Of Lessons and Losses
Of Moments of Life AU
———————————————————————————————————
Arguing drew Dreadwing’s attention away from the datapad he was reading–which contained an uncomfortable degree of Autobot propaganda and censoring about the start of the War–and to the doorway of the lounge area, where Blades and Dani were entering from the smaller room that contained the elevators.
“We’ve done that maneuver a hundred times, Blades! You shouldn’t still be messing it up! It’s easy !” Dani scolded the rotary, her tone frustrated and stiff.
“No it’s not !” Blades argued, the faintest note of hysteria underlying his voice that Dreadwing doubted human ears were able to pick up on. “I know you think it is, Dani, and that’s you’ve done it with Earth copters before, but you’re not the one doing the actual flying!”
“So what? You’re even better than an Earth copter, it should be a cakewalk for you!”
“I’m not a sparked flyer!” The mechling all but wailed. “There’s so much sensory data to take in when you’re that high up, especially above the ocean, and it’s hard to process it all and pull of complicated maneuvers at the same time!”
“Blades, I don’t know what that means, and I don’t know what it has to do with-“
Dreadwing moved in, cutting off the argument before it could devolve. “That’s enough.” he stated.
Dani snapped her head over to him, blinking rapidly. “Dreadwing! What do you mean?”
“It does no good to berate Blades for something he cannot help. He is right, regardless. Flyers have a much more advanced sensor-net. For one who was not sparked for the skies, the learning curve to understand such data would be immense.”
Dani just blinked, looking more confused. He sighed. “Go ask Boulder about a Cybertronian sensor suite, and ask him to explain the difference between the sensors of a grounder and those of a flyer. Once you understand, perhaps it will be easier for you to comprehend Blades’s difficulties in the air.” he paused. “Also, be sure to ask Boulder about grounders and sky-terror.” When he didn’t elaborate, the human sighed and nodded, trudging off and grumbling to herself.
The seeker turned to the young rotary, humming. Blades was looking at him, and shifted on his pedes. “…sky-terror?” He asked.
The larger bot nodded. “Yes. It is very common for ground frames to have an innate fear of the sky. It is in their very coding, and difficult to ignore. Grounders are meant to be on the ground, after all. They are not meant to be in the air, and thus it makes them more nervous when they cannot put wheels or pedes to the floor.”
“So…it’s not weird that I’m scared of flying?”
“Not at all. Your frame and processor remember that only a short time ago, you possessed wheels rather than rotors. Even with the fear coding no longer present in your systems, your processor still is not yet used to flight. Give it time. You are doing remarkably well, little one.” he soothed.
Blades looked up from where he was twisting his digits together, servos pressed tight to his canopy. “…really?”
“Really.” He assured. “You will overcome the instinctive fear in time. Until then, you must work on the technical aspects of flight. Improve upon your foundations, and when the time comes that you no longer fear the open skies you can begin more complicated maneuvers.”
Blades sighed. “That’s just it, Dreadwing. I don’t know the foundations. Dani does, but she doesn’t really explain. She learned them ages ago, and I think she expects me to already know them cause I’m well…I’m a flyer.” he said helplessly.
Ah. Now he understood the problem. The young rotary needed to learn the most basic principles of flight, but his partner was an experienced pilot and assumed the young bot already knew them when he in fact did not. She was not cruel in her actions then, but it seemed she simply did not understand the full scope of the young mech’s unique position.
“In that case,” he tilted his helm, gaze sharp. “Perhaps you would like some lessons? I am not a rotary , but I have known many. And even if I did not, many of the basic principles are the same. I can at the very least help in that regard.”
Blades looked up, grinning. “Really?” he said eagerly.
“Indeed. Let us go to the nearby island, then, so we will not be seen by locals.”
“Wayward Island?” Blades blinked, then shrugged. “Okay. Sure.” he agreed, though he looked nervous.
“Is…there a problem, youngling?”
“Well, no. It’s just. Weird stuff happens on that island.” He explained.
Dreadwing hummed. “Would you prefer to practice elsewhere?” He did not care where, as long as it was out of sight.
“No, Wayward Island is fine.” Blades said hurriedly. “It’s the best place, really.” There was a pause, and he looked down at his pedes. “Even if it is terrifying.” He mumbled under his breath.
Dreadwing nodded, deciding not to comment on the last statement. Blades would learn, and he would adjust. The Seeker would not let anything happen to him besides. He strode to the platform lift that would take them to the room. “Then let us be on our way.” he heard the soft scuff of smaller pedes following him, and when they were both on the lift he activated it to bring them up.
Blades transformed and took off first, and then Dreadwing followed suit, and soon they were on their way. They stayed low enough to not get caught in the bigger drafts of wind, and it wasn’t long before they arrived on the shore. As Blades went to land, Dreadwing swooped under him to cut him off.
“Stay in the air, youngling. These are flying lessons.” he reminded.
The young helo whined a complaint, but didn’t try to land again. “So…what’s lesson one?” he asked, seemingly nervous.
