I remembered that it's Friday (finally!!) and I should be doing some self-promotion today, so here it is! It's my take on how Wrecker lost his eye and got the scar on his face that I wrote for Whumptober 2 years ago. Enjoy!

SEEING RED

Red.

All that Tech can see is red. Standing outside the medbay in the middle of the hallway, he can’t stop watching his trembling hands drenched in blood. It’s not his, it belongs to Wrecker. His big brother, who after saving Tech’s life on the battlefield, is now at the medics’ care, battling for his own life.

Tech closes his eyes, trying to block the gory view, to no avail. The memory of how his hands ended up in such a state plays in his mind with vivid accuracy. It took only a second for their first mission on the battlefront, which they thought accomplished, to turn into a living hell.

Tech stopped running and turned around before pushing the button in his datapad to detonate the droid poppers he had placed on the enemy, and watched the clankers fall onto the ground with their circuits fried. A few feet away to Tech’s right, Hunter downed his last targets with powerful slashes of his vibroblade. Crosshair did his thing, taking out the stragglers perched on a close-by hill, while Wrecker tore apart droids with his bare hands and laughed uproariously. They wiped out the droid battalion, leaving none standing.

No longer having to worry about the enemy, Tech went to inspect the cargo The Batch was tasked by Commander Cody to intercept if possible or destroy otherwise. He jumped on the skiff and scanned the crates.

“What do we have, Tech?” Hunter asked through the commlink.

“Four crates, twenty-four kilos of Detonite each. And one crate full of thermal detonators. The cargo is intact.”

“Good. Let’s get that to the Commander.”

“Sir, yes, sir.”

Tech went to the skiff’s control panel to pilot the transport closer to the camp of the Republic’s forces. It wasn’t safe to delay delivering the explosive to someone who would properly handle it. By his calculations, more clankers were on their way.

“Can we keep a crate?” Wrecker asked.

“No!” Tech said, two more voices echoing in unison through comms.

“Oh, why not? C’mon! The GAR won’t miss one tiny crate. I can do good use o’ it.”

“I said no, Wrecker,” Hunter said in a commanding voice that brokered no argument.

Tech awaited Wrecker to grumble about the denial, but instead, he heard shots fired and Wrecker shouting his name in alarm and much closer than expected, “Tech!”

With Alan Wake 2 not getting a physical release to "save money", and a potential lack of physical release for Starfield (we're not sure at this point in time after a deleted support tweet said it wouldnt have one)

I am literally on my hands and knees begging people to care about physical game releases

Physical game releases save you money!! Digital store fronts do not reduce the price of games over time. They never have. They never will. Hate the $70 price point for new generation games? If gaming goes full digital, nothing will ever get cheaper outside of store sales.

Physical game prices drop because they take up actual physical space. And stores that sell them reduce the price to get rid of inventory, to make room for new inventory.

Physical space is not a barrier to digital store fronts, so they do not need to reduce prices. EVER.

Dont believe me? Heres the current price for NBA 2k23 on PS4 on the UK Playstation Store (Ignoring the game is currently free on Playstation Plus as of typing this):

And heres how much it costs to buy NBA 2k22 AND NBA 2k21 on the UK Playstation store:

Theyre the same price. Despite the fact that 22 and 21 are "old" sports titles that are no longer getting updates (because 23 was released)

Right now, a physical copy of NBA 2k23 costs less than £20:

(I cant find physical listings for Brand New copies of the older games. But trust me... its not £59.99)

And sure, this is a game you probably dont care about. But this is also a game where a new version gets released every year, where the physical price crashes every year. And yet the digital store front is still charging Full Price for a version 2 years out of date.

Its not just crappy sports games that fall into this Bad Digital Pricing. Heres a game that came out 6 months ago:

Youre paying almost half to buy a physical version.

How about something critically well received?

And one not on sale:

The list goes on and on and on. And this is me comparing to Game.co.uk. .... Generally considered one of the most expensive places to buy physical video games. If i were to go onto Amazon, TheGameCollection, Hit.co.uk.... i'd probably find all of those games even cheaper.

This isn't even getting into the fact that when you buy a digital game, only you can play it. You cannot give it to a friend. You cannot sell it to a company to get a bit of cash for the next big game. You're stuck with it. Forever.

But what about sales? Steam is 100% digital, and they have Good Sales, right?? Wrong. If you were following Steam sales over a decade ago, you'd see they were a totally different beast to what they are now. Steam Sales a decade ago used to be a 75% discount on AAA games 2-3 years old. Youre lucky to get 50% on something 5+ years old these days. Most things are really only 25-50% discounts. Once Steam had gained a virtual monopoly over the PC game market, they dramatically scaled back the savings on their sales. Sales on the Epic Games Store tend to be more dramatic than Steam sales these days.... because they're doing the same thing Steam did. Offer ridiculous discounts in order to gain market share. Once they have the market share, they will stop offering such good discounts.

Refund rights with digital storefronts are also pretty poor. Here in the UK, if you buy something online... you have 14 days to send it back to where you brought it from if you dont like it. Brought that shiny new game but realised after 5 hours of play during the weekend that you didn't like it? You can just send it back and get a refund. It might be store credit instead of cash, but at least you can do it. Physical stores vary, but you usually get 48 hours to return something. Again, might be to store credit - but you still get your money back in some form. .... With a digital storefront, you only get 2 hours to play the game and decide if you want to keep it. Once you have played more than 2 hours, youre no longer eligible to refund the game.

