the only experiences i’ve had with pokemon growing up are when, in elementary school, i and a couple of other kids were trying to trade the cards but we had no idea what standards to trade them by so we were sort of just shuffling them around and one vivid scene in which ash(?) and pikachu are in a canyon and it sort of pans to show team rocket and they’re maybe going to have a stand off.
#vt.talk#oh i watched detective pikachu a while ago so does that count?#and ive seen some stuff on the internet though not muc#anyways i just kinda find it funny how much i know about some popular franchises#like star wars was just the 'i am your father' through memes; my friends arguing about the best watching order; watching one of the movies#i think tfa on a bus ride and honestly that's where i learned the most. like the fact that darth vader was dead and luke and co were old now#and then at disneyworld someone dressed as someone from star wars was talking about padawans or something; oh and obv i knew what#lightsabers were.#naruto i learned about cause the naruto run and i was a bit of an obsessive middle schooler so i had to learn the context of the naruto run#i know nothing about star trek except data's great spock's great and there's a kirk in there?#marvel i used to know nothing about except through my friends but then i watched some movies#and there were various anime i learned about because i used to listen to nightcore and people in the comments would be like#'poor [character whose image was used as the image for the video]' and id be like who tf is character#and figure it out#then usually be like 'damn that was fucked up' before forgetting about it until something triggered the memory#like once i was shelving books in the library and some of them were black butler and i was like 'wait i know this.'#oh and atla i knew nothing about except that i thought it was the same as the avatar movie and i remember seeing the comics around#then there were how to write a good villain/redemption arc posts with azula and zuko respectively#lets see what else.#see if it's a popular book series i will have read at least the first book so those don't count#ig i learned a bit more about some animes through listening to their osts though i don't really care as much about learning then#and then i know the basic gists of a lot of movies. like indiana jones deals with artifacts and adventure#james bond i read the first few books of but wasn't impressed at all#hp i unfortunately read and then decided 'ok' and moved on#and now i can't look back without distaste#oh and i do know a bit about like bleach op and another i think?#oh and i also remember seeing arabic sub of hxh episodes but idk arabic so i didn't click on them#unrelated to everything in this post but i would not survive star wars#i'd see darth vader and just start LAUGHING#i won't be able to run and he'd just kill me

Here’s the link to the latest video in my YouTube series Disabled AND Blessed -- on the Parable of the Banquet
[image description: two light green textured squares, the first of which has white text reading “new video out at queerly christian on youtube!” with a photo of a white person with short brown hair and a blue shirt and more text reading, “Luke 14: disabled persons are the honored guests at God’s table...will abled people still accept the invite?” The second square has white text reading, “Let’s ponder together” and two white thought bubbles with green text. First thought bubble reads, “If our ‘banquet tables’ (faith communities) fail to include the people whom God's banquet will honor, can we claim to represent God’s Kingdom on earth?” and the second reads, “If people we think are “beneath us” or who make us uncomfortable will eat beside us, and may even have better seats…will we still accept the invitation to God’s table?” / end id]
____________
Jesus tells a story about a host whose original guests make excuses not to come. The host then invites persons with disabilities and poor persons to come fill his table. As in Isaiah 56, we find an image of God's community in which disabled persons participate just as they are, without needing to become abled. But there's even more to this little story, once you start unpacking what the various characters might represent and how we can live into the parable today!
Please feel free to share your thoughts, questions, or concerns on this topic; I'd love to chat!

FF8 English-French translarison, part 23: Battle of the Gardens
Welcome back, everyone! We are nearing the end of the CD2 content and beginning one of my favourite parts of the game: the Battle of the Gardens.
Tumblr media
And immediately we’ve got some interesting stuff as the dialogue between Nida and Squall:
In English, Nida asks “The sorceress is with them, huh? So this is going to be the final battle?”. However, French Nida is more assured, stating “The witch is with them. This is going to be the ultimate battle.”
Also, as you may have noticed, we once again have an example of the French version going back and forth between using the words “sorcière” (witch/sorceress),  prêtresse” (priestess) and most confusingly, “nécromancienne” (necromancer) for Edea/Ultimecia. I know the English verison sometimes uses “witch” instead of “sorceress” as well, but the French version really likes to change what it calls them, although it does usually settle on “prêtresse”.
Anyway, back to the dialogue, English Squall replies with “I hope so,” but again the reply is quite different as he says “(yes, for whom?)” and indeed, it’s between parenthesis, implying he’s muttering it to himself, and making it very clear that he fully expects at least one of them to die.
Next, in English, Squall wonders “What should I do first? I have to give orders to everybody. It’s my responsibility.” in the French version, he’s more straightforward, thinking “I have to distribute tasks and give everyone orders.” Gotta say, I do like the way the English version emphasize Squall’s sense of duty a little more.
Tumblr media
Geesh, we’re still on the first screen and we have yet more stuff to cover when it comes to Squall’s orders:
First, in English, Squall is pretty solemn about Seifer being there, as he says “As you may all know, Seifer is with them. I plan to settle everything, once and for all, with this battle.” French Squall is being a lot less cute about it, saying “One of us, Seifer, is fighting on the enemy’s side. Count on me to eliminate this traitor.” DAMN, French Squall ain’t fucking around!
Next, we have a bit of a strange difference in... lore, I guess? In English, Squall orders “1st and 2nd class Sabers” to go in the parking lot. In French, however, he orders the “grenadiers” to do so, which is rather odd for two reasons. First, as far as I’m aware, SeeD doesn’t use grenades (which would seem redundant hen you have magic anyway), and explosives seem to be more Galbadia’s speciality. And second, “grenadiers” as a specific unit isn’t a thing in the French army any more, and is usually associated with Napoleonic times, so that’s a bit of strange reference. Of course, I guess it could be kind of a non-literal term and refer to fire magic specialists.