Dreadwing hummed. “Gaining altitude. I want you to fly as high as you can, straight up. Concentrate on how the air changes around your frame as you climb higher.” he instructed.
“What good does that do?” Blades squeaked, clearly nervous.
“Spatial awareness. You focus too much on your nerves and fear when you fly. If you wish to improve, you must start understanding how the air and wind moves around you when you are in the sky.” Dreadwing explained patiently. His voice softened marginally for his next words. “Worry not, young one. I will be right below you. If you fall, I am more than capable of catching you.”
Blades gulped audibly, and after a moment he nodded and started to climb higher.
“Talk to me.” Dreadwing instructed. “Tell me what you’re feeling, and what your sensors are telling you.” He said, following the youngling up.
Blades hummed, sounding nervous. “Um….pressure is decreasing as I get higher. Temperature too.” He came to a sudden stop as he broke the cloud layer, a nervous sound leaving him. “I…don’t think I should go higher.”
“Explain.” Dreadwing said patiently. He knew why, but he wanted the youngling to grasp the answer on his own.
“I have a bad feeling. It’s pretty cold up here, and I’m not sure my rotors can take it if I go too high. They’re already starting to feel numb at the tips.”
“Good.” Dreadwing said, prompting a noise of surprise from the youngling. “You’re in tune enough with your new frame and coding to understand its limits. You are correct. If a rotary such as yourself flies too high, you risk causing your rotors to freeze and you will drop from the sky.” he said bluntly. His words made Blades squeak and drop a few feet before he caught himself.
“You need not worry about that. You are a strong flyer for such a new one. You have good instincts.”
That seemed to surprise the youngling. “I….do? But I can’t ever seem to fly right.”
The Seeker hummed with amusement. “Allow me to rephrase. You have good instincts, when you use them. ” he said, a hint of a tease in his tone.
It was enough to make Blades laugh softly, as the youngling seemingly began to calm. “Thanks, I think.”
“You are welcome.” Dreadwing said dryly. “But keep talking. Tell me what you are feeling and sensing.”
“Oh.” Blades hummed. “Um…the air is chilly on my rotors here. And the pressure difference is weird, but not uncomfortable. I feel the wind moving the most over my tail…” he trailed off, making a soft noise.
“Youngling?” Dreadwing prompted.
“It changed. The wind, I mean. It’s flowing differently. What does that mean?”
“It could mean many things. Let us go below the clouds.” he said, moving down and hearing the copter follow. “Wind changes are common in the air. If you wish to master flight, you must always be aware of the changes. Sometimes, the changes occur for no reason. Other times, because it signifies an oncoming change in weather. Cast out with your sensors. What are they telling you?”
Blades hummed and then made a surprised noise. “Oh. There’s something on the edge of my sensors. It feels…like a charge of some sort?”
Oh?
Dreading cast out with his own sensors, picking up on what Blades was talking about. He huffed through his vents. “What do you think that is?” He asked.
The youngling hummed again, obviously in thought. “Well…it feels…like a strong static charge. It’s chilly, but like… wet chilly. So….a storm?” He guessed.
“You’d be correct.” Dreadwing stated. “And it is coming fast. Come. I saw a cave on the island. The storm is approaching quicker, being pushed by a headwind. We will not have time to return to Griffin Rock, and you are not ready for a flying lesson on storm flight.”
Blades squeaked with fear, and hurried to follow as the Seeker let the way to the cave he’d seen in the cliff face. They landed just as the first rain drops started to fall, and the youngling darted to the back of the cave at the first clap of thunder. Dreadwing followed more sedately, setting next to the Rescue Bot where he was tucked into the back corner of the cave.
They sat in silence, staring towards the entrance of the cave as the storm began to pick up. After a moment, Dreadwing heard Blades reset his vocalizer.
“…Dreadwing?”
“Hm?” He looked to the smaller mech out of the corner of his optic.
“Does it ever stop hurting?” he said softly.
“Pardon?” He suspected he knew what the mechling was talking about, but he didn’t want to assume.
His suspicion was proven correct when Blades pressed a servo to his chest, over the Rescue Bot emblem where his spark pulsed beneath the metal. “The bond.” he whispered. “Does…does it ever get better?”
And Primus, but the pained, aching hope in the youngling’s voice made Dreadwing’s own spark ache with something sharp and visceral. “…no.” He admitted, and made no protest when Blades released a wounded noise and abruptly threw himself self into the Seeker’s lap.
Instead, he wrapped his arms around him, extending his EM field to blanket the shaking frame and try to soothe the raw pain in the immature field meeting his own. His optics went dim and distant, remembering the agony and grief he’d experienced in the wake of Skyquake’s death. The pain that had very nearly dragged him after his brother to the Well. Some days, even now, he wished it had.
“The pain never fades, Blades. It will remain sharp and clear and agonizing, every day for the rest of your existence. It gets easier to manage in time, it’s weight easier to bear, but it never fades.” A wounded keen was released against his cockpit, and Dreadwing sighed heavily, tightening his grip around the youngling in his arms.
