Love Again
Synopsis: Childhood friends, to strangers, to… Nothing? Jae is quite the puzzle, figuring him out won’t be the easiest thing you do. But you do want to try.
Word Count: 4,2 k
Genre: childhood friends au!, concert au!
Warnings: none
Member: Jae, ft. the rest of Day6
A/N: I had so much fun writing this work. I tried to make the concert experience a lot like my own, although I have never gone to a Day6 concert. I gathered all my information from Google so sorry if anything is different from the actual concert!

Waking up in yet another chilly morning in Korea, you think of every step that has led you in this dorm, in a country quite literally across the world from your home. The university you attended offered almost all its students the opportunity to study abroad for a whole semester, to learn, see and explore, not only the country and your studies but also one’s self.
Most students jumped at the opportunity to leave home and travelled within the first year. Not you. You wanted to keep your head in the game, to fall in love with your studies before falling in love with another country.
So there you were, only a semester away from finishing your studies, in Korea. Why Korea? Well, why not? It was so different from anything you had known back home… You figured if you were going to do this, you would go all in.
Being completely honest, K-pop definitely helped. You couldn’t lie to your own self, seeing some of your favorite artists would be a pleasure. There was a certain someone… But you brushed off the thought.
As you got ready for your day, you conversed with your roommate, Haseul, about this and that. You debated about the days agenda, finally settling on a gallery and lunch afterwards. Heading out, you felt excited, you could tell this was going to be a good day.
When you arrived at the gallery, you were instantly certain you were going to love it. You thoroughly enjoyed each painting and picture, immersed in each of their mysteries and stories. You took photos of your favorites and posted them on your Instagram story.
You tried to keep as much of this trip’s memories recorded on your Instagram. You only had a couple hundred followers and all of them were more or less people you knew, a friend of a friend and such.
As you finished walking around the gallery, Haseul grumbled about being hungry. You wanted to stick around for a while longer, a bright painting of a landscape catching all your attention, but your stomach begged to differ. You complied, allowing Haseul to shine in her own element, searching for restaurants around the area. After going back and forth for a little, you settled down at a small seafood restaurant.
You opened your phone to document yet another moment of your day, when you found yourself trying to bite down a scream at the message that popped up. You checked and checked again to make sure your eyes were not deceiving you.
The message stared back at you loud and clear: “You’re in Korea?” His username shone in bright black letters.
“WHAT THE FUCK?” you finally let out, a little too loud for the other customers’ liking.
“What? What happened?” Haseul asked, concerned. You couldn’t even speak, so you just handed her your phone.
“He replied? He actually DMed you?” she asked in disbelief.
He could only be one person of course. Park Jaehyung, Jae, your childhood best friend. You had met him at first grade, both of you a little more than toddlers. You became fast friends with the boy with big framed glasses, who didn’t like toy cars as much as you did but still played with you.
However, fate had different plans for you. After almost three years of knowing one another, you had become inseparable. A change in your mom’s career would turn that around, making you move to Canada.
You believed that to be the first time you had known heartbreak. Jae took the news just as hard. When you left, you both vowed to call at least once a week and to never forget each other. The latter was obviously easier, one could hardly forget Jae, his bright nature and big heart making it hard not to love him. The first proved to be harder. First you forgot, then him, then it completely fell out of habit. You were little kids, so he slipped your mind, until one day you didn’t even miss him anymore.
That changed around a year ago. You had met up with a few friends from uni when someone announced that his best friend would be joining the group. The minute he started walking towards you, you couldn’t mistake him for anyone else. His big glasses had changed a hundred times over, his hair was now dyed a bright yellow, but his easy smile was always the same. He was Jae.
You thought that meeting would change everything. You talked throughout the course of the night, catching up. You found out he was in a band now, he was singing and playing the guitar. In Korea! You thought you would be reconnected after that night. Apparently not.
As abruptly he walked back into your life, he walked right out. Although you had exchanged social medias, no message ever came from Jae. He was following you, but he never replied or even read your attempts at reaching out.
You were disappointed to say the least. You thought you would have a chance to actually discover the man the little boy you knew had become. You were wrong. But while before your meeting, he was a thought that came and went, a part of a funny memory, now he plagued your thoughts more often than not. Especially in the previous days you had spent in Korea.
You were shocked. After almost a year of being radio silent… This? How on earth were you supposed to react? You had been in Korea for about 10 days, why did he text only now? As all those thoughts raced through your mind, your phone vibrated in your hand.
“Where are you right now? Let me know, I’m nearby” the message read. Seemingly impossible, your heartbeat sky-rocketed. You almost felt dizzy as you looked at Haseul in disbelief.
“I’m gonna… go” she said as she saw the new message.
You looked at her, lost and still unable to speak. She typed the restaurant’s address along with a simple “See you in a bit” and paid for the things she had ordered. After a quick kiss on your cheek and a “Good luck!”, she was out of the door.
You sat frozen, trying to calm your racing heart. You tried to look in your head, to find where this anxiety came from. Admittedly, since the last time you saw him, Jae has become a regular thought in your mind. You had followed him closely, his music and performances captivating you every time. In the process, you fell in love with K-pop.
Dowoon was your official bias, but your eyes always drifted to Jae. A crush? On Jae? It would explain a lot… But no. How could you have a crush on him, you barely knew him anymore.
Just as you managed to calm down, he walked in. The smile he gave you sent your heart on a frenzy again. He was so effortlessly perfect, clad in black jeans, white T-shirt and black hoodie.
You got up to greet him and he immediately crushed you in a hug, now several inches taller than you.
“Gosh, Y/N, it’s been too long!” he said letting go.
“I could say that I tried… Where have you been?” you asked.
“Sorry about that… The tour was absolutely crazy! What are you doing in Korea?” he asked sitting down.
As you explained, he placed his order. You conversed over delicious food, him filling you in on his tour and you on your first impressions of Korea and your classes.
Talking to him was effortless, just as it had been when you were only children. The conversation flowed to different matters entirely as you “argued” about which flavor milkshake was better and which horror movie was actually scary. At some point, his voice got serious as he got a sip of his beer.
“I saw you were at The Rose’s live Saturday” he said.
You had to blush. You had uploaded some stories of you screeching at your bias Hajoon (yes you had a thing for drummers, so what?) and badly singing lyrics back to Sammy.
“I was” you managed “I had a blast too. They are great performers.”
“Do you listen to a lot of K-pop?” he asked.
“Yeah actually, a lot of boy groups to be exact.” You replied, not sure where he was trying to get with this conversation.
“Oh. So do you listen to my music as well?”
“Of course! I like your band’s music a lot.”
“I see… Do you have a bias?” he asked. You could see that he was fidgeting, a sign he was nervous. So that hadn’t changed.
“I… do. But you’re not going to like it” you told him with a laugh, trying to lighten the atmosphere.
“It’s Wonpil, isn’t it?” he asked.
“Close enough, it’s Dowoon” you told him.
You heard him mutter something under his breath, but he brushed it off when you asked him about it. After that weird exchange, he was right back to normal, laughing and teasing.
Looking at the time, you realized it should be best for you to go if you wanted to get home before Haseul screamed at you for staying out late. You told Jae and he got up.
“Where are you going? We haven’t paid!” you said.
“We have, I paid” he told you.
“No. No Jae sit down, we should split it! You being a K-pop idol doesn’t let you off! It’s not right!” you said.
“Y/N, calm down! I only did it because I wanted to. My treat, for your welcome in Korea. Please?” he tried, holding your hand.
“Fine. Ugh, you can still make me do you bidding, I hate you” you said shoving him slightly.
“Ha! You wish. You love me” he scoffed.
“Meh, you can’t prove that!” you said, walking out from the restaurant.
“Y/N! Wait, there’s another thing. Let me walk you to the subway station” Jae offered.
“Sure, what is it?” you asked.
As you walked side by side your heart felt like it would jump out of your chest. Every brush of his fingers against yours, every deep breath seemed to hit you like a ton of bricks. You tried to remain calm and not think about how much you would scream if Dowoon were here.
“Okay so… I want to see you again. I mean I really felt like shit not being able to talk to you all those months, I wish I could change that. Things were hectic and very different back then. My agency… Well, they have let us off a tiny bit now. What I’m trying to say is, I know I was a dick. And I'm sorry. I’d like to make it up to you.” He finished.
“Jae you don’t have to. Really, I understand. It wasn’t the best feeling when you didn’t reply, but I know how it is. Did it sting a bit? Yes. Did it suck a whole lot? Sure it did, but I get it. I really do.” You told him.
“Just let me do this one thing…” he started.
“You already paid for food! It’s fine, really, especially now that you seem to want to make an effort.” You stopped him.
“Well, let me do another thing” he said, pulling something out of his pockets.
When you saw what it was, your eyes opened wide. Your mouth dropped to the floor and you had to bite back another scream. Jae was offering VIP tickets and backstage passes to one of their lives in Seoul. You tried not to fangirl too much but judging from Jae’s amused look, you weren’t doing too well. You opened and closed your mouth, trying to come up with something, anything.
