I do think that some of the, how do I put this diplomatically, nutcases who like to trash Wendie Renard's reputation are incapable of answering a simple question: how can someone as homophobic as they like to make her out to be be so respected by players who know her and work with her? Whom are we supposed to trust, Twitter user MeadoCuleFan4Life or Renard's own teammates?

WENDIE RENARD OLPLAY SEGMENT: "WENDIE IS A PIONNER OF WOMEN'S FOOTBALL"

Ellie Carpenter [in English]: Yeah, Wendie [Renard] is a pioneer for women's football in France. For Lyon, she's a legend, and for the French National Team as well. I'm just honored to be playing with her at club, and it's an honor to her that she's been nominated so many times to the Ballon d'Or. So it's definitely deserved.

Anthony Lopes [Lyon men's goalkeeper]: It's hard to have longevity in the world of sports, especially at the top level. Wendie [Renard] handles it extremely well. I think she does - she's really an example for all the girls who want to do it [sports] longterm, who want to be perform. Wendie, she racks up good performance after good performance, she keeps getting nominated for the Ballon d'Or.

Alexandre Lacazette [Lyon men's forward]: Well it's remarkable what she's doing with Lyon, what she's doing with the French National Team. Even from a young age, she was able to make a place for herself a team who was already winning. And for her to remain an undisputed starter, captain, it shows all the qualities she has a a player and more importantly as a human being.

Dzsenifer Marozsan: Of course, a big leader on the field and also off the field. It [the Ballon d'Or nomination] is obviously deserved because each year she is very consistent, she's in charge of the team. She has a big heart as well. It's why she deserved it so much and why I am so happy for her.

Ellie Carpenter [in English]: Yeah, she's the best leader I've been under. Since I arrived here four seasons ago, you can just tell that she's very good with the team, she has such a good winning mentality but she also cares for the players and she's a great leader to have and also to play along side.

Anthony Lopes: Yeah, of course, she has an incredible presence. It's true that when you see her on the field, it's like when you see her in every day life. When she enters a room, you know it's Wendie Renard. So she's imposing. And I think that's important. it's important to stand out when you're competing in sports at the top level because it shows you're there, that you have the character for it, and that you're there to win.

Alexandre Lacazette: Yeah, I think she's a good captain for Lyon. She was able to set an example for many young players, that with a lot of hard work you can make it at the top level.

Ellie Carpenter [in English]: She is very funny, actually, when it's all fun and jokes. But when it's business, it's definitely business. And we know when it's business, because she turns into that mode.

Dzsenifer Marozsan: In the locker room, off the field, in life, everything, she's always very professional. There you have it. She's always there for us, for the players, to give advice and everything. That's why she is such a great leader.

The Race

It took 6 documents, 3 meetings and final approval from K'laxi Administration itself, but Mzurr got approval for the ride along. Ever since learning about them, he was fascinated with the Humans and their hobbies. Having hobbies itself wasn't odd - Mzurr loved to read and build tiny models of the Fleet's famous ships - but the Humans had a hobby built around their ground transportation that simply mesmerized him.

Rally Racing. The fact that they took ground transportation and decided that the real fun was stripping it down to a Minimum Viable Vehicle, and then adding in combustion engines more powerful than Mzurr thought was possible and then operating them as fast as they could - without driving aids - though forests and unimproved roads and all the biomes of Earth just...made him...want to try it. His friends said he was insane. "Leave the Humans to their suicidal hobbies, they're insane," they jeered at him. "They're probably so numb to existence that it's the only way they feel alive" "Yeah, that's probably it." Vinny said when Mzurr related the story to him later that week. It just made him want to do it more. When Vinny mentioned that he used to navigate for a friend of his and that his friend would love for an opportunity to show someone interested how it worked he knew then, he needed to make it happen. He started the process of getting permission. At first they thought he was joking, then they were worried for his mental state, and finally they decided that it must be because he worked so closely with the Humans on their ship refitting projects. He was around them all day and naturally some of their insanity would rub off on him. Even so, Medical said that so long as he understood that he was in the Humans care, and was warned to under no circumstances exceed 3g, he could physically handle the ride. The K'laxi Administration declared it to be Good for Relations and it was approved.

In the weeks preceding the "Special Stage" Mzurr got outfitted for the race. With the humans not even trying to hide their dissapointment, it was determined that Mzurr couldn't participate in a real race. Instead, he'd have a ride along on a Special Stage that was still timed and measured, it just wouldn't count to the team's total points.

