon de Valera (1882-1975), former President and Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of Ireland.

Moore Family Timeline : Part 1
Official Family timeline leading up to where the story for my WIP project would begin. Did this as a reference, but also because I was bored and for the sheer love of creating lore. More still to come!
Characters Mentioned in this part: Séamus and Lidia
Content Warning: War mentions, this is historical fiction, after all.
Séamus Tag || Lidia Tag || Their Shared Intro Post
For reference: The "Current Date" at the begin of our story is December 18th, 2021
September 4th, 1939 - Éamon de Valera passes the Emergency Powers Act, officially declaring Ireland’s neutrality during WWII shortly after Germany’s invasion of Poland.
June 10th, 1940 – Mussolini declares war in France, officially entering Italy into WWII
July 4th, 1940 - Éamon de Valera rejects the British proposal to end the Partition of Ireland in exchange for Ireland’s entry in the war as their Ally, upholding Ireland’s neutrality throughout the war.
July 9th, 1940 – The Battle of Punta Stilo, between Italy, Britian and Australian naval units leads the Rossi family— who were in quiet opposition to their government’s actions— to consider leaving their homeland of Calabria for the safety of their growing family, but to where exactly?
September 27th, 1940 - Lidia Rossi is Born; her father contacts a friend in the US soon after, pleading for emigration assistance.
November 30th, 1941 - Séamus O’Hara is Born; Due to Ireland’s reliance in British imports, and mutual attacks on Irish import ships from both Ally and Axis navies, the O’Hara’s —a family of shepherds— is stuck rationing their meals for the first few years leading up to and after of Séamus’ birth. Séa’s ma often bemoans this fact as being why he turned out “so short and weedy.”
December 7th, 1941 – The Attack on Pearl Harbor leads to the US entering the war the next day. Following the war declaration, the US began arresting Japanese, German, and Italian immigrants, and naturalized citizens alike, placing them in internment camps across much of the west coast. The Rossi family decides to take a risk and begins the process of moving to the East coast in light of these events.
March 14th, 1942 - Lidia Rossi and her family emigrate to Chicago, IL, with the help of a family friend’s sponsorship. The family lives alongside their sponsor and helps run their small grocery shop for the community.
October 12th, 1942 – Restrictions placed on Italian Americans marking them as "enemy aliens" at the time of internment, were lifted on this Columbus Day by President Franklin Roosevelt in an effort to win back Italian favor to the US government. (Note: Columbus was definitely a choice. A very American one. Sure says a lot, huh.)
February 1st, 1943 – Lidia’s mother decides to utilize her embroidery skills at a nearby garments factory to earn extra money for her family; the work conditions are terrible, but she has very little choice as a first time worker with limited English.
September 8th, 1943 – The last of the Italian Interment prisoners were released on this day, following the official surrender of Italian forces to the Allies.
September 2nd, 1945 – World War II ends.
May 10th, 1950 - Lidia begins developing an interest in history and current events while listening to family and community members chitchatting while they worked.
April 6th, 1951 - Séamus begins his carpentry apprenticeship at the age of ten.
June 20th, 1952 - At 11, Séamus develops a friendship with the local midwife, named Dáirine, an “old maid” whose stories and wisdom helped to shape his overall world view while growing up. In hindsight, he's pretty sure she was a lesbian, and often wonders if maybe that's why he related so strongly with her.
August 4th, 1953 – Much too excited for the new school year, 12 year old Lidia begins to hone her writing skills independently, choosing to spend the last of her summer vacation time at her local library, reading whatever books struck her fancy, as well as browsing through old newspapers on the library’s microfiche system.
September 27th, 1954 – Lidia celebrates her 14th birthday with family, meanwhile on this same day, at 13, Séamus— having grown bored with his woodworking— begins to question what else is out there in the world. He briefly considered quitting his apprenticeship to join that of a local stone mason, but then he remembered that stone tends to weigh more than lumber, and that cutting large trees down to a manageable size was much easier with a simple rip saw than stone is with a hammer and chisel, so he quickly backpedaled on that bright idea. He would simply continue to admire the fine work of the masons from afar. Keep up the grand work, lads!

#OTD in 1916 – The Pivotal Irish Insurrection against British Rule in Ireland Commences.
The Easter Rising of 1916 had little chance of success (which its leaders knew) and initially had limited support from the Irish population, but a series of major mis-steps by British authorities lit a fuse that ultimately forced Britain to withdraw from 26 counties just six years later. Timeline: At noon, Pádraig Pearse reads the Proclamation of the Irish Republic outside the General Post Office…

MAINIE JELLETT (1897-1944)
Compositions 1936
Composition 1936 was executed thirteen years after Mainie Jellett first exposed art audiences in Ireland to abstraction at the Society of Dublin Painters exhibition in autumn of 1923. It was widely condemned by critics at that time. This sizable oil on canvas example is characteristic of her style in the 1930s when she had moved away from the pure abstraction of the 1920s towards the semi-abstract figurative style seen here. Although the title does not indicate a religious subject matter, elements of the composition - the central figure/s flanked harmoniously upper left and right by similar shapes and radiating line and colour - echo themes such as the crucifixion or the Madonna and child. Jellett and her friend, fellow artist Evie Hone, were both deeply religious people and the inclusion of this very familiar narrative in their oeuvre aided Irish audiences in their interpretation of this new visual language. By the end of the 1930s Jellett and her contemporaries had succeeded in making Modernism not only palatable to Irish audiences but relevant to the establishment which, under Éamon de Valera, understood the importance of being seen to be 'Modern'. In 1938 Jellett's work was selected to decorate the Irish Pavilion at the Glasgow World Fair and the following year in New York alongside Hone. Composition 1936 was painted just before this watershed moment in Jellet's career and in Irish art history.

Ireland's government will shed no tears when Putin joins Stalin and Hitler in Hell. That's according to Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar. 🇮🇪
Ireland is unlikely to express condolences in the event of the death of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Prime Minister of the country, Leo Varadkar, stated this in an interview with the Independent. In addition, Varadkar does not believe the Irish delegation will attend Putin’s funeral. The Irish government followed a strict policy of neutrality throughout the Second World War, the Independent writes. However, when then-Foreign Minister Éamon de Valera expressed condolences on Hitler’s death in 1945, it caused outrage in the international community. This event caused significant reputational damage to the minister and the state and is therefore considered an essential moment in the history of Irish neutrality. During his visit to Kyiv on July 19, Varadkar said that Ireland would be with Ukraine as long as needed. The country’s prime minister also announced the allocation of millions of euros for humanitarian aid.
Not many people will miss Putin. Maybe Russian oligarchs and Putin's lickspittle subordinates in the Kremlin will pause for a moment before beginning to scramble for power themselves.
If there's any major public reaction to Putin's demise, it will probably be celebration like when Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 election.

I look forward to Armando Iannucci doing a sequel to The Death of Stalin called The Death of Putin.