“Just come to the show… Please? If not for me, for Dowoon” he tried, pulling the best puppy eyes you had seen in a while.
“Jae… I don’t know what to say. Thank you so much you really didn’t have to-” you started.
“I wanted to.” He said with determination, pushing the tickets and passes in your hand.
“Thank you… so much. I’ll be there. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.” You told him with a smile.
By then you had gotten to the subway station where he was supposed to drop you off.
“I’ll look for you. It’s going to be a bit busy right now, but I’ll try to see you for coffee and muffins as soon as I can. You still like chocolate muffins, right?” he asked.
“Of course I do. I’ll see you soon” you told him, wrapping your arms around his waist.
He let go first, dropping you a soft smile and turning around. Just as he was leaving you, you called back to him.
“Jae!” you called, catching his attention. “If you don’t at least drop a haha at my next meme, I’m not coming!” you threatened.
He laughed lightly, eyes closing and hands going to his stomach. Your heart did several backflips at the sight, a smile growing in your own face. He nodded in you direction and finally disappeared in the backseat of a taxi.
When you got back, you had a lot of explaining to do. Haseul was basically sitting at the very edge of the couch, ready to jump on you and shower you with questions the second you walked in. You tried to start from the beginning, telling her everything that happened. When you finally got the tickets out of your purse, she squealed with joy.
“I’m meeting my husband!!! Oh my God, what if Brian actually falls in love with me? Y/N what am I going to do?” she went on and on.
You laughed at the sight, making plans to go shopping because Haseul apparently hasn’t “Anything remotely decent to wear”. As you tucked in for the night, you thought back on your day. A smile quickly grew on your face and you fell asleep happier than you’d been in a while.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The concert day had felt too far away two weeks prior, but between your classes and assignments, exploring Seoul and meeting all kinds of new people, they flew by in a blur. Now it was the morning of the concert and you and Haseul were getting ready to hit the road, listening to a playlist Haseul made called “Day6 jams”. As you screamed the lyrics in each other’s faces, you took some pictures and finally headed to the venue.
You arrived early so you walked around, meeting fansites and getting free photocards and goodies from the fans that were there. You stood patiently in line to get your lightband and a shirt for Haseul. You talked about this and that, counting down the hours, then the minutes to the concert.
Walking into the venue, you were amazed by how many people were already there. Taking your seats, you found that Jae had placed you on his side of the stage. Taking a picture and sending it to him, you wished him a good luck and telling him you couldn’t wait to see them.
During the two weeks between your first outing and the concert, Jae had kept his promise. No matter how late or early in the day, he found time to reply to your texts, even briefly. You had met up for coffee and muffins as promised, spending hours talking and sharing stories from all you had missed in your lives.
Jae had held your hand as he walked you to the nearest subway station, making you blush like crazy. After dropping you off, he only said that he was really looking forward to seeing you at the concert, finishing up with a peck on your cheek.
You didn’t really know what to make of anything that had happened that day or otherwise. It was clear that Jae wanted you back in his life, but as what? You tried not to think about it too much, but the thought chased you at all times, unwanted. Jae was again plaguing your thoughts and staying loyal to Dowoon had never been this hard.
Your thoughts were drowned away from Haseul, jumping up from her seat and screaming.
“It’s starting, it’s starting, oh my God!” she shouted, pulling you to your feet and holding your hand tightly.
Excitement rushed through your veins as the lights dimmed down and five familiar figures arrived on the stage. The song started playing, almost shyly, tasting the waters. You recognized ‘Best Part’ and fangirling mode was: on. Screaming the lyrics back to the members, as well as the fanchants had you breathing heavily but the end of the song.
You continued being energetic and enjoying each song as the concert went on. When Dowoon stepped down from his drum set to join the boys you let out and huge scream, excited to finally catch a good glimpse at him. The ments from the boys were heartwarming, each one bringing their own colours and interacting with the fans.
You were on cloud nine, magically transformed and led through a way of notes, lyrics and feelings altogether too intense for your body to handle. You tried to stay in the moment, allowing yourself to feel Dowoon singing in ‘Wanna Go Back’, Wonpil’s melodic voice in ‘Like That Sun’ and Sungjin’s honey vocals in ‘I Smile’. Haseul held your hand tightly and cried during Brian’s parts in ‘I Need Somebody’, constantly screaming “WHO HURT YOU?”.
The boys’ solo stages were sprinkled throughout the concert, making you excited for what was to come next. Everyone was at the top of their game that night and you would be lying if you said you didn’t tear up as well at some songs.
As the night progressed, the boys took the stage to say some final words before the encore. Jae was the last one to speak up, but judging by the look on his face, he looked as happy to be there as you were. You marveled at all of them, sweaty and still pumped up from the energy the fans were giving them.
“So you guys, sadly the encore is about to begin which means the end is soon approaching” he said into his mic and the crowd screamed their disappointment, you included.
“I know, I know, sad times indeed. But I’d like to share with you all a reason why I’m so happy tonight.” He stated and the crowd screamed their support.
“Well, you see, there’s a very important person in this crowd here today, a person I cherish very much. They were lost to me for a while. But now I got them back. And I thought I’d take this moment right here to say that I love them. And I don’t think I want to let go” he finished and his gaze stayed to where you we sitting.
His gaze flashed through you, finding its target right into your heart. You were star-struck, tears filling your eyes and blurring your vision. You felt Haseul enveloping you in a hug and trying to calm you down. You could hear ‘Freely’ playing in the background as you realized the truth you were trying to avoid for too long.
The final songs passed by in a whirlwind of emotions, you trying to come back to the concert, but your mind straying away to one certain boy. You couldn’t take your eyes off of him, his eyes shining as he sang and played his beloved guitar.
As the last notes of ‘Better Better’ filled the air, the end of a beautiful concert had come at last. Final goodbyes were being said and Jae stuck around to wave to your side of the venue. You were waving back, although you doubted he would see you.
After the boys went backstage, everyone was up and in a hurry to leave. You and Haseul sat back down to catch your breaths before heading backstage.
“Are you okay?” she asked, testing the waters.
You looked back at her, giving her a smile. Since the first time you had met her back home, Haseul had been a very thoughtful friend, always taking good care of you and loving you so much with her big heart. Coming back to her, even in a strange country, felt like coming back home.
“I think I’m okay” you finally managed, easing her worried stare. “It was an intense concert…”
“It sure was. You think you’re ready to head back?” she asked, seeing the concert hall emptying.
“Let’s go meet your future husband” you told her, taking her hand and walking towards the backstage.
Showing your backstage passes to the guards, you were lead though a narrow corridor with doors on either side. You arrived at a final door that read “Artist” and had the Day6 logo right below it.
As you were pushed inside, you tried to silence your mind. You needed to be yourself, be genuine. Try to enjoy this. Walking into the room, you called “Hello?” with a small voice.
All the boys’ attention was now on you and Haseul. You tried hard not to panic and gave them a small smile which spurred them into action. They all got up to greet you together. Jae started walking towards you, a huge smile on his face. You decided to stir the pot a little, walking completely past him and into Dowoon’s arms. He laughed into your hair and your heart soared at the sound. After some hesitation, he wrapped his own arms around you and held you.
“I’ve been so excited to meet you, you don’t even know. I need you to know that I see the effort you put in. I appreciate you so much, I’m so super proud of you. I can’t wait to hear more from your singing, please keep pursuing it, it suits you so well. You are so amazing, so so talented I swear.” You rambled. You would go on, but judging by his amused stare you’d already said too much.
You moved on to Wonpil, hugging him tightly. “Hi” he said, half-laughing.
“Hey. I don’t need to tell you this but please never stop singing. Your voice touches so many people, it’s unreal. So don’t stop okay?” you asked.
“Okay, I won’t” he cutely answered back with a smile.
You hugged Sungjin quickly and stepped back to look at him in the eyes.
“Thank you for putting up with them, I don’t know how you do it. You are always deeply appreciated, I hope you know it. The way you allow every song to live through you is something I’ve never seen before. I’m sorry Jae is the way he is, I think I may have something to do with that.” You admitted
Sungjin only shook his head. “Jae is just… Jae. Thank you though.”
You moved on to Brian, hugging him tightly. “Your songs are too fucking real. I swear to God everything you write either comforts me greatly, or touches me in ways I don’t even understand… Thank you and also what the fuck.” You told him and you both burst into laughter.
“Thank you as well, you guys are the best” he answered.
“You bet we are!” Haseul said from behind you.
Jae was purposely left for last. You had done your best not to look at him before greeting the others, afraid he would read right through your gaze and into your heart. Turning to him now, you were faced with his expectant stare. He opened his arms wide.
“Saving the best for last?” he jokingly asked.
You walked into his arms, burring your face in his neck.
“Saving the most special for last” you whispered as you squeezed his waist.
“Really?” He asked, his tone low. His whole demeanor had shifted, no trace of the joking, playful look he had given you only a second before.
“Yes really. I heard what you said out there, which was stupid by the way. Now your company is going to be all up in your ass. But I feel the same way. I think I have for a while.” You said, smiling up to him.
        “Really?” he repeated.
You laughed and buried your face in his neck once more, hugging him even tighter than before.
