Let's Explore a Metal-Rich Asteroid 🤘
Between Mars and Jupiter, there lies a unique, metal-rich asteroid named Psyche. Psyche’s special because it looks like it is part or all of the metallic interior of a planetesimal—an early planetary building block of our solar system. For the first time, we have the chance to visit a planetary core and possibly learn more about the turbulent history that created terrestrial planets.
Here are six things to know about the mission that’s a journey into the past: Psyche.
Tumblr media
1. Psyche could help us learn more about the origins of our solar system.
After studying data from Earth-based radar and optical telescopes, scientists believe that Psyche collided with other large bodies in space and lost its outer rocky shell. This leads scientists to think that Psyche could have a metal-rich interior, which is a building block of a rocky planet. Since we can’t pierce the core of rocky planets like Mercury, Venus, Mars, and our home planet, Earth, Psyche offers us a window into how other planets are formed.
Tumblr media
2. Psyche might be different than other objects in the solar system.
Rocks on Mars, Mercury, Venus, and Earth contain iron oxides. From afar, Psyche doesn’t seem to feature these chemical compounds, so it might have a different history of formation than other planets.
If the Psyche asteroid is leftover material from a planetary formation, scientists are excited to learn about the similarities and differences from other rocky planets. The asteroid might instead prove to be a never-before-seen solar system object. Either way, we’re prepared for the possibility of the unexpected!
Tumblr media
3. Three science instruments and a gravity science investigation will be aboard the spacecraft.
The three instruments aboard will be a magnetometer, a gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer, and a multispectral imager. Here’s what each of them will do:
Magnetometer: Detect evidence of a magnetic field, which will tell us whether the asteroid formed from a planetary body
Gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer: Help us figure out what chemical elements Psyche is made of, and how it was formed
Multispectral imager: Gather and share information about the topography and mineral composition of Psyche
The gravity science investigation will allow scientists to determine the asteroid’s rotation, mass, and gravity field and to gain insight into the interior by analyzing the radio waves it communicates with. Then, scientists can measure how Psyche affects the spacecraft’s orbit.
Tumblr media
4. The Psyche spacecraft will use a super-efficient propulsion system.
Psyche’s solar electric propulsion system harnesses energy from large solar arrays that convert sunlight into electricity, creating thrust. For the first time ever, we will be using Hall-effect thrusters in deep space.
Tumblr media
5. This mission runs on collaboration.
To make this mission happen, we work together with universities, and industry and NASA to draw in resources and expertise.
NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory manages the mission and is responsible for system engineering, integration, and mission operations, while NASA’s Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Services Program manages launch operations and procured the SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.
Working with Arizona State University (ASU) offers opportunities for students to train as future instrument or mission leads. Mission leader and Principal Investigator Lindy Elkins-Tanton is also based at ASU.
Finally, Maxar Technologies is a key commercial participant and delivered the main body of the spacecraft, as well as most of its engineering hardware systems.
Tumblr media
6. You can be a part of the journey.
Everyone can find activities to get involved on the mission’s webpage. There's an annual internship to interpret the mission, capstone courses for undergraduate projects, and age-appropriate lessons, craft projects, and videos.
You can join us for a virtual launch experience, and, of course, you can watch the launch with us on Oct. 12, 2023, at 10:16 a.m. EDT!
For official news on the mission, follow us on social media and check out NASA’s and ASU’s Psyche websites.
Make sure to follow us on Tumblr for your regular dose of space!

'We're reclaiming these traditions': Black women embrace the spiritual realm
There's a revived fascination with witchcraft and the occult. For Black women, mysticism’s appeal is about empowerment and taking up space in a world that often marginalizes them.

By Nadra Nittle
Afros. Saris. Sphinxes. Rainbows.
These are some of the striking images found in actress Rachel True’s new tarot deck and guidebook — “True Heart Intuitive Tarot” — released this month with a decidedly multicultural bent. Best known for her starring roles in the 1996 cult hit “The Craft” and the 2002 sitcom “Half & Half,” True has studied tarot for most of her life and wanted her guide to reflect the diversity of her New York City birthplace.
