Hickox, Pahwa, Woolaver - Scenes from Toronto
In November 2023, I traveled to Toronto for the opening of “Hickox, Pahwa, Woolaver – Scenes from Toronto,” an exhibit at the City of Toronto Archives. The show features photos from the 1980s to the late 2000s, and explores how contemporary artists capture the ever-changing city. The reception was well attended and I had a chance to meet some interesting people, including Patrick Cummins–a former…

THE SMITHS OF HOLLYWOOD
“The Burglar” ~ April 25, 1947
Tumblr media
“The Smiths of Hollywood” was a radio sitcom, set in Hollywood, California. It aired from September 28, 1946 to July 4, 1947 (27 episodes).  This cast starred Harry Von Zell as attorney Bill Smith, Brenda Marshall as his wife Nancy, and British star Arthur Treacher as Sir Cecil Smythe, their snooty British relative. Jan Ford played daughter Shirley, better known as Bumps. Since the show was set in Hollywood, celebrities frequently dropped by: Lucille Ball, William Holden, and Ann Sheridan, to name a few. Future “Lucy” cast members who also appeared included Jerry Hausner, Lurene Tuttle, Ruth Perrott, Alan Hale Jr., and Frank Nelson. The program was syndicated.
Music was provided by The Charles Hathaway Orchestra. It was recorded in front of a live audience. It was produced by Andrew Hickox, who later became Lucille Ball’s business manager.
CAST
Harry Von Zell (Bill Smith) is probably most famous for appearing on “The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show” (1951-59).  Known for his quick and clever ad-libbing, he nevertheless got quite a bit of ribbing and won an honorary award in the Immortal National Hall of Bloopers Fame for referring to President Herbert Hoover once as "Hoobert Heever."
Arthur Treacher (Sir Cecil Smythe) was famous for playing butlers and pompous Brits in Hollywood films.  He played the Constable in Mary Poppins (1964).
Brenda Marshall (Nancy Smith) was married to William Holden. Her last screen appearance was as one of the Hollywood wives in “The Fashion Show” (ILL S4;E20) in 1955.
Jan Ford (Shirley Smith, aka ‘Bumps’) received an Academy Award nomination for her performance in Come Back, Little Sheba (1952). In the 1970s she was in the news more than she was in films, asserting that she was the secret wife of the late billionaire Howard Hughes.
Tyler McVey (Announcer)  did four episodes of “I Love Lucy”:  “The Charm School” (ILL S3;E15),   “Bon Voyage” (ILL S5;E13), “Second Honeymoon” (ILL S5;E14), and “Lucy Raises Chickens” (ILL S6;E19). The actor playing the Burglar is uncredited and unidentified.
Tumblr media
“THE BURGLAR”
Bill and Nancy had the house to themselves, so they relax. Nancy suggests a fire in the fireplace, but Bill can’t be bothered to chop the wood. Bill suggests that they make some fudge, but Nancy can’t be bothered to mix the ingredients. Nancy suggests they call the Breslins. Bill suggests they call the Howards.  Bill is annoyed by Nancy’s knitting. Nancy is annoyed by Bill’s reading the newspaper.  They wonder why they didn’t go to the movies with Bumps and Uncle Cecil.  They begin to argue over who said what!  So much for a peaceful evening at home!   Bumps and Uncle Cecil are walking home from the movies.  Cecil wasn’t thrilled by the suspense film they saw, but Bumps thought it was amusing and much better than the one Cecil wanted to see about the blondes in the penthouse.
BUMPS: “Girls, girls, girls! What a thing to take a child to.”
Cecil is shocked that the movie she wanted to see was all female vampires.
CECIL: “Ghouls, ghouls, ghouls! What a thing to take an adult to.”
They see a man across the street trying to break into a house through a window. Cecil threatens to call a ‘bobby’.  The man says he is locked out of his own home.  Cecil offers to boost him through the window, but when he thinks he won’t make it, Cecil offers to go through the window for him.  His name is Mr. Valentine. Cecil tells Bumps to run on home, and is boosted through the window.
At home, Bill and Nancy are still arguing. Bill decides to turn on the radio. There is a boxing match on.  A word from the sponsor.
[Note: Because the show was syndicated, the orchestra plays during the break while a local announcer would later insert advertising.]
Nancy switches off the boxing match in disgust as Bumps comes home from the movie.  He left Uncle Cecil crawling through the window of a house on the corner of Valley Vista.  Bumps realized that it was a Lucille Ball’s house!   Now Uncle Cecil is prowling around Lucille Ball’s house!
NANCY: “If Desi Arnaz, her husband comes home there’s no telling what will happen.” BILL: “Listen, Bumps. You’re sure the man wasn’t Desi Arnaz?” BUMPS: “Positive. He didn’t have his drum.”
At Lucille Ball’s house, Uncle Cecil trips over a coffee table under the window.
LUCY: “Desi? Is that you?” CECIL: “Desi? What’s a Desi?”
Lucy asks him if he stopped and had ‘a few’ with some of the boys?  She wants to know why he is talking so posh.  Lucy tells him to go to brush his teeth and go to bed.  Lucy turns on the light and screams when she sees Cecil.  He assumes she is Mrs. Valentine and that her husband is locked out.
Uncle Cecil introduces himself, and Lucy immediately thinks he’s nuts.  When she suggests he go back out the window, he thinks she’s nuts.  They both think they are playing a game with the other.  Lucy tells him to go through the door - the one with the knob.  He does, and discovers it is a clothes closet. She locks the door!  The doorbell rings.
LUCY (to herself): “It’s getting to be like Grand Central Station in here. A girl can’t even spend a quiet evening in the quilt.”
Lucy answer the bell. It is Bill. He explains that the man in her closet is her Uncle Cecil.  Bill explains the whole confusion, and Lucy wants to apologize.  They hear Uncle Cecil rambling, and realize he has found the case of Scotch Lucy had stored in the closet. Cecil says he’s happy in there and he’s never coming out.
BILL: “By the time he finishes off that Scotch, you’ll wish the real burglar had gotten in!” BURGLAR: “I am in.” LUCY (screams): “They’re coming through the woodwork!”
The Burglar has a gun and tells them to put up their hands.  Bill tries to fool the Burglar by telling him that the closet is full of jewels. The Burglar conks Bill on the head, knocking him out.  She opens the closet door and Cecil knocks him out cold!  Cecil thinks it was Lucy that hit him.  She apologizes for the confusion. Cecil wants to resume the game by going back into the closet to finish off the case of Scotch.
Back at home, Nancy is nursing Bill from his conk on the head. Bill professes his love for Nancy and says goodnight.
[Once again the orchestra plays while the sponsors read their commercial messages.]

