ok so if mujhse dosti karoge means will you be my friend
and if pyaar dosti hai means love is friendship
and if dosti from rrr is the song all about being best buddies and nothing else
then
does the movie title dostana then translate to something about friendship??
did they "and they were roommates (but literally they are)" the audience??

ateez watching indian movies with you
Tumblr media
author's note: i'm a brown atiny who majored in film aka bollywood/indian movies are a huge part of my identity— i was watching kal ho naa ho the other night nd was thinking abt whether or not atz would watch indian movies w me and what their reactions would be. also, i def missed a huge chunk of movies so pls excuse me ehe
taglist: @k-hotchoisan @eyeryis @sinnarols @aaasia111 @sunshineangel-reads apply for the permanent taglist here!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
hongjoong: this poor baby he's so dedicated to his work but would do his best to make time for the two of you to watch a three hour long indian movie with you, only to fall asleep part way through. he'd last the first 10-15 minutes then pass out, and if you're watching a south indian film, he'll immediately wake tf up when a gun goes off or during the first fight scene. he'd really want to watch rrr with you but fully fall asleep, only to be scared awake during the scene with ntr jr (bheem) wrestling the tiger and be scared shitless from there. however, if you're watching a romcom? gl bc the man is definitely fully asleep and will wake up at the end and say, "that was good i enjoyed it!" you want to be mad at him, but he looks so well rested that you're glad he enjoyed the movie in some way, shape, or crazy form. but fr he'd love the movies that are super detailed and conceptual like if he watched pushpa: the rise, he's definitely highly anticipating pushpa: the rule. he's a 2 part film kinda guy imo he loves the long development and the intensive research and the dedication a director puts into his work. i think he's a rajamouli guy for sure. maybe even like sholay, lagaan, english vinglish— you get the idea.
Tumblr media
seonghwa: seonghwa's a super emotional audience member— everything affects him so deeply, especially scenes with heartbreak or little kids. like, the scene in kuch kuch hota hai where kajol (anjali) finds out that srk (rahul) is in love with rani mukherji (tina) and she's just sobbing and then the song plays? hwa is fully sobbing. he's like clinging to you and drying his eyes and you're patting his back while whispering "it's just a movie it's okay" but it's not okay because unrequited love HURTS. he's definitely more of a bollywood romcom person and probably will want to binge all of srk's movies with you one night, and during the most romantic songs, he'll stand up and copy the iconic srk stance (you know the one with his arms stretched out and then the female lead runs into his arms) and he'll 100% expect you to run into his arms. he's a karan johar bitch fr... either karan johar or yrf. i feel like he wouldn't really vibe with south indian films and end up preferring the sappy, bollywood romcom. but, he's totally an indian serial slut and would binge everything like there's no tomorrow (yeh rishta, iss pyaar ko kya naam doon?, bade achhe lagte hain, and so on) but in terms of movies, he'd love kabhi alvida naa kehna, kabhi kushi khabi gham, kal ho naa ho, dostana, kuch kuch hota hai, chalte chalte (just call him an srk stan and move on).
Tumblr media
yunho: one word: golmaal. he would love the shit outta rohit shetty i'm telling you. like, yes, he appreciates the fine cinema that comes from india, but rohit shetty's got him rolling on the floor in fits. yunho gives such bakwas indian movie vibes but we're here for it— like, the dumbassary in golmaal 2 is everything to him, and chennai express would send him into fits (especially the drunk srk scene). he'd also 100% get up on his feet and start dancing to the upbeat songs in the films more than anything, though, he would fully make fun of the super dramatic scenes with the bawling and sobbing— and i'm not talking about truly tragic scenes but like when the sadness is overdramatic and it suddenly starts raining while the main character is crying (specifically the song tujhe yaad na meri aayee from kuch kuch hota hai) so it's safer to stick to the dumb funny movies... maybe give good newwz a whirl
Tumblr media
yeosang: yeosangie is happy to do anything and everything with you even if he knows the movie will confuse the shit outta him. you'd probably start the guy off on the sequel to a movie (my brain immediately went don 2 or dhoom 2) and he'll be so mad confused the whole time, so he'll keep asking you questions during the movie because he wants to be just as invested in it as you are. more than anything, though, he's more invested in you explaining the movie because of how passionately you talk about the plot and the characters and the dialogue— you might as well forego the movie and just describe the movie to him while spooning in bed. that being said, he'd probably also rewatch the movie a couple of times to fully wrap his head around the film now that he's acquired your commentary and can pair it with the visuals in the film. either that or the poor thing would fall asleep... but he'd fall asleep on your shoulder and just sink into your embrace so fuck the movie just cuddle and take a nap while armaan malik sings in the background
Tumblr media
san: san is such a wild card imo but let's be real i feel like he'd be such a horndog while watching movies so it doesn't even matter what movie you put on he'll only be half present, especially if the don series or race series or lust stories is playing oh dear god don't show this man cocktail if you want to actually watch a movie with you... or pathaan dear lord help BUT i feel like he'd be more interested in the family related movies— like where family is everything so k3g, ala vaikunthapurramuloo, bomarillu, chillar party, main hoon na, tararumpum, etc. also maybe even the ones about friendship, so zindagi naa milegi dobara, 3 idiots, dil chahta hai, jaane tu ya jaane na, rang de basanti, kai po che— again, the wildest of cards. he'd be down to see anything honestly. anything for his love wink wonk
Tumblr media
mingi: god this boy i feel like he would ask all the questions in the world like every other dialogue it's just another question (but they're all related to the movie so it's... okay?) but he just won't have the patience to wait for the next scene to answer his question. no, he wants to know from you so movies like 83, chak de india, dil bole hadippa, paan singh tomar, jersey (BUT THE TELUGU ONE JFC NOT THE HINDI ONE I CANNOT EMPHASIZE ENOUGH), dangal, basically any sports movie would be best for him because most of his questions would be about the sport so there's no chance of you spoiling the movie for him but i feel like he'd also be a huge priyanka chopra fan but some of her filmography is........ traumatizing? confusing? i'm thinking fashion specifically for trauma while what's your raashee? is just so unbelievably confusing. he'd also like deepika padukone, alia bhaat, samantha, rashmika— as long as she's pretty and a talented actress, mingi's gonna vibe
Tumblr media
wooyoung: indian movies are his jam imo he'd get up on his feet every single song and dance his heart out even if the song is super duper sad (man's is fully dancing to naatu naatu but then also sadly jamming to komuram bheemudo two seconds later the duality is insane). his favorite actors are definitely allu arjun, vijay, hrithik roshan, varun dhawan, tamannaah— and he would rewatch the shit outta abcd and dhoom 2 because the dance numbers are truly impeccable. movies like abcd, rab ne bana di jodi, chance pe dance are right up his alley but i also feel like he'd have fun watching bunty aur babli, jhoom barabar jhoom, race gurram, etc. he's a happy-go-lucky kinda movie guy, imo
Tumblr media
jongho: jongho's the type to be super judgmental but like in the best way possible. he sits and watches the movie quietly with his arms crossed over his chest and his eyebrows furrowed. super quiet and super serious. you sneak glances at him every so often but you seriously can't tell what's going on in his head until he debriefs you after the movie is done, which could go one of two ways: he spares your feelings and tells you he likes the movie (if you tell him that this movie is your most favorite movie in the world) or be completely straightforward with you and dive into an in-depth film analysis. i feel like he'd prefer the movies with gorgeous soundtracks though and want to learn to sing some of the songs (we hate kabir singh in this house but bekhayali would shake his world, and fanaa oh lord he would love that ost with all of his heart... maybe even the main hoon na ost) but lordy any ost with sid sriram is his JAM