True’s tarot cards, illustrated by Toronto artist Stephanie Singleton, stand out for their inclusive imagery.
“I wanted it to be representative of the world around us,” said True, a rare woman of color to release a deck with a major publisher (Houghton Mifflin), who in 2017 completed a stint as a tarot reader at the House of Intuition in Los Angeles. “I just wanted to have as many skin tones and flavors as we could possibly get in there, and I’m happy about that because I know, for me, when I was reading books and looking at decks, they were all very homogenous.”
Having gained popularity as a parlor game in 15th century Italy — though some have linked them to Mamluk playing cards from Turkey and mystical imagery from Egypt — tarot cards are now widely used for divination and include symbolism that reflect life’s lessons and challenges. But the most established tarot decks have a European aesthetic, which can make it difficult for people of color to connect with them.
Fans have already told True that her collection, which contains both personal essays and card interpretations, is their first time purchasing a metaphysical product by a Black person. Born to a Black mother and a white Jewish father, the actress calls her book release no “small feat” for a woman of color.

Rachel True may be known for her iconic role in "The Craft," but her work in tarot has provided a source for healing herself and helping others.Houghton Mifflin
True follows in the footsteps of other Black artists and creatives such as Courtney Alexander, Manzel Bowman and Tayannah Lee McQuillar who have released tarot decks highlighting Black beauty, culture and experiences in just the last four years. These creators are part of a shift among Black people embracing the mystical and “the dark”: According to the Pew Research Center, the percentage of Black people who identify as spiritual but not religious rose from 19 percent in 2012 to 26 percent in 2017, which is roughly the same percentage of Americans overall who now identify this way.
Black women in particular have launched Black girl magik meetups, witchcraft conventions, hoodoo festivals and goth clothing lines. In addition to writing about tarot, they’ve written books about witchcraft, astrology and the Black gothic, tying these traditions to their cultural and artistic heritage.
But the desire to heal is the major reason these practices appeal to Black women, according to Yvonne P. Chireau, a professor and chair of the religion department at Swarthmore College and author of the 2003 book “Black Magic: Religion and the African American Conjuring Tradition.”
“Black women seem to have more of what I would call an orientation to the therapeutic, and that has been consistent,” Chireau said. “It’s not just about women’s power and witchcraft, and all these wonderful things that the white feminists were about. For almost every Black woman that I know who’s involved in any of these traditions, it comes down to the purpose of this work is ultimately about healing — and not just bodies but healing spirits. So, you won’t necessarily find them out there trying to do spells to remove Donald Trump.”
"For almost every Black woman that I know who’s involved in any of these traditions, it comes down to the purpose of this work is ultimately about healing — and not just bodies but healing spirits," said Yvonne Chireau, author and an associate professor of religion at Swarthmore College.Courtesy Yvonne Chireau
That’s a reference to the widespread media attention mostly white feminist witches garnered in 2017 for their ongoing spell to “bind” Trump — using a photo of him, the Tower tarot card, a candle and other accoutrements — until his exit from office. The spell highlighted the link between second-wave feminism and the New Age movement, both of which have faced criticism for sidelining and appropriating people of color. Since Black women were never centered in these movements, it’s not surprising that their current interest in mysticism may have more to do with healing themselves and their communities than with the current occupant of the White House.
An admirer of the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, True regards tarot decks as essentially “a shrink in a box.” In her book, she recounts how tarot helped her process a difficult childhood. She said her exposure to books such as Jung’s “Man and His Symbols” and Nietzsche’s “Beyond Good and Evil,” along with the tarot, helped to ground her as she grew up.
“You can look at them, and see where they hit you on a visceral level,” she said of the tarot. “I follow a Jungian tradition of tarot, so my interpretation tends to lead you down the path to examining yourself because if there’s one thing I know it’s that I can’t change anyone else. I can only work with myself and shift my own behaviors and perceptions. That’s why I like tarot.”
Although True is passionate about tarot, she doesn’t view it as a practice of the occult, a term she said has negative connotations. Instead, she views tarot as a way for people to tap into their intuition. Similarly, she doesn’t identify as a witch, despite playing one of Hollywood’s most iconic African American witches — Rochelle in “The Craft.” The follow-up to that film, “The Craft: Legacy,” debuted this week and will likely introduce a younger generation to the 1996 version as well.