“Y/N” Jae started, cupping your face in his hands, thumbs caressing your cheek.
“If they make out right here, I swear I am going to barf” Brian announced.
“Nooo, look, it’s so romantic” Haseul cooed.
Jae placed a kiss on your cheeks between your giggles. “Later” he promised.
You didn’t know exactly what that promise would entail. Probably an abundance of sleepless nights, face times and texts. But you were willing to find out. For all the hugs and kisses, the smiles and the jokes.
        “We’ll see” you told yourself.

Monday Merriment
Infusing grandeur into otherwise drab days with five ideas for the week.
Tumblr media
I.  I was planning to write about a recipe on the healthier side, but upon reviewing the analytics for my blog, I learned that the most viewed recipe by far this week was my Balboa Chicken Paillard adaptation. What’s the harm in one more indulgence to make us slightly happier during this unsettling time? If you’re in San Francisco, Balboa is open for pickup and delivery, so please order directly from them on Wednesdays (the only day the dish is offered). If you’re sheltering in a different place, or have a hankering for the infamous special on a different day, I’ve got you covered. Pro Tip: add caramelized onion or burrata to the decadent breaded chicken with arugula, cherry tomato, and rich Marsala butter sauce.
Tumblr media
II.  During childhood, I looked no farther than my parents for artistic taste. Fans of Impressionism and Renaissance art, we spent a significant amount of time perusing these genres at the Uffizi, Musée d'Orsay, and Louvre. It wasn’t until my twenties that I had the opportunity to meaningfully explore Tate Modern, MOMA, and local galleries. Once I did, I fell completely in love with contemporary art. Though my position on the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco auxiliary board afforded me the luxury of meeting icons like Ed Ruscha and Urs Fischer, I hadn’t looked into mediums where I could find out more about my favorite artists from they themselves until now. Art21 is a phenomenal resource for all things contemporary, including first-hand content from artists like Walton Ford, Kiki Smith, and Ai Weiwei. What better time than now to explore?
Tumblr media
III.  On a stroll down the Marina Green last night, I was stunned by the sheer number of people who were very clearly on first dates. How did I know that they were on dates you may ask? Well, I’m absolutely certain that I’ve never seen more women in full makeup, nervous body language, awkward hand-holding, or full-blown makeouts on that stretch (and I’ve been walking it for nearly a decade). Dating during quarantine has been understandably tricky. The best way to describe it is a prolonged version of Love is Blind... With no end in site (at least in California), many people are taking what Dr. Fauci calls “calculated risks” to meet in person. Though highly frowned upon, it’s difficult to blame those who have been completely isolated the last six weeks for craving human touch and interaction outside their phones and laptops. I’m curious to see how all of this plays out post-quarantine. Are these quaranbae situations germane to the pandemic, or will these insta-couples stay together with stronger bonds than they would normally? I particularly wonder what Darwin would have to say about a generation born from these risk-prone duos... Only time will tell.
Tumblr media
IV.  Since my last phase of posting Monday Merriment a year ago, I developed a passion for scenic photography. Spurred by a trip to Big Sur with a friend who is a fantastic photographer, I began taking daily hikes through my neighborhood and down the coastline on Highway 1. I photographed everything that caught my eye, often resulting in hundreds of photos per day. Once I returned home, I’d review and edit the shots to learn what methods were effective at producing stellar photographs. Given that we’re still allowed to hike, I want to offer my tips to those of you who may want to take up a new hobby during quarantine. First, when capturing something outdoors, aim your lens higher than feels comfortable so that you capture the clouds. Clouds are without a doubt the best part of my outdoor shots. Particularly when the sky is moody or highly saturated. Second, look for reflections in bodies of water. A simple shot of the Golden Gate Bridge becomes magical when you catch a glimpse of the bridge in the water or mirrored in wet sand. Same goes for the sun during sunset. Third, look for something unique (or what I often call “a little weird”). A bird digging in the sand for lunch, a fish jumping, the silhouette of a person engaging in an activity, the momentum of a wave crashing into a rock. This will separate your photo from every other one that comes up on a Google image search of the same location. Finally, please think twice before using filters. They almost always weaken elements of the shot, which is the opposite of what you want. Learn to use editing apps to enhance portions of the photograph manually, the same way that traditional photographers do with their cameras using shutter speed, aperture, flash, and ISO. I use both Camera+ (here are some tips on using it) and Afterlight. Happy shooting!
Tumblr media
V.  Something I’ve both loved and hated about sheltering in place is the resurgence of DIY. In the last five years, I’ve acquired an app for everything from laundry to auto-detailing. If you have a need for something from the service industry, you can bet there’s a startup catering to it (especially in Silicon Valley). While some of these needs, like grocery shopping, picking up takeout, and driving yourself places come easily - many services are significantly harder to navigate. Here’s a list of things that likely don’t come naturally to you with links to step-by-step instructions or products that will simplify the process: Manicures, haircuts, hair color, blowouts, cooking, house cleaning, handy work, childcare, dry cleaning, and car washing. Who knew that I could give myself a salon-quality mani AND replace my broken shower head?!
Have a wonderful week! xx tt

Out Of The Woods (1/?)
Tumblr media
This multi chap fic has been one that I've wanted to write for a while. I'm hoping to connect a few loose ends, since my series is getting closer to the end. Don't worry, I still got a couple of fics left in me. I'd love to thank @xerxezra whose conversations with me are always inspirational. I'd also like to thank @dorkydisappointment whose writing got my creative juice flowing.
References to the woman in the journal is from What You Found Amongst The Pages.
In this fic the reader tries to uncover the mystery of the artist behind Zeta-7s portrait.

Chapter 1: A Glimpse Of The Past
Tumblr media
For some time, Rick had been looking forward to taking you here; to the middle of nowhere, in the northwest, where enormous pine trees lined the roads, and evergreens could be found as far as the eye could see. Initially, you weren't sure what you were expecting. A Bob Ross worthy getaway perhaps? Maybe, though unlike the paintings done on PBS, there were gas stations and convenience stores which broke the harmony of trees, roads, and sky; as few and far between they were.
The drive itself was fantastic, and the surrounding area was nice, though you had little to no cell phone reception. And since you couldn't pass the time exploring the weird parts of Reddit, you stared out the window while Zeta-7 sang along to silly travel tunes; the kind that kids would enjoy, but we're actually music recommendations from Tall Morty; another good Rick. You giggled when he sang ‘He had high apple pie, in the sky hopes’, but he didn't seem to mind, he was excited.
However, you were curious as to why Google maps couldn't find the address to the place you two were going to, but Rick seemed to know the directions. Honestly, as long as it wasn't like anything you'd saw in Gravity Falls, then it was going to be fine.
____________
“W-we're here.”
Nope. This couldn't be right. Jumping out of the passenger's seat, you were taken aback and a bit creeped out by the amount of moose statues and decorations which surrounded the place as though to protect it. Could they be part of the security system perhaps? And if they were, was it generally safe to even be here?
“We are? Really?”
“Y-you bet.”
Before your thoughts ran away with the idea, you turned towards him. “Rick, do you need any help with the luggage?”
Opening a portal, he stepped through carrying all the luggage, then reappeared in front of you a few seconds later. “No, it's - I already took care if it.”
It was just like him to be one step ahead of you. How unfair. “Rick, I could've helped you know. I'd hate for you to hurt yourself.”
“True,” he admitted matter of factly. “but if I didn't do it, then I couldn't d-do this.”
To which he then took your hand and pressed a soft kiss on it. “I-I needed to make sure you had a warm hand t-to hold. It's cooler out here th-then it is back home. ”
You gave him a playful shove in return, which made him laugh wholeheartedly before he went on explaining the brief history of this place all the while giving your hand a light squeeze.
The moose lodge, as it was named, looked more like a tacky cabin at the edge of the woods instead of the forgotten shack amidst a family of trees. It was located almost two hours away from the nearest town, and the easiest way to get there was by taking a single dirt road right off the state road twenty miles back; both of you agreed that using his portal gun would've been more convenient. The house itself used to belong to an old colleague of his, but Rick bought it a few decades ago and used it when he wanted to get away from the city, and think about life and so forth; as well as paint. Walking up the steps, he commented, “I-I know it's not much,” unlocking the front door with a moose-shaped key. “but I hope y-you'll like it.”
You really didn't want to tell him that the place looked like a tourist trap, but he stood there, waiting for your approval, nibbling on his bottom lip.
Oh, you didn't like the overwhelming amount of moose decorations, but you smiled nonetheless. “I'm sure I will. I mean, I guess I didn't know what I was expecting, but at least it will be peaceful. Right?”
“Th-that's right.”
Whatever opinions you held about the exterior design, the interior was a different story. When he opened the door, your senses were invaded by the scent of old paint and aged wood, with hints of pine and decades-old smoke. Following right after him, you gasped at the sight of the walls; each inch of wall space covered with paintings. There were scenes and landscapes, hidden figures in the brush, creatures you couldn't begin to describe, flowers, trees, and anything which had and might still be alive; his own private art gallery. With a few clicks on his phone, the curtains opened up, allowing the light to chase away the shadows.
