#1. for Yohan to call Gaon Gaon-ah

Text
Zero context WIP game ! Thank you @clawbehavior for the tag, excited to do this because I've got like 10 different wips and kept resisting the temptation to post snippets. These fics don't have definitive titles yet so the ones here are approximative descriptions
1. Ms Ji & the Kangs
“Yohan-ah, I love you, don’t cry” Isaac says, patting his baby brother’s stomach when he fusses. They’re both laying on Isaac’s bed after lunch, a bit drowsy in the early hours of the afternoon. Young-Ok watches the two as she folds laundry.
“Nanny, why does Yohan have no eyebrows ?” Isaac asks curiously.
She chuckles at the question, taking a tiny pair of socks out of the basket and folding them together. “Most babies are born without much hair, he’ll grow them later on.”
2. Conversations
Gaon swipes ‘accept call’ and props his phone against a utensil holder as Elijah’s lovely face comes into view. She has cut her hair into a bob, even bangs forming a curtain on her forehead.
“Gaon, it's an emergency ! You need to come to Geneva and do something !” Elijah’s voice immediately comes through the phone speaker, loud enough to be heard over the sound of meat sizzling on the stove. “Yohan is serious about growing that ugly mustache and the clinic receptionist keep trying to hit on him !”
3. Yohan through Isaac's photography
October 1991, Yohan showing me his teeth
Gaon chuckles at the photo. It’s blurry like the objective had gone out of focus at the last minute. Yohan is giving the camera a smile and scrunching his nose, eyes closed under his fringe like he’s shielding them from the flash. Some milk teeth are missing from his gums, two permanent ones just peeking above the surface. He must have been no more than six or seven here.
4. Gaon scrolls online forums
"Judge Oh, I have this file I wanted discuss with you"
Jinjoo comes up behind him to see just as he is about to unlock his computer. What greets Gaon after entering his password is the previous night's research topic brightly displayed on the screen. Shit. Carelessly, he had simply shut the laptop before going to bed, instead of closing the tabs and erasing his search history.
Panic and embarrassment seize Gaon on the spot. He's about two hundred-percent certain that Jinjoo got a glimpse of what was written on the screen. Omegaverse fanfiction of him and their boss. Gaon wants to explode.
"You have…a lot of open tabs, Judge Kim."
5. Another snippet from Conversations
“You have something under your eye”
“Hmm ?” Yohan hums, closing said eye when Gaon’s thumb gently swipes across his skin.
“Eyelash.” Gaon flicks it away “crap I should’ve told you to make a wish”
They’re laying on the couch in a tangle of limbs, Gaon on top of Yohan like a weighted blanket, chest to chest, book long abandoned on the coffee table. Kkomi is on the armrest behind Yohan’s head, sniffing at his hair. Gaon yawns into Yohan’s collar.
“We should go to bed.” Yohan says, voice hoarse.
6. Sunah lives
It is routine until her ears catch familiar voices, ones she thought she would never hear again, along with the cries of a fussy child.
“Gaon-ah, give her to me”
Sunah turns around to see, to her surprise, peering over the café’s balcony, Kang Yohan, his niece, his former associate, passing over an agitated toddler.
“I told you we should have brought her stroller,” Kim Gaon’s reprimands are a refreshing thing to hear “She gets tired.”
“It would have been inconvenient though, with all the stairs and narrow streets.” Kang Elijah chimes in. She is on crutches now, standing just a few centimeters shy of her uncle’s height.
“That’s fine” Kang Yohan hauls up the little girl against his chest so that her head rests on his shoulder, pats her back. “Appa will be the stroller today."
Tagging @thedeviljudges if you feel like doing it !

Rightful place- Part 1 : Gaon
read on ao3
Yohan had wanted to explore more of the president's YouTube channel, to look for clues or other things they could use, but Gaon had insisted on following the no work after work on Tuesdays rule he had gotten Yohan to agree on a few days ago.