New Yorker Mya Spalter grew up watching the original “Craft” and appreciating seeing a witch of color. Growing up with a Black Catholic mother and a white Jewish father, Spalter said that she can’t remember not feeling like a witch — “I was always a weird kid” — because of her love of nature. It helped that neither of her parents emphasized their religion to her or made her feel that any form of spirituality was off limits.
She ended up working at New York City’s oldest occult shop, Enchantments, and wrote a 2018 book about the experience and the basics of witchcraft, “Enchantments: A Modern Witch’s Guide to Self-Possession.” With humorous pop culture asides, especially about the ’90s R&B group Bell Biv DeVoe, Spalter’s book not only demystifies witchcraft but also sends the message that one can be a practicing pagan using common household ingredients such as salt, lemon and olive oil—a contrast to the Instagram witch aesthetic where photos of altars with expensive crystals, feathers and stones get thousands of likes.

The idea that a witch has to look a certain way, have a photo-ready altar or identify with Celtic traditions are some of the reasons Spalter said people of color hesitate to label themselves witches. Instead, they might identify with religions or folk practices rooted in traditional African spirituality such as Santería, Vodou or hoodoo. Others might not be fully aware of their family’s connection to such religious practices. Spalter said that some people have lightbulb moments: “Wait a minute — witchcraft — is that like what my grandpa did?”
The term “witch” has both a cultural and social meaning, Chireau said. “As for my own understanding,” she explained. “I think that a witch is a person who claims the power to heal and to harm, by spiritual and magical means.”
When her book “Black Magic” was first published nearly 20 years ago, she said, few others had written about the history of African American healing traditions such as rootwork and hoodoo. Now, Chireau is not seeing scholarly works about these customs so much as she’s seeing a wave of how-to books from Black women about various mystical practices—from folk magic to astrology to tarot. And on social media, she encounters many people who are spiritually eclectic, meaning they might follow a West African religion like Ifá but also practice astrology.

Former Atlanta fire chief suggests slavery was part of God’s plan for America
Historically, African Americans have weaved in aspects of Indigenous African spirituality with Christianity, making the mix of religious practices a tradition in Black communities. But Hollywood has long demonized traditional African religions in horror films and TV shows, a reflection of the way these spiritual practices were regarded in larger society.
“We didn’t know anything about African religions, which is where it all starts, right?” Chireau said. Those who practiced these faiths were often shown as “awful, pagan, idol-worshipping heathens who happen to be Black, and so you can rationalize enslaving them.” When magic is portrayed on screen, she added, “you don’t see the healer or the hard work of healing.”
Mecca Woods, author of the 2018 book “Astrology for Happiness and Success” bristles at how Black witches in film and TV shows are routinely portrayed as evil or have “unfortunate demises.” As a Black woman astrologer, she’s sometimes subjected to reductive or negative stereotypes, like being called Miss Cleo — the late spokeswoman for a psychic telephone hotline.
After the publication of her book, which shows readers how they can use astrology in their everyday lives, Black people reached out to tell her how excited they were to read an astrology book by a Black woman. Thelma Balfour’s 1996 book, “Black Sun Signs: An African-American Guide to the Zodiac” was one of the last astrology texts by a Black woman to garner significant attention.
Mecca Woods has practiced astrology for a decade and also hosts a podcast on the subject.Schaun Champion
“I remember gravitating to it because it was a Black woman who was writing about astrology, and I had never seen anything else like it before on the market,” said Woods, who has practiced astrology for a decade and also hosts a podcast on the subject.
Although some Black people, especially religious conservatives, may hesitate to embrace any form of divination, Woods said that the Black people she encounters have grown more open to what she labels “esoterica.” They are realizing, she said, that these traditions have always existed: “We’re in a space right now where we’re reclaiming these traditions.”