(old) bollywood actresses (1)
why am i making this post...... no reason apart from being incredibly queer abt women (not romantic not sexual but a secret third thing (fan)). join me etc.
ruby myers (stage name sulochana)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DADASAHEB PHALKE AWARD WINNER WHO CHEERED!!!!!!!!!!!
born in poona (now pune) in 1907 in british india, ruby myers was a silent film actress of bhagdadi jewish ancestry. she was approached by mohan bhavnani from kohinoor films, and though she was initially hesitant (acting was a very.... suspicious? dubious? profession for women at the time) she agreed with little knowledge of how to act. she ended up becoming a huge star under bhavnani, and then moved on to imperial film company, and became the highest paid actress in india at the time (5k/mo inr salary).
after sound got introduced, she took a break for a year (to learn hindustani which she wasn't fluent in) and came back with madhuri (1932)--- this is a remale of madhuri (1928) but w sound--- and became a star again. other remakes of her silent movies were bombay ki billi (1936) (remake of wildcat of bombay 1927), and anarkali (1935), a remake of anarkali (1928). unfortunately i don't think even one of these films survived.
she was also in a popular pairing with actor d billimoria from 1933-39. she faded into obscurity after their split.
she was also in another anarkali (1953), where she played salim's mother, and had a small role as a nun in dostana (1980).
she died in mumbai in 1983.

