Chapter 1 - Footsteps of Fate (Section 1)
"I bought medicine just in case, and I'm good on dried meat and cheese, too. Looks like I didn't forget anything!" Lyn ascertained all of the goods she had purchased, bundled them up inside her bag, and slipped the bag's straps around her shoulders.
She was in Bulgar, Sacae's capital city.
It was the largest city in all of Sacae, and was full of not only people who lived in Sacae, but even merchants visiting from the neighboring countries of Bern, Lycia, and Ilia. There were also many people passing through the area, and stalls lined the streets, their storefronts filled with goods of all kinds.
Lyn had come to Bulgar to buy rations, medicine, and other supplies she would need on her journey.
The day after she defeated the bandits, she began taking the first step towards fulfilling her vow.
"I will avenge Father and Mother! But first, I must get stronger!"
The events of the day before made her realize she'd reached the limits of her training she could achieve on her own, and decide to hone her skills on a journey across all the countries of Elibe.
The settlement of the Lorca tribe where Lyn lived had been attacked six months ago by the Taliver Mountain bandits, infamous for being the cruelest and most barbaric band of bandits alive, and Lyn's parents both lost their lives. The bandits spared not even the women and children, slaughtering everyone who stood in their way. They were not a group of humans, but beasts. After they were gone, all they left behind was pain and hatred.
Lyn's father had been the Lorca's chieftain, so with him gone, those left all scattered in different directions. Normally, when a chieftain died, one of their children would become the new chieftain, but not a single person would live under a female chieftain, much less one who was still just a fifteen-year-old girl.
And that meant that the Lorca Tribe was completely destroyed. It was clear that the outcome for Lyn would be to vow revenge.
She could never, ever forgive the bandits who killed her mother, father, and most of her tribe.
And so she decided to live alone within the remains of her tribe's settlement and continue training her swordsmanship skills.
Though yesterday, when the bandits came to the settlement not knowing someone was there, and she fought them and only somehow managed to win, it made her realize her own inexperience.
She felt that if she did not fight and gain more real battle experience, then she would be the person killed when she attempted to take revenge. And so, she decided to travel the continent and train her combat skills.
“Alright, I have everything I need for my journey! ...Now I’d like to say it’s time to go, but first, I have to decide where to…”
As she walked along, Lyn's mind raced.
Lyn was born in Sacae, and never once left it in her entire life. She had asked her parents and those in her tribe about the other countries, but she didn’t remember any of the details. If she had to say one thing she knew for sure, it was something about Ilia, the country located north of Sacae: Ilia was a confederation made up of armies of knights based within several castles.
Positioned in northern Elibe’s mountain range, its lands were all brutally cold and unfit for farming, so the people made their living by working in other countries as mercenaries. Ilian mercenaries were known for their strength, but also their loyalty to their employer.
One of her friends was someone from Ilia, and she remembered well hearing all about her homeland from her.
“A place like that has to have a lot of really strong people there! Oh, but the strongest of them will probably be out working as mercenaries… Well, still, it might be best to go visit her before truly starting my journey.”
As she walked and a memory of her friend’s face flashed through her mind, someone jumped in front of her.
“Oh my! A beautiful woman has appeared before me!”
“Huh?”
The sudden voice surprised Lyn. She stopped and eyed the man blocking her path warily.
He looked to be in his early twenties. Judging by his young age, well-crafted suit of green armor, and bay horse, he seemed to be a knight.
“Please wait, beautiful miss! Would you tell me your name, if you don’t mind? And would you like a cup of tea?”
“...What country are you a knight of?”
“Why, thank you for asking! I am a knight of Lycia. My homeland is Caelin, where the most passionate men in all of Elibe reside!”
“Are you sure it isn’t ‘the stupidest men in all of Elibe?’” Lyn spared nothing in her cold words towards the knight in front of her. As a serious and honest person by nature, she cared not for such superficial types of people, and so she naturally found such talk annoying as well.
“Ouch… But you are stunning even when so cold.” The knight was not fazed by Lyn’s harsh words, rather, he tried all the harder to get her to talk to him.