Tumblr media
Next, while giving orders to protect the quad and main entrance, English Squall splits the students between even and odd ID numbers. In French, it’s a bit more complicated, as he tells the “first year students” to get the quad, and the “candidates” to get to the entrance. I’m guessing “first year students” refers to new SeeD graduates and “candidates” to the ones nearing the end who can apply for the final exam but haven’t graduated yet.
Or maybe it’s kind of the opposite, and “first-year student” means people who just entered the cursus to join SeeD (as opposed to younger students who are getting a general education) and “candidates” are again the ones eligible for the final exam. Not that I really have any evidence backing it up either way. :P
And similarly, instead of telling students with an ID ending with 8 (which id a bit confusing considering he already gave students with even-numbered ID orders) to take care of the junior classmen, in French, they do follow through on the previous orders by having Squall tell the second year students to do so.
Tumblr media
After the girls and Irvine tell Squall Zell is sleeping, English Squall is quite disbelieving an asks them whet they’re talking about. And in French, he’s actually extra snarky by asking “Are you kidding me right now?”.
And after Quistis says it’s their little secret, instead of wondering “... What’s he doing? We don’t have any time!”, he wonders “Are they drunk or something?”. Seriously, French Squall is so done with anyone’s bullshit.
Tumblr media
Here’s one of the more amusing ones. In English, this guy says his status is “Indirect magic operative, level 2″. In French however, he says he’s in charge of... the film club. Now it’s clearly not meant to be a joke, I just find the contrast between the two version funny in this case.
Also, in English, Squall makes him a 1st class MG, as in Major General, presumably, which seems quite a high rank for someone whose background Squall doesn’t know (especially since I’m not even sure that’s how SeeD ranks work but whatever). In French, it seems a bit more plausible as he tells the guy “From now on, you’re the section B lieutenant”.
One thing I do like about the guy being in charge of the film club in the French version is how it shows how suddenly these kids’ lives can change in an instant in this game’s universe. It’s clear that for the most part, education in Balamb Garden is fairly standards, so one minute you could be minding your own business, hanging out with friend, engaging in normal high-school activities when suddenly bam! War gets dumped on you and you gotta adapt or die. Pretty of scary when you think about it.
Tumblr media
There’s also a slight difference with these three guys. In English, the boys are part of the “Fire Platoon”, which make me wonder if it means they use guns (which again seems odd for Balamb Garden, but maybe it’s a thing) and the girl is a medic.
In French, however, one of the boys is explicitly a gunner (so I guess it really IS a thing), the other boy is a “nurse-fireman” (because one of these jobs just isn’t stressful enough on its own apparently) and the girl is a regular nurse.
Either way, I always loved Squall thinking quickly under pressure and making sure everyone has a role. It’s funny, there are many high-ranking (para-)military characters in video games, but it’s the only time I recall one actually acting like a leader.
Tumblr media
The talk with Zell goes pretty much the same in both versions, I just find it funny that in English, Squall goes out of his way to encourage Zell & co by saying “Zell, I’m counting on you. Good luck, everyone.” whereas in French, he is much more laconic, merely saying “Good luck.”
Tumblr media
Probably the smallest difference I’ll mention, but still an interesting one. In English, after the Galbadian forces invade, Squall tells the quad team to watch out. In French, he tells all “BGU Soldiers” to get ready. Both make sense, though I do like Squall giving more specific orders in English a little more. It gives the sense that he’s observing everything from the bridge and uses that to his advantage for tactical decisions.
Tumblr media
Here’s another funny one. After Squall tells Zell to do whatever it takes to rescue Linoa, English Zell replies “Leave it to me!”. In French however, he seems less confident as what he says literally translates to “(Poor me!)” and it’s basically him going “(Oh, boy)”. This is especially funny when coupled with his confident-looking chest pat. I love the moment that imply that Zell is often not nearly as assured as he looks, but he puts on a brave face as to not demoralize his teammates.
Tumblr media
Back in the headmaster’s office, where Kadowaki is once again proving herself to be the best NPC in gaming history by taking charge instead of Cid, there’s another amusing difference. In both versions, she tells Squall that it’s his destiny to fight Seifer, but while she’s pretty straightforward about it in French, I love that in English, she goes “It’s kind of like your destiny to face him”. Yeah, sort of or whatever. Look, just go kick his ass.
Tumblr media
Another Irvine speech, another surprisingly big difference.
English:
Listen... Do me a favor. YOU... go help Rinoa. It may be too late, but don’t give up until you’re CERTAIN that there’s nothing more you can do!
French:
No way you can just leave her like that! Nobody abandons such a pretty girl, as long as there’s really nothing left to do...
By the way, that awkward phrasing at the end (as it should have been “UNTIL there’s really nothing left to do”) is indeed present in the actual text, so don’t blame it on me! And generally speaking I do like the English take on it better, especially as he goes “YOU help Linoa”. It’s like he’s saying “look, you gave the orders, we know what to do, but if YOU don’t rescue her, no-one can”.
And it really goes to show that in spite of the image he wants to give of himself, Irvine is surprisingly thoughtful. He knows Squall won’t be able to forgive himself if he doesn’t try to rescue Linoa, even if someone else rescued her, he’d feel like shit for not going for her.
There’s also a bit of an odd quirk in the English version a bit later, as Quistis says “we’ll clear a path. Once Squall arrives, we’ll move in.” which is a bit weird considering she’s talking to Squall. Even if you want to say she’s speaking to the group as a whole, it’s still a bit strange, especially as she’s still looking right at him. In French, she does address him directly saying “We’ll clear the path. Don’t worry about us.”