The K'laxi didn't have Nomex, so Vinny reached out to a few suppliers and they jumped at the public relations opportunity to make a fireproof racing suit for the first off world Sapient that wanted to Rally.

They didn't have helmets that would fit either, but they decided that one of their pilot helmets was "probably close enough" and he was issued his very own helmet, complete with his name in the raised and rounded K'laxi script and the strange angular script of Vinny's language.

Finally the day arrived. At the request of Fleet Command and with permission from Vinny's friend Anthony, Mzurr was outfitted with recording devices and sensoriums so that the experience could be recorded and played back to any K'laxi who was curious about it. His translator was wired into the car's radio - "It will be too loud to talk normally" Anthony explained - and he was zipped into the custom fireproof suit. It felt odd against his skin and clearly the Human tailor had tried their best, but it still was billowy where it should have been tight and tight where it should have been billowy, but it would do.

When he got out of the ship - which had special permission to land at the Rally Stage and was just as excited to land somewhere they weren't normally supposed to as he was to race. - he got to see the car for the first time and was suddenly gripped with waves of sanity washing over him. "This is insane" he thought to himself "It's so small. Where's the rest of it?"

Anthony bounded up with that heavy predator lope that Humans do when they're on their homeworld that makes most other species nervous. "Good! You're suited up. Ready to get buckled in?"

"Y-yes" Mzurr said, lying.

Okay but imagine the little scooch of Drama when Lucy’s really unwell as she stands at the edge of the court one day while Kate finishes training and Kate jokes,

“Jesus are you pregnant?”

And Lucy freezes, because fuck, how did this happen?! She’s so careful about everything, so careful. And Fuck.

“Oh my god.”

“Oh my god!” Kate hissed, ushering Lucy away. “Let’s get a test.”

Kate bought a test, waving at the cashier who gawped at her and 5 minutes later they’re both staring at a positive pregnancy test.

“Shit.”

“Yep.” Lucy sighed. “Fuck.”

“I didn’t know you were seeing anyone.”

“I’m… not really.” Lucy breathed, “Umm I’m… it’d be your… niece or nephew.”

“Gregory?!” Kate gasped. “Oh my god.”

“Yep. Fuck.”

“You two would actually be so sweet together.”

“Kate, please.”

“Right, sorry.”

And Lucy doesn’t really know what to do when Gregory lopes into Kate and Anthony’s living room.

“Hey.”

Her heart sank, “Hey, Greg.”

He grinned at her and then he shuffles uncomfortably “I really hope that I didn’t… do anything to make you uncomfortable.”

Lucy sighed, “Oh… no, Greg. You’re… really sweet.”

“I just… kind of feel like you’ve been avoiding me. And It’s… cool if um… like you don’t want to…”

“No…” Lucy sighed and before she could stop herself it came bubbling out. “Gregory, I’m pregnant.”

And she watches as Kate’s Favourite vase gets knocked to the ground.

The car drove through the gates to the cathedral while her father huffed and puffed in the backseat. He'd said a million times he didn't want to come today, that he had no idea why he'd even been invited quite frankly. But once Kate and Anthony had RSVPed 'Yes' he was practically forced into it.

"You can always slip away before the reception you know" Kate pointed out from her place in the passenger seat, both her hands fiddling with Anthony's wedding ring as his hand sat atop her bump where their child softly kicked

"They'll know Kate" Miles replied "I don't even understand why you agreed to come to this stupid thing"

"Because Amelia is my longest friend, and while I agree her choice of husband isn't the best I still want to support her" Kate explained

Anthony's ears pricked up in intrigue "Why don't you approve of who she's marrying? What's wrong with him?"

"Kate you haven't told him?" Mary gasped

At that Anthony's intrigue only grew "What? What could possibly be so wrong with the man?"

"Nicholas Harrington, Amelia's fiancé, was our year thirteen English literature teacher" she explained

"It's disgusting if you ask me" Miles grumbled from the backseat

Well now Anthony knew why his father in law was in such a huff about coming today "Were they involved while she was in his class?" he asked

"Couldn't be sure" Kate replied "She was always his favourite student, but we were eighteen so it's not like it was illegal... just frowned upon I suppose"

"How old is he?" Anthony followed up

Kate couldn't help but smirk at her husband. He loved gossip more than most women "Thirty-six when he taught us English lit... so I guess he's pushing forty now"

"Yeah Miles I get why you didn't want to come now" Anthony stated "If that were Maisie, I'd rip the bastard limb from limb"

"Thank you!" Miles exclaimed, finally someone agreeing with him

The car pulled up outside of the cathedral and Anthony quickly made his way to the passenger seat to help Kate out while her mother and father got out of the back of the car.