florence ezekiel (nadira)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
born in 1932 in bhagdad, and living in nagpada (south bombay) after her parents moved for business reasons, nadira was a famous bollywood actress who usually played westernised roles (or anglo-indian ones). she is mostly well known for her role as julie's mother margaret in julie (1975) and maya in shree 420 (1956). the latter typecasted her in seductress roles. she has worked with several actors like sridevi (in julie), nargis (in shree 420), srk (josh (2000)).
fun fact! a filmmaker (idk who he was) once called her up for a role to which she replied along the lines of "not now i'm drunk and naked." he never called her again.
less fun fact! she was an alcoholic and had an alcohol-related liver disorder. she died in 2006 in a hospital in tardeo.

Sebcedes+val au? SEBCEDES+VAL AU??????
YEAH SO. it is messy and chaotic and the funniest thing @ayceeofspades and i have ever done, which is saying something because we're hilarious and our DMs should be archived for posterity.
ANYWAY SO. it started out as us joking about bollywood AUs and i was like. sebvalewis dostana au.
featuring lewis as the hot girl who needs roommates but prefers couples
seb and val who are only vaguely acquainted but both need a place to live
they see the flat. they like it. they see lewis. they like him. their ingenious solution? pretend to be together and move in
they move in
the obvious problem: they can barely stand each other and also they're both trying to date lewis who is gloriously and blissfully oblivious to this fuckery
at some point nico got involved
this was version 1.
version 2 is a similar story but with sico as the fake dating couple and val as the upstairs neighbor. this one features:
sico constantly trying to murder each other while lewis just goes on with his life
when it all gets too much (attempted homicide at the dinner table or on movie night for instance) he just goes upstairs to hang out w val
sebcedes is a thing so val's like "are your boyfriends fucking or fighting i can't tell" and lewis is like "babe i can't either" n they just hang out until the sounds of murder from downstairs have ceased
somehow val gets pulled into the polycule because trying to put val n lewis near each other without them banging is a nigh impossible task
attempted murder is sico's love language
the sexual dynamics are... interesting
their neighbors despise them
idk if this will ever be written or if it's destined to live in our DMs (and now here ig) forever but!! it is one of my FAVORITE things ever. c babes please do mention anything i might have missed. also we should name it something. old man polycule extended universe or sth idk

Re:the Priyam/Dosti thing! I did want to share a neat fact! For a good chunk of time in the 2000s early 10s the term 'Dostana' for which dosti is a kind of root word was connected to gay relationships because of the bollywood film dostana which explicitly discussed gayness as a high profile film. Even though it featured two straight characters pretending to be gay it did have a m/m kiss at the end and was the work of Karen joher whose gayness is kind of an open secret in the industry. So while it's unlikely that the translaters specifically were thinking about the association with dostana the film. There is actually a good chunk of subtext you can read into it based on the choice of the word dosti specifically. At least enough to do some textual analysis if nothing else lol. As always an absolute delight to see you enjoying Indian media!
OMG, that is SO interesting!!!
And well, so far it's mostly Ram Charan and Tarak movies (the only one without them I've seen is Baahubali 1 and 2 and I count them as one) but I am in love with the portrayal of the culture, even when I understand these movies are action flicks first and foremost.
I'm now even trying to learn some Hindu with duolingo and telugu with link so I can watch MORE movies without having to hunt subtitles!