Razor Love or I’m Glad I Didn’t Die Before I Met You
Today, April 1st, 2020 AD (after the music died), marks 4 years of sobriety for my wife Meghan. Aaaaand I’m already tearing up. Thanks a lot, “sharing” your “feelings”! Anyway, I wanted to mark the occasion with a few words, because what the hell else do I have going on? Meghan and I have been together for almost 8 years. We were married on her birthday last year, May 7th, and it was the best day of my life. When we met, she was the bar manager at City, O, City (a very hip vegetarian restaurant in Denver) and I was running the long-forgotten weekly comedy show “Too Much Fun!” with the Fine Young Gentle Boys Association (Chaz, Steve, and Brad-o aka Boner Patrol Unlimited aka Dem Dumpsta Boyz). We started Too Much Fun at a bar downtown called the Rockaway Tavern, and when Rockaway closed in late 2011 we were able to move the show into a space above City, O that was soon christened The Deer Pile. After about a year of seeing each other most Wednesdays and exchanging high-fives and drink tickets, we were finally brought together “romantically” thanks to comedian Bryan Cook and his show Competitive Erotic Fan Fiction - the classic love story of our time. The show is exactly what it sounds like, and Bryan had brought the popular CEFF to the Deer Pile for the night. I wrote a disgusting, incest-filled piece about the TV show Arrested Development dubbed “Abreasted Developtits” that didn’t win the evening’s competition (thanks to Jim Hickox’s hilariously lurid tale involving Denver’s comedy scene that absolutely destroyed) but did cause Meghan to ask what I was doing after the show. We walked to my place together and quickly fell hard for one another, despite and maybe because of our shared demon called alcoholism. We both drank a lot and often. She was in the service (of booze) industry and I was in comedy, a subsidiary of the service (of booze) industry.  While my drinking was more social, more tied to stand-up and therefore less immediate of a concern, we were both addicted and desperately needed to quit. I don’t care to get into the weeds of the bad times, but there were some bad times for sure. I experienced a full-blown manic episode for about a month right after we began our relationship. That was followed by an intense bout of isolating depression for Meghan. Thanks, drinking! I wondered what I could do to help while still in denial about my own problem. Mostly, I resigned myself to the hope that if I stuck around and let her know I loved her, Meghan might eventually pull herself free from drinking’s grasp. Thankfully, incredibly, she did, and her strength helped me also give a big old fuck you to blacking out and throwing up and sloppy sets and half-remembered regret about six months later. Comedian Phil Palisoul gave me some great relationship advice years ago. Phil is married to comedian Nora Lynch, and their love has endured decades of navigating the choppy waters of the entertainment business together. He once told me that a marriage is a team, like the Denver Broncos. A two-person team sharing a common goal: happiness. Despite the wins and the losses, the ups and the downs, the team remains a team and keeps moving forward, keeps trying to improve and succeed and learn from one another. After a few rough seasons, filled with heartbreaking losses and a lot of low-speed concussions, Meghan and I made it to the other side. We’re happy as ever, our little team, our family of two people and two dogs and a whole shitload of love and laughter. Happy 4 year soberversary, my dear. I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you.

