Whumptober day 17
Prompt: drugged
Fandom: Salvation
Title: A Delayed Reaction
A/N: This takes place in season one after Grace and Darius have come back from Russia. It picks up with Darius in Harris’ office.
Harris is still seething with anger when Darius collapses in the doorway. Darius and Grace have no idea what they’re really dealing with. He knows Darius thinks he does; Darius always thinks he does. And now, the man’s collapsed after he shoved him against the wall. It wasn’t that hard though, he thinks as he rushes to Darius’ side. His secretary is looking over, talking with someone on the phone. He knows he didn’t push Darius hard enough against the wall to injure him. He’s seen the man take worse and still keep going.
Harris does a quick check of Darius’ vitals: pulse is fast, breathing uneven. His face is flush and generally warm to the touch. It’s not a dangerously high fever, but it’s quickly clear to Harris that he had nothing to do with this, which only comforts him for a brief second, especially when his secretary finishes with her phone call.
“Ms. Barrows passed out in holding. The guards called for an ambulance,” she says.
“Better call one for him, too,” Harris says, leaning against the doorway. His secretary nods and turns to make the call. Harris looks back to Darius, hoping that the man might show some sign of waking. He and Grace were in Russia where who knows what happened. Neither of them explained how suddenly the Russians were willing to work with them. Only to himself will he admit that part of his anger is how easy that deal was for them. Everything seems to come to Darius easily. The man talks, smiles, and winks his way through life to get what he wants. Whatever happened though, Harris would bet good money on this being related to something that went down in Russia.
Eventually, the ambulance comes, forcing Harris out of his thoughts. He opts to ride in with Darius, but he tells himself that it’s to check on Grace. They’re going to the same hospital, though Grace is already halfway there, he estimates. Nothing’s changed with Darius, though there was some urgency to get Darius to the ER. Harris asks about Grace, but the paramedics don’t have any news.
The mystery only deepens in the ER when the doctors have no explanation. Both have had an x-ray and CT scan, which reveal nothing of use other than some hairline fractures in Darius’ ribs. Both are bruised and scratched underneath their clothing, but not serious enough to explain their continued unconsciousness. Bloodwork will take longer. Until that’s back, Harris is left sitting in between the two beds. Darius and Grace have been changed into hospital gowns and attached to equipment to monitor their vitals. It fills the silence with steady beeping.
“Darius!” Liam’s frantic voice startles Harris. He hadn’t expected anyone other than the doctors or nurses to come in. “Harris, what happened?” Liam is quickly at Darius’ bedside, opposite of Harris.
“They don’t know,” Harris says. “It probably happened while they were in Russia, though. Do you have any idea what happened there?”
“Other than they got accused of murder? No. Darius wasn’t sure that they were coming back, though.”
“You heard from them?”
“A couple times, but not for the last two days almost.”
“Did Darius come back after landing?”
“He texted to say that he was on his way, but then he texted that there was something he had to take care of. He never said anything more, though. They really don’t know what’s going on?”
“There’s cuts and bruises on both. Darius has some minor fractures on his ribs, but nothing that explains their current state. Hopefully, the bloodwork will reveal something.”
“Bloodwork?” Liam runs a hand through his hair, a worried look on his face as he looks from Darius to Harris.
“There’s not much more that can be done at the moment, Liam. They’re both stable. We should be happy about that.”
“Yes, but they’re unconscious and no one knows why.” Liam’s voice rises as he speaks.
“Liam, they’re in the hospital. They’ve got the best doctors and nurses in the region. There isn’t a better place for them to be at the moment.” Harris doesn’t try to keep the exhaustion from his voice. Since Grace and Darius first took off to Russia, he’s had too little sleep. That coupled with the stress of worrying over if they were safe, trying to find a way not to arrest Grace, and, now, hoping that nothing serious was wrong with them, is taking a toll on him. He tries to cover up the yawn that escapes.
“I… I can sit with them for a while,” Liam says. “If you want to take a break.”
Harris starts to shake his head, a no on his lips without even thinking, but then he feels how tired and heavy his body feels. The adrenaline that got him through Darius passing out and hearing about Grace, then here to the ER with them has long worn off leaving him feeling sick. Even a quick nap, twenty, thirty minutes would be enough to take some of the edge off.
“Okay.” Harris is on his feet quickly, covertly using the bed next to him to steady himself. “Keep me updated, okay? I’m not leaving the building.”
“I’ll give you a call if something happens?”
Harris nods, not bothering to question how Liam has his number. It’s probably some backup plan that Darius has. The man usually has a backup plan for his back up and then another backup plan.
He’s slept off and on for a few hours when Liam calls him. They’re awake and that’s all he hears before jumping off the couch in the staff lounge that they let him use and rushing back into the room.
“How are they,” he asks as a doctor is examining Grace, who is awake but in pain from the pinched features on her face. Harris glances over to Darius, who’s curled on his side, face hidden under a blanket someone must’ve given him. It wasn’t there when Harris left.
“Groggy and hurting, but they’re awake and alert enough, so that’s progress,” the doctor says, finishing his examination of Grace. She quickly turns on her side to bury her head in the pillow.
“Any idea of what was wrong?”
“Drugged. Something that would make them more inclined to talk. It should’ve worn off by now if they’ve been back in the States for the last twelve hours, but it seems to be lingering in their systems.”
“Is it dangerous?”
“Their vitals are still off. Mr. Tanz’ reaction is worse, though part of that is likely the concussion he already had before being dosed and impact injuries. The good news is that his hearing will recover, but that’s going to take some time.”
“Hearing? He was talking just fine back in my office.”
“He lip re… reads,” Grace says, voice muffled by the pillow.
“Of course he does.”
“Said that… too.” Grace pauses for a long moment. “A car exploded.”
“A car exploded?” Harris looks at Grace, then as Darius and runs a hand through his hair. When this is over and Darius can stand up without falling over, they’re going to have a talk about acceptable danger and putting in dangerous situations.
“Not his fault.”
“It never is.” Harris sighs.
“It really wasn’t.” Grace turns her head and lifts it off the pillow to make her point. The effort makes her wince. “And he protected me from it.” She gasps at the effort of keeping her head up and speaking, quickly turning her head back into the pillow to block out the light.
“Okay. I’ll leave it be.” Harris may be angry with Grace, but he’s not going to argue with her about this. Darius does seem to be the more injured of the two, which matches up with her story and lying would take her too much of an effort. Besides, he knows Darius more than he knows Grace. Darius would put himself in danger before he’d put another, especially someone he trusts.