And when the light settled on a particular painting, you walked past him, towards the furthest wall, nearest to the master bedroom, where a large painting hung above the fireplace; it was a portrait of him, done in the romanticism style. “Oh my God. Rick, that's…. did you paint that? I can't believe it, it's amazing.”
“N-n-no, I didn't paint th-that one, but I-I wish I did.”
You found it hard to believe because it captured his essence so perfectly. It was of his form illuminated by the mid-afternoon light, kneeling next to a flowerbed, holding an unopened rose, kissing it gently as though to bless it. His hands were covered in dirt, and his loose fitted, round-collared shirt allowed for a few chest hairs to peek out. As always, when he was around his plants, he was in this trance-like, reverent state; the quintessence of his being; peaceful and alluring in the fact that he didn't seem so broken. The closer you stood to this work of art, the more you felt as though you were staring at a historical figure rather than a throwback photo of your boyfriend.
The posture featured you'd seen him do on multiple occasions, when he took a moment to meditate, appreciating the beauty of life, and all once, you were envious of the one who got to see him this way, taking their sweet time, appreciating the inner beauty of this soft, tender, but complex man. It also reminded you that Zeta-7 had been young once, and handsome even though he thought otherwise. Touching your shoulder lightly, he sighed. “I-I know. Time hasn't been kind t-t-to me.”
“What are you talking about? You look great, but I can't believe this is the first time I'm seeing this. It's gorgeous.”
“Gee, that's - th-thank you.”
“When was this done? You look so young there.”
“Hohoho, not - not that young. It um - it was painted a-about thirty years ago, by a very good friend of-of mine.”
A good friend? Rick didn't have many good friends. “Were they an artist?” you wondered.
Scratching the back of his neck, he avoided your gaze. “While she'd never claim t-t-to be, I thought she was. I um - why don't y-you make yourself comfortable while I make us s-something t-to eat.”
She? You had many other questions you wanted to ask, but knowing him and how he changed the subject, it seemed that that was the end of that; for now. “Okay,” you acquiesced, determined to bring it up at the first opportunity. “but can I pick any room I want?”
“Out of the two bedrooms? Sure g-go ahead.”
__________________
After a simple dinner, you two went for a walk. There was a slight chill in the air, but thankfully you had a sweater and a warm hand to hold as you two followed the trail. You were glad to find that you were in better shape than you had anticipated, but that's what adventuring with a mad scientist will do. Here and there he found mushrooms which he took note of to return for later, and at some point, you climbed a tree, much to his disbelief, and teased him to come after you; he did, but you received a scolding which he then after profusely apologized for.
Later, after returning, you delighted in a warm bath and thought it would be a good time to unpack. Rick had disappeared somewhere around this time, which made you wonder if he had an underground lab here. Casually, you walked past the living room, with no intention of stopping but that larger than life painting caught your eye again. Unlike the other paintings along the walls, there was no artist signature. Hmm, what a tease the artist must've been.
In comparison, Rick hadn't changed very much over the years, except for the wrinkles of course and well his hair used to be darker. Still, you couldn't help but stare at that painting, envious of this old friend of his he had mentioned. Who was she? Was she beautiful? Did she love him too?
You thought more about it as you unpacked your stuff in the small bedroom next to the art room. It wasn't so far fetched to believe that he could've had his fair share of lovers, but then you had yet to see any feminine influences about his house except for a few treasured belongings of his mother. There was the woman from his journal, but he never brought it up and you had never confessed to having invaded his privacy, so you still weren't at liberty to do so. How was it that after all this time, there was still this bloom of mystery about him? Well, because he was humble and reserved, and only shared information which wouldn't hurt him.
Oh well. You'd have to get over it someday, but was it so wrong to be jealous of someone you never met?

WARNING - This chapter uses high levels of offensive language, including insults and nasty comments about these certain Tubers. I obviously do not hate these people, this is just for story sake. If you feel that you are going to be offended by the words here, just skip to the end. Thanks!
Anon: "Ladies and gentlemen, I am here to announce my purpose for joining this occult!"
He leans down to inspect the pages, then opens the large book to the page he was looking for, a large slam echoed the rooms. In it lies a cell phone, and he pulls it out.
Anon: "Now, as I load my information, allow me to give some context. Most of you are aware of a popular video website called 'YouTube', correct?"
Lucifer: "You mean that stupid website that forbids copyrighted material and is full of pampering, self-absorbed morons?"
Anon: "Yes, exactly! And don't forget about ad revenue!"
His YouTube app has loaded, and he begins to search, both for his content, and in his notebook.
Anon: "Now then, I have four specific specimens who I believe deserve a bit of a punishment..."
Lucifer: "Ooh, what kind of punishment?"
Leader: "Have patience, Lucifer. We cannot have anything done if we rush into it..."
Anon: "Ah, here we are!"
Anon flips over several pages and reveals a large list of names.
Anon: "For 7 years, I've putting all of my time into this YouTube matter, finding out who and what is popular during different eras, and today, I have found the perfect victims. Now, if you look at this list, it reveals YouTubers that I wish to see be taken down by my command! Most of them are the gaming community, just a heads up."
The list was insanely long, and each of the names contained some sort of extra name beside it. From the looks of it, it seemed that Anon wanted to take these Tubers and...change their names? The first 4 caught everyone's eyes.
List of Dumbasses - 2016
1. VenturianTale → Jimmy Casket
2. JackSepticEye → AntiSepticEye
3. Markiplier → Darkiplier, Yandereplier, Authorplier, Googleplier
4. Pewdiepie → Lucius-pie
Anon: "Let's see here, ah! VenturianTale, the first channel on my list! To keep this simple, I'll make a demonstration and start off with the first four names, to warm us all up. If this is a success, we continue this tradition every October!"
He pulls up a video of some brunette man wearing a blue hoodie, screaming like a girl at some stupid animatronic animal jumpscare.
Anon: "Now then, here's out first Tuber, Venturian, aka Jordan Frye, a American guy who is known for playing Gmod and has 2.43 million subscribers. Even though that's not a large number compared to other channels, it still eludes me how a man in his 20s spends his time playing stupid mods with his retarded siblings. Yes, this isn't a solo channel, he has 3 other siblings who are equally guilty of this cringeworthy dungheep."
Random Occult Member 4: "No wonder they only have less than 3 million subscribers..."
Anon: "However, there is something that caught my attention from them during my studies...on their Gmod murder series, Venturian has created an original character named 'Jimmy Casket', a crazed murderer who happens to have some sort of personality disorder. It's a long, boring story as to why that is, but the point is...whenever Jordan plays as Jimmy, it seems to be one of the few times he goes insane and turns into someone else...someone dangerous...someone...evil.."
Random Occult Member 2: "Interesting..."
Anon: "Now, onto our next Tuber..."
Not even 3 seconds into the next video, and several of the Tubers covered their ears in pain from obnoxious singing and shouting. Luckily, Anon came prepared as he grabbed powerful earmuffs during his searching.
Anon: "Is the ear bleeding done?"
Everyone: "TURN THAT SHIT OFF!"
Anon: "With pleasure..."
Anon took off his earmuffs and paused the video. From the screen, and the audio, this Tuber is European man with bright green hair and a VERY loud personality.
Anon: "Our next Tuber is JackSepticEye, aka Sean McLoughlin, an Irish gamer with 12.36 million subscribers. I have no idea how the hell he's able to scream and shout for more than 20 minutes without a sore throat, but that is a gift he should never have been born with. This man is irritating, and he seems to overreact to every little fucking thing he plays! And he's friends with an eyeball that's LITERALLY septic! He's FRIENDS with a toxic fucking eyeball!"
Random Occult Member 2: "Greaaaaat, as if this man wasn't unlikable enough, now he's a gross slob..."
Anon: "...Riiight...now then, despite his annoyance, he also has a darker side to him that, this time, was created by his fanbase. Since his YouTuber name implies that he's all septic, it only makes sense that his dark side implies that he's antiseptic, and it's quite an irony. Recently, some of Jack's videos are giving canon appearances of this alter ego, and it helps give one a glimpse of what his true design looks like..."
Lucifer: "Ooh, now THAT is something I would KILL to see!"
Anon: "...Okaaaaay then...Next up is the pure definition of a manchild. Do not be fooled from his appearance."
The next Tuber who was on screen was an Asian-looking guy with an extremely American accent, red dyed hair, square glasses, and a skin tight shirt, playing some horror game about a rabbit.
Anon: "This here is Markiplier, aka Mark Fischbach, and this is another American Tuber here, with 14.55 million subscribers."
Random Occult Member 3: "Ooh, this guy has quite the bod..."
Anon: "Hey, remember what I said earlier? This person may look handsome on the outside, but inside, he's a scaredy-cat and...a bit of a crybaby...He's also really stupid."
Anon fast-forwarded the video, and the man screamed loudly and flew backwards in his seat, with his jaw dropped to the floor.
Anon: "See what I mean? Oh, and this guy seems to have a weird thing for boxes, considering he's friends with one."