“But you must not give up hope.” he said gently, moving one of his servos to instead tip Blades’s face up to his. “Your brothers may yet still live. I know the bond aches, I know your spark reaches desperately for connections that are faded, for other sparks that it cannot find. I know it is painful, that sometimes it hurts enough to make getting out of the berth in the morning feel as daunting as facing a Predacon. I know how it feels like a burn in your spark, sharp enough to send you to your knees at its worst. I know there is a part of you, buried somewhere deep and dark, that wants to give in, that wishes the pain would overwhelm you so you can join the Well and be reunited with the sparks that sing the same song as your own.” There was an aching tone to his voice, his armor shaking faintly with grief and longing and pain.
His words made Blades sob, pulling back enough to free his face before he shoved back against his cockpit. Dreadwing could feel the cool, wet tears of coolant that spilled from Blades’s optics, an attempt by his frame to cool him in addition to heaving vents as the grief and stress made him run the risk of overheating. He didn’t tell him to stop, or try to get the young rotary to calm down. There were no words he could say, no assurances he could give that would soothe the pain and the fear. Instead, he raised a servo and gently cupped the back of his helm, one large thumb rubbing a twitching audial fin. His action had Blades freezing for a moment, and then the youngling was sobbing harder, his grip growing tighter as he pressed desperately in the warmth and comfort his newly acquired caretaker was giving.
It made Dreadwing’s spark ache anew, but he let Blades weep into his chest. Outside, the storm raged on, the winds howling and thunder crashing, but even that wasn’t enough to drown out the sound of the mechling’s grief. Lightning lit up the mouth of the cave in one brief flash, but then they were cast back into semi-darkness.
Dreadwing did not speak for several minutes, not until the sound of Blades’s sobs died down, though the shaking of his frame never ceased. When he was more sure he’d be heard, he spoke again. “I know you are scared.” he murmured. “But you have hope, little one.” At that, Blades’s helm tilted just enough to bare one dim, watery optic. “Your brothers are separated from you, but they may very well still live. I know the uncertainty is an entirely different form of frightening to you, but in that uncertainty there is also hope. You must not give up that hope, Blades. As bleak as it may seem, you may one day see them again. If you lose hope, then you lose everything.” he said somberly. “As long as you still have hope, your spark will burn strong for long enough to learn the fates of your brothers. I cannot promise that news will be good, but if Primus is watching over you, then you will see them again.”
“And is He?”
“Hm?”
He looked down, two ruby optics needing a dull emerald one.
“Is He watching over me? Over us?”
Dreadwing sighed. “Maybe.” he said softly. “His reach is far lessened, so far from His frame. His influence was already weak before the war, when all His children called Cybertron home. Now, with our planet in ruins and our people scattered to the stars, He has even less influence. But He loves us, for all I believe He may loathe our conflict. I do not think He ever stopped watching, even if He cannot influence our paths how He once could.” The Seeker rumbled.
Blades swallowed. “Do you….do you think He’ll guide my brothers to me? Or me to them?”
“I think He will try, little one. I think He will try his very hardest to see you reunited with those your spark longs for. Whether He succeeds, we can leave up only to time.”
“So…we can only hope.” Blades rasped softly, frame shaking as he continued to cry even now.
“We can only hope.” Dreadwing agreed somberly.
Blades released a massive, shuddering ex-vent of air. His optics dimmed further, and he turned his face back into Dreadwing’s chest. The Seeker sighed, his thumb still rubbing a twitching finial, and his over servo pressing the youngling further into his chest and rubbing his back between his rotor blades.
“Rest, little one. You’ve had a stressful day. You’re young yet, and this much excitement will exhaust you. I will stay here. When the storm breaks, I will wake you and we will return to the firehouse.” he rumbled.
He heard an assenting mumble from his chest, and soon enough the whirring of Blades’s systems quieted as he slipped into recharge. Dreadwing sighed heavily, and looked back out at the storm.
Thunder crashed, and the youngling in his hold shifted, but a gentle stroke down his back settled and stilled him once more. The sky had grown dim and overcast with the storm by now, and the lack of light meant that the rain stood stark against the black clouds that cast shadows and darkness on the earth below. In the distance, his sensitive audials picked up the sound of the ocean, the waves crashing into the shore of the island as the winds screamed above the surface of the roiling water.
His processor wandered, optics unseeing as he stared at the mouth of the cave let himself think about his brother for the first time since he’d learned of Skyquake’s true fate.
Dreadwing knew that Primus did indeed love all His creations, but the Seeker could not help but think that fate, perhaps, was cruel. Their Creator would not have allowed such a sacred bond to be severed so horribly, had He the power to influence the matter. He was sure of that. So he could only determine that He had not had the power to do anything about it. It made him wonder if He had to power to return Blades’s brothers to him, if the other younglings were indeed even still alive.
His gaze slid down to the recharging flier in his lap, his face wet with drying tears, and for the first time since before Vos fell Dreadwing found himself praying to a Creator he was not even sure could still hear him.
