Lost Horizon by James Hilton - Chapter 1

Right off the bat we get some facts about the plane hijacking. About 10am on May 20, 1931, the four passengers got on the plane. Roberta Brinklow, Henry Barnard, local hottie Hugh Conway, and Charles Mallinson. We also find out Conway is 37 at this time, which fits my previous estimate of his age.

The flight takes off and an hour in, Mallinson realizes both they're off course and the pilot is different. He also points out that they're at an incredibly high altitude. (More support for my theory they're going to Everest.) They land and its clear they've been hijacked, and are held in the plane at gunpoint while some of the pilot's compatriots refuel the plane for him to take off again. The passengers assume they've been taken for ransom.

Conway is dead exhausted and takes a nap. Mallinson explains how fortunate they are to have Conway with them when they're in trouble, and Roberta has her first line: "I think he looks like a very brave man." Even Barnard comes to like Conway a reasonable amount.

Conway, meanwhile, isn't actually asleep, and is super anxious. He's not stupid by any account and knows this is dangerous.

Characters:

The plane continues east and slightly north. Conway ponders how the pilot is clearly experienced, and despite the danger of the situation, it puts him a little at ease - he's used to being the one everyone gets to for help, and its relieving to know this guy won't ask Conway for help. I'm getting oldest son vibes.

Despite disliking the need for responsibility, he keeps the whole plane cool - he eases Mallinson's brash temper, stopping him from rushing the pilot (who is armed, and also the only one capable of landing - and also they wouldn't know where to go, because they don't know where they are). After some more introspection upon Conway's character - namely, the ability to stay so calm under pressure that other people assume he doesn't care about the issue - the group naps. Conway and Mallinson awake to find the plane incredibly high in the mountains, to where even in the pressurized cabin they're having difficulties breathing.

Hugh "Glory" Conway: 37, englishman, polyglot, pianist, bleeds charm and charisma. Traveled a lot for a decade or so working for the Consular Service, taught Asian history at Oxford for a few years after WWI. Has a twitch near the left eye from overwork or being drunk. (Rutherford pointed this out in the prologue on pg17). Unmarried. Speaks Pashto too. Got a Distinguished Service Order in WWI fighting in the trenches in France.

Ms. Roberta Brinklow, of the Eastern Mission. Small, older, staunchly grouchy woman. Keeps calm.

Henry D. Barnard: American. Heavy set and loud, traveling from Persia. Already charmed by Conway after just a brief convo.

Captain Charles Mallinson: H.M. Vice Consul. First one on the flight to realize something was wrong - first that they were off course, and second that the pilot was not a man named Fenner like it had been scheduled to be. Sent to Baskul because he failed a test of some kind, probably a flight test. Worked with Conway at the consulate. Engaged.

Hijacker pilot: Pakistani. Knowledgeable enough about piloting and such to smoothly steal and take off with a plane without arousing suspicion, and then successfully land and take off in a very rocky/uneven area. Armed with a revolver.

Words I had to look up:

Pashto: Iranian language of the Pashtuns; also spoken in Pakistan. Spelled here as Pushtu

D.S.O. : distinguished service award, for his time in WWI. Conway is a decorated veteran.

Interesting passages:

He knew that the plums were not for him; but it was genuinely consoling, and not merely sour grapes, to reflect that he had no taste for plums.

The paragraph is talking about how he's had a lot of nonglamorous jobs over the years, and others thought he was making poor decisions, but he was ok with that. He knows they're dangerous, and he could get hurt or die. But he doesn't have a sour attitude - or jealousy of others - about it. He doesn't care much for the picturesque jobs, and is perfectly ok to get his hands dirty. It's a neat window into his mindset and priorities. He's easy going but willing to work hard, and sticks to what works for him even if nobody else understands.

"...but I don't recollect any instance of a gumnam running off with one of Uncle Sam's aeroplanes."

Barnard the American, talking shit about the British air force. This didn't age well 😬

Short hop Monday

We did a short cruise today, Martin steering while I work at my laptop in the dinette. We are on a strange bit of the North Oxford canal, after you travel down the Hillmorton Locks and pass Clifton Cruisers, there is a bit of a dearth of mooring spots, so the plan was to make a short hop to Brinklow.

As we approach Rugby we pass nb Alpenrose who are on Instagram as The Narrowboat Project and trade from their boat and online

Later they passed us with a cheery wave once we moored and remarked that we would be leap frogging each other over the next few days.

Today’s cruise was a very windy one, in particular the stretch in Rugby which was even more wiggly when it really was a contour canal following the 300ft contour line, designed to stick to one level, this snapshot from the Open Canal Map shows the original path of the canal (the dotted lines):

There is even a tunnel on this stretch, The Newbold Tunnel, the original tunnel, built in 1770 and in use until 1840 has been bricked up, it is only 400ft long and goes under the road and the church and the replacement opened when the path of the canal was altered when it was ‘straightened out’.

The canal continues on, passing under the busy West Coast Mainline railway before taking a stretch alongside Cathiron Road near Brinklow. The principle industry was a saw mill between Brinklow and Harborough Magna which was served by the canal although this closed in 1930.

A pleasant spot to moor opposite the farm although the internet signal is poor and made connecting for work a challenge! An evening stroll along the tow path was a good way to get over being hunched over the computer.
