A Saltier analysis of the Art of Star Wars Rebels (Part 2)

So…..after my initial post you can find here more issues with the book where pointed out to me/I just sat looking through it noticing even more issues so….consider this a part two to my original post going over even more issues I have with the Art of Star Wars Rebels. Obviously there will be salt so if you enjoyed the book a lot and don’t want that view tainted please don’t click on below the cut. Also beware major spoilers for Rebels.

So first off we’re going to kick off with talking about some items that were very strangely missing from the book. Now full disclosure @findswoman really was the one who noticed this issue but it seriously deserves mention and I am stunned I missed it but, why are Loth cats and Loth Bats not ever mentioned in the book?

Loth Cats are a near constant presence within the series, they play some minor roles even in destroying a droid and helping distract guards. Loth bats similarly inspire the gliders that the kids use to rescue Hera! Said gliders make it into the book

Why aren’t the loth bats, the inspiration for said gliders, even in the book as well?

Another potentially controversial criticism I have is for the cover for the deluxe edition itself.

Some people may love it which is fair but personally I am not as fond of it as I am of the original cover. I get that they were trying to get a feel of the holocron in the cover but it just doesn’t vibe with me at all and I feel like they could have done something more special for the deluxe cover.

Speaking of holocrons, they do not get a proper showcase within the art book. Here is the page where it is mentioned and notice how it talks about the map, not the holocron itself.

Hell, you barely see it in the image in the book! Why? The holocrons are a big deal in the show, why are they not getting showcased when items that only make an appearance in one episode do? Even if other media showed off the holocrons, this is the art of Star Wars Rebels, if it was important to the show, it deserved a place in the book. Instead they waste space on things that were not important or even really shown in the show. Like Tatooine gets two full pages in the book:

Some of those images almost look like shots from Episode 4 which brings back the question of what the heck is this doing here? (Which I found myself asking way too much when looking through this book). Again this book should be a celebration of Rebels, not all of Star Wars. Those pages could have been used to show off key elements from the show that for unknown reasons got cut from the book.

There is just a lot of what feels like filler or wasted space in the book, for example Rex, Obi-wan, Vader, Yoda, Bo-Katan and Palpatine get two pages devoted to their characters while other main characters from the show get only one page or only half a page like in Choppers case. Zeb, Kallus, and Hera also all do not get their alternate season designs shown off in the book while Kanan, Sabine and Ezra do. Hell Rex even got an extra half a page to show off designs that never made it into the show and seemingly only exists to push Filoni’s headcanon that Rex was there with Han Solo.

Why are the main characters not allowed to be the unashamed stars of this book? Why did the editors feel the need to waste space with characters who are not the stars and have their spot to shine in other media? Original characters for this show should get full and multiple pages for their characters, not characters who have appeared in other media and probably appear in other art books.

If other side characters like Tristen and Usra Wren or Ketsun where getting these full or two pages I wouldn’t be quiet as annoyed because they are all original characters for the show, but those characters only got half a page while again, characters from other media like Saw and Mon Motha got a full page. I will say this until I am blue in the face but the original characters created specifically for Rebels should have been the true stars of this book, instead they are getting gypped and the short end of the stick while other characters the team thinks is more popular are given the spotlight. (I am not showing the pictures because, as is, this post is getting ridiculously long but I will happily share them in a reblog if anyone wants to see this).

They even included characters who never appeared in the show in the book

This is the very definition of wasted space. This page could have been used for undercover Chopper designs or season 3 or 4 of Hera and Zeb designs or one of the many many things that never made an appearance in the book that by all accounts should have been like Kanan’s lightsaber or Zeb’s bo-rifle. Instead we get stuff of Director Krennic.

Even things that had their fair share of content, still managed to miss the mark in some cases.