Tumblr media
And so we get to Squall’s speech and while it’s very moving, I want you all to picture Linoa dangling off the side of Balamb Garden the whole time. Anyway, the first half of it is actually very similar in both versions. But then things get quite different:
English:
SeeD was formed to fight the sorceress; at least, that’s what I heard. And Garden was created to train SeeDs. So this battle is Garden’s destiny and also our destiny. It’s a grueling battle, and I’m sure you guys are all exhausted. But I don’t want to have any regrets. I don’t want anyone to look back and regret this day. So just this once, I want you guys to give everything you’ve got! For yourselves and for me!
French:
The battle we fight has many things at stake: everyone’s life, of course, but also the future of BGU and our democracy! This is why I ask each of you for one more push, non just for yourselves, but for everyone else. I count on you! I ask you to do your maximum, for you and for others.
Tumblr media
And finally, I don’t know about you, but this is the moment I’ve been looking for. After Squall goes all tsundere on Linoa and claims him saving her was purely professional because they have a contract and it was everybody else’s idea and ti was a coincidence anyway and it’s not like I keep saving you because I like you or anything, so don’t get the wrong idea, baka, we get some small differences at first.
For example, while throwing Zell under the bus, instead of “Zell gave it to me, see? I’ve been holding on to it”, she says “Zell gave it to me. That was nice of him, wasn’t it?”. Rest assure that Squall swears to kill him either way. Also, I really like the animation of Squall’s shoulders tensing up and him rolling his neck while he thinks that. I don’t remember seeingt hat specific animation anywhere else either, so I lvoe that they gave him one for that of all things.
Also also, in both versions, he specifies that it’s his favourite ring, implying he owns many more. Behold Pimp Squall, blowing his cadet allowance on bling. Oh and while in English, he adds “You’d better give it back,” he doesn’t say that in French, which is yet another small detail that makes him come across a bit nicer in the French version.
People also noted that on top of lions in the FF8 universe not resembling our Earth lions, Linoa sounds out the the word like she’s never heard of it before, implying they’re fairly obscure mythical creatures. Well, that doesn’t happen in French and thinking about it, that’s a bit of a shame as that is an interesting subtle bit of lore.
But the question is: does this L I O N of his have a name? Sure does:
Tumblr media
Yep, Griever is known as Cronos in French, tying it back to the time theme. Oddly, it’s lacking an H to really fit, so it might be a reference to the king of Titans as well.
Tumblr media
So in both versions, Linoa says that it’s such an accident that people might think they’re together once she gets a copy of Squall’s ring. But what’ interesting is the specific terms used:
In English, she says “That’d be crazy, huh!? I mean, everyone might, y’know, get the wrong idea about us.”
In French, she says “The problem is that everyone will think we’re together!”
What makes this seemingly small difference have such significance is how it leads to Squall’s reply a bit later as in English, he tells Rinoa “You sound like you want everyone to get the wrong idea.” teasing her a bit while kind of calling her out.
In French however, it take son a whole other meaning as he says “I don’t know if it’s really a problem...”
And this to me really sounds like Squall openly admitting that he does have romantic feelings for Linoa. After all, why else would a guy like him be okay with people spreading rumours about him being with a girl? If nothing else, he’s certainly admitting that he’s comfortable being paired up with her by people and that he’s got some things to work out once the battle is over.
Oh and Linoa’s reaction in each version also speaks volume about what Squall just said. In English, she just vehemently denies being up to anything, going “No-no-no-no-no!”. In French, she seems much more flustered, going “Huh? What... What do you mean?”
Tumblr media
We’ve got one last difference to end on. And once again, it’s quite a meaningful one. It happens as Squall ends yet another rousing speech. In English, it goes like this:
Squall: “We’ve come this far. I guess there no need for me to say anything.”
Rinoa: “We’re still listening. Squall, we want to know how you feel.”
Squall: “I’ll tell you later... After we all get out of this. Let’s go.”
In French, it goes like this (note that Squall uses the pronoun “tu”, showing he’s addressing Linoa specifically):
Squall: My little memories don’t interest you, huh?
Linoa: Of course they do! Tell me what you really think.
Squall: I’ll tell you that, if we’re still alive after this trial. Let’s go!
I find it very interesting that Squall make sit more personal here, by talking to Linoa directly. It’s a good way for him to tall the rest of the orphanage gang that they can’t put the rest of humanity in jeopardy because of their childhood memories.
But really, I like this part in both versions. And in both, you once again have Squall basically admit that he wants to get closer to Linoa. So even if you don’t take it as a love confession, then it certainly shows that he wants to figure out how exactly he feels about her, that he definitely wants their relationship to be more than professional, and that he intends to work out how far he wants it to go. And on top of that, it’s also a good motivator for her to give it all she’s got. “Don’t you die on me, I’ve got stuff to tall you about.”
Hhhaaa, I really enjoyed that one! And I hope you did too. Next time, it’s the second and final battle against Edea, the end of the CD2 content and the beginning of a new battle. In the meantime, feel free to ask questions, either by replying to this post or through my “ask” thing, or to just make comments or add your two cents. I always love to see people’s reactions and their own interpretations of various elements. And it would be really nice if you could give this post a reblog to help spread awareness. I know some people think their own blog is too small for it to matter but I assure you, every reblog helps.
See you around for part 24!

Hi! I rewrote the submission guidelines entirely and changed it a bit! If there’s feedback on things that should / could be fiddled with, please let me know! The new and updated submission guidelines, as well as a changelog, are under the read more!
What’s been removed/changed? ‘No fanmail’ has been set aside into Miscellaneous Caveats at the bottom of the page ‘No questioning kin’ has been removed and set into Miscellaneous Caveats at the bottom of the page. ‘No Callouts’ has been expanded to include concerns with poor modding / adminning / toxic members in various kin groups ‘No troll asks’ has been fully removed ‘No hate speech’ has been expanded to clarify about death threats ‘Removed ‘no invalidating kintypes’ and ‘‘Formerly IDing as fictionkin’ as I’ll just delete those ones. Plus they don’t seem as common as they used to be. 'Expanded upon and clarified with examples some guidelines.
