Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972 ) | Werner Herzog

Been thinking about this film a lot recently. It’s been living in my mind rent free. 

Such a meditative and pensive piece of cinema. One of the best deconstructions of male ego and desire I’ve ever seen. 

What Herzog manages to do with this film is inspired filmmaking. By all accounts, the making of the film is as unhinged as the film itself. 

I’ve seen the film a couple of times, yet I still feel an aggressive craving to watch it again, as if I’ve never seen it before. 

Recently I saw the film on the big screen at the BFI, and I swear I briefly fell asleep. I don’t know if it was because I was so exhausted from work, or if the film captured me and threw me into a dreamlike state.  The film possess a deeply hypnotic power to do so. 

The score is enchanting. The performances are terrifying, yet glorious. The film is stunning. 

Pure cinema.

I know Werner Herzog has rode the wave of being a meme for years but after watching his films & their style, his skill as an auteur & original vision is apparent. I’ve just finished watching Aguirre Wrath of God for the 2nd time in my life & 1/3rd of the way through Fitzcarraldo currently. Both are truly entrancing & highly recommended. Though they have similar major themes of being intense Man vs Nature tales, the wildly different protagonists & journeys make both incredibly unique & engrossing.

Absolutely eager to follow up with the Burden of Dreams doc