.... 2 hours isnt a lot of time when you think about it. The FF16 demo is about 2 hours long, and most of it is watching cutscenes with very little gameplay! :D

And none of this is talking about how peoples literal jobs and livelihoods depend on the physical stores they work in. If physical games no longer exist, people will lose their jobs. Or how physical copies preserve games for the future, as digital store fronts on older consoles get sunsetted. And you cant expect a 20+ year old console to occasionally receive security patches so your card data is safe on their digital store fronts. You can always stick a physical version of a game into a console, but there wont always be a storefront to download it from. ...... Or the game could just be pulled. For good. Usually, this is due to licensed music expiring. Or it could be like PT.... where it was pulled, and literally removed from your library so it could never be downloaded again. If you own the physical copy, none of that matters. You can play the game for as long as the copy works.

A digital-only future for AAA gaming is something we need to be actively condemning

Dont buy digital-only consoles. Don't buy a digital game when a physical copy exists. Buy from your local video game store instead of Amazon.

#im not talking about indies here btw - many of them cant afford a physical print run #its why they usually only get one after theyve already proven to be a Hit #i also still think stuff like Game pass is good value for RENTING the game #especially if its something youre not sure if youll like #but it certainly is pushing things towards an all digital future which i do NOT want #like play a game on it and then buy it physically if you really enjoyed it.....#please keep the physical market alive i am begging you

Video game studio helps Nova Scotia's Lunenburg make its mark in the world of golf

From Moe Norman to Mike Weir and Sandra Post to Brooke Henderson, Canada has a rich golf history.

But there's also a little-known golf hotbed in Lunenburg, N.S.

Located on the south shore of Nova Scotia, with a population of 2,396 according to the 2021 census, the port town is home to HB Studios, creator of the new "PGA Tour 2K23" video game.

Founded in 2000 by transplanted Englishman Jeremy Wellard, HB Studios collaborated with various publishers including Electronic Arts on an array of sports games. The studio recruited locally and all over the globe to get expertise in everything from cricket and rugby to soccer, football and golf.

"When I started here, I was definitely one of the local people," said HB Studios creative director Josh Muise, who has more than 15 years experience with the company. "I was born on the East Coast and grew up out here. I remember walking through the studio the first day and the number of different accents that I came across was certainly delightful and kind of interesting to find in a small sleepy fishing village in Nova Scotia."

The studio now also has an office in Halifax, with combined staff of about 100 and growing.

"This has become a really major project and it's become a very big game," Muise said of the golf title. "We're very lucky to be able to continue attracting world-class talent and growing the franchise."

Muise, 40, was born on Cape Breton Island and spent a lot of his school years in New Brunswick. While he admits to some reservations back in the day about moving to "a 1,200- to 1,500-person seasonal fishing village, as beautiful as it was in the postcards," he is now an unabashed fan of Lunenburg.

"It's been a wonderful transformation. The town has radically shifted in the last five, 10 years in particular, where you're seeing a lot of new businesses and you're seeing a lot of new people coming in. And it's really become a hotbed."

The trend toward working remotely has helped bring an influx of young high-tech workers looking to leave the city. The fact that Halifax is only an hour or so away adds to Lunenburg's attraction.

HB Studios mirrors that growth, as shown by the fact that its newest title features Tiger Woods on its cover.

"The thing that we're proudest of with that is that we feel like we earned the opportunity," said Muise, whose name is pronounced muse. "We went from an independent golf game, not all those many years ago, to building up to earning ourself the spot to having the PGA Tour licence come into play and being part of our partnership, ultimately bringing in 2K (Games) and everything that they offer, and then leading up to bringing in Tiger Woods as well.

"The team worked very very hard to put a great game out there. We worked with the community. We were receptive to the feedback. And we kind of grew together. So for it all to culminate with the best, I would say, single-sport athlete of all time on the cover of the box, nothing could feel better."

That first independent golf game was "The Golf Club," released in 2014, which eventually became "The Golf Club 2019 featuring PGA Tour."

In 2020, the studio released "PGA Tour 2K21" for 2K Games. A year later, 2K Games bought HB Studios and signed a deal with Woods.

Today the PGA Tour 2K franchise is the studio's main focus with 2K Games' expertise from its NBA franchise helping the studio with the complexities of golf licensing and partners.

Woods and Canadian Brooke Henderson are among the 16 playable pros available at launch in "PGA Tour 2K23," which was released Oct. 14 for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One and PC via Steam. Basketball icons Michael Jordan and Steph Curry also appear in the game.

"Being a Canadian studio, it was important for us to try and bring in a great Canadian icon like Brooke," said Muise.

"She's a great ambassador for the sport. She's an all time Canadian legend." he added. "And (we're) absolutely thrilled to have her as part of our roster."

The 2K franchise will have competition next spring, with Electronic Arts getting back into the game with "EA Sports PGA Tour," boasting video game access to all four majors including the Masters.

"We know that there may be a new product coming into the space but ultimately we feel very confident and very comfortable that golf is where we want to be," said Muise. "And golf is where we intend on staying. And we're going to keep building on our current success and pushing it."
