CW: Brief mention of animal neglect

Decided to create an OC who appears in what I've decided to call the "Sniper Returns Arc" in my Ginga AU.

Marnie is a Border Collie who was originally born to a dog owned by a very neglectful backyard breeder. All of her littermates were eventually sold off until it was just her and her mother, as the owner decided to keep Marnie to breed more puppies in the future since her mother wasn't doing very well health-wise. Marnie's mother eventually passes away due to malnutrition, but before her death she tells her daughter to find a way to escape if she ever gets the chance. While the owner was opening the cage to put in food one day, Marnie bites him on the hand and, while he's distracted from the pain, jumps out of her cage and leaps the fence to get out of the backyard, finally experiencing freedom for the first time ever.

Not wanting others to suffer the same fate as her mother, Marnie makes it her mission in life to find dogs experiencing neglect or mistreatment and give them a chance to live free. She eventually builds up a very sizeable pack of which she's the leader, but things change one day when another pack lead by a scarred Doberman named Sniper takes them over. He wanted to build up numbers in his own pack to get revenge on another dog named Gin, and he threatened to kill the packs puppies and pregnant females if they didn't comply. Not wanting any harm to fall upon them, Marnie reluctantly agrees and does whatever Sniper tells her. It isn't until her encounter with Weed and his friends when Marnie and her fellow pack mates find the courage to fight back Sniper and his crazed mate, Lucy. After getting the pack's most vulnerable members to safety, Marnie and Weed both fight back against Sniper and his supporters which results in her, Weed, Sniper and Lucy being knocked into a raging river. While she and Weed both survived and were rescued by a human, Sniper and Lucy were both washed further downstream and drowned.

After Sniper's death, Marnie and her pack mates end up following Weed back to Ohu. She later becomes mates with Kyōshirō and they have two sons.

Mhh what diety would the farm boys be?

Oof that's tough... lemme see...

Pheasant- Good weather. Pray to him for a season that makes your life. Sun when you need it, rain when you need it, frost to stay at bay. He likes potatoes and his temple is a simple wooden shack filled with hay, alfalfa and root veggies.

Shepherd- Bountiful harvest. You pray to him to get the max amount your plants can grow. His price might be considered steep though- gotta prove you worked *hard* for it. His temple is more like a stage, and he loves being gifted prize winning crops.

Rooster- Sort of a fertility one? But for livestock. Pray to him for a good breeding season, for healthy baby livestock, for no diseases amongst them. His temple is an old barn, and he loves pictures of chicks, calves, lambs... MAINLY piglets. Bonus points if their names are written on the pictures.

Mastiff- Justice. Pray to him for protection from bandits and thieves. Safety of your family. His shrine is an old Sheriff Office. He loves offerings of old keys and also fresh gardenias.

Quail- Same as Mastiff, but he takes care of the shrines when people can't reach the temple. He likes blueberry anything.

Collie- Protection for Livestock. Similar to Rooster but covers those who drive the herds too, not just the animals. He keeps rustlers at bay, coyotes and wolves as well. Touch of fair weather and healthy grass borrowed from Pheasant and Shepherd too. No temple, but you can make a shrine anywhere with some stones and hay, and offer honey. Or... you know, tobacco or weed...

Hawk- Minor deity, he used to bring luck and health to those in Coal Mining but he got sick. He's more a trickster spirit now. Trying the patience of Mastiff and Quail. Mainly Mastiff. He has no shrines or temples, but loves beads and feathers. Shiny things too.

Coyote- Trickster Deity, shared his power with Hawk to keep him 'alive'*. Though he causes little trouble anymore, relaxing as he let Hawk run amuck. He loves wool and fleece, along with tobacco and certain herbs as well.

*Since they share power, any offerings made to one boosts the other.

So I've seen talk in the dog world about how just walking your dog isn't necessarily a fulfilling exercise for them. Finding different ways to exercise your dog and finding out what they really enjoy is important, like border collies and agility training.

Problem is that I'm pretty sure my dog's ideal form of exercise is hunting live animals. She gets so excited and riled up and her tail can really get going! No, she does not consider toys a suitable replacement. She'll fetch her plush duck a few times down the hall if she's in a playful mood, but it's not the same. For the past two months, however, she's been *obsessed* with this one lot up the street from us because it's overgrown with scrub brush and weeds and we've seen deer hiding out in it as well as numerous cats. Pretty sure I saw some raccoon tracks as well. But yeah, if we're not going to the pet store or I'm putting her in the car to head to a park/trail, we're going right to that lot so she can nose around for animals to chase.

Maybe trying out scent work would satisfy her urge to hunt and chase, but, yeah, if I take her to a park and throw a tennis ball, she'll just stare at me.

Long overdue for an update! A lot has happened so I'll try my best to catch y'all up.