Entertainment: DeGrom blames himself, but Mets' loss to Dodgers represents a team effort
NEW YORK — At times during this dismal New York Mets season, Jacob deGrom has seemed like a man apart. While the team has floundered around him, deGrom has pitched as well as anyone in baseball.
If anyone on the Mets had cause to look around in exasperation, it would be deGrom, whose 1.69 ERA is the best in the National League, even if he has only five wins to show for it.
But publicly, deGrom has held any distress in check — until Saturday, when it appeared to leak out with some uncharacteristic body language. He was indeed frustrated at another loss, this one an 8-3 defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers. But his dismay was pointed inward, at himself.
In the midst of what is shaping up as a Cy Young Award-caliber season — never mind the low number of wins — deGrom chastised himself for his inability to control his pitches. He kicked the mound after one pitch. He jawed at the home plate umpire, Ed Hickox. He flailed his arm after letting one pitch go, but none of it was about the overall Mets experience of 2018, he said.
“I think it was just me,” deGrom said.
But the problem Saturday was not completely about him. The Mets’ bullpen gave up five more runs, including a grand slam by Matt Kemp in the eighth inning. Defensively the team was not sharp, and offensively it was inept, stranding runners at third base in the fifth and seventh innings.
In the fifth, the Mets had runners at second and third and nobody out, but Asdrubal Cabrera and Wilmer Flores struck out and Michael Conforto grounded out. Then in the seventh, Brandon Nimmo hit a one-out triple, and Todd Frazier and Cabrera stranded him as the fans unleashed boos.
Many of them, and a good number of Dodgers partisans, had come expecting to see a great pitching duel between deGrom and Clayton Kershaw, the Dodgers ace who made his return from the disabled list with three imperfect innings.
Because of two injuries, Kershaw was making only his ninth start of the season and his second since May 1. He was first sent to the disabled list May 6 with tendinitis in the left biceps. He was recalled May 31 and pitched decently against the Philadelphia Phillies that day, but he suffered a lower back strain and returned to the disabled list. Kershaw has a history of back pain and has gone to the DL for it in each of the past three seasons.
DeGrom needed 112 pitches to get through six innings, and he allowed three runs, including a first-inning home run to Max Muncy. It was the first time deGrom had given up three earned runs in a game since April 16, and his record fell to 5-3.
The language he used to describe his pitches sounded like hyperbole: words like terrible and garbage, plus OK.
The changeup was terrible, he said, the slider inconsistent to the point where at times it was not even close to the strike zone, and he was having trouble commanding his fastball, the pitch he seemed forced to rely on the most.
“You’re trying to get big-league hitters out with a pitch you don’t really know where it’s going,” he said, “and the other ones were garbage. So it just wasn’t very good tonight.”
DeGrom even acknowledged that Hickox deserved credit. After the fourth inning, deGrom appeared to argue with the umpire about a pitch, but he said he had merely asked if the pitch had really missed the strike zone. After looking at it on video between innings, deGrom conceded that the umpire had made the right call.
“He was right,” the pitcher said.
DeGrom has been the subject of trade speculation, considering that the Mets are doing so poorly. They began the season 11-1, but with Saturday’s loss they fell to 12 games under .500, at 31-43. Sandy Alderson, the general manager, said before Friday’s game that the team needed to improve quickly or it would consider trading assets before the July 31 trade deadline.
The Mets have lost both games since Alderson said that, and they have dropped five in a row.
INSIDE PITCH
After Saturday’s loss, Mets manager Mickey Callaway said that Jason Vargas, who was scheduled to start Sunday, had suffered a calf strain while training and would be placed on the disabled list. Callaway said he did not yet know who would be the starting pitcher for Sunday’s game, which was scheduled to begin less than 15 hours later.