Therefore, they are seated, as ever so often, on Yohan's incredibly comfortable couch, each a glass of 1874 Scottish whiskey Yohan has poured them earlier in front of them, watching mindless TV.
However, unlike every other evening, Yohan is not seated cross legged in his separate armchair, establishing invisible boundaries between him and the rest of the mortal world. Instead, he has chosen the seat right next to Gaon on the couch that is big enough to hold at least four people comfortably, his arm leisurely lying on the backrest behind Gaon. Yohan is wearing a knitted sweater and his hair is down and he looks so goddamned soft which is unfair, really.
Gaon is thankful that he doesn't actually need to pay attention to the screen, because his senses are hyperaware of the ways their bodies are brushing together, the clean scent of Yohan's aftershave, the soft tapping of Yohan's fingers and just. He can't focus at all. He definitely wouldn't be able to tell who is saying what kind of gibberish on the screen.
Gaon may look naive but he's not stupid. He knows how to read the fleeting once overs Yohan used to give him. Knows he didn't imagine the meaning behind "it must be hard... living alone." while he was pinned against a wall less than 5 cm away from Yohan. Gaon didn't really do things like one night stands or... Hookups between colleagues, not to mention between boss and employee, but if he did, and well if Kang Yohan had been someone less dangerous than Kang Yohan, he's pretty sure they might have had one.
Even up until the whole giving-you-clothes incident, that had left Gaon's nerves raw and his knees weak, before the awful mess the rest of this evening had been.
But since then a lot of things had changed. Things had become a lot more loaded, and Elijah was involved and somehow every touch and every gaze seemed to come with it's fair share of implications. Yohan seemed to have had no problem with more or less explicitly offering uh ....physical closeness, but once Gaon had stubbornly established himself as part of this house it had all come to a halt.
Although Yohan seems to be more open to conversation, as their frequent late night chit-chats can testify, he is also more careful with his gaze and its meaning, and in recent days he seemed to avoid letting it linger too long, keeping his thoughts to himself. More guarded.
Thus the dwindling appreciative glances.
Guarded means vulnerable, so much Gaon has come to understand during his life. Is Yohan vulnerable, around Gaon ?
That's not unlikely.
Even when they were not trying strangle each other – more Yohan trying to strangle Gaon, really, Gaon was more one for old fashioned punches –  they seemed to excel at pushing knives in where it hurt the most.
Furthermore, what future did they have, in a world Kang Yohan was trying to burn ?
But somehow, on quiet evenings like this one, it felt like everything was alright.
"Gaon-ah."
"Mmh ?" Gaon answers innocently, trying to sound not as jittery as he feels. Yohan is looking directly at him, his expression carefully neutral. It's so intense, still, that Gaon falters and pretends to turn his attention back to the TV. He can kind of guess what is happening but alas, he is also a coward.
He hears Yohan sigh.
"Gaon-ah." Yohan repeats in a pointed way.
Gaon hesitantly raises his gaze to meet Yohan's and forces himself to not look away.
Yohan studies Gaon’s face for a few seconds, before he uses his hand that was lying behind Gaon's neck to lightly grab Gaon’s neck and draw closer in one swift motion.
He stops mid-way.
Gaon, surprisingly hasn't blinked. He is not breathing either.
Yohan is not the type to ask people what they want. He just gets what he's after, by any means necessary.
There is no grey area with Yohan. Stand in my way, or stand beside me. But even if, and Gaon refuses to believe no part of it is genuine, if everything Yohan does is to get him to join his side, or out of another obscure motive, he has always left the ultimate choice to Gaon. This time it's like he's giving Gaon an opportunity to run away.
Could he walk away from Kang Yohan, after having known him like this ? Gaon isn't so sure.
Maybe, just maybe, his place is right here. Shielding the word from Kang Yohan, shielding Kang Yohan from the world.
He doesn't move away.
Yohan takes it as an answer and – finally, Gaon thinks – leans in all the way.
