you mentioned commenting on everything you read, and as someone who would like to start commenting more, do you have any tips? i feel like i never know what to write

oh hell yeah, big kudos to you friend for wanting to commit! here's some stuff that really helps me:

give yourself a rule! my rule personal rule is if i leave kudos on a fic, i have to comment as well. this took awhile to really work, because it felt like a lot of work at first, but now it works so well that even if i accidentally leave kudos on a fic that didn't particularly resonate,, i still leave a comment. maybe you can start small: leave a comment on all fics written by people you have on your dash/timeline/are subbed to, leave a comment on all fics you read during the day or before bed. start small, build a habit!

in the same vein: start small! don't give yourself a standard for comments! you do NOT have to comment with an essay, or even anything particularly impactful. literally just a leave a comment, any comment! i personally don't leave emoji comments because i have a formula (see below), but i do think it's SUPER cute to receive them because i get to respond with emojis and it's like you're dancing with someone across the room after making eye contact: 💃🪩✨

my own formula for low effort comments is: basic kind of compliment (this is lovely, this really resonated, this is beautiful, i really loved this) + thank you for sharing/writing (some other form of gratitude) or impact on me (so happy i found this, i'll be thinking about this)

you can then customize that (⬆️) formula with other things to make the comment longer! + something specific to the fic (i enjoyed the dynamics, a specific character, the way a scene was handled) + add one quote (or some, or many, mileage will vary)

a lot of times if i'm sleepy and on mobile my comments will literally just look like this : "wow this was so good! i loved the way you handled xyz, thank you so much for sharing this!!!!" and i leave comments like that a lot! am i self conscious about how repetitive i am? NO. i mean them! i don't comment on fics i don't like !! (see tip one)

as an aside, smut fic are sometimes harder to customize comment for depending on like length and theme, but some of the most deserving because explicit fic can get banger hit/kudo/bookmarks and then the comment ratio is absolute ASS so usually i make a point to be like this was sexy, hot, mindblowing + something extra complimentary like: fun/funny/really good dynamics. sometimes writers get a kick out of me saying a pwp is fun/funny, which i think is really cute.

just remember: start small to build the habit! don't pressure yourself to a certain standard! writers are always immensely grateful for comments that are complimentary! and the more you comment, the better you'll get at picking up on things to comment!

I know we all feel it, but god the way big media corps have a choke-hold on our nostalgia and wring it out for everything its worth until they take it too far and ruin it before moving onto the next thing is so soul sucking.

not everything needs a remake, or a sequel, or 15 sequels. it gets to the point where you just resent the original for inspiration the current abominations being put out there.

I know original media exists and it exists at high volume, but when all the hype and money is going to the unoriginal regurgitation of everything we ever held dear in the significant media phases of our life... it’s so fucking depressing.

okay I WILL complain about the paltry offerings we were given for 1d10 like... I know there are HUNDREDS of hours of footage and photos that are stored in a database SOMEWHERE and we got mostly already seen footage in the video. like the vertical vids were cute but so short?? only available on limited platforms!? the website won’t even load for most people?? like this could have been like... a movement of a day. people would have streamed videos of never before seen footage, bought merch. imagine a photobook? a dvd release? a full live album? people would have made that chart to #1 so quick. it just seems like a waste. such a low effort and the fans compensating for that by being SO excited anyway. yeah obviously the boys don’t want to do anything NEW, but there’s still so much we KNOW is in the vaults and we just... can’t see it. can’t hear it. and for WHY. it just blows my mind that there are millions of people willing to buy and stream any 1d content for the pure joy of it and yet... [rattles the cage bars] why NOOOOOT

Heartbreak Weather takes you through a journey of genre. the intro tracks hook you with their sound; the intrigue, the tease of a throwback sound infused with Niall’s unique ability to personalize and project musical influences in a way that is honoring, but not direct mimicry. he holds space for nostalgia, but doesn’t diverge from his own sound at any time in order to indulge the nostalgia too heavily. 

over the course of the album, his sound evolves along with his storytelling. the instrumentals are far more ambitious than his debut album with layers of angelic strings and melodic piano alongside guitar and rhythm regulars in a way that expands the sound and demands attention.

as a concept, the album is perfectly impersonal, easy for the listener to imprint on -- able to pour their own experiences into the words without interference from Niall’s own. the lyricism is straight forward, thematic. common motifs carrying throughout the album that tie the concept together, albeit loosely. despite the simplicity of the lyrics the storytelling is accessible, deceptively emotional, and incredibly visceral. 

overall, Niall’s sophomore effort is one of undeniable grown, both in terms of writing and sound. each track is a new offering, a new experience for the listener.