1) Advice / help or kintype / canon calls As this is a high traffic blog, it wouldn’t be conducive to host a conversation about advice or information given. There’s help blogs out there who are more than willing and very experienced in helping out anyone with questions about kinity! Similarly, there are definitely plenty of call blogs out there, even ones specialized to certain AUs, sources, types of media like video games or theatre, and so on. This is our help blog page which contains a fair amount of blogs that advertise assistance or willingness for discussion: http://fictionkinfessions.tumblr.com/help
This is our call blogs page which contains a list of fairly active kin / canon call blogs: http://fictionkinfessions.tumblr.com/seekin 2) About Me pages confessions Please no stating what fictotypes you have. It’s wonderful you know who you were, but that would be better suited to an about page. Otherwise there’d be a wall of confessions that would be ‘I’m Xkin, Ykin with a weird canon, and also therian!’ since there’s so many people who ID as fictionkin on this site alone. 3) Explicit NSFW confessions We would like to keep this as a safe for work, minor and/or sex repulsed persons friendly confession blog. We would like to suggest bringing them to @kinfessionsafterdark or another adult themed kin confession blog. Some NSFW themed confessions are welcome if they are NOT explicit or going into detail. Examples:
These are acceptable and will be tagged with #nsfw issue
‘I really loved Naruto, he’s so sweet and kind in bed ;) ;) ;)’
'I hate that my image search results is just me as a pair of boobs :/’
'a terrible rp partner keeps trying to push me into RPing smut about PIV with kintype and their character is someone who I rly despised in my canon’
4) call outs / complaining about poor or bad admins / members on other blogs, kin groups such as discord, networks, aminos, etc, and so forth. If you have an abuser or manipulator whose actions need pointing out to the rest of the community, I suggest creating a separate side blog for it with plenty of evidence to support your claims. Similarly, if there is a problem with a mod, or group, please bring it to the attention of other mods within that group. That is far more helpful to everyone involved with the situation. 5) hate speech / death threats / rape threats / suicide baiting / etc. what the fuck seriously what the fuck do I have to expla Ok I will. Please no hate speech. That being overly vicious venting at a named person. Unnamed character hate is fine as long as it’s not singling out a particular person or kintype or source. Please no death threats. Don’t state you are going to kill someone. Don’t state you are going to torture, maim, cause serious pain or injury to someone. Please don’t imply or outright claim you are going to rape a person or kintype. Don’t say someone or an entire kintype form a source should commit suicide. Don’t be an ass, is what we’re saying.
Examples: An acceptable confession that will be posted:
I want them to die so bad for what they did to my sweetheart! If I ever get my hands on them in this life I’ll make them hurt so much until their dying breath.
An unacceptable confession that will be deleted:
I’m coming for you Catfish! I’m going to string you up and play with your guts for what you did to me. Then I’m going to track down each of your friends and torture them to death and there is nothing you can do about it! I’ll take my sweet time with Potato!
6) IRL politics Please no references to real life politics in this life time. Such as wanting to punch nazis, wishing physical harm on certain elected politicians; comparing today’s occurrences to historical events that may have occurred Germany or any other European country; just irl politics in general. Also please don’t threaten elected officials. I know that’s already been said but I’m saying it again. 7) Kin Regulations / having a kintype not the concurrent race or ethnicity Please no further ’#kin regulations’ or 'IDing out of race / ethnicity’ themed confessions!  See this post for additional details! http://fictionkinfessions.tumblr.com/post/155260761043/from-january-1st-to-february-28th-2017 Miscellaneous Caveats: please no fan mail confessions, we can’t post them! Please no factkin or factives, theriotypes, otherkintypes and so forth confessions. We only accept fictotypes or fictives. Any kintype from a fictional source is welcome! Please no interest checks, e.g. 'are there are X kintypes out there?’ ‘like this post if you’re from this source pls!’ Please no ‘I might be X???’ kinsidering kinfessions unless you go into detail why or how to feel about that. Kinsidering kinfessions will only be tagged as #kinsidering

Is imperfection a better source of inspiration than perfection?
Perfection is something which has no flaws, something which is desirable or needed for some people. Each person has their idea of perfection but this is heavily influenced by the media and people around them. For example, for people in the 50s being size 14/16 was perfect and being curvy was desirable, this was because Marilyn Monroe was huge in the media; being in many adverts. But this changed in the 60s when people like Twiggy came along who were tiny and unhealthy skinny which made being skinny perfection to many people. The media changed all their adverts to feature girls who all looked the same spreading the message that those body types and clothing was deemed perfect. This has been going on for hundreds of years. In the Victorian period women wanted to be pale because it had the connotation of being rich as the poor people had to work outside; getting a tan. Perfection does have a lot to do with social class and money as it's always the higher end brands which promote the idea the most and are what the people we look up to are wearing so we crave it. Magazines like Vogue, Glamour and Cosmopolitan all have sections in their magazines about whose wear what? Who looked best? And where you can get it promoting the huge companies by getting famous people to wear their clothes. On things like Instagram people are paid to wear a certain branding of clothing and to tell their following where to get it, for example Cara Delavigne can earn up to $300,000 per post by doing this. She is also the face for some many different brands such as Burberry, Mulberry, Dolce & Gabbana, and Jason Wu which makes young people idealize her and want to be like her. They see her in so many thing including posters and movies and think that to become famous or pretty you must look like her. This has been the case for many models such as Marilyn Monroe, she was everywhere and became the pin up girl for the 50’s; everyone wanted to be like her. This leads to so many problems in young girls minds because they couldn’t look like her and tried so hard. One Instagram model Essensa O’Neill quit social media in 2015 because it started becoming her life, her life felt set up to get the perfect Instagram picture. She idealized different models ‘I would look at these images and I would put them on my phone screensaver and I would use them as a reminder to be strong, and strong to me at that time meant skipping meals. It meant eating as [little] as I could.’ This is showing the negative effect that social media and perfections have on people she stopped eating to become the idea of perfection in her mind and what society told her to look for. We all use Instagram for validation, getting a like does make you feel good about yourself. After posting a video about quitting social media she changed all the captions for her images to show what really happened to get that image; for example, “Please like this photo I put on makeup, curled my hair, tight dress, big uncomfortable jewellery…took over 50 shots until I got one I thought you might
like, then edited this one for ages on several different apps. Just so could feel some social approval from you. THERE IS NOTHING REAL ABOUT THIS”
Bruno Metra and Laurence Janson’s are two photographer from France who have collectively made a photo collection called Id which is a set of portraits in which the model has cuts out from magazines stuck on their face. These images deal with identity hence why the collection is called “id”. They are trying to show that a person’s uniqueness is something which we should celebrate. They show that the ideals in the magazines won’t look perfect on everyone and just to be comfortable in your own skin.