And for the first time since the bond in his spark snapped and shattered like the finest filigree, coolant slid down his own faceplates as he wept and allowed himself to grieve over a loss he had not yet had the chance the mourn.
———————————————————————————————————
So that was that! How’d you all like it? Let me know what you thought. This piece was pretty personal too, so it’d really mean a lot to hear your thoughts on it and the rest of the series.
But the good news! Next time it’s time for Blades to start on the path towards proper closure. What that means precisely, I will not say.
Anyway, I’m out for now!
Until next time, folks!

Behind the Playlist - Transformers: Prime Edition (Part 8 of 22: Dreadwing)
Link to the other posts in my Behind the Playlist series
✧ ✧ ✧
I present to you the second playlist I organized in “story order.” I believe an honorable warrior like Dreadwing deserves to have his story told in this way.
Intended overarching themes and/or qualities: Honor, Betrayal, Vengeance Denied
My personal favorite(s) from this playlist: Endless Bonds and Broken Promises, Crystal, Whose Side Are You On, and Lament From The Grave
✧ ✧ ✧
Full song list and explanations under the cut:
Dreadwing by Brian Tyler
Self-explanatory name.
Soldier by Fleurie, Tommee Profitt
First and foremost, Dreadwing saw himself as a solider whose sole purpose was to serve Megatron faithfully.
Endless Bonds and Broken Promises by Krale
This instrumental piece encapsulates the grief Dreadwing may have dealt with after he felt Skyquake’s spark disconnect from his and the resulting determination to confirm what he’d sensed.
This Is a Call by Les Friction
Even though Starscream certainly wasn’t Dreadwing’s favorite for the part he played in his brother’s demise, Dreadwing primarily blamed the Autobots and thought of Skyquake’s death as a call to action.
Crystal by J.T. Peterson
To me, this one is representative of the doubts that began to set in about Megatron and what the Decepticon cause had become under his leadership. Dreadwing began to see how far the faction had drifted from its original vision, especially when Megatron welcomed a “desecrator” like Starscream back into his ranks. Things became crystal clear; Dreadwing came to his senses quickly and was no longer blinded by loyalty or duty.
Lay Your Weapons Down by UNSECRET, Sam Tinnesz
“We're losing all the reasons for our hate / Have we gone too far to find escape? / Lay your weapons down
Lay your weapons down / Lay your weapons down / Don't need to do this / Can't make it through this / Lay your weapons down / We can't fight anymore”
Again, Dreadwing realized how far the Decepticons had strayed from their original course. In his mind, they’d lost any real reason for their hate and were “chasing vapors.” When he willingly betrayed the Decepticons by returning the Forge of Solus Prime, Optimus attempted to appeal to him. Dreadwing chose instead to go his own way and wash his hands of either side before seeking revenge for his brother’s disgrace.
Avenge by Michael Vignola
This song matches the tension in the medbay when Dreadwing was determined to end Starscream’s life.
Whose Side Are You On by Tommee Profitt, Ruelle
“Betrayal burns and there's no hiding / It cuts deeper than a razor blade
There's a war in my head and I don't understand / How we ended up here / There's a tear in my heart where your lies left a mark / And now nothing is clear
Whose side are you on?”
When Dreadwing realized he’d been shot through the spark by Megatron, the shock on his face said it all. I like to imagine that he looked down sadly at the gaping hole in his chest and whispered to Megatron, “Whose side are you on?” as he was leaving to rejoin the Allspark.
Casualty by Hidden Citizens, Tash
“Call me a casualty / The cost of catastrophe / The damage, damage, damage is done / Call me, call me another one”
Lament From The Grave by Tommee Profitt, Stanaj
The Albanian language paired with the background instrumentation is hauntingly beautiful. Also, the name of the song is perfect.
Bury Me Here by Shaheen Fahmy, Epic Music World
I wouldn’t be surprised if Megatron ordered that Dreadwing’s body be dumped in some remote place on earth. There was bound to be at least one ‘Con left who remembered the exact location after the war, and I headcanon that Optimus made sure Dreadwing received a proper Cybertronian burial. Optimus is the sort of bot who would do that as a way of honoring a former enemy he respected.
✧ ✧ ✧
Notes:
This post series is in alphabetical order. Next up are Jack Darby and Knockout.
As I add more songs to the playlist, I’ll update this post.

Can we do some more Dreadwing and Blades? But in the setting of doting decepticon duties? Just something super sweet? Maybe some flirting?
Absolutely?? Been a while since we've delved into that au, I'm surprised some of you guys remember it!
(Au is based off my fic, 'doting decepticon duties', in case anyone is curious. Essentially Dreadwing was revived and brought into the rescue bots team- more details in the fic itself)
"Team meeting, everyone."
"Right away, Chief."
Dreadwing, like a mother duck, guided the rest of the team into the conference room, letting them walk behind him in a neat little row. Dreadwing opened the door to the conference room, keeping it opened for Blades, and gesturing him through.