The American gothic is one tradition that Leila Taylor reclaims as heavily African American in her 2019 book “Darkly: Black History and America’s Gothic Soul.” The violence and dehumanization Black people endured during slavery and segregation have haunted them — and the nation overall — influencing their music, literature and other cultural artifacts.
“Toni Morrison’s ‘Beloved’ is a gothic novel; it’s a ghost story, it’s a haunted house story,” Taylor said. “It is influenced by a true story having to do with the horrors and the terrors and the ramifications of slavery. And the same thing with ‘Strange Fruit.’ Beautiful song with this combination of the scent of magnolias sweet and fresh and then this horror — this kind of grotesque imagery, the smell of burning flesh. It was inspired by an actual specific lynching.”
Black Americans have lived with fear, anger and sorrow for generations, said author Leila Taylor, and those emotions inevitably seeped into their art. Courtesy Leila Taylor.
Black Americans have lived with fear, anger and sorrow for generations, Taylor said, and those emotions inevitably seeped into their art. Across racial groups, however, Taylor has noticed a pronounced fascination with witchcraft and the occult. For Black women specifically, mysticism’s appeal is about empowerment and taking up space in a world that often marginalizes them. But the attraction to darkness, Taylor said, is also rooted in healing trauma. The recent wave of Black horror movies and television shows have allowed African Americans to confront their fears in a safe space, she explained.
For the horror movie star True, tarot has been that safe space. It not only helps her to self-soothe and make better decisions, it also connects her to the “old ways” of experiencing life.
“For Black people, let’s think about a time not that long ago where we really didn’t like to go to doctors, and we certainly didn’t go to therapists,” True said. “So that old woman in the neighborhood who could tell you something about yourself — she was the therapist, right? That’s been a long tradition in Black American history, so I believe some of the old ways are in tandem with what people believe now.”

on JULY 12, SU PARKER is pulled out of practice by a staff member in charge of the day to day of the trainees. “follow me, please” he asks the boy and leads the way towards KIM HYUNCHEOL’s office. he gives an apologetic look to Parker and sighs, as if sorry towards him. “there’s been some… issues with your immigration papers. we’re trying to fix that quickly so that it doesn’t affect your participation in future dreams but…” he trails off and looks away from the younger boy, picking up the pace to reach the office faster. once they reached the closed door, he beckons Parker forward, so that he enters first.
If Parker expects to find Hyuncheol sitting at his desk, stern face, furiously typing at his computer or rummaging through papers, it’s instead the six members of DBSD who greets him with confetis and blowout whistles. “SURPRISE!” they all exclaim at the same time. “this was a hidden camera!” Bae Siwoo announces with a little too much joy. “during the preliminary assessment, we were looking for the gem,” Lee Shinhae begins to explain. “we were looking for a fun performance with a lot of personality, and you totally nailed it.” he finishes. Kim Hyunbin is the next one to speak: “as our number one, you get two prizes: first a benefit to use anytime during the competition and second a lesson and surprise from one of us. who is up to you!” finally, Seo Haneul hands him two envelopes; one with the benefits details and another one with the lessons list. “Congratulations!” he tells the trainee and all the boys clap and surround Parker, advertising their own lesson, competing with one another to be picked. maybe Parker might have even heard the lyrics of the various “Pick Me” songs during this chaos.
THE CHOICES:
Choi Daehyun: Rapping Lesson + Night foodie tour in Hongdae
Yoo Woonjae: Acting Lesson + Attending an exclusive Valentino event together
Bae Siwoo: Variety Lesson + Backstage visit of SBS offices and variety sets
Kim Hyunbin: Performance Lesson + Experimenting time in music booth (create a song with him)
Seo Haneul: Dancing Lesson + Gaming session
Lee Shinhae: Vocal Lesson + Cafe lunch date
To select which one you want your muse to do, please respond to this submit with them picking the idol. Once you’ve posted the submit, you can submit this form to the lgcpoints blog:
TITLE: MUSE NAME ∙ FUTURE DREAMS S5 REWARD
- CHOICE: [ LINK ]
We’ll add the points you will receive while processing the form! As for the benefit, you are given two choices so send it to us via lgcmanager which option you prefer:
OPTION A: The PD of Future Dreams can reveal to you where you are ranking wise. The rank will be based on where your muse is currently (so this would be based on weeks 1-3 prompts along with other categories).