Vision, keeMagazines, cinema, telep creating and imposing codes that become social references. What one must look like, how to make up, what clothes to wear, how to behave… We are fascinated by the power of media to influence people’s identities.” They want to use their media platform to show that you haven’t got to follow the ‘code’ and that you should be your own unique person. In the media everyone looks the same and there is little diversity. The media tells you how you should look and what’s on trend, how to get that look and that if you don’t look like that you’re not perfect or wanted. There are lots of models that have similar features to each other but the media needs to start showing all types of people from different backgrounds and places. At the the poster girls for Burberry, Mulberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Jason Wag etc. It shows a lack of diversity, it’s the media inadvertently telling you that what’s what you should aim to look like.
Metro an Jeanson’s images themselves are fairly simple and easy to read, what‘s brilliant  about the images is that they make no effort to try and hide the magazine and blend it in. It’s there and is making a statement. In second set of images they made “id2” they are stood in their bedrooms and what works well about that is that all gives us a look into the uniqueness and identity.  The people in the first set of images have no or little makeup on and are topless. It creates the idea that they have little identity, it makes the magazine cut out more prominent than in the first set. In the first image the women are fairly old and has a young wrinkle free face stuck on which to me is showing the lack of older people in the media, they are trying to show that that being old is undesirable. She isn’t represented in the media.
Carey Furth; a photographer from San Francisco challenged the idea of perfection by taking the American Beauty poster and swapping Mena Supari who plays Angela Hayes with normal day to day people. The reason she chose this poster is because it’s so ionic and stereotypical for this movie. The movie poster shows Angela Hayes laying naked in a bed of red rose petals. The scene this is taken from is one where Kevin space’s character; Lester Burnham is fantasying about one of his daughter’s friends, the scene portrays her a sexual object which is shown by the red rose petals and the way she is positioned. Furth didn’t want to do this she wanted the women to feel empowered by the image and make the women feel like American beauties. She did this by swapping the red rose petals with purple which is associated with beauty, pride and confidence.
The women she chose for the project were from all different ethnic backgrounds and were all different shapes and sizes, she did this so everyone can be represented as desirable and someone's dream girl like in the movie.
“By stepping into a fantasy dream girl world and by letting go of that fear, they free themselves up to direct that energy they once wasted on telling themselves that they weren't good enough to elsewhere in their life.”
She wanted the women to feel good in their skin and to make them feel like they are good enough, the reason she chose women of colour was so they get representation that they should get as the mainstream media rarely shows women of colour as the desirable characters. Its normally a white skinned girl with blonde hair far from what most girls are. The same applies to larger women who are normally the funny character or the unwanted character which makes larger women feel like they are unwanted themselves. Having no characters on television that they can relate to, this is a problem within the mainstream media as little coloured girls won’t be happy with what they look like because the TV doesn’t tell them that they are beautiful and wanted like they do skinny white girls.
“People stare at images in the media all day long that are not realistic. They are fantasies. Then they look in the mirror and they see someone who they think is incomparable... However, for me, I see it as a way to take back the power.”
The reason she describes it as unrealistic is because the image on the poster has been edited to make the model look perfect with no flaws or blemishes which is to realistic to anyone even skinny white girls. But Furth edited her images does that mean she is as bad as the mainstream media in making images unrealistic. Furth edited the images to make the women she photographed feel better about themselves she didn’t edit their body shape or how they looked.
"The media plays into women's insecurities to sell them things, They want you to believe that nothing in your life will go right if you don't first look a certain way. But that simply isn't true." 5The media make so much money of making people feel bad about themselves and selling them things to make people feel better about themselves. The average women spends around £140,000 on hair and cosmetics in her lifetime according to independent3 which shows that selling an image works and that women buy into these things.  Carey further uses people the media would say are imperfect and shows them in a perfect light so to some people she is using imperfections as a source of inspiration.
Cara Phillip’s is a Brooklyn based photographer who created a set of images called “Ultralight Beauties” which is a set of black and white portraits showing people’s imperfections by using an  ultralight on the model to bring out all the things that we see as flaws. Having Beauties in the title of the images makes you look at it in a different way because you are being told that the images are beautiful and not imperfections. She got the idea
of creating these images when doing prep work for a different photoshoot called “Singular Beauty” when she found an image of people with their eyes closed on doctors and medic-spa websites. The equipment that she used for these images were the same things you would have found in a doctors room, so she had to take some precautions before taking the images like a doctor would have.