From Goa to Maldives: The Ultimate Bollywood Beach Playlist for Your Next Vacation
Tumblr media
Grab your sunglases, pack your swimsuit, and get ready to dance in the sand because we have the ultimate Bollywood beach playlist for your next vacation! Whether you’re lounging on the shores of Goa or soaking up the sun in Maldives, these tunes are guaranteed to transport you straight into a Bollywood movie scene. So turn up the volume and let’s dive into our top picks for a perfect day at the beach with some seriously groovy beats.
Introduction to Bollywood and its Music
Bollywood, the vibrant and thriving Indian film industry, has captured the hearts of millions worldwide with its captivating storytelling, colorful visuals, and, of course, its soul-stirring music. The music of Bollywood plays an integral role in shaping the emotions and narratives of the films, creating a unique identity that sets it apart from other cinematic experiences.
Bollywood films are characterized by colorful costumes, vibrant music, and elaborate dance sequences. Bollywood movies are often musicals, and feature songs that are integrated into the story. These songs are known as “filmi” songs, and are often very popular in their own right.
Bollywood music is characterized by catchy melodies, energetic rhythms, and emotional lyrics. Filmi songs often make use of traditional Indian instruments such as the sitar, tabla, and sarangi, as well as Western instruments.
If you’re looking for some Bollywood tunes to get you in the mood for your next beach vacation, check out our ultimate Bollywood beach playlist below!
Top 10 Bollywood Songs About Beaches
Bollywood has always been fascinated by the beach. Whether it’s shooting a romantic song against the backdrop of the setting sun or a group of friends frolicking in the waves, there’s something about the beach that just makes for good cinema. Here are our top 10 Bollywood songs about beaches:
“Oh Girl You are Mine” – Housefull “Party On My Mind” – Race 2 “Tumhi Ho Bandhu” – Cocktail “Sunny Sunny” – Yaariyan “Shut Up And Bounce” – Dostana “Salaam Namaste” – Salaam Namaste “Slowly Slowly” – Go Goa Gone “Ghungroo Toot Gaye” – War “Besharam Rang” – Pathaan “Aaj Dil Gustakh Hai” – Blue
These songs are known for their catchy tunes, beach visuals, and foot-tapping beats that make them popular choices for beach parties or a fun day at the shore.
How to Create a Beach Playlist for Your Next Vacation
When it comes to packing for a beach vacation, there are a few essential items you’ll need: sunscreen, swimsuits, and of course, a great playlist. Whether you’re headed to Goa or the Maldives, we’ve got the perfect Bollywood beach playlist to get you in the vacation mindset. The right music can create the perfect ambiance, set the mood, and make your time by the ocean even more memorable.
Consider the Vibe:
Start by envisioning the overall vibe you want to create with your playlist. Are you looking for a relaxing and laid-back atmosphere, or do you want to infuse your beach experience with high-energy and excitement? Consider the type of beach you’re visiting, the activities you plan to engage in, and the overall mood you want to set. This will help you select songs that align with your desired beach experience.
Include Beach-themed Songs:
To capture the essence of the beach, incorporate songs that directly reference the ocean, sand, sun, or summer. Look for tracks that have lyrics or titles related to the beach. These songs will instantly transport you to the seaside and add a touch of tropical charm to your playlist.
Explore Genres:
Beach playlists don’t have to be limited to a specific genre. Experiment with different styles of music to cater to different moods and preferences. Consider including genres such as reggae, tropical house, surf rock, indie pop, or even Bollywood beach tracks. Mix and match various genres to create an eclectic playlist that keeps things interesting.
Balance Upbeat and Chill:
A well-rounded beach playlist strikes a balance between lively, upbeat tunes and more relaxed, soothing tracks. Include energetic songs to keep the energy high during beach games, water activities, or parties. Simultaneously, include softer melodies that allow you to unwind, soak up the sun, and enjoy the serene beauty of the beach.
Timeless Classics and Contemporary Hits:
Blend timeless classics with current chart-toppers to appeal to a wide range of musical tastes. Iconic beach-themed songs like “Kokomo” by The Beach Boys or “Under the Boardwalk” by The Drifters will evoke a sense of nostalgia, while recent hits can add a fresh and modern touch to your playlist.
Collaborative Playlist:
Involve your travel companions in the playlist creation process by setting up a collaborative playlist. Encourage everyone to contribute their favorite beach tracks, ensuring that everyone’s tastes and preferences are represented. This collaborative effort will make the playlist more diverse and personalized, creating a memorable soundtrack for your vacation.
Mood Transitions and Flow:
Consider the flow and mood transitions between songs to ensure a seamless listening experience. Group together songs with similar energy levels or complementary themes. Arrange the playlist in a way that builds up and eases down when needed, creating a dynamic yet cohesive journey through the music.
Conclusion
With this Bollywood beach playlist, you can look forward to an exciting vacation full of fun and unique experiences. From the beaches of Goa to the beautiful waters of Maldives, these songs are sure to get your toes tapping and your heart racing as you explore all that these amazing destinations have to offer. So what are you waiting for? Pack up those bags – it’s time for a memorable vacation!