Day 7 Incorporating Self Love Into Our Art Practice
Tumblr media
Another day spent mostly working in studio with short breaks outside to enjoy the beautiful weather.
April Hickox, a lens-based artist and Island resident, visited photo/video artists in their studios for individual critiques. She offered brilliant insight on the work the artitsts are creating, drew parallels with other contemporary artists, and gave valuable suggestions for further artistic research.

At 4:00, spoken word artist Andrea Thompson came to give a talk and informal writing workshop.  We sat in a circle, introduced ourselves and shared our experience with spoken word. Some people have attended events, others enjoy watching performances online, and for some, the day’s workshop was their first experience of the form.
Andrea shared the history of the form, how it flourished in the wake of the Black Arts Movement. Andrea emphasized that the form embodies voices that are idiosyncratic, authentic and unique.
Tumblr media
Between readings of her own poems, Andrea offered writing advice from her own process. She encouraged us to put the editor away when writing in order to give our ideas space to grow. She gave the group a writing prompt (“Pick a concept.”), and five minutes to write a response incorporating sensory details.
We discussed different strategies for overcoming writer’s block or creative’s block, and managing stage fright. Although not all the artists identify as writers, the suggestions will no doubt be helpful for speaking publically about our work.
“The best thing we can bring to our practice is self love.”
Andrea concluded the workshop by reading her piece, “Intersectionality”. Then she dropped the mic.
Tumblr media

Following the workshop, we gathered in the kitchen for another communal dinner, a mouth-watering vegan curry courtesy of the gourmet, Byron Armstrong. Artists remarked on how helpful Andrea’s workshop was in terms of letting the editor go and finding the joy in the uncritical process of creation.

Sunset at Hanlan’s Point
Impassioned conversations continued throughout the course of the meal and after as artists returned to their studios for late night art creation and socializing.

April critiqued my video work. Very concise and helpful. I need to master editing or pay for someone to edit. Also my lighting needs improvement. Stay with the humour or absurdist aspect as that works better.