The models that she used were just people walking down the street in New York, she didn’t know anything about them. But she ended up because it’s showing these imperfections on a range of people. Kind of showing that their not imperfections but people’s skins; we all have these imperfections. The black imperfections we are seeing are just pores, freckles and what the sun has done to the face if a person goes outside too long; they’re not imperfections. Having the models close their eyes make it look like it’s been taken for a doctor’s use and makes the portrait slightly more interesting; they don’t look like they are done by a photographer. She describes her images as “anti portraits”; “The aim of a portrait, in commercial and vernacular photography, is primarily to hide flaws–to present a two-dimensional ‘flawless’ version of the person. Even before Photoshop, photographers would hand paint negatives to enhance or improve the subject’s appearance. But [the function of these images] was to enhance and reveal flaws.” She’s taken something which normally connotes perfection and challenged it. Most people wouldn’t look at those images and see the flaws and the seemed to be the aim of the photographer. She wanted to create something which was highlighting flaws but making  them perfect; challenging the idea of perfection and flaws which she has done by using the lights showing off the flaws. The images are also saying that having a blemish free face is not possible, we might not see it but we have small blemishes. Some people may have less and some may have more but that’s due to the amount of time they spend outside and the kind of things they do. Ultra-violet lights can be harmful to your skin because of the heat but the artist wasn’t able to afford the lights at the time so she used a special lens which gave the same effects as the lights would. She took these images in 8 hour slots as she couldn’t afford to waste time as she had a low budget.
Artist like Nick Knight challenges the idea of perfection by using Winnie Harlow in his photography. Winnie is a Canadian model who appeared on the twenty-first season on America’s Next Top Model, she has a skin condition called Vitiligo. Vitiligo is a condition which effects the pigmentation in the skin with the skin becoming lighter in areas and patchy. The parts of the skin which are most exposed to the sun are the worst affected areas and only effects 1% of the world’s population; only half the time you see it before the age of 20. It’s something which people aren’t used to seeing around and most people would stare or take a double look at. Now seeing something which we see as abnormal in the media and magazines to great because we are starting to celebrate people’s uniqueness. It also nice for people who may have condition like Vitiligo to see themselves represented in the media. It makes people with the condition more open and confident seeing someone with vitiligo become so famous and successful in an industry where looks are so important.
OBE Nick Knight is one of the most influential photographers who directed and founded the award winning showstudio.com; a fashion photography website. Knight has done collaborations with fashion designers Yoji Yamamoto, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen. This is one of the reasons him using a model such a Winnie is so important because he has so much influence in the fashion industry. She becomes more seen and her
condition becomes less of a talking point for the public and people with the condition. Knight used Winnie is a Diesel advert where he stuck her in with all the other people in the image, was wasn’t the main focus of the
image, she was just a small aspect of it. I think what this does is show to be as normal as any of the other model and people. In an interview for Showstudio.com Winnie said “Putting me in there felt so natural and I feel people needed to see that like you don’t have to place me with someone who’s in a wheel chair that’s all
great and lovely but I’m not like a different model; I’m just a model” I feel like her saying this showing that her condition isn’t a disability, it’s something which doesn’t affect her and she should be treated as an abled bodied person.  Which I think is an important thing as some people may see her as having an issue especially when you see her with disabled people in all the photos. But I also think it bring up another issue of excluding disabled in magazines; as that’s not seen as what’s perfect but its more real that the images we do see. In the interview Knight describes Winnies skin conditions like someone having different hair, he doesn’t see it as a big deal he just see it as a unique quality. When asked if Winnie feels weird about seeing herself on billboards she reponded with “as soon as a picture would come out of me it would be all over Instagram and it would kind of go viral people have never seem something like this before so it was like omg so when I started seeing pictures of myself I had already seen myself on everything already” This is showing how normal its becoming to see a model like Winnie as now its stop going viral and has just been accepted into the model industry. Winnie also talks about wanting to be a Victoria secrets models which is something that I think would help people see her a normal model. The girls in the Victoria secrets companies and all very skinny and generic looking I think having Winnie model for them would be a break through as she is someone very different from what we are used to seeing on the run way.
I do think that Nick knight does challenge the ideal of what is in the media by using model such as Winnie as she is more seen as it’s not as much of a shock when you see someone who does like different with things like virago. It’s also representation for people with skin conditions which makes them feel more confident as someone is representing them. She’s used in huge companies where is isn’t the main visual aspect of the image; she is just a very small feature of the images, she doesn’t stand out she is natural in the photo. Nick Knight is a huge influence for many people and for him to photograph someone who isn’t seen as perfect makes others look and think about who their photographing, he does photos for so many big brand that project the ideal of perfection it give a new sort of perfect to young people and the media.

Sebastian Vettel seems to have fallen out of love with F1, with over 300 days since his last win
It's 301 days since Sebastian Vettel last won a race. And there was no sign of a reprieve under a fierce sun as he was once again driven out of sight by Lewis Hamilton 's decisive track record lap.
While Hamilton took pole for the 86th time in his career, a figure that boggles the mind when you consider Sir Jackie Stewart started only 99 races, Vettel was a miserable seventh in qualifying for the French Grand Prix. The German, who was nearly a second and a half off the pace, is stuck in Briton's shade and it is playing hell with his mind.
Valtteri Bottas was second quickest, completing a Mercedes lockout, Charles Leclerc third for Ferrari, Max Verstappen fourth for Red Bull and 19-year-old Brit Lando Norris fifth for McLaren.
Sebastian Vettel has struggled in recent months for Ferrari as he looks at at Paul Ricard
Vettel will start Sunday's French Grand Prix from seventh after a poor qualifying session
Hamilton is not a serious historian of the sport, although he appreciates his own p lace in the pantheon and respects the legends whose names are echo through the eras, but Vettel is assuredly. He can reel off the numbers that count, the records he once turned his face to rewriting while he became the youngest single, double, triple, quadruple world champion in a streak between 2010 and 2013 when Red Bull ruled the track.