“I wasn’t joking. I cannot afford to spend any time with you.”
“Ah! Please wait…”
With a clearly displeased look on her face, Lyn started to walk around him, but the knight persistently tried to stop her.
Not even a moment later...
“Sain! That’s enough!!”
At the sound of the sharp shout that came from behind him, Sain turned around.
There stood another young knight, this one dressed in dark red armor. In contrast to the frivolous Sain, he had an honest and calm air about him.
“Oh, Kent! My partner! What’s wrong? Why the terrified expression?”
The partner raised his shoulders and glared at Sain. “If you would be serious, then I would treat you more normally! Sain, we have not yet completed our duty!!”
“I know that! But to not talk to such a beautiful woman would go against courtesy, would it not?”
“What courtesy?!”
“Excuse me! I don’t care either way, so open the road! Your horses are blocking my path, and I cannot pass.” Expressing that she could not afford to waste any more time on the two knights, Lyn cut into their conversation.
Kent had also brought his horse along with him. The combination of two knights and two horses created a wall in front of her, blocking her path.
“I apologize. I’ll move him straight away…” Kent bowed his head and immediately opened the road between him and Sain.
Because he did exactly as she'd asked him to, Lyn’s hardened expression softened. “Thank you. You seem to be a good person.”
“Huh!?” This was the moment when Kent got a good look at her face for the first time. Something seemed to surprise him, as he stared at her face for a long moment with his eyes opened wide. “...I’m sorry, but I feel as if we have met somewhere before…”
“What?”
“Hey! No fair, Kent! I was the one who talked to her first!!” Sain shouted.
Lyn scoffed. "Are there no decent men among the Lycian knights!? You're both so creepy!"
All because Sain went too far with that one sentence, Lyn misunderstood Kent, and thought he was trying to flirt with her too.
Her face hardened once again in an instant.
She pushed between them through the opening in the road that Kent had created, and hurried along.
"Wait! That's not what I meant…"
She heard Kent's voice try to stop her, but she of course did not slow her pace. Before long, she disappeared within a crowd of other people walking through Bulgar.
After Lyn had raced off, Kent glared at his partner with a harsh gaze. "............Sain… You fool!"
"Huh? That's not what you meant?
"Don't lump me in with you! But enough about that, we have to chase after her. She might be…"
Before he even finished his sentence, Kent took his horse and galloped off in the direction Lyn walked in.
"No way… She's our 'duty'? You're kidding, right? Hey!!"
Sain also followed after her in a panic.

Chapter 1 - Footsteps of Fate (Section 2)
The suspicion that she was being watched was gradually growing stronger and stronger within Lyn.
Ever since she had reached the outskirts of Bulgar, she felt the distinct feeling that she was being watched by someone.
At first, she thought that perhaps the knights from before were following her. But the moment she exited Bulgar and started down a small road within the surrounding forest and without a person around, the feeling she felt from behind her clearly changed to one of murderous intent.
She put a hand on the hilt of her sword around her waist and turned around.
There, she saw a man who appeared to be a bandit out of the corner of her eye, running towards her. Sensing that she was in danger, she tried to run, but immediately gave up on doing so. She was curious about what business a bandit like him could possibly have with her.
'It's just one person. If it comes down to a fight, then I can handle him.'
She shifted into a battle stance that did not leave her open, and waited for him to approach her. The bandit saw that she wasn't trying to flee, and stopped running, then showed her a glimpse of his axe as he approached her.
One could tell from his facial expressions that he looked like the worst kind of person, and his face twisted into a crude smile as he spoke, "Geh he, geh he he he! What a cute girlie you are. You're Lyndis, right?"
"What!? ...Who are you!?"
Lyn was shocked to hear him suddenly say her true, full name. Even those of her tribe had not called her by it. Only her parents… Yet this bandit standing right in front of her knew it.
He ignored Lyn's question and flashed a glimpse of his dark gray axe once more. "...What a waste! What a waste this is gonna be… But it's all for money! Now die! Come on out, boys!!"
