I have to say, I really prefer the versions of the songs from the 2016 Off Broadway boot floating around. BUT I'm impatient and didn't want to keep enduring the dialogue and applause at the beginning and end of the uploads on youtube, since when I'm listening it's more for the music than the (acting) performance. So, I ripped those videos and did some audacity work to crop out as much of the pre-song dialogue and post-song applause as I could. Mainly for myself, but I threw the MP3s onto google drive for my pals, so if anyone else wants to grab those for easy listening: here you go!

8th - There is a Place

Look, this song is lovely, I sincerely love the guitar in it and the melody is very sweet, but I’m not gonna lie, if depression was a song it would sound like this one. I know it has kind of a nice message and I guess it fits with the bittersweet ending it follows, but god it makes me so sad I rarely want to listen to it, sorry!

7th - And When You Fall

If the last one was bittersweet, this one is just pure bitterness, and although it’s not my favorite (sorry, slower songs, nothing against you), I kinda love that about it. It has bite. It fits very well with its ending branch, and I love me a song that builds.

6th - Take a Little Time

Oh, this one is crunchyyy. Fizzy. The instrumental is so good here, and we’ve got some chorus voices as well, which is always super fun. The last minute or so of this song is INSANE, that voice distortion makes me want to start smashing shit, it’s so fucking cool.

UPPER TIER (aka I’ve called all of these my fave at some point in time)

5th - Bring It All Down

BRING IT ALL DOWN BRING IT ALL DOWN BRING IT ALL DOWN BRING IT ALL DOWN. Now this one really makes you want to break shit, I absolutely love it. The little chorus voices make me go absolutely feral and you can bet I’m busting out some embarrassing headbanging moves while listening to it. Bonus points for being sandwiched between the most unhinged and devastating ending branch and the most batshit epilogue possible.

4th - I Hate It When

ABSOLUTE HATER’S ANTHEM! Catch me on a different day and I’ll say this one’s my favorite because IT’S SO FUN. I’m such a sucker for the juxtaposition of happy melody/fucked up lyrics, so this song makes me absolutely giddy (it gives me the same giddy feeling that I get from listening to the Mr. Bear song!). ‘I hate the things you’re planning and I hope you don’t succeed’ LMAO ME.

3rd - Smart

THIS ONE’S FOR THE THEATER KIDS! Oh, it makes my musical theater lover/dancer heart very happy, this song is so so sexy lmao. The lyrics are so entertaining and remind me of We Didn’t Start the Fire with all its references, and of course the tango/latin flair is an absolute bonus for me, can’t say I’m not biased! Bonus points for being the first credit song I heard, and my first (and best) ending.

2nd - Being Human

PLEASE THIS SONG MAKES ME SO INSANE IT’S SO GOOD. The buildup here is SO freaking amazing, the instrumental’s got everything i could ever want. You want claps and snaps? You got them. Acapella-like background vocals? Bet. You want sick guitars? For sure. Oh you thought that was all, but WAIT HERE COMES THE HORN SECTION! Again, the last minute of this song is crazy, I love it so much. Honestly, this was my favorite song for a long time while I was still discovering all of them, and I thought none was gonna be able to dethrone it, but...

1st - Grip on the News

KEEP THE PEOPLE AS FEEBLE AS THE SHEEP IN THE YARD THEN IT ISN’T SO HARD TO PLAY THE FASCISM CARD KEEP THEM AWAY FROM THE FACTS JUST KEEP EM DUMB AND RELAXED DELIRIOUS AND CONFUSED AND KEEP A GRIP ON THE NEWS! I can’t explain why this song makes me SO deliriously happy but it’s just SO perfect for me. Yet another happy melody that gets your ass dancing around while still hitting you with lyrics like ‘There’s no time to find out what you believe when you’re so poor that you can’t breathe’, like HELLO IT BANGS. Also, the instrumental break? THE DRUMS GOING WILD? This song rules and it gives me such main theme feelings, so of course it gets the number one spot.