Anon then clicks on another video with the man playing with some sort of small box creature with a big baby face and cartoony hands, and they're making stupid noises and faces.
Lucifer: "How in the hell did he even-?"
Anon: "It's best not to ask right now. Besides, I didn't get to the real meat here. Mark is unique, because he has not one alter ego, but FOUR!"
All Members: "FOUR?!"
Anon went into his photo album and pulled up a collage for 4 characters that looked eerily similar to the manchild.
Anon: "You heard me right, 4 alternate egos! The main one, and the most iconic, is his dark side named...Darkiplier...I know, hilarious. This ego has an interesting history. He originally started off as Mark trying to be "scary" to his audience, and this soon turned to a whole new persona. The last time Dark was seen canonically on-screen was a video named "relax", but I've been hearing rumors about the new appearance of Dark; it consisted something of him being all black-and-white, in a formal suit, and 3D effects..."
Lucifer: "Wouldn't that be cool to see?"
Anon: "Ha, tell me about it. Now then, the next persona is known as 'Googleplier', and this one is pretty recent. From Matthias' video 'Google IRL', Googleplier is a real-life Google machine who can answer any question, along with having an obsession with destroying mankind...to be honest, this one is my most favorite. Unfortunately, Googleplier has a retarded weakness against too many questions."
Nobody said a word, but they all seemed to have some sort of prediction that Anon is, in some way, similar to Googleplier's personality.
Anon: "Third one has a bit of 'style', if style meant a weeb who wants to kill everyone for their lover. This is 'Yandereplier', but I'm calling him Yandere Mark for short. For those who don't speak weeb, a yandere is a character in anime who acts nice but kills peers behind their love interest's back. Yandere Mark actually started once Mark started playing an indie game called 'Yandere Simulator'. Basically, the game is shit, and the developer seems like an asshole. But this persona has definitely intrigued me. To have a fake persona to hide your true identity from the one you love? Seems like the perfect ego to hide crimes."
From the weird smile/grimace on Anon's face, the group was wondering if Anon has dealt with a "yandere" before.
Anon: "Last persona is a lesser known one, but holds great promise. Meet Authorplier! Honestly, he doesn't have an official name besides 'The Author', but I'll be calling him Author Mark for now. This persona was created back in 2013 in a mini-series called 'Danger in Fiction'. Honestly, most of the videos consist of stupid, immature potty humor, but the parts that I find to be BRILLIANT is the character's appearance and his power to write stories to torture his victims. See, with Author Mark, he has a special book that plans out the victim's fate, and he wants the victim to follow it, or else he'll end them faster with his bat."
Lucifer: "Now THAT one is my favorite!"
Anon: "And FINALLY, the last YouTuber on this list is..."
Anon quickly went back to his YouTube app and typed away, and everyone was anticipating for who was the last Tuber.
Anon: "PewDiePie, aka Felix Kjellberg! Not only is this guy the biggest gaming YouTuber, he is the biggest YouTuber of all time, having 48.17 MILLION subscribers!"
Random Occult Member 1: "48 million?!"
Random Occult Member 2: "He could have his own country with this many people!"
Lucifer: "This guy must be rich for playing games all day!"
Anon: "HOWEVER! I must point out that Felix does not play as many games as he used to in his hay day. Still though, he is no exception...the fact that this annoying Swedish man can entertain or cause controversy for stupid games or unlogical statements is beyond me. If there's one thing I cannot stand about him, it's his enormous ego, acting like he's a mighty god. He kind of reminds me another YouTuber, I think his name was Joke Pole, but he's not a gamer."
Random Occult Member 3: "What's Felix's alter ego?"
Anon: "Ooh, now this is a tricky one...see, Felix doesn't have an official persona like the others, especially since none of them have a canon appearance or voice. However, one I did choose is similar to Yandere Mark and Jimmy Casket, where this one is based off a game that Felix played named 'Lucius'. See, 'Lucius' was a game he played back in 2012, and it's about a boy with the powers of Satan; his main objective is to kill his family members without causing suspicion. For a while, people loved Felix playing as this demon-writhing kid, and he seemed to take on the personality quite well, although he had a strange obsession with a beach ball."
Leader: "I see..."
Anon: "And that's everything I wanted to say! I only have these personas, but these people have a SHIT ton of more personas than I could count, a lot of them were fucking stupid. I only chose the ones that caught my eye, which were coincidentally the popular ones."
Lucifer: "The power of shitty fanbases..."
Anon: "And this is only the start...once I make these personas a reality with a special recipe I have made, they will cause havoc, ruin the reputations of these YouTubers once and for all! These are only with 4, imagine what it would be like with every other YouTuber gamer, or YouTubers in general, big and small, destroying the platform and taking down Internet entertainment with it!"
Everyone gasped and stared in awe as Anon caught his breath from all his speaking.
Anon: "So...am I in?"

Have some Android apps
A list of Android apps I keep on my phone. This list primarily exists for me to share with friends, and is otherwise pointless. Note that F-Droid apps do not have ads, and are open source. F-Droid is therefore devoid of bloat or spyware or other useless things that plague the Google Play store, and F-Droid is the repo I first search when looking for apps.
I've noted only the widgets I care about. I don't care about most widgets. All of the apps I use either have no ads, or can be removed by purchasing the ad-free version. I tried my best to find apps with true black themes for AMOLED displays. Coming from Windows Mobile, it's strange to me that black themes aren't just inherently in every single app. In fact, on Android black themes even seem unpopular!
The List
AnkiDroid
F-Droid - Google Play
Black theme (enable night mode)
Flashcard app. Truthfully I haven't used this yet, but I used the desktop version in college.
Article Reader
Google Play
Black theme (in articles only, luckily that's where it counts)
Share webpages to this app for future offline reading. Only pictures and text are saved. I use this as my "read it later" list. Sometimes I use it just to extract content from ad-ridden websites: "read but don't save" is a second share target in addition to "save for later".
Audio Recorder
F-Droid
No black theme, only "dark" (grey) theme
Nothing much to say here. A simple app to record audio. I feel this should be a basic feature of all phones, and coming from Windows Mobile I was surprised this is not included with Android.
Calendar (aka Simple Calendar)
F-Droid - Google Play
Black theme (choose dark theme, set custom background color to black)
Simple black transparent widget
Honestly, I haven't set up my calendar on Android yet. I will be using this app more once I do. It's a strange thing that stock Calendar app doesn't have anything other than a blinding white theme.
Call Recorder
F-Droid
No black theme, only "dark" (grey) theme
From the same author as "Audio Recorder". This is yet another basic feature of Windows Mobile that I'm missing on Android. This app can function without root access, but it's very hard to hear the caller. Apparently root access is required to actually record calls properly. I also dislike that all calls are always recorded: on Windows Mobile, there was simply a "record" button on the call screen.
Car Report
F-Droid - Google Play
No black theme, but the dark UI makes significant use of the color black
Record the mileage, gas cost, gas consumtion, etc for your car. Also allows you to record general expenses, and create reminders based on time, distance, or mileage.
Clover -F-Droid
Black theme
If you want an imageboard browser, this is as good as any. Supports webm with audio, does anything I'd ever expect such an app to do.
Custom Navigation Bar
Google Play
Requires some configuration by ADB
This is the app I use to enable persistent "immersive mode". It also allows you to add extra buttons to the navigation bar. I've added a button to mine that toggles "immersive mode", for the few buggy apps which don't behave without it. "Immersive mode" hides the navigation bar (and optionally the status bar), which is useful to prevent the status bar from burning in on the display. I also like the way true fullscreen looks.
DAVdroid
F-Droid - Google Play
Sync your calendar, contacts, and tasks to a personal server.
Edge Gestures
Google Play
The navigation bar is old news. It's too hard to reach on bigger phones and takes of screen real estate. Use gestures from an edge of the screen to control your phone instead.
File Manager (aka Simple File Manager)
F-Droid - Google Play
Black theme (choose dark theme, set custom background color to black)
I bounced between a few file managers before eventually settling on this one. It's slightly uglier than the competition, but it's also very solid, fast, and fully featured. Everything from this developer Simple Mobile Tools is fantastic.
Flym
F-Droid - Google Play
Dark theme
RSS readers on android have not been kind to me. I was using the FOSS app Feeder for quite a while, but the dev is not in a hurry to implement full text article retrieval. Flym got a recent mid-2018 major revamp, and it has all the features I want but it just doesn't feel as lightweight as Feeder. It also seems a bit less reliable in its background updater, and I really dislike the UI page separation of Unread / All items. I'll probably return to Feeder if the dev starts working on it again.
ForRunners
The current stable version is rather broken, I'm running a beta build for version 1.2.x. Since the working version isn't readily available, I won't share links.
A little more than basic FOSS app for recording your run/bike/whathaveyou. It's the only FOSS option I could find.