"You first, Blades."
Dreadwing has done this a million times over, but it STILL made Blades' face erupt in blush. Blurr, from third in line, raised his voice so he could be heard.
"Why does BLADES always go first?!"
"Rules of war states that medical professionals are given priority. Plus, he's a small, and if he goes last, his rotary blades won't tuck in properly."
Blades stuck his glossa out at Blurr before he helped himself to his seat. Once everyone else flooded in, Dreadwing finally shut the door, taking his favorite seat (which Blades ALWAYS seemed to sit right next to). Chief stood on the little podium in the front of the room.
"Everyone settled? Good. Now, we need to discuss team rotations for this week, given that we've had some...issues, apparently."
Blurr sat up a bit, huffing.
"Dreadwing keeps treating me like a sparkling! Literally he asked me if I needed 'upsies' after I tripped yesterday!"
"One, It was my way of asking if you need assistance. Two, you're a lot like my brother, so proud and fickle. Three, you have something on your cheek, come here-"
"STOP DOING THAT!"
Blurr swatted his hands away, knowing he was going to try to use his spit covered finger to wipe a fleck of dirt from his face. Dreadwing got along with the team, but he was...quirky, in a way, with the younger mechs. Blurr was treated much like a younger brother, and he found the affection just insufferable. Chief sighed.
"Fine, fine. We'll get you new partners. Normally I'd say work together, but its tourist week, so I need teams I KNOW can function together. I need an eye on the flood coming in, so Dreadwing, you DO need an extra set of optics. Alongside Blurr, I don't want him unattended."
Blades lifted his hand up meekly.
"I'll...be Dreadwing's buddy."
Chief looked over his list.
"You're usually with Dani."
"Dani can go with Blurr. They get along, and she yells at me listen to her all the time, she's perfect for the job."
Dreadwing put a hand on his chest, trying to convey sincerity.
"Blades, I'd be honored to have you as a partner. Truly."
Blades let out a nervous, high pitched sort of laugh, twiddling with his servos.
"I mean it's not like. That big of a deal r-oh Primus."
Dreadwing held onto one of his hand in his own, sandwitching it between his own claws.
"To me, it is. I understand you and Dani have a tight bond, and for you to offer to separate that for my sake, even temporarily, it warms my spark."
Dreadwing never understood why Blades struggled to meet his optics sometimes. And his face being so flushed- clearly this mech needed to see a medic of some kind. Blurr groaned loudly.
"Fine, whatever, I'll take Dani while these two are canoodling."
Chase leaned in a bit towards Blades, brow raised.
"ARE you two canoodling? Because it COULD technically fall into public indecency-"
Blades damn near jumped, tearing his hands away and holding them up, as if he had been caught.
"W-what? No! None of that at all! Not with me and Dreadwing haha that's just so funny-"
Dreadwing peered past him, scowling.
"If you're going to treat Blades as a buymech, I will NO longer be a part of this meeting, Chase."
Heatwave stepped in. Chase and Dreadwing got along alright, but sometimes Chase would say something that'd get under his hide, even if it was well intended.
"He's not saying that, Dreadwing. He makes EVERYTHING into a rule. Let's just wrap this up, get out of here and into our new patrols, alright?"
Dreadwing nodded, leaning back into his seat.
"Heatwave makes a valid point. Please, let us proceed. Supposing you're comfortable with that, Blades."
Dreadwing got a nod from Blades, and that was all he needed. Dreadwing always did take care of Blades, a little more than the other's. He didn't remind him of his brother, so that wasn't why. He supposed, as he sat there and thought about it, it was because he liked him. It was that simple. He was so sweet, so small, so kind. A bit skittish, but brave when it was demanded of him. Dreadwing...was quite fond of his partner, suffice to say.
------------------------------
"So this is...an Elvis impersonator. He was the singer right? The grateful one?"
"Grateful one?"
"Yes, he says 'thank you very much', right?"
Blades laughed. The delivery from his mouth was so awful, it was cute.
"Yes! Hey, you've been learning!"
Blades was up on a hill with Dreadwing, looking down at the crowd below them. He was watching the crowd circle the stage, just in case anything happened. Though he couldn't focus on the crowd too much, not when Dreadwing was right here with him. Dreadwing nodded, clearly trying not to look too proud.
"I have been doing research. I wanted to surprise you."
"I'm...kinda surprised in general. Just me, and you, listening to the king himself. Well, closest we can get anyway."
"Well you, me, and the thousands under our watch, but yes, suppose this moment is rather special."
Blades couldn't stop screaming internally. This was like a date. WAS this a date? Should he ask? Should he already be knowing-
"Blades?"
"Hmm? Oh, sorry. Sorry, lost in thought. What were saying?”
“I was saying, I enjoy me and you being here. You’ve shown me a LOT since I’ve been on earth. While it is a place that holds not so fond memories...it’s because of bots like you, that I recall that there is some good. It made me think; I should show you my home.”
“Caminus?”
Dreadwing nodded.
