I just learned that from 1948 until 1958, La Traviata was always performed at Covent Garden in an English translation that restored the characters' original French names from La dame aux camélias.
So, for example, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf sang the role of Violetta, except she didn't technically appear as Violetta, she appeared as Marguerite, just like Greta Garbo in Hollywood's classic Camille.

There's a parallel in the classical music world, with the post-war Brits and the incomparable German soprano, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf.
She had an amazing combination of both mastery of her instrument, but also intense beauty! She, along with Herbert Von Karajan, were "Re-introduced" to American audiences in the '50s, Schwarzkopf in 1953, with an absolutely stunning concert of lieder, as well as an aria, all with a pianist.
She would eventually wed her producer and mentor, Walter Legge. She would partner musically with the Accompanist of the Ages, Gerald Moore, both as touring partner and recording partner. After Moore retired, her accompanist was pianist Jeffrey Parsons.
I came to know all this because she was one of my "musical obsessive deep dives". Nothing was ever mentioned of her war-time past, other than some stunning recordings dating back as early as 1944. She as well as many other German artists stayed in Germany, where they already had carreers or promising starts.
In order to stay working in Germany, the musicians had to be members of the party, regardless of their sentiments.
In the '90s, when she was very old, there was a particularly acidic article, calling her out as "The Nazi Diva", and essentially dismissing her immense talent and artistry. Schwarzkopf was one of the rare classical vocal artists who could truly inhabit whatever piece she was singing, be it a little Mozart song about violets, or Schubert's macabre masterpiece, The Erlking.
On the opera stage, she was unparalleled in Mozart. and in the works of Richard Strauss. Her first recording of Strauss' "Four Last Songs" (with Otto Ackermann conducting) is one of the recording touchstones that made me want to know more about vocal classical music in general, but the simple piano-accompanied lieder and orchestral song in particular.
All of this to say who or what these people did during WWII should not give free-reign to completely negate their artistic contributions to their chosen means of expression; for Chanel, it was the couture, with Schwarzkopf, it was the interpretation of the world's greatest music in countless concert halls and recital halls.

The German soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf (1915-2006) in Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata at the Theater an der Wien, 1947. Her tenor war Anton Dermota (1910-1989). Although Schwarzkopf got ravishing reviews, she would stop singing Violetta when she attended a performance at the Arena di Verona in 1952. „After having witnessed perfection it doesn’t make sense to continue singing that role.“ The colleague was eight years her junior, her name was: Maria Callas.