Gallery (aka Simple Gallery)
F-Droid - Google Play
Black theme (choose dark theme, set custom background color to black)
Another entry from Simple Mobile Tools. I tried to use the built in google photos, but it's just so bad. It's confusingly laid out, it's confusing when you're trying to have folders and it keeps making virtual albums that don't necessarily correspond to folders. It's confusing to tell which folder / album you're currently in. And worst sin of all: when invoked from another app, the back button does not exit+return to previous app. No, that makes too much sense for google photos. I also have issues with playing videos via google photos for some reason. I digress. Gallery is great! It does exactly what it should, and even has an extra feature to hide your porn. It even has a built in editor with basic functions like "crop". Gasp! Can google photos crop? No. No it can't. Fuck google photos. Update: I have been informed google photos can in fact crop. The confusingly hidden location was revealed to me. I still hate it.
K-9 Mail
F-Droid - Google Play
Black theme
Widget is a simple small unread counter
GMail and Outlook don't even have dark themes, let alone black. K-9 is great... once you've gone through the trouble of configuring it. Configuration is tedious. On the plus side, it can probably do anything you'd ever want to do with email. Back up that config.
KISS Launcher
F-Droid - Google Play
Transparent themes
For all the hype about "Android lets you change your home app to whatever you want!", most of the launchers are exactly the same idea with implemented with varying degrees of competence. Every launcher is some variation on: paginated left/right scrolling + an App drawer. What about scrolling vertically? Why does scrolling have to be paginated? Well, KISS completely bucks this paradigm and does something entirely new. KISS is just a list of my recently used apps/contacts + favorites bar. I love it.
Loop Habit Tracker
F-Droid - Google Play
Black theme
Simple black transparent widget
A simple app where you log your progress in forming new habits. For example, I'm trying to read more. If I've read today, I tap the widget I've created for my "read" habit. Within the app this data is used to generate graphs from the collected data.
Materialistic
F-Droid - Google Play
Black theme
Hacker news reader.
Media Merger
F-Droid - Google Play
This is a background process which helps deal with Android's hideous trend of permanent, unchangeable folder creation. It monitors selected folders for files. If files are found, they are moved to the preconfigured destination folder. I use this to move pictures from various apps into the Pictures folder. Where they belong. Fight me, every android dev.
MuPDF
F-Droid - Google Play
No black theme, but it sort of doesn't matter
I wanted a PDF reader that wasn't google drive. This one works well. Yay.
NewPipe
F-Droid
Black theme
This is a YouTube client that supports background playback for just audio, and supports playing videos in a tiny window over other apps. Basically, it has all the YouTube Red features. It's a bit clunky for me, but this has the potential to replace the official YouTube app.
Notes (aka Simple Notes)
F-Droid - Google Play
Black theme (choose dark theme, set custom background color to black)
Another entry from Simple Mobile Tools. I've had really bad luck with typing into web pages and apps. Not even just on phones, on the computer too. I've lost a wall of text wayyyy too many times. If I'm going to type more than a line, I'm going to type it in a dedicated app that will not lose what I've typed even if the app or the phone crashes. Here's a good app for that.
OpenScale
F-Droid - Google Play
Dark theme
I'm a fatty, trying to lose weight. Logging my weight data in here gives me a nice graph to track my progress.
Password Store
F-Droid - Google Play
No black theme
Password manager for use with pass.
Peace of Mind+
F-Droid - Google Play
Enable "Do Not Disturb" mode for set periods of time, after which the ringer is enabled again.
Podcast Republic
Google Play
Black theme
Like RSS readers, Android has a dearth of good podcast apps. Podcast Republic is the least worst podcast app I could find, and the playlist management here is still insane. The good news is that, while the developers did not respond to my email, my two talking points were addressed in the very next update. Coincidence? Maybe. Maybe they'll listen to me if I send them another email about making playlists not stupid. Other than issues with playlists, this app is rock solid and does everything you'd ever need a podcast app to do.
QKSMS
F-Droid - Google Play
Black theme
Stock Google messenger uploads your SMS to some server somewhere, so I dumped it. QKSMS seems to have had a reboot/revival in 2018. This new version is solidly stable, pleasant to use and has all the basic features one would expect in SMS/MMS.
QuickDic
F-Droid - Google Play
Dark theme
An offline dictionary. Quickly reference words and phrases. An example phrase I was surprised to find in this app was "Halcyon days".
Scrambled Exif
F-Droid - Google Play
This app works in-line with the share menu. The function is to strip exif data from images for further sharing. The original image is not touched, instead a temporary image is created and the share menu is reopened which acts upon this temporary image.
F-Droid - Google Play
Share files to this app, and they will be hosted via HTTP server. A simple and effective way of moving files to another device.
Slide for Reddit
F-Droid - Google Play
Black theme
I actually don't remember why the official Reddit app offended me. I think I just got tired of seeing ads or recommended posts and subreddits. Slide is a good replacement.
Stitchcraft
Google Play
No black theme
An app to stitch screenshots together into one picture. Also adds a "take screenshot" button to the tiles above the Android notification center, something I really like since I find the pwr+voldown button combo tedious. This app comes in both ad-supported and paid. I've linked to the paid version above.
Turbo Client
Google Play
No black theme, only dark (grey)
Contributes to the hideous trend of permanent, unchangeable folder creation
Transfers files over SCP/SFTP with easy UI. Shockingly, I can find no other competent Android apps for this. Fat-fingering scp in Termux is not a solution.
Twidere
F-Droid - Google Play
Black theme
Transparent theme!
I got sick of Twitter showing me promoted tweets and ads. This is better than the official Twitter app, with the caveat that it does not yet organize replies into neat threads the way Twitter does, nor does it have the "popular things you missed" section that Twitter sometimes shows you. Otherwise, great app. One other thing you should know: notifications for retweets and likes are limited to the official Twitter app. Luckily, Twidere can pretend to be the official real deal, but it requires a little know-how on your part.
Updated 2018-08-20
Added and removed some items.

Actually, I DON’T wanted to write about my little tricks. Besides, there are enough bloggers who publish about influence and engagement in Social Media anyway. The problem – lots of them have no idea about these topics. They copy other content to get more Google reach. And some of them try to sell you outdated information as a top tip. Nobody will tell you the true tricks anyway. Usually. Maybe I have new tips? Look inside.
Increase Instagram Engagement with smart Story Posts
INSTAGRAM Story – Why you should use it
Since the acquisition of Mark Zuckerberg, a lot has changed in INSTAGRAM as well.
Recently the algorithm has been adjusted again. The focus on Instagram seems to be on the stories. Why? Well – I can only speculate there myself. I suppose because the Stories feature has now outperformed the classic feed and was well received by the Instagrammer.
Newsfeed for Bloggers and Shops
#gallery-0-10 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-10 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-10 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-10 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Give your followers an advantage
Engagement increases with promo codes.
Publish your brand new collections.
I consider the Instagram story as a great news feed for the Instagram account. Shops, in particular, should use this way for their goods. With the Story Feed, you can draw attention to your newest goods, or even to SALES.
Try out new things in Instagram Story
A second advantage is the testing of new things. How is the feedback of my new outfit? Is it worth it to post more of it in my feed? I like to try new things from time to time in the feed. If they are successful, then I create a web post on the topic. If not – they are gone within 24 hours.
This is how it happens here:
View this post on Instagram
Flott, schnell und der Hingucker für Deine Follower. Erstelle mit Canva und Ripl tolle Clips für Deine Instagram Story. #instagramstoryvideo #instastory #storyvideos
A post shared by Marion Rotter (@lifestyleluxurybrigade) on Oct 4, 2019 at 8:22am PDT
A small video, actually created for a befriended blogger, I placed into IGTV. Then I shared is into my Story as a teaser. To do this you open your IGTV video and select the function “share”. Then you choose Story. Your video will now be displayed in the story for one minute with the link “watch this in IGTV”. When your followers touch it, they’ll go straight to your uploaded videos.
The response was surprising. More than 400 people clicked on my IGTV video in the first hour and also on my feed. They left lots of comments and also on the feed post, I created later.  And best of all – more than 1,400 users clicked on my bio and came over to my website.
That’s what I call a success. Because for me it is important that the Instagram target group finds my website and thus generates more readers.
Blog Posts Evergreens or Feed Evergreens in Instagram Story
You as a blogger surely know how much work you put into your posts. A lot of time and effort. It’s just a pity that these posts eventually disappear in the Instagram suggestions with the time.  Instagram Stories are a perfect way to bring out your best “Blast from the Past” and re-engage audiences.
My goal: Transform Instagram followers  into regular readers on my website
Many Facebook users have switched more and more to Instagram. The algorithm of Facebook has already annoyed some users. So it was clear to me – I have to pick up my Facebook followers on Instagram.
But how to bring Facebook Followers to Instagram?
Because both stories – Instagram and Facebook are linked, I started to post my story posts directly into Instagram. I tagged my account – also visible on Facebook and people are switching to my Instagram Account and starting to follow it, too.
#Hashtags – the followers love-hate
youtube
You know them for sure, those long #hashtags ques on nearly every feed post? Did they annoy you from time to time? Or – have you ever received negative feedback because you’re putting 30 hashtags on your feed post?
With Story Posts, there is a much more elegant way to use hashtags. Even if you can only use 11 hashtags per post. Just because the algorithm now increasingly responds to the stories, you can achieve the same or even a higher range and commitment with fewer terms.