The Ghost in total has about six pages devoted to it which even includes concept art for it that was never used which is not a problem at all. In fact I love that! This is what I bought the book for, to see concepts and art for things that were at some point going to be in the show but were cut for one reason or another. The book would have benefited if it contained way more concept art for things like this like for example what Filoni imagined Lasan to look like or other concept designs for Zeb or hell talk about Kallus’s early days when he was originally a Chiss. Interesting stuff like that which wasn’t explored in the show but still exciting and interesting.

My big issue with the Ghost sections (yes sections) is that instead of putting everything related to the Ghost together for some reason the pages are split into two different sections within the book.

(Don’t ask my why they decided to throw concept art of the millennium falcon to go with that little tidbit instead of more concept art for the Ghost, just know this is on my shitlist too)

These are pages 48 through 51 of the book. The next time the Ghost appears is way later near the end of the book

Pages 150 and 151! Some of the split concepts for things can be explained by the fact that the book is split into several sections: Beginning, middle, and end of the show. However this does not give a satisfactory explanation as to why the Ghost’s concept art is split across two sections and not even evenly! Why not put all of the information for the Ghost all together in one section so if someone was looking for something specifically for reference or something they don’t have to look through the whole book to find it because the info is all over the place? Directly following the later pages is the Phantom II so maybe the logic was they didn’t want to just toss the Phantom in without any other context? Which….doesn’t work cuz the Ghost honestly feels thrown in for no real reason. The Phantom II being separated from the Ghost and The Phantom would have been fine because the Phantom does come in later so it being in the section devoted to later parts of the series would have been fine.

Of course, I can’t really say there is a section for the Phantom, that one image you saw back on page 50? That is the only reference the original Phantom ,something that was in the show for two seasons, get’s. One image and maybe a second but it feels more like an image of the back of the Ghost and not one of the Phantom. Meanwhile the Phantom II get’s two pages entirely to itself. Why the difference? Both ships were in the series for two seasons, why not some images of the inside of the Phantom or more shots from different angles? Why does only the Phantom II get these?

I really cannot fathom why they skimped out on one ship and gave two pages to another when both had equal importance.

Now I mentioned before that the layout of the book may have influenced the decision to split the pages talking about the Ghost, but personally I am not a fan of the layout of the book. It makes things confusing and doesn’t flow well. Here is the table of contents:

At a glance this seems fine and a nice nod to the series having four seasons, but notice there are no sub categories like textbooks that have key concepts in the chapter and what page they start on. So if you wanted to focus on character models? You would still have to spend a lot of time flipping through the sections to find what you were looking for. Personally I would have rather the book be divided by content: Characters, props, and environments. That way all things that are alike would all be group together instead of broken up into four sections across the book. Of course other art books could be laid out like this and people may like this method. This particular point is a bit more nitpicky and me being a person who was far more interested in character concept art then anything else.

I briefly touched upon this in my part one analysis of the book, but this issue rears its ugly head again in the issue of things not getting good labeling leaving the reader having to read the mini paragraphs or searching the book to figure out what it is or what is going on.

Me too, too bad the book can’t be bothered to tell you anything about these. When I was searching for anything to tell me what these images among many others in the book where, I noticed this

Which for a bit I couldn’t figure out what it was, notes accidentally left in? Some obscure reference to what it was supposed to be? Looking at other pages I noticed repeat notes that looked the same so I was starting to get even more confused until when looking through the cover pages, I finally spotted this:

Which okay fine they shorthanded the artists names in the credits right be the art….but then I noticed that not every piece of art in this book has any sort of credit along with the fact that quite a few have no label for what it's supposed to be. And while one could argue that those places are iconic enough to be recognized I have to disagree. Not everyone knows or follows all Star Wars Media that is a fan of the show. Not everyone has a great memory of the episodes within rebels or places that most would think are familiar. There is no reason to not put in a small label next to the artist credit so fans know what it is supposed to be. I could guess or try to look it up but I shouldn’t have to, the book should tell me what it is!