Three more bandits responded to his call and appeared from behind Lyn.
While she had been preoccupied with the one bandit chasing her down from behind, the remaining three had slipped through the forest and gotten past her.
"Dammit! But I should be able to handle this many alone…"
She had a total of four opponents. The same number of bandits as yesterday.
But this scenario too much for her, who struggled to take on two bandits at once. With that thought in her mind, she regretted her carelessness that had made her put her guard down and lose awareness of her surroundings.
"...But I have no other choice!!"
Regretting what she had or hadn't done wasn't going to make her current situation any better.
The moment she braced herself to fight and unsheathed her sword, a familiar voice echoed through the air.
"AAAHHHHHHH! WE FOUND YOUUUU!!"
"Huh!?"
"What!?"
Lyn and the bandits all turned towards the source of the voice at once, to see the two knights she met earlier rushing towards her on their horses.
"Th-They followed me…"
Sain brought his horse to a sudden stop in front of Lyn, pointed the lance he was holding at the bandits, and said, "Hey, you hooligans!! What business do you have with this lady?!'
"You're the knights I met earlier!"
"We'll talk later. ...It appears that these men intend to harm you. If so, then we shall fight them." Kent said, withdrawing his sword as he spoke.
Sain readied his lance once more. "Ah, please stand down. We'll take care of these ruffians in a flash!"
Even in this tense situation, Sain was lighthearted in urging her to leave the fight to them.
However, Lyn flat out refused his order. "No way! This is my fight. Don't you two just do whatever you want!"
"Um… say what you will, but you are in trouble." Sain pointed out.
"...I understand how you feel. Please give us your orders. I am Kent, a knight of Lycia. And my partner here is Sain. We will fight following your orders. Do you have any concerns with that plan?"
They would follow Lyn's orders. Meaning that Kent was saying he would fight how Lyn wanted.
Lyn was grateful for his consideration of her wishes. No matter the situation, four vs. one were unfavorable odds. In all honesty, she was very happy to accept the help.
"...No, I don't. I'll give the orders, then! Let's go!" Lyn gave the signal, then immediately turned towards the enemy in front of her and swung her sword at him.
Sain and Kent responded by each turning towards a different bandit.
They were four against three. While they still had the disadvantage in numbers, to compensate for the difference, these were easy opponents for Lyn and the two knights.
'We'll be fine… If I stay calm and watch the enemy's movements, then I won't lose in this fight!'
As Lyn calmly avoided each of the bandit's swings, she was able to stay relaxed and study her foe's movements, unlike the day before. She wasn't alone. Having the knowledge that she had allies gave her mind some space to relax, and it was a huge plus to her, who had a tendency to fight vigorously.
At its core, this was a battle of sword against axe. Axes were heavy and always made their wielder take larger swings, whereas swords were light and had a smaller turning radius. This made swords the worst match-up against them.
Fed up with the fact that none of his attacks were landing, the bandit made a giant swing without thinking about the consequences. That moment was exactly what Lyn had hoped for. She dodged it by the skin of her teeth and rushed towards her opponent’s chest at lightning speed, striking with all of the strength in her body put into that one blow.
“Gah…!” Her sword cut deep into the nape of his neck. The bandit fell over just as Lyn saw Kent defeat his opponent.
Lyn and Kent had been able to take out their foe with great ease, but Sain was struggling slightly.
“Yah! Ha! Hiiiiyah!”
As the bandit used the wide blade of his axe like a shield to defend himself from the repeated thrusts of Sain’s lance, he was looking for a chance to counterattack.
Lances have a much longer reach than swords or axes. On the battlefield, particularly in situations of war between two groups, this was seen as the most important factor about them. The standard soldiers contribute the most to any war, and though they may undergo extensive training, they come from backgrounds as commoners who normally work farms or shops. They are different from knights and those who have fought throughout their entire career, and are not accustomed to combat.