How To Make Effective Instagram Stories – Get More Reach
Storytelling with Pictures
Use the story area to tell a new story every day. You should make sure that the layout does not change constantly within a story. Wildly throwing together quotes, photos and graphics do perform well.
Example:
Roli was creating a really good article on our blogzine. In addition to the usual suspects, however, we have received a bit too little response. That’s why I created several slides for an Insta-Story in Canva. The coherent layouts give your Storie continuity and our followers have understood what we wanted. To get them to this brand new article on lifestyleluxurybrigade.com
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Create consistent templates per story
You do not need expensive PC software for such a design. At LSLB Magazine, we all work with Canva. It works quickly the graphic templates were created by graphic artists. With a few simple steps you can quickly create a beautiful post or just several posts about:
In Bettina’s design, for example, the fall colors are repeating the whole thing coherent.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Now it’s time to upload to the Instagram stories and here are some things to keep in mind.
Tag your own Instagram account
In every picture, you should tag your own Instagram account using @YOURACCOUNTNAME.
In your bio, the link to your website should be correct.
If the viewers of your story now like what they see there, they can access easily your bio with one tap and another little tip on your website link gets you new readers for your page.
Using invisible Hashtags
Of course, you can post hashtags on every story. Up to 11 hashtags are possible here. But how does that affect the viewer? I found all these terms in the picture rather disturbing. That’s why I colored these hashtags in the color of the background. Thus, they are almost invisible.
Advantage: If someone searches for #Fall_Deco my story appears in his search results. If the person now clicks on my story, she will not be bothered by another 10 visible hashtags. Only my @Lifestyleluxurybrigade tag is visible.
Conclusion: More readers come across from Instagram to my website.
Tagging your cooperation partners or influencers
If you also tag your co-operation partners (visible or invisible) they will receive a message in their own Instagram account and can feed your story in their story as well.
Two advantages: self-promotion and happy customers.
If you follow an influencer with a large number of followers, you can encourage him to feed your story in his own story as well.
Beispiel: “Great combination – I have seen @Monalisa and realized myself. How do you like my new #FallOutfit?”
What could happen now is that this influencer is happy about your mention? He watches your Story Board and discovers how you’ve tried his outfit. He feels encouraged in his taste and what could he/she do now? Right. You might have a big chance now get featured on the successful account of an influencer. If that does not provide new followers, I’ll eat my keyboard!
Featuring cooperation partners or manufacturers that you like
One of our cooperation has resulted in this way.
I followed a travel provider. He has legendary pictures in his story. As a result, I often just featured his pictures on my story (#featured @Traveler). Conclusion: Not a week later, a mail flapped in my inbox. Request for cooperation. Since then we work together.
Incidentally, Friday is #featured_friday in the US. Instagramers and influencers are featuring other accounts on their storyboard, they like. So you can increase each other’s reach and engagements.
Even if you distribute on behalf of cooperation in Instagram feed, it is always good, in addition to your pictures to feature the pic of your cooperation partner. Your campaign becomes more valuable for the viewer and has more varied content. Providing your highly interested followers to the cooperation partner, which is a very good “selling point”, or can play a major role in the price negotiation.
Continuity is the secret
Nothing is worse than leaving your Instagram story empty for days. You should create a story with several pictures at least once a week. Plan one or more story days and deliver new content to your followers. If you don’t have so much new content at a time, just create new designs from older content that you have not posted anymore for a longer time (Evergreens).
Tip: Save your templates on the phone or in the cloud. So you can always post back to the story quickly.
Tagging @lifestyleluxurybrigade and you will be featured into our Story
Did you like my article? Then try it out and let me know how your reach/engagement has grown, follow us on Instagram or mention us on your next story post. If we like what we see – you will also be featured by me.
Terms:
Hashtag (s): hæʃˌtæg (s) Hashtags are terms that use the rhombus while searching. I.E. you are looking for #falloutfits  you will get a list of results that leads to pictures that cover this topic.
Feed / Feeds: fiːdz The feed is the collection of your standard posts
Feature/featuring: fiːtʃə (r) n You can feature other blogs or manufacturers by sharing their images  into your story
To tag: tæɡ You can mark your account with @, but also other accounts. The owner of the account gets a message that he was mentioned in a picture. You can direct your viewers to a befriended feed or story. This is especially suitable for cooperations.
Engagement Rate: The engagement rate is a measure that measures the interactions and activity of your content. It shows you how many visitors interact with the content. Likes, comments, shares, and visitors are among the primary factors that can affect the rate.
Range: There are two varieties of range here. The organic range shows you the number of viewers with unpaid posts displayed on the screen. Then there is the paid range. When you post a paid post into Social Media, it will appear more often in the suggestions of your defined audience.

#TheFavor Aedan and Sawyer {@ASmallTownDoc @JustOneMoreTmrw}
::After my talk with #Abigale at the print shop I felt so much better, she told me who to talk to and I could even begin to tell you how relieved I was. Of course once I got in the car I googled the infamous Doctor Aedan McLoughlin, reading what I could about him. I stuck to the papers here in town and his qualifications the remainder about his life growing up seem like I was invading his life or getting ready to run some article. I wasn't. I just needed the basics for an intro that was all. Once I had all I needed I grinned softly, turned the car over and headed towards his office hoping he could help me. Even just a little with my show. At this point if he didn't I would be running around like a chicken with my head cut off wildly handing out invites, maybe quite possibly clucking while I did so. I chuckled quietly to myself while I parked across the street from his clinic and let myself out of the vehicle to grab a few  invites before making my way across the street. I hummed quietly to myself before I pulled open the door and was greeted by the friendliest receptionist I have ever met.:: "Have a seat, Miss. Edwards and I'll let Dr. McLoughlin know he has a visitor." ::She even winked as I took a seat, I couldn't help but blush. There was something about her that made you feel completely at ease and I think that was one of the reasons he must have hired her. I pulled out my planner to take a few more notes while I waited, then pulled out my phone and added the millions of new requests from the copious amounts of emails #Diedre had sent to "check in"::
Aed:
||It was a typical day for me, meaning nothing more remarkable than diagnosing and treating a poison ivy rash to explaining for the hundredth time to Old Man Iler that bacon if eaten in moderation is okay.
“You young whipper snappers change that every other month. It’s good. It’s bad. I’m 97 years old, if I keel over at the kitchen table then the good Lord saw fit to call me home.”
It was a losing battle that kept his daughter up to her eyes in worry and since she insisted that he not be placed in a nursing home it wouldn’t resolve itself until he passed. I was pulled from my thoughts when Mrs. Willmont poked her head into my office. “Aedan, your next appointment is here. General checkup to establish as a patient.”|| Thanks, Mrs. Willmont. Is she done the initial paperwork? ||Until that exact moment I’d never truly believed you could hear someone roll their eyes. I was wrong and my office manager/receptionist/godsend made a tsk noise.|| Sorry, ma’am. ||Her good natured laughter followed her out to the main area where I heard her direct someone named Sawyer to follow her to room 2.||
Sawyer:
::I was lost in emails, grumbling under my breath in reply to the nasty few Id gotten in haste of my lack of rushing to #Deidre's immediate attention. Did she really think I sat around all day and awaited her messages? My head lifted with a slight grin as I shook my head, I already knew the answer to that question. Of course she did.::
“Sawyer? Follow me please, Room 2 is ready for you.”
Thank you ::I flashed a smile the receptionists way before I felt her gently press her hand against my back, nudging me to get my full attention. I wasn't so much started as surprised.:: “Whoever that is on the phone that's got you so riled up, I wouldn't give them another thought. Erase and move on. You're far too beautiful to frown my dear.” ::I barely manage to open my mouth before she closed the door with a wink and vanished from view, if only the world was filled with more women like her. Not only would it be a better place but it would probably have a lot less anger in it.