OPTION B: Since there will be groups performing for LGC Family Concert, you will be given a “viewer boost”. This means that you will gain a boost in votes for your muse’s TEAM, which can help you and whoever is in your group ranking wise. A note to consider is that due to the deadline of this submission and benefit, you won’t know until later on who your group members are.
Please send us your response ( both for the benefit and surprise ) before JULY 16, 2022 11:59PM EDT!
My visa? Parker could feel his stomach drop. Up until this point the company had helped him with all that paperwork and whatever he needed to help him stay in Korea— but why now? Why when they had just started to shoot Future Dreams. Had he done something wrong, or maybe they thought he had lied? For as confident as he normally was, the severity of the situation was enough to make his brow furrow and head to race. Maybe the company could do something— maybe they could ask for whatever it was to be postponed— he couldn’t leave now!
A cloud of panic and anxiety began to circle the young man as he quietly followed the staff into the room, head bowed.
“SURPRISE!”
The sound of multiple voices caused Parker’s head to shoot up, eyes wide and he stumbled backwards into a corner of the door frame. It took him a moment, though it felt like longer, to fully register the occupants of the room.
Mouth slightly agape, Parker could only stare at the members of DBSD as Siwoo began to explain to him that the reason he had been summoned had been a joke, and that the group had prepared something as a reward. How Parker even managed to even listen as his eyes floated from Hanseul, Shinhae and the others, he didn’t know, but somehow he did. Just like somehow he stopped looking like a stunned fish, swallowing and now smiling ear to ear.
“This can’t be real,” was the first thing out of his mouth as his eyes shined bright. He got to hang out with one of his idols— really?! In truth he wouldn’t even mind if he lost Future Dreams because this was worth joining in itself. “Is there really no way I can have a week and hang out with everyone?”
The question was earnest and earnest but even then Parker didn’t have to be told that he really had to pick just one.
Of the three options immediately stood out to him, and for a long aching moment, Parker struggled with himself to whittled his choices down to two… But in the end, his heart knew his answer even before he did. “Ah— I’ll go with Hyunbin-sunbaenim,” he spat out finally, a bit of bashfulness. Out of all of them Hyunbin was someone he admired the most, to get an opportunity like this was something he realized he couldn’t pass up easily.

Hey, back in 2016 when I was about 12 years old I submitted a mean anonymous ask making fun of you over that dinosaur post. I don't know why I did that, I just felt strongly about dinosaurs back then. I saw your reply and felt bad but forgot about it because I was 12. 6 Years later I remembered it and felt I owed you an apology. So, I'm sorry for leaving you a mean ask. I know this is some random dumb nonsense and means nothing to you but I was busting my ass trying to find this blog to say sum.
Hey, it happens. Between the post being made on an Asd low function day with alcohol, and the pak instinct in humans being super strong in one's tweens, combine that with mob mentality, and that's probably a big part of it.
The important thing is that you're acknowledging your mistake and have learned from it. I messed up way back then too and since learned my lesson about posting on bad days (took 5 years to do so). So don't worry too much about it.
Also, my screenname isn't the easiest for folks to spell. So sorry for the inconvenience on that front. EDT: Though i still haven’t learned not to post when tired af. Sorry if that’s all incoherent or comes off backhanded as that’s not the intent.

How Should I Prepare for the Essential Driving Test in Dublin?
Tumblr media
Preparing for the Essential Driving Test (EDT) in Dublin is a crucial step towards obtaining your driver's license and becoming a confident and responsible driver. The EDT is designed to ensure that new drivers are equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge, and attitudes to navigate the roads safely. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to prepare effectively for the EDT.
Understanding the Essential Driving Test (EDT):
The EDT is a structured training program mandated by the Irish government for all new drivers. It consists of 12 lessons covering various aspects of driving, from basic car controls to more complex maneuvers. The final step in the EDT process is the practical driving test, where your skills and knowledge are assessed by a qualified driving tester.