“Yes. I moved from that planet for work reasons, but I do recall that it had many sights. It’s a cold planet, and while most Cybertronians would complain about how we lack many resources as them, I feel like you’d appreciate it. Er, I’m sorry, I’m not being too presumptuous.”
Dreadwing turned his gaze from him, scratching the side of his face in a rare moment of bashfulness. Blades nudged him with his shoulder, smiling once he caught his gaze back.
“No no no! I mean, we don’t exactly GET vacations, being rescue bots, but...I’m sure we could sneak off sometime.”
Dreadwing chuckled, reaching his arm around to squeeze his servo.
“You would do something so scandalous, for me?”
He HATED how Dreadwing did that. One second he was so soft and in need of affection and reassurance, then the next he was this big, decepticon baddy that made him feel...things. Things that if it got out, Chase would write him up for...something or another. Blades shrunk a bit, giving off that stupid laugh that Dreadwing always made him make.
“i-i mean, it’s not t-that bad, is it?”
“You ask Chase? It’s horrendous. You ask Blurr, it’s expected. What isn’t expected...is why you do that?”
“Do what?”
“You stammer. You get hot in the face, you avert your gaze from me. Blades, be honest with me. Are you...slight frightened of me, given that I was a decepticon? I will not hold it against you, even Heatwave holds some deep rooted-”
“You listen to me right now, Dreadwing,”
He had his hand on his hip now, with his servo digging into his big bust.
“I'm not scared of you because you’re a decepticon, and it’s not fair that for some reason you don’t think you belong! You’re big, and strong, you’re kind, this team NEEDS you, I need you, I-”
He was silenced when Dreadwing suddenly took a firm hold of his hand. He bowed down low, placing his servo on his forehead. It was a weird, grand display, and it
“Blades?”
“W-what?”
“If you’re telling the truth, and you aren’t afraid of me...then may I have this dance? I know you like this one. It's...uhm...'can't help falling in love', right?"
"You're right. But uhm...I don't even know how to dance to this-"
"I'll teach you. If you'd let me."
Blades took a second to think. Was this him just being the sort of 'older brother' figure...or was this something more? Something special? He should say no. Not get his hopes up.
"Can't teach me from the floor, can you?"
"I suppose not."
Dreadwing chuckled, getting up to his pedes, and holding onto his hand. His other hand wrapped around his wrist, the other hand placed at his hip. His touch was sharp, warm. It was like being protected by a predator.
"Uhm...s-so what do we do?"
"Follow my steps. Hand up, like that, I'll lead. I step back, you step forward. I step to the side...yes, you need to make a box shape. Perfect! My you pick up on this fast, don't you? Clever little copter, you are~"
Blades, a bit flustered by that big, toothy smirk, suddenly found himself burying his face in his shoulder. How he managed to not look at his steps and somehow manage to keep up the pace, was nothing short of a gay miracle.
"I'm...shut up."
He heard that dumb, deep chuckle of Dreadwing's, and he swore it was enough to put him in stasis.
"I think I know what might help you. What if I sang this song for you? I know some of the lyrics. Wise, men, say...only fools, rush in. But I can't help, falling in love with you. Like a river flows, surely to the sea, darling so it goes, some things, were meant to..."
He seemed to stop once Blades finally looked up at him. Blades couldn't stand it. They had been pussy footing around each other all night. So close, yet both so scared to make a move. Well Blades was tired of it. He was gonna do something. He had been pining for this big bot since day one, he was FINALLY going to do something. He lifted his helm up, clearly trying to kiss him. Damn decepticons and their height-
"Woah!"
Dreadwing suddenly scooped him up in his arms, bringing him closer to his face.
"You were standing on your pedes. I...assume this is easier for..."
He knew it. They both did. Blades cupped his face in his hands. So large, so imposing...Blades wanted everything of his.
"For this."
He pulled himself right to his lips, but before he could make contact, their coms suddenly went off.
"Blades, Dreadwing. Shift change, need you guys back at base."
Blurr. Dreadwing cleared his intake as he put Blades down.
"I...don't suppose you'd like to watch cupcake hoarders once we're home?"
It wasn't a magical kiss with some possible fragging, but it was SOMETHING. Blades grinned, grabbing his hand and giving him a light tug.
"Only if you bring snacks! And the rust sticks, the-"
"The blue ones. I remember. You first, I'll follow right behind you."
"PLEASE watch my rear, Dreadwing~"
"Pardon?"
"NOTHING LETS GO-"

This is part three of an ask box fic. For part one or two, click below.
Part 1 Part 2
———————————————————————————————————
There was shocked silence, and then Dani put a hand on his cheek. “So twins are one spark that was split by the Well, and gestalts are many Sparks that were merged by it?”
Blades paused, then nodded. “Yeah.” he whispered.
“So you have brothers then? How many?” Kade asked.
Blades swallowed. “Four.” he wrapped his arms around himself. The others could tell something was wrong, they just didn’t know what. “Hot Spot, Streetwise, Groove, and First Aid.”