So to those types of fighters on the battlefield, the easiest way to learn how to fight is by wielding lances, a weapon with a long reach. They can attack from a long distance, making them feel more safe in comparison to other weapons, and if they fight with many allies of the same fighting skill, then it gives them an overwhelming advantage.
However, if their opponent slips in the space between their chest and outstretched arm, they are powerless. Their long reach would become their downfall, and the enemy would land a direct hit before they could return to a defensive stance.
Sain knew that fact all too well, and so he repeatedly thrust his lance very quickly in order to avoid creating that opening. However, when he did so, he created a gap in his stance that he did not realize. The moment he thrust his lance, his body moved with it, causing his stance to crumble.
“Take this!!” The moment Sain was vulnerable, the bandit closed the gap between them and attacked immediately.
However, Sain had intended for that to happen. The instant before the bandit’s attack would hit him, he ducked his horse and avoided the attack by a hair. Now that the bandit was left wide open, he stabbed his lance into the bandit’s throat.
After watching the bandit cough up blood and confirming that he was dead, Sain breathed a sigh of relief.
“Sain! You really seemed to be struggling!” Kent ran over.
“No, I just wanted to show off! Though I did overdo it a little bit, didn’t I?” Sain shrugged and answered in a way that aggravated his partner.
“Jeez, you’re always like this…! If you don’t stay alert on the battlefield, you’re going to get yourself killed one day!”
“Oh calm down, Kent. I’ll listen to your lecture later. We have something else we should be doing at the moment, don’t we?”
“Grr…! You better not forget what I said!” Kent shouted, then ran after Lyn.
As he did so, Lyn faced the last remaining bandit.
“Dammit… these knights! Always sticking their noses where they don’t belong…!” He was utterly flustered, as he had not predicted this outcome.
This was supposed to be an easy job.
Take care of a single girl leaving Sacae. That was all they had to do to make far more money than he was used to seeing.
He and his men had talked about using that money to live and just have fun for a while. Yet now...
His men were all dead, and he was living his last moments as well.
"Dammit, dammit, dammit! Why won't you just die?!" The bandit, now cornered, had already lost his ability to make logical decisions.
As if he was trying to shake himself out of a nightmare, he rushed at Lyn and haphazardly swung his axe. The attack was a broad swing that left him wide open.
His attack cut through the air, but it was futile. Lyn closed the gap between them in the blink of an eye. He did not predict this move at all, and it sliced his torso open.
"D-Dammit all… It wasn’t just a girl… at all… Guh!” His death cry was followed by a cough of blood, then his body slowly collapsed on the ground.
Lyn took one cold glance at him, then sheathed her sword and walked over to the two knights.“So… knights of Lycia. You were going to tell me your story, right?”
They both dismounted their horses and approached Lyn, then Kent began to speak. “Yes. We are from Caelin of Lycia, here to meet someone.”
“Lycia… that is the country past the southwestern mountains, right?” Lyn, who had never left Sacae, only knew roughly where each country was located.
Kent nodded, confirming that her knowledge was correct. “Yes, it is. We are messengers to Lady Madelyn, who eloped with a young nomad sixteen years ago.”
“...Madelyn?”
"She is the only daughter of our lord, Marquess Hausen of Caelin. Having not heard word from or about her in such a long time, he gave up, thinking that she had passed away."
Sain continued the explanation from there. "But this year, he received his very first letter from Lady Madelyn! 'I am living happily on the plains of Sacae as a family of three.' That made him very happy, and when he read 'You have a fifteen year old granddaughter. You became a grandfather without even realizing it!' he smiled so happily. Her name, “Lyndis,” is that of his wife, who passed away very young.”
“Lyndis…"
“The marquess has forgotten everything that happened in the past, and wishes to do whatever it takes to see his daughter and her family even just once. So that is why we came here. But…”
“We learned when we arrived in Bulgar several days ago that Lady Madelyn had passed shortly after writing the letter. ...Yet one hope remained, as her daughter was still alive. We heard that she was living on the plains alone as the sole survivor, and…” Kent cut his words short there, pausing to look straight at her once more. “I knew the moment I saw you that you are Lady Lyndis.”