I've been feeling a bit down, I think that was partly due to some unmet expectations with the WWOOFing. After the long hikes and the eye infection I was looking forward to having a relatively stable place to stay, but while it was stable, it was not comfortable. The bush cabin they had said I could stay in was falling apart and mouldy, so I ended up still sleeping in the van the whole time. The bathroom was cold and covered in mud and spiders, and the family, while very kind, needed their privacy. Their kids required a lot of attention, so there wasn't much to do in terms of socialising, let alone with peers, as I was the only WWOOFer there and the area was quite remote. So, I ended up working alone most days. The only company I had were Luna and Uenuku (Te Reo Māori for 'rainbow'), the family's two adorable collies:

Uenuku was Luna's daughter, and they had a unique way of playing: Luna would forage around the large garden for a pinecone and drop it near me. Uenuku would alert me to it by stomping on the ground. I was supposed to pick it up and throw it as far as I could, but Luna was the only one interested in chasing it: Uenuku's eyes were locked on her mother instead. Her mission was to stop Luna from catching the pinecone in the first place, but she never managed! I tricked them a couple times by throwing it backwards instead of forwards, which resulted in two very confused dogs. The most endearing was when I was working in a delicate bed and couldn't risk them darting through and damaging the plants, so I'd have to disappoint them and ignore the pinecone at my feet. Of course they couldn't understand me telling them I couldn't play with them, so they'd watch me work expectantly, and every weed I pulled out of the bed and tossed into the wheelbarrow was narrowly followed with their eyes in hopes they'd get to chase one of those instead. Eventually they'd get the message and just lie down, chilling in the morning sun with me until it was time for lunch.

I'd enjoy the family's cooking with homegrown veggies, and after that I'd have the rest of the day to myself. However, often I was quite low on energy by then and would take a nap or just knit a little, which felt a bit like a waste because I was staying in such a beautiful area. This leads me to the other reason I think I haven't been feeling my best: it feels like I've got a case of travel-burnout. I'm tired a lot, and often find myself fantasising about being home and telling stories to loved ones. About making necklaces out of the shells I found on the beaches and wearing them to social events with all my Dutch friends. About being done. The incredibly beautiful nature has become normal to me, so I didn't undertake a lot after work, because what's the point? There's beauty everywhere, and I've seen it already. That way the days blend together quite easily and now that I'm moving on, it feels like I was there much longer than a week and a half.

Besides all the above, I truly enjoyed the work. I learned a lot about recognising plants, fertilising soil, and even dwelling construction. It was nice to just be out in the fresh air, working with my hands, not looking at a screen. And after having some expectations laid on me for a little while, I have a renewed appreciation for traveling on my own again!

Another bright side was getting to join the local piano man in a sing-along night in the Mussel Inn twice during my stay. This is an adorable pub right off the state highway with a big fireplace and home-brewed beer and kombucha (complete with punny names, see below) where people from all over the bay gather on Monday nights to sing their lungs out to classics such as 'Hey Jude', 'Waltzing Mathilda' and 'Hit the road, Jack'. I loved being immersed in the warmth and the music, and they served the best vegan chocolate cake :)

On the days I did gather enough energy to go out hiking, I did see stunning sights:

Waikoropupū springs, where ~10 m3 of some of the clearest water in the world bubbles up from the ground every second. It's a very sacred place and it's beautiful to see how it's being protected and preserved

Onetahua or Farewell Spit, the Northernmost tip of Te Waipounamu

Wharariki beach, recognisable to the keen eye as the location where the iconic lock screen background for Windows 10 was made

(I saw a seal and thought it was dead but other hikers reassured me it was just sound asleep! 🤗)

The Grove, a small but impressive nature reserve with artistic Karst rock formations

And finally, today I hiked the Pupu valley. Light clouds were passing over the hilltops and raining out softly, and together with the morning sun they created a bright masterpiece:

I didn't see another soul the entire hike, save for the robins, shags, tūi, kereru, and even a little kingfisher! It was refreshing and invigorating.

I spent my afternoon finally properly exploring Tākaka. My biggest recommendation for anybody going there is Trash Palace, an op shop where every article of clothing only costs $1! I splurged a little and spent 5 whole dollars 🤭

So, what now?

Despite feeling homesick, I'm not about to turn around and head home. I'm trying to reconnect with the mindset that this is the holiday part of the working holiday, I am here for myself and nobody else, and I'm here to have a good time. So I'll be heading back to Whakatū to stock up on Dutch liquorice from the international store, rest up, and then make my way further South, probably along the East coast. I've posted some requests online asking if any other van dwellers are in the area, and if so, whether they'd be interested in forming a caravan. I really feel the need to connect with other travelers, and it doesn't happen as naturally now as on other trips, when I used public transportation and stayed in hostels. Those are great places to meet people, but of course I'm not using them while I have Elrond. Still figuring out how to feel a little less alone on the road!

This somewhat traumatised-looking bird, spotted in the Green Dragon tavern at Hobbiton, is from the most widespread bird species in New Zealand. Unfortunately it’s also introduced. Also known as the Eurasian Blackbird.

In their native range they breed in Europe, Asiatic Russia, and North Africa, and may be year-round residents, partially migratory, or fully migratory depending on local climate. It has a number of subspecies across its range; a few of the Asian subspecies are regarded as separate species by some authors.

The species was introduced to Australia by a bird dealer visiting Melbourne in early 1857, and to New Zealand in 1862, and in both countries is considered a pest because of the damage they do to fruit crops and their ability to spread the seeds of weeds like blackberry. On the other hand, they are also pollinators of the South American feijoa fruit, which is a popular fruit in New Zealand, spreading the pollen as they eat the juicy petals. Beyond that they’re omnivorous, eating a wide range of insects, and earthworms, as well a wide range of native and exotic berries and fruit.

The adult males are all black except for a yellow eye-ring and bill and have a richly melodious song - females and juveniles are mostly dark brown. They breed in woods and gardens, building a neat, cup-shaped nest, bound together with mud. Both sexes are territorial in the breeding season.

As a common and conspicuous species, there are a good number of literary and cultural references, frequently related to its song, but also baked into pies, delivered as Christmas gifts (’four colly birds’), and regarded as sacred but destructive by the Ancient Greeks. Unusually for a black animal, not regarded as evil.