He might tell you, for example, that he is third in the all-time list of race winners with 52, behind only Hamilton, 78, and Michael Schumacher, 91. He achieved more poles in a single season, 15 in 2011 , than anyone else ever.
It was not meant to be Hamilton, but him, edging up to every summit worth conquering.
The four-time world champion appears to have lost his appetite for F1 in recent times
Vettel arrived in France with a wedding ring, having married after the Canadian Grand Prix
Bernie Ecclestone, Vettel's close friend, said: "Sebastian is very quick but he seems to have a problem when he is right up against Lewis. I think it's in his head.
"He is so desperate to win another world championship and for Lewis not to win another. Side by side with him, he has a mental block. "
The signs of tension are there in the mistakes Vettel has made and his reactions to them. There was Baku in 2017 when he drove into Hamilton – the lowest act of his career. In the last year alone he has spun or run off at Germany, Italy, America, Japan, Bahrain and Canada. Three of those incidents involved Hamilton.
It has been about 300 days since his last win that came at the 2018 Belgian Grand Prix
The last mistake, a fortnight ago in Montreal, was one such occasion. Under pressure from the rival he now trails by 62 points, he went wide on the grass and re-emerged on track in an unsafe manner, or so the stewards decided. He was handed a five-second penalty and lost the victory to Hamilton. Cue massive Vettel displeasure.
He was unhinged as he expressed his anger over the radio, calling the stewards "blind" and moving the first and second place markers in parc ferme. "He acted like a petulant child," said John Watson, who raced in a more dangerous age, in the Seventies and Eighties.
"He should have been charged with bringing the sport into disrepute.
"If Ross Brawn was still at Ferrari he would like to have a rat up a drainpipe."
A controversial five- second time penalty in Canada last time out denied Vettel a chance to end his winning drought, as he moves the post-race placings boa rds in protest
Title rival Lewis Hamilton looks on having inherited the victory in Montreal
Ferrari then went through the charade of reviewing the decision, a process that required significant new evidence. Instead, they cited Sky Sports analysis by Karun Chandhok, the former HRT driver.
Hamilton said: "I heard they were focusing (on the review).
"When I heard that Karun's video was the new evidence, I was pretty relaxed after that."
Hamilton is right. Ferrari's nonsensical review told of a team distracted, perhaps to place their No. 1 driver despite the pointlessness of it all.
Vettel is, in fact, a cheerful character when he is not imploding. He has always been happy to share a joke since entering Formula One. He enjoys English comedy and rhyming slang.
Former F1 supremo and Vettel's friend Bernie Ecclestone believes it would not take much to convince the German to retire from the sport in the near future
One evening in the BMW hospitality area 12 years ago, he came over to tell me and the man from the Daily Express that he had found a new word he liked: kerfuffle. Which, ironically, might have been applied to the Montreal flashpoint.
He is old fashioned in many aspects: he does not use social media, he abhors selfies, he uses a fountain pen and paper.
Private to the point of invisibility, he does not even confirm that he has two children, Emily and Matilda. Nor did he announce that a few days after his Montreal meltdown he married his childhood sweetheart Hanna. The ceremony in Switzerland was attended by only close family. No Formula One people. No friends. Or so it is said.
Nobody would have known about the wedding, but for the shiny, smart gold band he got on his fourth finger at his press conference here at Circuit Paul Ricard.
Ecclestone believes Vettel might be nearing the finishing line, aged 32. "Sebastian would stop, and I don't think it would take a lot for that to happen," said the former F1 supremo. "If something upsets him, he'll leave. He could easily do that. He would put his wife and children first. "

* Season ongoing
Certainly, Vettel seems to have fallen out of love with Formula One, though his £ 36million-a-year salary is a nice little sweetener. It is signed up until the end of next season. He could quit then or indeed throw it all in at the end of this year if the punishment he is absorbing at Ferrari becomes unbearable.
Christian Horner, his boss during the halcyon Red Bull days, is reluctant to criticize Vettel but put his finger on at least part of the driver's current malaise, saying: 'Yes, we had a lot of success but it was also fun along the way. It looks like though he has lost his enjoyment or Formula One.
"He was phenomenal for us. He was like a metronome. You could rely on him 100 per cent.
"Now at Ferrari, where there are numerous management changes, it seems to feel a lot or responsibility falls on him directly. It is a pressure cooker. "

10 Things Healthcare Marketers Get Wrong With Facebook Ads
Facebook isn’t always the easiest platform to stay on top of, due to it’s constantly changing ad setup interfaces, constant updates, and routine algorithm adjustments. There are subtleties in the setup that can cost you in ad spend, traffic, and potential revenue depending on your campaign strategy and intent. And if your strategy isn’t up to par prior to setup, you’re almost better off burning those campaign budgets yourself. Facebook doesn’t lament poor ad campaign execution – it profits from it! So for those reasons, we’ve put together the top ten mistakes healthcare marketers in particular (but by no means exclusively) make that we see most often. Some of it is simpler than you think!
1.  Your content isn’t tailored to a specified audience
2.  You’re shotgunning ad campaigns
Shotgunning is a side effect of wanting your content to be seen as soon as possible by as many people possible. It’s as expensive as it is ineffective, because Facebook is the center of attention for a lot of diverse audiences. Be sure to take your time. Select the right interests, locations, groups, and demographics that make up the core of your target audience. Facebook’s algorithms are tied to relevancy – if your ads aren’t relevant, you’re burning your ad budget with your own hands.
3.  You’re not engaging with your audience
If your audience is actively engaged with your content, or trying to reach out to you directly – don’t be scared, engage with them! It promotes quality discussion and brand trust, and is always best to do. Leave no stone unturned when promoting greater conversation around your brand.  Not to mention, leveraging comments on Facebook has HUGE impact on your marketing strategy. It can impact everything from the content you use, depicted imagery, how you refine your audience, and even how you refine your message.