Even worse is the inconsistency on if an artist gets credit for the art they made. Like this one here:

No credit or anything, we have no clue who created this piece or why there is nothing here to indicate who did, and that is not fair to the person who created this piece. (I checked the next page as well even and there was nothing)

Also yes that image above the artist’s credit is another concept art from episode 4 which was slapped on there for who knows why. Again this should have been more art from Rebels. This is not, nor should it be, the art of Star Wars. It is the art of Star Wars Rebels. No concept art from other media has any business being in this book.

So many aspects of this book feel rushed or slapped together with no real rhyme or reason even though it was delayed in its release and then released early! Why? It just doesn’t make any sense and isn’t fair to the fans of this show who adored it and wanted to get this book to learn more about the show that for many fans, including myself, got me into Star Wars. We deserve more respect than this.

This book truly feels like a quick cash grab, not the thank you to the fans of the show it should have been.

Again I cannot stress this enough, if you like the book that is fine. But you cannot blow off and ignore the voices of people who are not satisfied with this book and expected so much more from it then it gave us.

@EiffelSavin: One possible direction for the sequel is for it to take place a few years after the original show. Hence the concept art. But this is still under discussion and would also depend on who finances the series

@Bfahome: I heard rumors in the past that there's a "full" version of Oban's English opening, "Never Say Never". Are those rumors true and, if so, who would be the ones to have it? Would it even exist still?

@EiffelSavin: I'm not sure about this. I think the only version I ever heard was the opening version. For your info our US partners felt very strongly about using that song. I gave my OK because it was pretty catchy, even though the op credits were created to match Yoko Kanno's title song.

@MattGiusti: The lack of Sul on this list is very sad.

@EiffelSavin;: Sul came right after and would certainly have fared better if the question was who's your favorite alien character. Bear in mind that the list of choices here included some of the main characters of the show, like Jordan and Aikka and that one could only give a single answer.

@rhodanum: I'm quite surprised at how high Spirit ranked (higher than Stan, Don and Maya!) and that Jordan ranked higher than Aikka. The latter is especially surprising, given the gigantic number of fanworks (fanart, fanfic) featuring Aikka or Aikka x Eva, compared to Jordan or Jordan x Eva

@EiffelSavin: Aikka ranked first in some territories but overall Jordan came first - among the voters at least. I would be interesting to see if female and male voters voted equally - or predominantly - for one or the other...

@EiffelSavin: Good question indeed but bear in mind their leader crashed on Oban and that there were fierce rivalries between the rest of chiefs. This must have slowed them somehow. Plus there's a new Avatar! 🙂

@EiffelSavin: Finding funding on the French market as proven more difficult than anticipated but we haven't given up and have also started working on an animated series adaptation, possibly with a more "radical" artistic direction. More news hopefully soon...

@EiffelSavin: Here are the programs the team used for the animation: Pencils (well sharpened), large and thin Erasers, and most important: thousands and thousands of sheets of Paper 😉

@SonicMrgame2017: Yeah, but, the animation was done in cels or you guys used some kind of digital ink? PD: Respects!!!! I love handrawn animation

@EiffelSavin: Oban used digital paint and compositing. When we produced the series it was the very last days of painted cells in Japan, where it lasted longer than in other countries. I think the last series that used painted cells was "Sazae-san". 🙂

@EiffelSavin: Spirit did not make it to the final 3 so he was eliminated & returned to his home planet. Regarding Rick, his job was done so he went back home too. We had crazy plans of making a sequel with him starring as a private PI (!) Who knows we may reuse that in 1 form or another

@EiffelSavin: That was my notes, yes: Maya cut off from her family because of her choice to become a racer with Don, and Don having old parents that died early. Thus no grand parents for Eve to turn 2. But since we never go beyond that in the story, U can make up your own idea on backstory 🙂

Sarada’s Sharingan | Boruto Theory

heres a theory about Sarada, cuz duh mate, i idolize her. shes a cute tsun-tsun, and has much potential. sorry if theres like spelling mistakes, not grammar. i may use grammar in some sentences, some not. please like if you enjoyed~

Most of this is from Quora, paraphrased and applied to this theory subject. This covers her cannon MS design, what triggers her MS, and evolution.

