Campaigners have issued a "red alert" over language included in the 2024 Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act that could pave the way toward banning student loan cancellation.
The current draft of the routine bill bars executive branch officials from cancelling or forgiving student loans taken out to pursue flight training or education at the undergraduate level, the Debt Collective warned on Wednesday.
"They're trying to make relief illegal," the group posted on social media.
Buried 1,000 pages in, the language flagged by the Debt Collective comes under the heading, "Prohibition on mass cancellation of eligible undergraduate flight education and training programs loans."
"The secretary, the secretary of the treasury, or the attorney general may not take any action to cancel or forgive the outstanding balances, or portion of balances, on any federal direct unsubsidized Stafford loan, or otherwise modify the terms or conditions of a federal direct unsubsidized Stafford loan, made to an eligible student, except as authorized by an act of Congress," the text reads.
The Debt Collective named Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), and Rep. Rick Larsen (D-Wash.) as particularly responsible for the language.
"Forty-five million student debtors need to see this and get very, very loud," the group said.
While the language only prohibits the executive cancellation of a certain subset of loans, experts and advocates warned lawmakers would not stop there.
"Make no mistake, this is a test flight," author and Debt Collective co-founder Astra Taylor wrote on social media. "If they can make student debt cancellation illegal for some people, they will do it for others. Student debtors and their allies need to stick together and stick up for each other."
Taylor urged anyone concerned about the language to contact the legislators flagged by the Debt Collective.
The Debt Collective called the language a "test run."
"If Congress will stop debt relief for pilots now, they'll do it to nurses tomorrow, teachers the next day, and social workers the day after," the group said.

Man, Dog Survive Ocean Plane Crash, Swim to Shore
The horror that came in seeing a small plane crash into the ocean off California on Sunday soon turned to relief as the pilot and his dog were able to escape the wreckage and swim to shore, where they were met by responding authorities. The pilot had reported engine trouble before his single-engine Piper […]

the hilarious world of Tirooon Jokes, where controllers take silliness and fun to a whole new level! Picture this: when the operator asks a pilot and say "TIRON?" and like clockwork, at least two other people respond in the background like a PARROT BIRD with an enthusiastic "TIROOOOON!!" It doesn't stop there, though.aviation humor It's an ongoing cycle of banter and playful teasing that never fails to bring smiles to our faces.🤣😂😆 Must watch: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2Ht100hWtXTx2YhGYVFHejldUeNIcJ2l https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2Ht100hWtXSFB-KhJwrBI67JMmWDnBM-

Limited Flights From NYC
Limited flights out of New York may clog travel as air traffic controller shortages continue to haunt the FAA. This summer, airlines have had to reduce the number of flights in and out of the three large airports in the New York City area, trying to tackle their rash of cancellations and flight delays. Since the middle of the pandemic, major airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration have…

'Near Collisions' of Commercial Jets Happen All the Ti—FAA
A terrifying new report from the New York Times claims that “near collisions” involving commercial airliners are basically a weekly occurrence in America. The Times report draws on extensive records sourced from the Federal Aviation Administration, as well as a little known NASA database that holds “safety reports” filed by pilots and air traffic controllers. Altogether, the documents reveal that…

Following Southwest’s IT meltdown during the 2022 Christmas season, there have been plenty of people calling for stiffer regulation while others think the government needn’t do anything since Southwest Airlines will “do the right thing” on their own.
News flash - without regulations, customers wouldn’t have any rights to demand compensation for flight cancellations or carrier-induced issues. Private carriage contracts would have (and still do) void as many consumer rights as possible to limit the airline’s liabilities and overall bottom line.
Expecting customers to just “not fly” as some form of boycott is ridiculous.
There is an absolute need to regulate the airlines, especially the ones operating at the budget end who are operating on razor thin margins and eager to cut costs EVERY CHANCE THEY GET.
That doesn’t mean the DOT or the federal government have to puppeteer every action the company takes.
To illustrate how these companies actually operate - read this:
...if you are a corporate executive whose compensation is tied to stock prices and earnings statements released every three months, there are strong incentives to address any immediate problem by essentially adding a bit of duct tape and wire to what you already have, rather than spending a large amount of money — updating software is costly and difficult — to address the root problem.
Then you can cross your fingers and hope that whatever catastrophe may be in the making, it erupts under someone else’s future tenure. Such bets often pay off since, increasingly, the plight of a company’s customers and employees is divorced from the immediate fortunes of its current top executives.
In 2020, Southwest C.E.O. Kelly’s compensation was a record $9.2 million, despite the fact that the company lost more than $3 billion that year because of the pandemic, and the compensation for the median employee fell by $35,000, to about $66,000. (The company said his compensation had been set in place before the pandemic.)
In the years leading up to the pandemic, while the company’s aging scheduling technology groaned, the company spent $8.5 billion of its excess cash on purchasing its own stock — a common practice among airlines which helps increase the value of the stock, the main form of compensation for many executives.
Then, when the pandemic hit, like other airlines, Southwest received billions from the government in grants and low-interest loans. Kelly, an accountant who became the C.E.O. of Southwest in 2004, retired earlier this year, with an estimated net worth in the tens of millions of dollars, so the crisis did indeed occur under someone else’s tenure.

The Moorpark Acorn recently published an article about planning family vacations for a child with asthma. Here are some tips:MedQuip Pediatric NebulizerCheck the weather at the destination. Extreme hot and cold can trigger asthma attacks. Check pollen and mold counts, too.Try to find lodging with non-smoking & pet-free rooms.Bring along allergy relief bedding.Visit the child’s doctor for a check-up before leaving. If flying, pack an asthma plan and all medicines and devices in a carry-on bag. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) allows passengers to carry on medications and respiratory equipment like nebulizers.Bring back-up prescriptions in case the medicine gets lost.