Madison Bumgarner goes five innings to get to start with acquire of time
SAN FRANCISCO — Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner noticed no rationale to make a significant offer about his to start with acquire of the year, even if it came significantly deeper into the time than anyone expected.
In a time that prolonged in the past spun out of control for both equally San Francisco and its ace, Bumgarner was happier seeing the having difficulties Giants have a person of their finest online games of the year.
Bumgarner authorized a person run about five innings, and the Giants beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-three on Tuesday night time.
“It was great to be on the board now independently,” Bumgarner said. “But which is not what it truly is about. It is about us successful online games, and we played seriously fantastic tonight.”
Eduardo Nunez drove in two runs in his last game with San Francisco as he was traded to Boston for two slight leaguers. The veteran infielder was pulled in the fifth inning and was afterwards noticed on tv shaking arms with several teammates in the Giants’ clubhouse. The offer was declared a couple minutes soon after the last out.
Bumgarner also singled and scored, Buster Posey experienced 3 hits and an RBI, and Joe Panik included a bases-loaded triple as having difficulties San Francisco won for only the fifth time in sixteen online games.
Josh Harrison singled two times for the Pirates, who fell at the rear of 9- and couldn’t recover. Pittsburgh stranded seven runners in the to start with five innings, together with four in scoring situation.
Making his 3rd start since coming off the disabled record soon after approximately 3 months subsequent a dust bicycle incident in Colorado on April twenty, Bumgarner (one-4) was largely sharp though quieting a powerful Pittsburgh lineup and ending the Pirates’ seven-game successful streak at AT&T Park.
Three decades soon after pitching a full game to beat Pittsburgh in the NL wild-card game en route to remaining named the 2014 Planet Sequence MVP, Bumgarner pitched out of a pair of early jams, authorized 6 hits and experienced four strikeouts.
“He did a great occupation,” San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said. “I am guaranteed he is glad to get that [to start with acquire] taken treatment of. Once he went five that was enough.”
It is the to start with acquire by a Giants starting up pitcher since July 5.
Jameson Taillon (six-4) took the loss, supplying up ten runs in 3 innings.
“I failed to make fantastic pitches after they bought runners on,” Taillon said. “They failed to waste any time. They experienced a merry-go-round going.”
UMPIRE GOES DOWN
Posey lined a one that strike next-base umpire Ed Hickox in the foot and knocked him down in the fifth inning. Hickox little by little bought to his feet and was attended to by a member of the Giants’ health-related staff but remained in the game.
TRAINER’S Area
Giants: RHP Johnny Cueto could need to have to make a rehab start in advance of rejoining the rotation. Cueto has been hindered by blisters on numerous fingers of his pitching hand, an issue that has lingered for considerably of the earlier thirty day period. The appropriate-hander played catch from one zero five feet in advance of the game. Pablo Sandoval moved from Solitary-A San Jose to Triple-A Sacramento as he carries on to consider to perform his way back into the significant leagues. RHP Chris Stratton was recalled from Sacramento and IF Orlando Calixte was optioned down.
UP Next
RHP Jeff Samardzija (4-11, 5.05 Period) pitches the finale for the Giants, looking for to beat Pittsburgh for the next time this time, though RHP Trevor Williams (4-4, 4.74 Period) takes the mound for the Pirates on the lookout for his fourth acquire in the earlier five road starts off.