Now, now. Here’s just basically random things about Sarada’s sharingan. Let’s start with... What is the Sharingan?

Sharingan is developed when an Uchiha member experiences a powerful emotion (about a person close to them). During this emotional moment the brain releases a special form of chakra that affects the optic nerves and transforms the eye into the Sharingan.

Evolution

So. Her evolution of the Sharingan. From now, (ep 90) we still only had one tomoe. She should atleast have two, in my opinion. Too bad, though. Sasuke Uchiha, awakened double tomoe when he was fighting Haku. Would they be able to unlock their second tomoe when under stress, and saving someone they are really close to? Haku appeared episode nine from the original Naruto series, which is really fast for Sasuke to get double-tomoe. But then again, Sasuke unlocked his sharingan in a very young age. He unlocked second tomoe in his right eye first. Example:

It is unclear when we see his left eye unlock it, but just know that it’s one eye first after another.

So basically, here’s a list when we see his Sharingan unlock.

One tomoe:

He unlocked during the Uchiha massacre.

Double tomoe:

On the Great Naruto Bridge, part I of Haku and Zabuza.

Three tomoe:

Fighting Naruto at the Final Valley of the End.

I’ve been noticing a pattern, here. You first unlock the Sharingan when experiencing a great and intense emotion. For Sarada, it was seeing her dad for the first time. The double tomoe, you unlock protecting someone close to you, or INTENSE training. Triple tomoe, you unlock fighting the person who was close to you.

Let’s compare this to Itachi. When Team 2 was given the task of guarding the Fire Daimyō, the company was attacked by Obito. Tenma attacked Obito and was killed in the fight. This emotional moment caused Itachi to awaken his Sharingan. Credit to Henmath Mouthkiri on Quora. :)

This was on episode 453: The Pain of Living. It can also be retrieved in itachi Shinden: Book of Bright Light. I’m not too sure on him getting his second tomoe, and third tomoe. But, we do know how he got his Mangekyo Sharingan. Probably, just witnessing Shisui's death to protect the village was traumatic enough for Itachi to awaken his Mangekyou. Itachi, the only person I know so far to manifest two tomoe in one go, was a deep thinker. The death of his teammates and his will to do something about it though his friends were already dead made him desperate. But his will against the desperation held on due to his inquisitive nature (by which he kept himself inside the desparation long enough to generate enough of the unique chakra) and he managed to unlock enough power for the two tomoe sharingan. It can be that this is how an Uchiha is able to contain and harness the power of the Sharingan. Credit to JNat on Animestackexhange :) Credit to Tehol Beddict on Quora, too!

All in all, Sarada will get double tomoe, soon. But don’t get your hopes high in case that doesn’t happen in the few next episodes.

Mangekyou Sharingan

How will Sarada Uchiha retrieve the Mangekyou Sharingan? It’s like experiencing unlocking the Sharingan but the trauma is 10x more. Sasuke unlocked Mangekyo Sharingan by witnessing Itachi’s death. Even though he didn’t murder him, Itachi died of tuberculosis or lung cancer. Same with Itachi, he witnessed Shisui’s suicide. Itachi was a deep thinker, so no wonder he’d get his double-tomoe in one go, and Mangekyou Sharingan. Itachi lost everyone, and so did Sasuke. Sasuke couldn’t get Mangekyou because of how young he was, and he would have that much chakra prepared for the doujutsu. Many theorists believe that Sarada will fight Boruto, I don’t think so. They don’t have a rivalry like Sasuke and Naruto. They have a protection relationship, and which is “I want to get stronger for I can protect you.” Either Sasuke or Sakura will die for Sarada, to get her MS. Naruto is out of the question, since he will be training Kawaki, he won’t be Sarada’s mentor. Please note, not every Uchiha needs to experience death, I want to see somethign creative and peaceful for Sarada to push aside all the hatred, but hey! This is just a theory. :) And, she’d just awaken it by strong feelings, like Obito. He didn’t lose anyone, but just his emotions.