My bag came to rest on the table I was probably meant to sit on while I took a quick look around, the office was simple which I enjoyed. Me being me, I couldn't help taking a look in a few of the drawers while I waited. I'm sure the doc would be a little while longer::
Aed: “All set, my dear.”
||The salacious wink that Mrs. Willmont gave me had me blushing. How a woman half my size and close to my mother’s age made me either feel like a teen boy caught looking at his crush or a recalcitrant toddler if I was cross with anyone, it was up for debate but it happened more than I cared to admit. Her husband said she was feisty and I wholeheartedly agreed, it only endeared her more in my eyes. Standing, I cleared my throat and went to the proper door, knocking softly. I’d been here nearly two years but I still had nerves when meeting a new patient. Old Doc. Moore didn’t just sell me his practice but his idea of small town medicine and why it was an art that shouldn’t die, I agreed. House calls had fallen out of fashion decades ago, not here and while people were refused at other offices for no insurance I was more than happy to take payments or car repairs, lawn mowing and so on. Being a doctor wasn’t about the prestige or lucrative salary for me it was caring about and taking care of people; it was a simple concept.||
Sawyer:
::I pushed aside a few of the samples that were in my way hoping to find some sort of picture of the doc I was about to meet, maybe an old newspaper clipping or business card. But I found bubbkiss. Absolutely nothing. I had no idea who was going to walk through that door, shit. My eyes widened instantly when I realized what was happening:: Oh crap. No. ::I meant to shut the drawer quietly and dash over to the bed, take a seat like I'd been there waiting casually all along. That wasn't how it went at all. I heard the knock, panicked then slammed the drawer proceeded to trip over my own heels and nearly knock myself out on the small stool that would have assisted me onto the bed where I would have sat. I groaned loudly and just sat there for a second fully aware by the pair of shoes now joining me in the room the doc had arrived. I laughed cause honestly it was all I could do before I found my feet then straightened myself out. It wasn't until my eyes lifted that my jaw nearly hit the floor, I was gonna need a moment.::
Aed:
||Normal protocol was to wait for my knock to be acknowledged but from the sounds coming from behind the door I rushed in and nearly let my laugh slip at what I saw. On the foot stool sat a stunning blonde who apparently was a bit of a snoop and mildly klutzy. Just as I was about to offer my hand, she popped up from her seat and blushed from the top of her head to the tips of her toes.|| Ms. Sawyer, did you find the swabs to be in order? ||This time I did chuckle and heard a feminine snicker from down the hall, apparently Mrs. Willmont found it funny too.||
Sawyer:
::Two things popped into mind; First was, was I wearing skirt because at this point it may have been hiked all too high for the first meeting with the doc and second I was already thinking of a second meeting. Both hands drop to smooth out the fabric only to let out a small sigh of relief when I realized nothing was riding to far above the knee, still flushed I chuckled tucking a few strands of hair behind my ears focusing my attention on the good doc:: Swabs are in immaculate condition, I must say. Do you often keep them in size order? ::Dear lord I was flirting already, Sawyer stop. Work. Focus woman. Christ. I shook my head desperately trying to reign myself in all while trying to look professional. But then again I'm sure that look got tossed out when I kissed the stool moments ago::
Aed:
||Professionalism is a concept that I pride myself on but with this woman it was a task.|| Of course, Ms. Sawyer. Chaos would ensue if the swabs were so much as a millimeter out of place. ||Humor danced in my eyes.|| How can I help you today? The stool will be punished for its transgressions, attacking patients is unacceptable after all. ||Closing the door on the sound of Mrs. Willmont’s laughter, I leaned my hip against the cabinet.||
Sawyer:
::Yup, this was a losing battle and he was on the conquering side. My eyes once again betrayed me as they looked him over before I bit down hard enough again into my lip to shake myself out of my reverie:: I was actually here to ask for your help, Dr. McLoughlin, I’m throwing a small party more like a gallery showing of some of my photographs. Since I’ve only been here barely over three weeks and know absolutely no one except for the fantastic woman at the printing shop and your receptionist, who by the way I swear thinks we are doing more than just meeting right now ::I chuckled softly, shaking my head while I shifted just enough to dig out my portfolio and an invite:: Basically you’d be helping me hand these out, I figure if you came along with me people would be more likely to show up and if you wanted to take a look to see what you’d be selling... ::I blushed instantly hating how I was making this sound, it wasn’t what I wanted to say at all:: This isn’t how I wanted to say it all. Just take a look my photos, and let me know what you think, then we can move on to the other stuff. ::And just like that my nerves hit me like a sack of bricks::
Aed:
||I was instantly enchanted not just by the jumbled word vomit but by the blush that stained your cheeks. My fingers loosened their grip on the counter as you continued.|| I’d love to take a look and please call me Aedan. Doctor McLoughlin makes me look for my father and or my mother. ||Waving a dismissive hand at myself. I opened the portfolio on the examination table and flipped through a number of pages before closing it.|| You’re very talented, Ms. Sawyer. It takes someone special to evoke a response from a viewer when the image is of the mundane. I’d be more than happy to pass out fliers or invites to those that come in the office, is there more that I can do? ||A ruckus sounds from the reception area; the Peterson twins and their helicopter mother. That woman has been a thorn in my side since I started here. She sees a bank statement every time she looks at me, the epitome of a social climber and I would prefer to keep her claws and everything else far away from me in a social sense.|| Ignore that please.
Sawyer:
Thank you, Aedan, I’ve spend majority of my life taking picture ::I chuckled softly tucking some hair behind my ears that stubborn blush seemed to be staying as I watched you flip each page:: I think it was something I was simply born to do, it comes naturally. If you could hand out invites and spread the word so the event is a success I would grateful. This was all just kind of dropped in my lap and if it..::I heard the ruckus and instantly started to move towards you, brushing against you while reaching for my things before pausing:: Are you sure you don’t want to at least go and see what the ruckus is? ::I lifted my gaze to yours, once I was sure I carried on with a smile:: This whole thing is all on me, if it isn’t a success then I fail and I don’t know what happens then. ::Actually I did know, what happens was I got stuck with the entire bill of the entire event, plus #Deidre's bill and all her commission.:: Anything you could do would be gratefully appreciated.
Aed:
No, the noise is a set of rowdy 6 year old terrors that belong to a mother that….let’s just say the interest is more in me than anything else. Show your portfolio to Mrs. Willmont on your way out, I’m quite sure the word will be out quickly. ||Rolling my eyes as I hear Mrs. Peterson use a snippy tone with the boys.|| I know it’s not professional but would you like to have dinner with me? We could discuss more about the showing and about the prints I’d like to buy. ||Lifting a brow as my question hangs in the air.||
Sawyer:
She sounds like a pure delight, I’m sorry you have to deal with women like that. I’ve had a few men who have more interest in what I can do for them then anything else.  ::There was that damn grin, the one that normally showed only when someone truly shocked me and Aedan just had. He wanted to buy my work already? I swore he like the color of my blush cause he seemed pretty damned determined to show keep it on my cheeks for the entirety of this meeting. I let my fingers brush his as I finally scooped up my things:: Dinner sounds amazing, Aedan, just name the time and place.

Photographer Revisits American Suburban Families 20 Years Later To See How The American Dream Has Changed
Back in 1997, photographer Beth Yarnelle Edwards began a project in her local area of San Carlos, California, with the aim of documenting the everyday lives of families in suburban America.
The project started as a response to her own dissatisfaction with suburban life, so she set about discovering what makes it appealing to so many people. “I felt isolated and trapped, but I realized that the people around me really loved being there,” she told TIME magazine.
As she already knew her subjects, she was able to get an authentic glimpse of their home-life and everyday routines and habits, their hopes, dreams and fears. She interviewed people extensively to create a full picture of a life that is so often overlooked, the quiet contentment of suburbia. Is this what they meant by “The American Dream?”
20 years later, after many changes in her own life, she returned to her old neighborhood to revisit some of her original subjects, and revive the project. It is fascinating to see how people have changed physically, especially the children who have grown into adults. But Beth was surprised by how stable the lives of some suburban families can be, with many aspects remaining unchanged. “This population is kind of blessed,” she said. “This isn’t how the larger population lives.”

During your trip to Taiwan, if you have a chance to visit Taipei, don’t forget to pass by YongHe in New Taipei City – an ideal place to experience hot springs and enjoy various specialties. One of the must-try dishes there is soymilk served with “weird” yet yummy you tiao (Chinese crullers).
Text: Cac Truc Photos: Thanh Liem
Locals add you tiao and fluffy pemmican to a cup of soymilk, season it with spices, mix the whole thing well and enjoy it like porridge. You should try this dish in the morning since most of restaurants selling breakfast dishes in Taiwan close after 12:00pm.
I stopped by YongHe Soy Milk King near the MRT station and bought a hot cup of soy milk with good you tiao for about 20 NT$ (about 0.64USD). Here, you are offered a wide range of traditional Taiwanese breakfast dishes such as egg rolls and rice roll crepes. Savoring you tiao in hot soy milk during the the chilling early morning in Taipei will bring you a gentle feeling of warmth and contentment for sure. I love such lazy days, getting away from busy markets full of visitors, strolling down streets and just enjoying the simple life of the locals.
It’s quite easy to make you tiao. Mix flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and water then add chicken egg. Knead the dough, and let it rest in a warm area for about an hour. Put some flour on a wood board (to prevent sticking) roll the dough and cut itinto strips. Deep fry pairs of strips of the dough, two at a time, until they become crispy and rich golden-yellow you tiao. You tiao has its origins dating back to the story of prominent military general Yue Fei.
During that period, the traitor Qin Hui and his wife fabricated charges against Yue Fei leading to his execution. The people hated Qin Hui afterwards. Inspired by popular Buddhist belief of punishment in hell for evil doers, they shaped two pieces of dough into Qin Hin and his wife, and dipped them in boiling hot oil. People began to call this food “You Zha Hui”, today’s You Tiao.
The food gets more exciting and diverse as you tiao has different variations in different countries. While people in Taiwan enjoy the mixture of you tiao, pemmican, spring onion, and spices in soy milk like porridge, Singaporeans have stuffed you tiao with fish or squid (sotong) with mayonnaise. In Hanoi, Vietnam we love you tiao with a hot bowl of pho (Vietnamese noodles). And thousands of you tiao “versions” can be found in Thailand, Laos, and China.