can you recommend some bollywood movies?
of course!!! i’ve been waiting for someone to ask me this omg — so i do not speak hindi, i’m telugu, but i did grow up on quite a few of these movies!!!
for anyone starting out with bollywood, i would recommend trying the classics, like dilwale dulhania le jayenge (prime video) or kabhi khushi kabhi gham (netflix and prime).
those two can be kinda hard to follow if you’re not familiar with indian culture, so for more “western” movies i would try dostana (prime) or happy new year (which is on netflix, not amazing but very fun!)
i’m a diehard shah rukh khan fan so i would recommend most of his movies (not dil se though, don’t even go near that one). a lot of them are available on netflix or prime video!
as far as my personal recs go:
-om shanti om (nflix) is one of my faves it’s just gorgeous and the music is AMAZING
-jab we met (nflix) fun romcom with another great soundtrack
-yeh jawani hai deewani (idk where it streams) is another romcom with a killer soundtrack as well
-gangubai kathiawadi (nflix) is a new movie, it’s super dark, and it’s about a woman running a brothel (kind of). i watched it the other week and it was amazing!
-bahubali parts 1 and 2 (two movies, nflix) aren’t hindi, they’re telugu, but netflix has the hindi dub! two of the best movies to ever hit indian cinemas imo.
there are a lot more i can recommend, mostly telugu-language — but these are all the ones off the top of my head! let me know if this helps!!

just saw ur bollywood rewrites started jumping up and down im so excited havent even read them. yet but. DHOOM 2 AND RONANCE OH I COLLAPSED
YAYAY!! ❤️❤️ I hope you enjoy reading the bollywood rewrites as much as I've enjoyed writing them!! :D 💖💖
Originally the idea of Bollywood rewrites came to me while rewatching SOTY post s4 and wanting a ronance AU so bad 😭 it's currently on the back burner while I work on finishing the ronance s1 rewrite but I hope to get back into that AU soon!! ❤️
The Dostana AU was partially motivated by spite LMAOO the urge to prove to KJ that if him and the writers weren't cowards!! they could've made an actual queer storyline!! 💀💀 But I digress...
DHOOM 2 is such a fever dream it's so silly and campy but also so real like there's so much potential with a ST rewrite for it 👀
have a nice day/night and tysm again!! ❤️❤️

There was a moment a bit back, I don't remember exactly which movie I was watching when I had this thought, where it seemed like Abhishek Bachchan had finally found his own footing. For the longest time, and probably quite honestly forever, he'll always be in the shadow of his father. But while earlier it seemed like he got roles that people thought his father would have done well in back in his heyday, Abhishek has shown a willingness to break away and do unconventional sorts of roles. I mean, he's no Ayushmann Khurrana or anything, but he is definitely someone that has become much more enjoyable to watch in his roles.
The Big Bull, Bob Biswas, Dhoom (of course), Dostana, Housefull 3, Bol Bachchan - and now, without doubt, this one. This movie is a lot of fun almost immediately, and definitely once he gets in jail and once Yami Gautam shows up. And as things progress, you find yourself having a lot of fun with it. It sort of takes on the education system, maybe as Taare Zameen Par and 3 Idiots did, but without the emotional tugs of the former or the slightly overly-exaggerated delivery scene of the latter, and keeps things entertaining even as it sort of tells 2 simultaneous stories - his in the prison, his wife's as the CM.
I mean, obviously he also benefits from a very individualized study focus and plan - all his "teachers' gear their teachings to things he understands, which obviously cannot happen in an actual school setting where you have tons of students who all have different interests and different things that would make sense to them.
However, with that said - there's a lot to be said for the power of education, and that initial emphasis on 'history repeats itself' is brilliant. And while it won't do anything cuz politicians are asshats, it is nice to see the story. Maybe one day someone in power will actually give a damn.
It's also sad how this thing that has been so common their, especially in movies but even in real life, about corrupt politicians literally being treated like celebrities (the riots, the fanfare, etc.) is becoming a thing here too. Backwards.
'Absolute power corrupts absolutely' is such a brilliant statement to sum up his wife's transition in this movie - and while it is sad to see to corruption and power-hungry craze set in, it is nice to see how they portray it happening and, when threatened with the loss of this power, how she reacts. That is the problem with power, of course. And that is why there needs to be some limits on the power, and some requirements for whom can be in power - something about humanity and what-not. Because otherwise you end up in a backwards-moving condition.
All 3 of our leads in this movie are absolutely brilliant, and the interactions between all 3 of them are genuinely great (and, frequently, funny). The dialogues we get between Abhishek and Yami are a ton of fun - and his progression throughout the movie, even if he doesn't want to admit it, is very well portrayed.
There was a major misfire a bit back with Sanam Re, but between her roles in Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga and this movie, Yami Gautam is definitely doing a great job at picking her roles lately (even A Thursday, which I haven't seen, is supposed to be pretty dang good).
The song Macha Macha Re is a lot of fun, and will definitely be playing on repeat at work tomorrow.
Yeah, this is an excellent movie.