“Soooo…..where are they? What happened to them?” Kade asked bluntly.
Blades flinched, looking away. “I don’t know.”
“What?” Dani seemed confused. “Don’t you have a spark bond with them, like Dreadwing was saying?”
“I…do.”
“Then how-“
“Stasis.” Chase cut her off, sounding horrified. “We were in stasis. I do not know much about spark bonds, but I do remember reading that stasis is another way to mute a bond. We were in stasis for thousands of years, and after Cybertron fell, they probably fled far away.”
Blades swallowed. “If they’re even still alive.” he closed his optics. “The stasis, combined with the distance, would have muted the bond enough for the breaking of it not to kill me if they’d died. In stasis, I wouldn’t have even felt it break.” He opened his optics to meet the gazes of his teammates, optics wide and welling with cooling fluid. The forces of his emotions were so strong it was making his frame overheat, which caused his optics to leak the fluid in an attempt to cool him down. “All I know is, I woke up from stasis after the crash and I couldn’t feel them anymore. I felt them before we went into stasis. We were too far to communicate with words, but they sensed how scared I was and they just kept sending me worry and reassurance.” he whimpered. “But when I woke up I didn’t even have that. I don’t know where my brothers are or if they’re even alive. That’s what really hurts.”
There was a long beat of silence, and then Dani was pressing herself to his face to hug him. “Oh, Blades.” she said, sounding so pained and sad.
Blades felt a hand on his back, and looked up to see Dreadwimg staring at him, a knowing look in his optics. “I’m truly sorry, little one. At least when I was separated from my brother, I could use the bond to tell he still lived.”
Blades could only whimper again, and then his team was gathering around him. Dreadwing stepped back to give them space, and he watched at the small, odd little family came together to comfort the distressed flyer.
Blades just shook, forced to finally confront the reality of the situation. He hadn’t let himself think about it, before now. Now really. But he’d finally been forced to and he wished he hadn’t. He just wanted his brothers back. He missed them. He didn’t protest as Boulder gathered him close, and instead curled in to take the comfort his teammates were offering. Eventually, he exhausted himself, and he slipped into a light recharge, dreaming of days long past.
——————————
Another week passed, and they’d finally contacted Optimus. The Prime had in very brief details explained something about a fight for the restoration of Cybertron, before agreeing to come talk with Dreadwing. They had indeed talked when he’d arrived at the island, and the Prime had agreed with Dreadwing’s continued presence here as long as the Burns agreed, and as long as the Seeker informed him before leaving Griffin Rock. Dreadwing had agreed to those terms, and the Prime had taken his leave once more.
Now, the Seeker was finally fully settled in the little bunker. It wasn’t an impressive space, but he wouldn’t be picky. Currently, it was late night, and the humans were asleep and the younglings in recharge. Or at least, most of them were. The little copter was missing. Dreadwing had noticed how he’d seemed more withdrawn ever since he’d confessed to being gestalt. The Seeker couldn’t blame the poor mechling, not really. So, when he realized the little bot was missing, he only sighed and went to search for him.
He found Blades in the courtyard by the firehouse, sitting on the ground and staring at the stars. He sat himself next to the youngling, frowning. “You should be recharging, little one.”
Blades looked at him, then back up. “I can’t. I keep remembering.” he sounded miserable.
Dreadwinf sighed. “Tell me, then. What is is that scares you more: holding on to hope that your brothers still live, or believing in the chance that they have been offlined?”
Blades flinched. “I don’t know. Both hurt.” he whispered. “Dreadwing, the last thing they ever felt from me was fear. What if they thought I was being hunted and killed like the other off world Rescue Bot teams? I asked Optimus when he was here. I know the Rescue Force massacre happened a only about an orn after we went into stasis.”
Dreadwing stilled, considering. That was a very likely scenario. “I do not know what they thought.” he said honestly. “Perhaps they did believe that. Perhaps they held o to hope that you escaped and searched for you. Perhaps they search for you still. Perhaps they were offlined in the War.” he sighed. “I cannot give you the answers, little one. Cybertron’s children are scattered, and I would not know where to tell you to begin searching, even if I knew for certain they were alive.”
Blades whimpered, and Dreadwing wasn’t surprised when the youngling turned to curl into his side. The Seeker draped an arm over the shaking shoulders and quivering rotors, holding the mechling close as he grieved. He wished he could help Blades more, but the truth was that he couldn’t. No one could. Blades would have to decide how to handle this himself.
As the youngling shook against his side, Dreadwing lifted his own gaze to the stars.
Can you see me, Skyquake? Would you approve of this? I would hope so. These mechlings need proper guidance, and the Prime refuses to give it. Starscream can wait. I hope you can forgive me for making you wait for your vengeance.
Blades hiccuped against him, curling even tighter against his side, and Dreadwing gently petted the trembling rotors. Slowly, the smaller flyer relaxed, until he had eventually slipped into recharge while tucked into the Seeker’s side.
Dreadwing stared at him for a long moment, then left out an breath of a chuckle and turned his gaze back up.