“...Why did you think that?”
“...You look very much like the late Lady Madelyn.”
Lyn gasped. “You knew my mother?!”
“I never saw her with my own eyes, but I have seen her portrait in Caelin Castle countless times.”
“I was called “Lyn” by my tribe… But… when it was just my father, my mother, and I during our times together as a family, they called me 'Lyndis.' Somehow, I feel so strange. I thought I was already all alone, but I have a grandfather… I thought I would never be called 'Lyndis' ever again…” Lyn said, looking down towards the ground.
Lyndis was not a name that the people of Sacae were used to hearing. The names given to the nomads of Sacae were usually very short, so everyone referred to her by a nickname, Lyn. Only her parents had called her Lyndis, so to hear the name she had not heard in so long made her remember what her parents had looked like, and sent a flood of emotions over her.
Lyn imagined what might have made her mother write a letter after sixteen long years.
She'd given birth to Lyn, and as Lyn grew, it likely made her worry more and more about her father, all alone in their homeland. As the years passed and she raised her daughter, she came to understand how parents feel for their children. And when that happened, she must have thought about her father, without his only daughter by his side, and how lonely he felt. So the least she could do, she thought, was to tell him where she was and that he has a granddaughter.
Before the three even realized it, the sun had started to set. The sunlight, gradually turning red, shone down on them.
Lyn suddenly remembered a certain something, and her eyes widened. “...Oh no! That bandit called me ‘Lyndis!!’”
“What!? It couldn’t be…” Kent gasped.
“So that would mean he was working for Lord Lundgren… wouldn’t it?”
The sudden mention of the name that slipped out of Sain’s mouth made Lyn ask, “Lundgren? Who is that?”
“Lord Hausen’s younger brother. Because no one thought that Lady Madelyn would ever return, in case that indeed held true, Lord Lundgren was named the next person in line to inherit the title of marquess."
“Meaning that so long as you live, you will be in your uncle’s way.” Kent concluded their explanation.
“But… I have no interest in inheriting such a title!”
She was happy that her grandfather was alive. But the idea of inheriting any title, property, or wealth was another story.
Lyn only cared about her one remaining family member. She thought nothing of anything else.
Most of those who live on the Sacae plains as nomads have little greed or lust for power.
This is because they live moving from place to place across the vast plains, and cannot carry any unnecessary belongings with them, nor can they keep livestock or other indicators of wealth. And not only that, but they also looked down on those who possessed excess wealth. They did not even have a concept of inheritance.
Despite their appearance, the plains had a harsh climate. In the winter, the temperature dropped so low that the cold was often considered some of the most extreme across Elibe, drastically reducing the amount of potential pasture for livestock. In the spring, the violent winds were so strong that both livestock and supplies could easily blow far away.
To be able to survive such a cruel climate, everyone in each tribe unified like large families around their chief, and had to help one another out. And that lifestyle made even the chief live no differently from everyone else in the tribe. On the contrary, the chief was actually much busier than the rest of the tribe, as they had to pay close attention to be sure that everyone could stay safe.
And above all, everything they were able to obtain on the plains was a blessing from Father Sky and Mother Earth. When they passed away, it meant that they were returning to the land of Father Sky and Mother Earth… For the people of Sacae, that shared way of thinking was their way of life.
Those reasons were all why she had no need for excessive things like a noble title.
“Unfortunately… he is not the type of person who will believe that. He will likely continue to relentlessly target your life.”
The nobles of Lycia had no way of knowing Sacae’s unique philosophies. Sain's words were proof of that.
“...What should I do?”
“Come with us to Caelin. If you continue on as you are now, you will be in danger…"
Lyn nodded in response to Kent's words. "...I have no other options. Alright, I will go to Caelin."
She wanted to see the grandfather that she had never met before.
And, in regards to the marquess title, if she told her uncle that she had no interest in inheriting it, he might stop interfering with her life.
In order to solve the problems that she was suddenly embroiled in; she had to go talk to him directly.
That was what Lyn said to herself as she imagined what her grandfather might look like.