_
Gaon isn't sure where the few seconds in between have gone but one moment he is tracing the outlines of Yohan's face with his eyes, the other he is fervently kissing back, his hand slightly trembling as it settles against Yohan's neck, against his jaw.
Yohan's kiss is bruising. He kisses like he wants to steal all the air out of Gaon's lungs, like he wants Gaon to have no choice but to gasp for air to breathe. He kisses with possessiveness, and with something akin to utter desperation. Yohan’s teeth clench down on Gaon's bottom lip hard enough to draw blood when he momentarily breaks away – just as long as necessary to adjust the angle – like he can't bear to part without leaving marks on Gaon's lips. It doesn't seem like he will get enough.
When Gaon finally pushes Yohan back, just a little, he is still human, he needs air goddamnit, he finds Yohan looking a tiny bit roughed up, wide-eyed and looking so, so young, almost like a wounded animal, and Gaon's heart does a flip in his chest.
They stay there, just breathing in each other’s space, while Gaon is trying to make light of Yohan’s expression. Maybe, just maybe – and he surprises himself for daring to think that –  like with anything precious to Kang Yohan, it’s loss Yohan’s afraid of.
People feel greater pain when something they had is taken from them.
Gaon opts for a small smile, aiming for reassuring and gently moves his finger over Yohan's cheek.
I'm not going to disappear. He tries to convey, and hopes Yohan understands.
Gaon really is weak, when this man is in pain.
Yohan's haunted look is gone so fast it’s as if it were never there, replaced by his usual generally smug-but-i-know-you know-I'm-cute attitude, as he settles back against the couch. Gaon has to fight an urge to roll his eyes but dear lord he lo– is willing to put up with a lot for this man.
"Ah. Well." Gaon clasps his hand together.
He pushes himself off the couch. "It's getting quite late, I should go to bed."
"Alright." Yohan closes his eyes briefly as he tilts his head in aknowledgement, a slight smile playing on his lips.
He looks peaceful for once.
"See you tomorrow." Gaon says, and he makes sure to make it sound like a promise rather than like a question.
He's not going anywhere. Simply, it seems like a good place to leave them, for tonight.
"Mmh." Yohan hums. Gaon assumes he got it.
"Don't sleep here."
Yohan doesn't bother to reopen his eyes and just vaguely waves his hand as if to say shoo shoo.
Gaon does rolls his eyes then. But he smiles all the way back to his room.

💙Masterpost❤️
___
A.N : Gaon is not a coward, he just thinks he is one :( I'm also thinking about the fact that none of the times ever he has found himself being strangled or smth he showed any fear of what might happen to him up until 'if you want to kill me, do as you please' like BBY please 🥺 need to explore that.
Anyway this little fic, ficlet thingie has prequels, sequels, anything you like. How it's going to turn out in the end and what I'm going to post idk yet ╮(. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)╭ we shall see what the future holds
Might also change the title
Now if my phone would stop autocorrecting Gaon to "gain" that'd be swell

You know, it’s been a month since the finale but i’m still on TDJ brainrot and thinking about
1. Does Gaon knew Yohan get shot, and K was killed
2. Does Gaon knew Yohan was the who called Soohyun to save him
3. Will Gaon ever see Elijah’s painting of him
4. How did Yohan knew where and when to save Gaon from the bomb (and the conversation that follows to this information)
5. What are their internal thoughts on the last scene of the series, or like what was their direction on script??? (You know the filming script and the original script are different)
6. What’s going on in Yohan’s head when he heard Gaon said “I’ll go with you”
7. And when Yohan realized that Gaon has been manipulated all along that made him looked at Gaon and said “Gaon-ah” just before the professor left
8. Or when he heard Gaon said “If you want to kill me just do it”
9. Oh and the dinner scene from ep. 9!! I really want to know what Yohan was thinking. From the smile in the car after the call, and when they ate together at the dinner table