"Well this is certainly grander than our wedding" Anthony said as he looked around "I'm a duke and an English literature teacher gets a better wedding than me"

"I wish I hadn't told you now" Kate rolled her eyes as she loped her arm with his

"Oh no, I want to hear more about this scandalous affair" he replied as they began to walk into the cathedral arm in arm

I started watching Merlin again a few months back because my favorite podcasters were doing it after reaching the end of their Supernatural podcast, so for a while now I've been loping through at a civilized pace, watching 1 episode per week in advance of the podcast, and I was just about in the middle of season 3 -- coincidentally around the exact point I got distracted and lost interested in it the first time I watched -- when Netflix informed me they're yanking the show next week for inscrutable Netflix reasons. So this week I've bailed through the whole back half of the show so I wouldn't have to figure out how to download it or whatever, and man, you guys. It got weirdly dark in the last two seasons! Like there's a whole episode about the bewitched knights wandering lost in a hellish wasteland while failing to rescue Guinevere from being tortured and brainwashed and I'm like -- this is the same show that features other hit plotlines such as "Anthony Head is tricked into marrying a troll who farts constantly" right? It took a turn, is what I'm saying.

Anyway, I basically enjoyed it, in that it's (for once in my life!) written to provide basically consistent and sensible payoffs for the conflicts it establishes and also Colin Morgan is just a really likeable and compelling performer, but like -- I do think it's ultimately a more or less fatal flaw to the show that Arthur kind of -- sucks. He really is kind of a garbage dude, and initially you're kind of like, oh okay, he's youthful and reckless and spoiled, but the show is going to be about how he matures into the Great King of Prophecy, and I appreciate that the key to that is going to be the way he comes to realize that the Common Folk in his life, both Gwen and Merlin, are the best people around him. And kiiiind of? I mean, he does improve marginally, but oh my God he really just is largely a dipshit right to the end, isn't he? Like very late in the game, well into the Full Flowering of Camelot, the conflicts are still along the lines of "Arthur is fully going to execute someone for trumped-up reasons and Merlin has to gingerly plant the idea of maybe not doing that in his head because god knows he'll be having none of it if you try to be direct about the gruesome mistake he's making." And the man's daddy issues, Jesus Christ! I love a good fictional daddy issue, but there's a line, and the line is that if the ghost of your asshole of a dead father half-murders your wife because he thinks you could do better, you're allowed to speak sternly to him! Very sternly! But no, Arthur's like, Dad, I have to ask you to leave now please, because I'm an adult now and you are dead. Buddy! Buddy!!! He clocked your wife unconscious and tried to set her on fire, we passed I Need You to Go Now *several* exits back!

Anyway, it's stuff like that. He's a better king than Uther was, but the bar is in hell, and judged on his own merits, Arthur is -- kind of a petty curmudgeon, and not entirely not a tyrant, and he never *did* fully get around to that restoring magic business that was supposedly the point of the whole show. Which in and of itself is okay and kind of interesting -- it was almost a bold statement about the inherent moral vacuity of dynastic monarchies, like actually if you raise a person to believe the right of rulership is in him by blood, the very *best* you're going to get is a guy who's okay sometimes, unless he doesn't feel like it, in which case you're fucked until you can figure out some way to work him around. Which is basically what Arthur was, as a king. It's like Junior Varsity Game of Thrones. It's not bad.

But they so clearly wanted you, the audience, to go all in on Merlin's fear and sadness as Camlann and Mordred and the fall of Camelot looms, and Morgan's acting his ass off and I would like to play along and grieve the tragic loss of Arthur Pendragon and the end of a golden age, except Arthur's really just a dudebro with the bare minimum that qualifies as a conscience and actually the whole last two seasons were shot more like a gothic horror than a golden age, and I don't think I found it as reassuring as I'm supposed to that this guy is coming back at some point. Not to speak for the British, but -- thanks but no thanks, is where I personally stand on that business. Avalon can keep him.

Which -- again, if that's the point, it's a brilliantly sly deconstruction of the mythology of the True King. But it's kind of not framed like that's the point. I actually couldn't tell for sure. All of this sounds like I didn't like the show, but I think I did! It had some genuinely moving elements and decent production values for TV and some good performances and a dragon. I liked the dragon, he's probably my favorite character.