Sasuke

First of all.. look at Boruto.

Besides the fact that Boruto is fine ;) look at everything. Now, this is one of the most obvious theories.. but look.

Boruto has the following from his master, Sasuke..

Kusanagi

Cloak

Headband

Now, it would be reasonable if Sasuke gave Boruto his headband. Like in the Momoshiki Arc, I can see that. But his weapon? His cape? Hmm? Be reasonable, look. The sword he has had since a teen? His cloak that hides his arms, and his headband is ok. I personally, don’t think Sasuke will die. Kishi will lose about 80% of the fanbase if Sasuke dies. (i’d stay tho :) ). In my opinion, the flashforward is bait. I have some pictures on what Kishi has drewn himself for promotional pictures of Sarada grown up. She has an MS, if you were wondering. ;)

I couldn’t find much and think about the rest, but Sakura has a big way up ahead.

Sakura

Most definitely. She will die in my opinion, for Sarada to move on. It’s not because I hate her, but this is one reason on how I imagine Sarada getting her Sharingan upgraded. Why, though?

Sakura is irrelevent in Boruto now. She isn’t a main character anymore, she doesn’t play a role.

We all know Sarada and Sakura’s relationship. Sakura even raised her by herself. Sakura is a amazing opportunity. Also, her death will not only be amazing for Sarada’s development.. but her relationship with Sasuke, too. Wouldn’t it be interesting to see Sarada start falling in the Curse of Hatred by that and Sasuke stepping in to help her not commit all the sins and mistakes he did? Not everybody finds it easy to work at home, what with the fridge always there to distract you and those cupboards that suddenly need reorganising. Thankfully there are some great spots not too far from school where you can get your homework head on. All of London’s public libraries are free to join and have free WIFI - Charing Cross, Westminster and Holborn are the nearest to school, while the British Library near St Pancras is a great place to feel inspired. While speaking on the phone with her not only was she rude, almost shouting at me (as i pressed on further ) . She told me she would send the company policy booklet to show that electrical wiring is not covered, and a letter stating the case was closed and in detail what the whole case is about. A week and a half has gone by (she said couple of days) This is the most annoying thing. She was rude, unhelpful, unwilling to help, and just taking the pee with the whole thing. I just find it sketchy that the letter has not been made, and no further actions or anything has happened (i have also opened another case about another incident - no info .. still) . Since insurance rates are ridiculously high for new drivers like me, I was thinking that if my parents could possibly buy a car for me to drive but put it under their name, and have it insured under their name so its cheaper since they're much older and have a lower insurance rate than I would. But I heard someone said that somehow insurance companies find this out and somehow find a way around this so the tactic i just suggested won't work. Anybody have any experience with this?""

I just had to bring my car to the shop for a repair. They ended up needing to keep it. Now a rental was covered under the warranty. So at least the rental was covered. But the guy had me signing off on insurance and what not. I guess the insurance on my car would cover the rental if I had an accident. But they would take from my cars deductible. So I basically signed off on a Collision Damage Waiver and also personal accident insurance. I did decline supplemental liability insurance though. He left Calum and Fen to it and returned to his own station. The half-finished sketch he needed for his first appointment greeted him, reminding him that despite what he preached to his studio crew, he was woefully underprepared for the day ahead. Rectifying that required his full attention, and the next time he glanced up, Calum was well into his own work, covering whatever ink Fen had on her chest.