10. Where’s Elijah in all of their fights?? Did she heard it? What was her reaction?
11. I want to know the detail on how Gaon get shipped inside that box!!
12. How long has it been since Yohan’s prison death was announced to the bombing event
13. What was the reason they always muted the audio when Gaon scream Yohan’s name??
14. I want to know what Yohan thinks when he saw Gaon breakdown and crying in ep 7, ep 13 and ep 14
15. In ep 12, Gaon left on foot. So...... did they really went to work together ever since he stayed at Kang’s Mansion??
16. What was the file Cha Kyunghee hide in her cigar?
17. Where’s Kkomii??
Oh well, I thought I would get over this drama already. But no it’s still in my head all day everyday.

Just to add to the ending discourse (sorry!!!), I thought the 'do it well or...' line was Yohan's inner dialogue like in an earlier ep where we hear them both think to themselves 'ah so this is what gets to you' (paraphrasing!), and also to show how in sync they are in that they can have this almost psychic conversation. In that case, it's plausible to suggest Yohan didn’t even intend for Gaon to know he’d been there at all (in this scenario he’s waiting up high just for one last glimpse) (1/5)
..but even if you don’t buy that, it’s pretty obvious he definitely didn’t plan on being chased down for an intense staring contest. Which means he returned to Korea, risking breaking his cover, with no expectations for himself other than the chance to see Gaon again. So if he’s that desperate after only one month, it’s actually illogical to believe they WOULDN'T see each other again! And to frame it in terms of romance, you’ve got the classic trope of Yohan as the one who’s in love (2/5)
...but believes it to be unrequited, happy just to glimpse his love from afar before leaving, and then Gaon, by his actions (running after him) and expressions (heart eyes!), confesses his own feelings and proves him wrong. And if they look sad/vulnerable it’s because this is the first time they are truly seeing each other, without any secrets or confusion between them, and there’s still a lot of pain there because that doesn’t just disappear, but openness is the first step to healing... (3/5)
...which is why they end up smiling. And you’re right, I’ve seen ppl screencap Gaon’s sad face after Yohan walks off as if it was the final frame and thus proof that he’s alone and depressed and it's a bad ending, but he DOES start smiling again, right at the very end, and that makes all the difference. On a totally different note, despite the peak romance of it all I don’t think I’ll ever be able to watch it now without laughing cos I have this vision of Yohan... (4/5)
babe!!! i didn't get ask 5. 😭😭
but ohhhh that’s a very good take on the “do it well” part actually!!!!!!! no lie, when we had that scene with their inner dialogue, it was confusing for a second. it took me a moment to realize it was their thoughts when watching a few weeks ago, lmao. but that totally makes sense actually!!! see, i’m not partial to it being one way other another, but i think i like this option, too.
i do disagree about yohan’s intention of being noticed by gaon. i personally think he wanted gaon to know. otherwise, he wouldn’t have purposefully put his hand on gaon’s chair. if he was trying to be stealthy, that’s not the way to do it. i think what he did was test instead; yohan loves the hunt. he wasn’t sure gaon would actually come find him or not, and when gaon shouts for yohan, it starts his realization that gaon actually wants him in his life. yohan took the risk of rubbing salt into his wound just to see how gaon felt, which is why he nods and gets emotional at first because he thinks gaon is upset with him. but then gaon smiles, and yohan realizes that what he thought was wrong. which is where that desperation comes into play. he wanted gaon to chase him and to see if he’d still walk away knowing gaon would always be there instead of walking away with finality and realizing gaon never wanted to see him again. so def still illogical that they won’t see each other again. they absolutely will, and it won’t take long at all. cuz yeah, yohan came back after a month, lmao. man has no sense of self-preservation, and he's in love, so.
i do agree with the romance trope as well. it’s totally yohan being in love and at first thinking gaon doesn’t reciprocate it, but he’s wrong, of course. it’s definitely a moment to give them time away from each other for a bit. a month isn’t very long to be on your own and heal, and i think both need that for themselves. plus as pointed out in other posts, there is no way they’re not calling and facetiming. i made a note on another post how elijah specifically talked to someone in texas, from across the world, and you’re telling me she’s not going to be calling gaon every day? yohan’s not going to sneak in secret FaceTime moments with gaon? please.
i’ve seen a few tweets, specifically, with people sad about the ending because they parted ways and i’m like ???????????? do yall not have eyes???? what are you TALKING about. now that yohan knows gaon loves him, mans is not staying away, lmao. we know how dedicated yohan is to family. in what world would yohan abandon gaon? literally never.