LUCY USES UP HER ALLOWANCE!
June 12, 1978
Tumblr media
On June 12, 1978, Lucy Ricardo finally got her household allowance again, having used it all up in 1953 and for the next 25 years!
Tumblr media
LUCY: “I’ve used up my allowance till June the twelfth.” ETHEL: “That not bad.” LUCY: “June the twelfth 1978?”
The exchange happens in the second scene of “The Million Dollar Idea” (ILL  S3;E13) broadcast on January 11, 1954, but filmed November 28, 1953.
Tumblr media
Coincidentally, in the previous episode, Lucy had a nightmare that Ricky left her for a sexy Cuban dancer and she is reduced to begging outside their theater with a grown-up Little Ricky on her lap, 25 years in the future - 1978!
Tumblr media
In 1978, Ricky and Carlotta’s fans have also aged 25 years - although Ricky and Carlotta have not!
Tumblr media
In reality, the last time we saw Lucy Ricardo was in April 1960, so there’s no way of knowing what she was doing in 1978. Coincidentally, June 12, 1978 is a Monday, the day of the week when all new Lucy programs first aired.
MAKING ALLOWANCES
Tumblr media
In “The Quiz Show” (ILL S1;E5), Ricky cuts off Lucy’s allowance until she can catch up with her household accounts. To make some extra cash, she goes on the radio quiz show ‘Females Are Fabulous’.
Tumblr media
When “Lucy Wants New Furniture” (ILL S2;E28), Ricky is angry that Lucy has bought new furniture against his wishes and brings it all down to the club untill she can pay for it out of her allowance.
Tumblr media
In “The Business Manager” (ILL S4;E1) Ricky hires Mr. Hickox (Charles Lane) to watch over Lucy’s finances. He pays all the household bills out of Lucy’s allowance, leaving her a mere $5 for herself.
Tumblr media
On season one of “The Lucy Show” Charles Lane (as banker Barnsdahl) is once again responsible for doling out Lucy’s allowance, apparently from a trust fund left to her by her late husband. Like Mrs. Ricardo, Lucy Carmichael was always wheedling Mr. Barnsdahl - and later Mr. Mooney - to give her a few more dollars.
In real life, performer Lucille Ball spent 1978 doing tributes: to the fabulous ‘50s, Gene Kelly, Henry Fonda, Milton Berle, Bob Hope, Jimmy Stewart, CBS, General Electric, the Ohio Jubilee, and even (unbelievably) Nashville!
Tumblr media
The closest Lucille gets to June 12th is a television appearance with Gary Morton and Lucie Arnaz on “Dinah!” on June 5, 1978.
Tumblr media
On June 12, 1978, Ron Howard appeared on the cover of People Magazine. Howard had played Opie in “The Andy Griffith Show” filmed on the Desilu backlot. He became fascinated with the film making process, gave up acting, and became a director.
Tumblr media
TV Guide listings for June 12, 1978
9am - “Donahue” features ERA opponent Phyllis Schlafly, who was recently played by Cate Blachett in “Mrs. America” the final episode of which mentioned Lucie Arnaz. Cate Blanchett is slated to play Lucille Ball in a biopic about Lucy. Ball promoted Mame on “Donahue” in 1974.
9:30am - “Hollywood Squares” hosted by Peter Marshall, who played Lucy Carmichael’s brother-in-law Hughie in “Lucy’s Sister Pays a Visit” (TLS S1;E15) in 1963 and Dr. Carter in “Happy Anniversary and Goodbye” in 1978.
10am - Lucille Ball might watch one of her favorite hosts Alex Trebek on “High Rollers”, a game show she had appeared on in 1977.
11am - The morning rerun of “I Love Lucy” was “Equal Rights” (ILL S3;E4).
6pm & 10pm - Two airings of “The Odd Couple” starring Tony Randall, who had appeared on “Here’s Lucy” in September 1971.
Tumblr media
Here’s what things will cost Lucy when she finally gets her allowance again on June 12, 1978.  Hopefully, Ricky has raised her allowance to match the cost of living!  If they are still in Westport and are still in the chicken business, they don’t need to worry about the cost of eggs!

April Hickox
Photographs from the exhibition “Provenance Unknown”
Katzman Contemporary, Toronto, Ontario.
Hickox teaches at the Ontario College of Art and Design. When the studios are cleared at the end of a semester, abandoned student canvases are slashed, so the stretchers can be resold to other students.  These photographs by Hickox foreground questions of authorship and the values of destruction and creation.
For me, I also am captivated by the mysterious voids and cancellations -- the black gap evoking what cannot be represented.