Calum’s gaze was intense, his tongue caught between his teeth. Brix liked to talk as he etched ink onto his clients. Not Calum. He had a gentle touch with his needle, but his concentration was absolute. No small talk for Fen, not that she looked like she wanted it. Poor girl was in her own world.

Curiosity burned Brix’s soul. Calum specialised in dot work, but his trademark intricate style wouldn’t work here, whatever Fen needed covering. Cover-ups needed dark ink, and lots of it, which made it tricky to create a piece that actually meant something.

Still, he’d run out of time to obsess over Calum for now. The studio door opened and the biker dude who was to be Brix’s canvas for the day arrived. The back piece was large and complex, and kept Brix busy for a couple of hours. Fen was long gone by the time he took a breather, and Calum nowhere to be seen either.

Brix abandoned the biker dude under the guise of making a cuppa and went to the backroom staff used as a break room. He half expected to find it empty, but Calum was at the table, engrossed in something on the studio’s iPad. “Watcha doing?”

Calum jumped. “Fuck. Oh, it’s you.”

“Expecting someone else?”

“What?”

“You jumped like a cat with a cucumber.”

Calum stared blankly. Clearly he hadn’t seen the YouTube videos of cats shrieking at vegetables. “What are you up to? Anything fun?”

“I’m trying to get a new phone, but I can’t seem to get a contract.”

“Why not?”

Calum shrugged in a way Brix had come to realise meant he was going to give a half answer. “Credit history must be fucked.”

“Why would it be fucked?”

Calum got up and went to the sink, rinsing out his tea mug. “I borrowed a lot of money a few years ago. I got behind with the repayments pretty much straightaway, nothing major, but I haven’t done much to repair the damage since.”

“And your old phone was in your ex’s name.” That made sense. Inactivity on a bad credit file was almost as bad as fucking up in the first place. “Which means you’ve been invisible for a while, eh?”

“Yup. The bank only gave me an overdraft on my old cash account because I’ve had it since I was twelve.”

Brix hadn’t known banks existed when he’d been that age. Too busy pinching crates of mackerel and wondering why the younger fishermen were so entrancing as they hauled their catch ashore. “So what are you going to do?”

“Dunno. It’s not like I even need a fucking phone. Who would I call?”

“Whoever you called with the phone you had before you came here.”

Calum laughed humourlessly, and Brix felt like he was missing something totally fucking obvious. Then he recalled his own spell in the wilderness when he’d returned to Porthkennack, how his phone had found its way to the bottom of the cliffs, and it had been weeks before he’d seen fit to replace it.

“What about a SIM-only deal? I’ve got an old iPhone at home you could borrow, and paying the bill might help your credit score.”

“You’ve done enough for me. I can’t borrow anything else from you.”

“Buy it from me, then. I was gonna sell it to Jory for fifty quid.”

“Fifty quid? For an iPhone? Piss off, mate.”

“You think I’d lie to you?”

Crickets.

“Seriously?” Brix frowned. “It’s a phone, Cal. And I’m not a fucking liar.”

“I know, it’s just—”

“Just what?”

There was a long pause before Calum finally turned around.

“I’m sorry, okay?” He stuck his hand in his back pocket and pulled out a few notes. “I’m not used to anyone who’s not my mother genuinely giving a shit about me.”

“I give a shit.”

“I know, and I’m sorry I’m being a twat about it.”

Brix wanted to ask if being a twat about it included neither of them mentioning the drunken kiss that kept coming back to him at inappropriate moments, but for reasons he didn’t quite understand, he couldn’t. Instead, he took Calum’s money and left him to it.

Garrett Leigh is an award-winning British writer and book designer, currently working for Dreamspinner Press, Loose Id, Riptide Publishing, and Fox Love Press.

Garrett's debut novel, Slide, won Best Bisexual Debut at the 2014 Rainbow Book Awards, and her polyamorous novel, Misfits was a finalist in the 2016 LAMBDA awards.