Devil judge ep 15 spoilers:
1. Honestly, don't disagree with the choice Gaon made in stopping the live trial of Jukchang. Yohan was very much going to kill him. Those words that Gaon said resonated: We hesitate, because we're human. We're human because we hesitate.
2. God look at their faces as Yohan is choking Gaon. They're HURTING each other. This is the worst.
3. GAON'S BOW TO YOHAN'S BACK AS HE LEAVES THE ROOM, JUST KILL ME ALREADY.
4. Oh no it's just the two of them in the house now.
5. At least Yohan has Elijah. Gaon has literally no one.
6. The professor's smart. He knows that blind loyalty is not Gaon's forte and he just need to plant the one seed of doubt. Gaon will do the rest.
7. SMACK HIM SUNAH
8. Omg loving the two corpo guys and their chemistry
9. This president is 100% based on Trump. 100%.
10. YES SMACK EM SUNAH (X2)
11. Wow Sunah literally examining Yohan like he's a shiny object she wants to carry
12. Sunah should know that Yohan wouldn't be anywhere near as easy to bully as someone like Heo Jeong Se. She really must like him.
13. Bad move Yohan. She'll crush you.
14. Lol the symbolism of the light falling on the floor and going out. (paired with how Gaon literally shuts the door on the light as he leaves earlier in the episode) I usually don't like heavy handed symbolism but weirdly, I kinda like it in this show.
15. Oh god watching Gain retrace Soohyun's footsteps is actually painful. I just wish she had been more impactful of a character.
16. Yohan has his hair up at home, I think soft Yohan is gone.
17. Oh god, that's actually a clever set up. I can understand why Gaon thought he had killed her. Hell, Yohan did half the set up himself by simply being a) very violently anti Soohyun and b) Very Bad with Emotions. Also if Gaon just knew that K was dead, that might have literally helped with the issue because I think he thought that person he spotted was K.
18. Ah yes, the symbolism of Yohan grabbing the knife almost directly to his heart?! NO I'M NOT OKAY WHY DO YOU ASK.
19. WHY ARE THE TWO OF YOU STANDING SO CLOSE TO EACH OTHER, IS MURDER JUST YOUR KINK OR???
20. wow that parallel to the conversation from the beginning of the episode ("you can kill me if you want", "I'll let you kill me if you want") LOOK THEY LOVE EACH OTHER AND THE TRAUMA IS KILLING THEM
21. OK THE SHOW MADE THE SOOHYUN PARALLEL NOT ME. THEY LITERALLY PARALLELED YOHAN WITH HIS IN SHOW HETERO LOVE INTEREST. THE SHOW DID THAT. AND WE'RE SUPPOSED TO NOT FIND THAT GAY?!
22. "GAON-AH"?! please I'm deceased.
23. Oh no cops
24. Yohan's VOICE. His desperation as he looks at Gaon and asks him if Gaon actually believed that Yohan just used him.
25. Gaon looks like he's shattering omg.
26. THAT LITTLE NOD FROM YOHAN TO GAON WHAT DID THAT MEAN
27. ah the snake speaks
28. GAON'S FACE IS RIPPING ME APART. Jin Young for the love of God just do a romcom next.
29. Jin young delivering some STELLAR acting
30. YOHAN'S DESPERATE BROKEN "GAON-AH" GOODBYE SLAYED AGAIN
31. Yohan for the love of God why is that saved on your phone. It should have been deleted off the surface of the earth. SO THAT EVIL CONNIVING VILLAINS DON'T GET IT.