4.  Your bid strategy is off
Outside of targeting the wrong audience, and producing irrelevant content – this is the most costly mistake of them all.  When setting up your campaigns, in the “Ad Set” edit section – scroll down to the “Optimization & Delivery” section and (when under the When You Get Charged option) be sure the selection is not set to impression! This basically gives Facebook free range to charge you, as it’s based on purely views.  If you’re looking to do a post boost, change this option to “Post Engagement” to maximize the bang for your buck.
5.  You’re not using hashtags
The first hashtag was used in 2007 by Chris Messina, and has been leveraged across multiple platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Tumblr. It provides individuals a way to connect, express emotion, and categorize similar interests.  It’s a godsend for keyword searching. So it’s important to use hashtags in organic posts in Facebook, as having 1 or 2 hashtags in ads can actually expand your reach.
6.  You’re imagery is off
Imagery is the most important aspect of any post on Facebook.  Similar to content, if your imagery doesn’t catch your audience right off the bat, you could be in trouble. We institute a “goldfish” rule when it comes to imagery: if your image doesn’t catch your audience’s attention within the first 3 seconds, they’ve already forgotten it.  So select visually compelling, relevant, and meaningful images that resonate with your audience and your message. Just as well, be sure to have multiple images in place for AB testing purposes.  This allows you to capture preferential based data, and affords you the flexibility to pivot your creative direction quickly.
7.  You’re not diversifying your ad types and/or ad placement
The most common ad on Facebook is your basic click to website, static 1200×627 image ad.  This is effective, but newer ad types are available that can drive greater engagement, views, and set yourself apart from your competition.  Ad placement is also important depending on your objective (for example, mobile has been outperforming standard desktop ads and at a fraction of the cost).  But if you’re looking to include contact form ads or display more complex product benefits, you might need to focus on Desktop. Different strategies call for weighing the pros and cons of placement diversity and ad type.
Let’s look at a breakdown of placements and ad types to better show you which may or may not align with your campaign objectives:
Lead Generation Ad Type:
This new ad style has been pretty popular these past couple months due to its ability to reach specific individuals and capture information through custom forms.  This ad type requires a link to your privacy policy, custom text that you can have either in paragraph or bullet format and with a custom message at the end.
Make sure you have a unique attention grabbing statement and content that will bring them value  – otherwise success will be difficult with this type of ad.
Clicks to Website & Website Conversion Ad Types:
A Facebook ad staple, this specific ad type has multiple layouts to choose from.  You have your standard 1200px by 627px image, some headline text, ad text, and link description text.
Another variation is the multi-image ads (Facebook Carousel ads) which include up to a few 1080px by 1080px images with custom text per each image block.  This can be very effective if you have multiple landing pages you’re looking to convert from, multiple events, products, and theme related offerings.
Another popular conversion ad nowadays are video ads.  The recommended text length is how many characters of ad copy could be displayed on smaller screens. Video lengths up to 30 seconds or under will continuously loop on Facebook for up to approximately 90 seconds.
App Installs:
For all you startup healthcare brands with apps, this is a solid way of gaining active users for your platforms and (most importantly) downloads.  There is a catch: you’ll have to have a Facebook App ID in order to use the Facebook SDK for iOS, Android, or JavaScript (Web).  But this shouldn’t be a problem if you already have a development team in place.
Page Likes Ad Types:
If you’re looking to grow your brand’s Facebook page or healthcare community, you’ll need a little assistance from the Page Likes campaign within Facebook.  This includes Desktop News Feed, Mobile News Feed and Right Column ads. We’ve personally found that the Mobile and Right Column perform the best for the lowest price, but it all depends on the audience you’re looking to target. Some of the specs and recommendations include an image size of 1200px by 444px, a limitation of 25 characters for the headline, and 90 characters for the bulk text.
8.  You’re image size isn’t quite right
Another big boo-boo: wrong image size in place when running ads.  This not only gives the potential audience a negative first impression, but it looks lazy.  If your image size is too small, Facebook will blow the size up and the image will be blurry and pixelated. If it’s too large – Facebook crops it for you.
Below are the basic Facebook image sizes. Use them appropriately!
Static Image Size: 1200px x 627px
Multi-Image Size:  600px x 600px
Organic Post Size: 600px x 600px
9.  Make sure ads are mobile friendly
In the U.S. alone, 73% of people say their phone is always with them, and almost half of them check their phone 35+ times a day.  Since people consume mobile content on Facebook faster than on their desktop or laptops, Facebook will continue to make updates to its products to ensure your marketing dollars are effectively utilized on those mobile users.
10.  No clear call-to-actions
Call-to-actions, also known as CTA, are the single most important part of your ad and your website.  In Facebook, they give you a few button CTA’s to choose from, so you have to make do with those options.  Yes, they are fairly boring and generic. They do very little to convert users – so it’s your job to make sure the CTA is clear and concise in the messaging/copy and sometimes even in the headline.
So remember: Facebook ad campaign strategy and execution go hand in hand. If your target audience isn’t refined, your backend isn’t setup properly, and your content and imagery isn’t relevant or doesn’t resonate – you’re in a very serious world of marketing hurt. Yet these are common mistakes that we see on a day to day basis! Regardless, probably the most important tip of them all is that these facets of Facebook advertising are constantly changing. That’s right. Facebook is a constantly evolving platform whose primary attention is focused on the user. Which means as marketers, we have to be extremely attentive as to how those adaptations alter our ability to spread our message. And oftentimes, it’s the simplest mistakes that can send a like campaign careening downwards, trigger an adverse event, or suddenly eat up a lifetime budget in a weekend.