1. Complete the 12 EDT Lessons:
The foundation of your preparation is the completion of the 12 Essential Driver Training lessons. Each lesson is designed to address specific skills and scenarios that you'll encounter on the road. These lessons cover a range of topics, including car controls, changing direction, progression management, anticipation and reaction, and more. Ensure that you attend each lesson with focus and actively participate in the practical exercises.
2. Practice Regularly:
Practice is key to building confidence and refining your skills. Make use of the learner permit phase to clock in additional supervised driving hours with a qualified driver. Practice in various road conditions, such as urban, rural, and motorway driving. This hands-on experience will not only enhance your driving skills but also boost your confidence behind the wheel.
3. Review the Rules of the Road:
Refresh your knowledge of the Rules of the Road, as a solid understanding of traffic regulations is essential for passing the theory component of the driving test. Familiarize yourself with road signs, signals, and right-of-way rules. The theory test is a computer-based examination, and practicing with mock tests can help you get accustomed to the format and improve your response time.
4. Master Parking Skills:
Parking is often a challenging aspect for new drivers. Practice parallel parking, angle parking, and perpendicular parking in different locations. Mastering parking skills not only contributes to your overall driving ability but also ensures that you can confidently handle parking situations during the driving test.
5. Simulate Test Conditions:
Conduct mock driving tests under realistic conditions to simulate the actual test experience. This includes driving in the same type of car you'll use for the test, following the designated test routes, and adhering to the time limits. Simulating test conditions helps reduce anxiety and familiarizes you with what to expect on the day of the actual test.
6. Refine Observation and Communication:
Effective observation and clear communication are fundamental aspects of safe driving. Practice using your mirrors regularly, checking blind spots, and signaling appropriately. Ensure that your communication with other road users is clear and decisive. The driving tester will assess your ability to communicate effectively on the road.
7. Understand Vehicle Maintenance:
While the driving test primarily assesses your practical driving skills, having a basic understanding of vehicle maintenance is advantageous. Familiarize yourself with essential maintenance tasks, such as checking oil levels, tire pressure, lights, and brakes. This knowledge showcases your commitment to responsible vehicle ownership.
8. Learn from Mistakes:
If you make mistakes during practice sessions, treat them as learning opportunities. Identify areas where you need improvement and focus on refining those skills. It's natural to encounter challenges, and addressing them proactively will contribute to your overall growth as a driver.
9. Get Adequate Rest Before the Test:
Ensure that you are well-rested on the day of the driving test. Fatigue can impact your concentration and reaction time. Aim for a good night's sleep before the test to ensure that you are alert and focused during the assessment.
10. Arrive Early and Be Prepared:
On the day of the driving test, arrive at the test center well in advance. Bring all necessary documentation, including your learner permit and confirmation of your test appointment. Being well-prepared and arriving early helps reduce stress and allows you to approach the test with confidence.
Conclusion:
Preparing for the Essential Driving Test in Dublin is a comprehensive process that involves a combination of structured lessons, practical experience, theoretical knowledge, and simulated testing conditions. By actively participating in the 12 EDT lessons, practicing regularly, and addressing specific areas of improvement, you can enhance your readiness for the driving test.
Approach the test with a positive mindset, focusing on showcasing the skills and knowledge you've acquired throughout the EDT process. Remember that the driving test is not only an assessment but also an opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to safe and responsible driving. With thorough preparation and a calm demeanor, you can increase your chances of passing the EDT in Dublin and embarking on a journey as a licensed and confident driver on the roads of Ireland.

Microsoft has purchased Minecraft's educational version, and plans to develop a larger and more powerful version for classrooms.
Redmond Washington-based software company Software Corporation will collaborate with TeacherGaming LLC to transform MinecraftEdu into "Minecraft Education Edition". Financial terms were not disclosed.
Microsoft claims that the new version will have enhanced features that make Minecraft classroom-friendly, such as improved maps and coordinates that will aid teachers and students navigate the Minecraft world together. Developers will also improve the game's multi-player features so that a class of up to 40 students can collaborate.