Primus, I’ve gone soft.
———————————————————————————————————
Holy crap it’s done. I finished it. I hope my asker is happy. That was a monster and a half. It was fun to write, and I very much enjoyed it, but dear god was it long. My muse kept screaming ideas at me the whole time. Seriously you have no idea.
Also, can you all tell Blades is my favorite? Can you tell? Because he is. I adore him. I hope you don’t mind that I included the Protectobot Blades idea in. I’ve seen it floating around a few other places before now, so the idea isn’t originally mine, but I really like it and I think it fits with his character, so here we are.
With that done, I’m off to finish my next ask box prompt. It should be up in the next couple days. It will be nowhere as long as this one. In fact, most ask box fics will even get two posts long, so don’t get used to this.

Words cannot express how excited I am that you’re continuing the Dreadwing + Rescue Bots fic, I absolutely love the original and I can’t wait to read what comes next. I did have a thought, if Dreadwing’s going to be on Griffin Rock for the foreseeable future, he’ll probably need a new Alt Mode.
Military fighter jet doesn’t exactly scream “rescue vehicle.” I’d recommend an amphibious aircraft, they can takeoff and land on both land and water.
THAT is a very good idea! :D
I was initially just going to have him keep the his alt mode and have the Burnses explain it as “oh, this new bot is the emergency defense robot and his job is to keep Griffin Rock safe from all the really dangerous things. Don’t mind him. We know he’s a military fighter jet but honestly Griffin Rock is a safety hazard so it’s not a big deal.”. Which. Wouldn’t have been as believable.
Granted, he’s still going to have integrated weapons systems, because it’s Dreadwing, but I do agree that a new alt mode is a much better choice. (Also, he keeps his weapons because if Breakdown and Knock Out can store weapons in comparatively normal care modes than Dreadwing can keep his weapons with a more tame plane.)
Also also. I already have the next installment in my drafts. Don’t be surprised if it comes out later. I am on a writing ROLL today and I intend to ride the wave until I inevitably fall asleep. Blades’s brothers won’t be coming into play for a bit, since I want more Dreadwing + Rescue Bots bonding and just more Dreadwing adjusting to non-war life in general, but Blades’s brothers will be a thing in the future. I’m just still deciding if they’re going to be a living thing or not.

You were the one who wrote the dreadwing + rescue bots fic ?!?!?? THANK YOU FOR MY LIFE OH MY WORD it was so so good!!!! ❤️
Yes I was! I’m very glad you liked it! It took me a few days to write just because of how long it ended up being, so I’m rather proud of it. :D
It makes me very happy to know people enjoy my work. It’s part of why I do ask box fics! It gives me a challenge and others get to see ideas they want to read but not wrote about, so it’s a win-win!
The Dreadwing + Rescue Bots fic is one I’m particularly fond of. So much so that I have PLANS for that au. It’s a tag now! I wanna turn it into its own little series! I have ideas for more bonding moments and eventually, REUNION! (Maybe. The part of me that enjoys writing angst is half tempted to have Blade’s brothers be dead, but I don’t know if I want to be that cruel. Probably not tbh, but I’m not at that point in the AU yet.)

Hi again, I just wanted to say that what you wrote for my ask was absolutely amazing, I loved it. Thank you so much.
I absolutely adore Blades and Dreadwing’s bond, and Blades being a Protectobot was something I never knew I wanted. You did an incredible job capturing the emotions of all the characters.
You’re an amazing writer, again, thank you so much.
By the way, about where on the timeline for both shows does the final part take place?
You’re welcome! I’m glad you like it, I had a lot of fun writing to your prompt so thank you for sending it in!
I’ve seen the idea of Blades being a Protectobot in a couple other fics, but I wanted to try my hand at it. I think it’s something that fits in really well with his character! He’s super social and forges bonds much more easily then the other bots, so I like the idea that it’s because he’s spent his whole life bonded to his own brothers. And yeah, I really wanted something where Dreadwing took on a sort of mentor/parental role to the Rescue Bots, because it’s my personal headcanon that Sigma-17 are all younglings, so basically teens at best, and I thought the dynamic would fit. (Also I really, really wanted Blades and Dreadwing to bond and have an understanding of each other because they both have/had brothers. Dreadwing needed a real reason to stay on Griffin Rock, so I thought giving him a stronger bond with one of the bots would be a good reason, and Blades seemed like the best choice for it.)
I wouldn’t mind continuing using this ‘verse at another point in time, but for now there is where I’m leaving it. I’m very glad you enjoyed the story!
In terms of Rescue Bots, this takes place after they meet High Tide, but before Blurr and Salvage come into the picture. I also like to imagine it taking place after Morocco has been taken to the future. The show never specified how long goes between each episode, so this takes place in the undetermined, unspecified amount of time between episodes 19 and 20 of Season 3.
As for Prime, it takes place shortly after episode 5 of season 3, so after the whole battle at Darkmount and destruction of the original base, but before the hunt for the Predacon fossils really kicks into gear.