32. Ji Sung delivering some stellar acting
33. Called it.
34. That ending? As Gaon looks at the camera? Fucking hell, now thats art.

the breakfast scene truly warmed my heart. the dynamics they all share is so interesting to watch especially how Yohan runs away as soon as the caretaker enters and comments on how he never eats the food she cooks and there's a cut to gaons face which looked a bit surprised. there's a lot of game pieces in play now and the ambiguity of it all, whose truth is the truth is indeed the question we perhaps won't get an answer until the end. the bickering between the sibling made me 🥺🥺🥺
Given how seon ah had threatened Yohan it's understandable how he reacted when he realized Elijah wasn't home. He could probably have avoided hitting gaon but his primal instincts were just in overdrive for any coherent thoughts. I get the feeling he did feel chastised when Elijah remarks how he humiliated her.
(did anyone else think how obvious they made it that Elijah is developing a crush/possessive attitude towards gaon?)
I really loved the interaction scene where the minister truly expected Yohan to grovel before her but he just laughs her off. A good parallel not failing to show who's the actual boss here despite the circumstances.
As the episode progresses you can also see gaon's thought process changing. Going from supporting yohans decision or trying to find an excuse that would portray him in a positive light to Elijah to actually suspecting Yohan especially when soo hyun calls and he actually prompts Yohan's name when all this time it was him trying to find if there's any other person of interest apart from Yohan. Clearly the progress made has taken lots of steps back, infact gone back to episode 1 probably.
Gaon actually going and throwing the first punch didn't suprise me, but if he'd rationally thought about it he'd realize Yohan would never actually be dumb enough to get caught so easily. But his best friend was hurt and all the suspicions planted in his mind had taken root and hence the fight.
Yohan trying to control his punch and then just throwing gaon on surfaces is just very funny to me. Animal urges are indeed to corner your prey and toy with it 😈
I don't understand how all of the villains could bank on this one guy's transaction to frame Yohan and think they'd actually get away with it tho? Seemed like bad writing to me or maybe there was more details but we weren't shown.
Gotta appreciate how soon ah is playing the long game by slowly sowing the seeds in everyone's minds and making everyone dependant on her and the foundation. Wonder how Yohan will respond.. considering at the moment all I can see him doing is alienating his allies.
Well this was literally a sleep text! Thanks if you made it till here! Lmk your thoughts too :)

Hi! I want to ask about the devil judge. I still don’t quite understand the ending. Does Yohan now forgive Gaon after he willing to bomb suicide himself or even earlier during he called gaon as Gaon-ah or during the ending scene where he came back? And does that mean Yohan will be coming back to Gaon right after Elijah treament when he said I’ll be coming back? I read so many theories but nothing quiet explain the ending in either sad or happy ending
hi there!! of course, so i actually wrote a meta post about the ending that should sum it all up for you. it's actually a very happy ending!!
i don't know that yohan was ever mad at gaon for wanting to kill himself tbh. at that point in the story, especially after they both found out gaon was a plant, yohan had no heart to hold resentment toward gaon who'd learned half of his life had been a lie. yohan saved gaon from the bomb, knew he was being irrational for 1. thinking yohan was dead and 2. again, finding out he was a plant.
i think yohan was certainly upset when gaon accused him of killing soohyun again at the house, but once everything was revealed, yohan knew gaon had been manipulated, and there was no point in being upset, especially with elijah being threatened by sunah.
and again, if you read my summary, i truly believe that yohan will be coming back to gaon. it's pretty open to interpretation on whether they'll spend time apart due to elijah's treatment or if yohan is just going home and waiting for gaon. the time frame is up to viewers discretion.
however, what doesn't change is the simple fact that they will meet again and very soon - whether it's 5 minutes from yohan walking away, a week, a month, a year. who knows. but they will find each other for sure. all of that staring said so much and more, including happiness, forgiveness, love and understanding.