The game lets players explore, fight monsters and construct complex structures out of blocks. It is a great way to teach math, according to Deirdre Quaranstrom, Microsoft's director of Minecraft education. Children can explore ancient temples or see the inside of the eyeball when playing the game as part of the science lesson.
Teachers can benefit from an online community that includes a mentorship program for connecting teachers who have experience with Minecraft to those who are just beginning to learn about it.
The game will be available in the summer, with free trial versions available to teachers and students. Microsoft will reveal pricing details prior to the end of the current school year, but says it currently plans to keep the cost at $5 per user per year.
Amazon is expanding its smart home ordering service to include a wide range of new appliances. Its Dash "replenishment" service lets users reorder common household items at the click of one button. Its initial form was a series of plastic buttons referred to as "Dash buttons" that were devoted to specific products. By pressing one, you can order a certain quantity of diapers or detergent.
The new Dash devices will function similarly, although they won't be dedicated buttons any longer. Brother connected printers will allow you to purchase toner replacement or ink. A GE washer will order detergent when it is running low. A Gmate glucose meter that monitors blood sugar levels in diabetics and automatically orders testing strips and blood-drawing lancets, will also reorder detergent when it is low. Users can sign up online and activate the service.
Amazon first announced the expansion to the Dash line in October; now the new products are being sold. Others in the works include Purell dispensers for hand-sanitizers, Samsung laser printers, "smart" home locks from Austin and others.

Some government and police officials may be seething because encryption makes it harder to identify extremists and criminals, but it turns out that a lot of businesses aren't putting much effort into protecting their data by encryption in the first place.
Sophos released Tuesday a new study that polled 1,700 IT executives in mid-sized businesses in the U.S. and Canada. 44% of those surveyed reported that they currently use encryption extensively, while 43% are using encryption at some level.
The encryption levels were lower in smaller businesses, with just 38 percent of businesses with 100 to 500 employees saying that they're using encryption extensively.
In the U.S., encryption rates are higher and 54 percent of respondents said they make extensive use of encryption. Australia was second , with the rate of 49 percent, while Malaysia was the highest with 26 percent.
The main reason for not using encryption extensively - as reported by 37 percent of those who responded to the survey - was a lack of budget, while 31 percent cited performance concerns.

Verizon is the most recent cellphone company to offer Web surfing to customers that doesn't count against their data caps.
You could be charged additional fees or slower speeds if your limit is exceeded. This is not difficult particularly if your device allows you to stream videos and play music on the move.
Verizon said it is interested in "sponsored information" as potential sources of revenue. A company can pay Verizon to allow users of their phones can browse their websites, view videos, or download their apps without using up their data allotment. Verizon states that brands that have signed to join include Hearst Magazines and AOL, which Verizon owns.
AT&T launched an official data program sponsored by AT&T in 2012, but only a few companies are participating.
T-Mobile, however, exempts a variety of music and video providers from caps, but doesn't charge them. It claims it wants to appeal customers who watch lots of videos without straining its network. To do that it lowers the quality of videos all over the board even for content which isn't a part of the caps. T-Mobile claims that customers can watch more.
Government regulators have asked AT&T and T-Mobile for more details on their strategies. While net neutrality rules last year didn't prohibit the practice, known technically as "zero rating" of selecting services that won’t be considered to be in violation of data caps (technically known as zero rating) Certain advocates say it can hinder innovation and make certain companies more attractive over others. Net neutrality refers to the idea that websites and apps should be treated equally by Internet service providers.

Teachers of autistic boy who froze to death when NYPD cop father 'made him sleep on garage floor in depths of winter' claims they 'flooded CPS with calls' because they were worried about his safety
Thomas Zubko-Valva, eight, froze to death on January 17, 2020, after his ex-NYPD cop father, Michael Valva, 43, locked him in a freezing garage
Principal Schneyer said that Thomas and his older brother Anthony appeared fine when they first started school in 2017, but they later started to come into class looking 'extremely emaciated'
The young brothers would come into school feeling cold and hungry, and Thomas would sometimes come to lessons with bruises and cuts on his face
The school started to 'flood' Child Protection Services with calls about the boys
Valva and his girlfriend are on trial for the child's murder
