Notes: This post is created as an archive for myself so I can easily find the fics I love. If you're looking for something new to read feel free to have a look I recommend everything here. I read many different characters/universes, so I'll list them all so you don't waste time looking at something that isn't relevant to you. last movie/show: currently watching "The Gilded Age." I'm glad I caught up in time to watch s2 week to week, as it's been lovely to have something to look forward to (especially on a Sunday evening)

last thing i googled: Balnain, related to but not precisely part of an idea I had for an Outlander fic. I figured "The Woman of Balnain" wasn't a real folk song, and it isn't, but Balnain is a real place (and I've been very near it, turns out! It's near Loch Ness)

current obsession(s): Sara Bareilles. I love her so much always, but am especially reminded since I saw the "Waitress" film last weekend. I'm so glad this show was preserved, and I hope she writes another musical sometime! Also, Connections!

What Should I Write Next?

Thank you to everyone for your very kind words on the conclusion of Don’t Let Me Fall. Since I managed to wrap that story up before the holidays, and since we’re due for the first big snowstorm of the season that will keep me indoors all weekend, I’m trying to decide what to write next.

I am not promising to write the most popular choice, but I am interested to know how readers feel about the following contenders:

Dal Riada (working title) - a WIP that is a retelling of Outlander with Claire falling from the 1860s back to the proto-Gaelic kingdom of Dalriada in 806, where Seumas (Jamie) is the nephew of the king. It also tells the story behind the Woman of Balnain folktale that Claire hears sung in Outlander. Omniscient POV. I’ve written 6 chapters (about 19,000 words) and done a ton of historical research, but I need to revisit the plot and do a significant re-write of what’s there. This is the story I most want to write, but it will take a looong time to do it justice. Likely completion: Summer 2023.

Laredo (working title) - a WIP set in the American southwest in the 1980s. Jamie is a vaquero (Spanish-American cowboy) on his family’s ranch in southern Texas when Dr. Claire Beauchamp’s car breaks down in his one-saloon town. He’s a fugitive from the law, she’s running away from financial and personal ruin, and they come to each other’s aid. Claire POV. This is the story closest to completion. I’ve got 13 chapters (about 37,000 words) written, and there’s just one major plot hole to fill and a lot of polishing before it’s done. Likely completion: January/February 2023.

West End Girl - a WIP set in mid-1980s London during the height of the cocaine/heroin epidemic. Claire is a wealthy Mayfair society girl who witnesses something she shouldn’t. Jamie is the leader of a Docklands street gang called the Clan who protects Claire from Black Jack Randall, her boyfriend’s cousin. It’s a lot darker than my usual stuff. Omniscient POV. This one is about half-written (12,000 words) but still needs some plotting and some rework as well. Likely completion: March 2023.

The Man from Black Water - another wacky fic idea that came to me not long ago. A cross-over between Outlander and the 1980s movie The Man from Snowy River, retold in 1880s Scotland rather than 1880s Australia. The plot would be almost identical to the movie (for those that have seen it) and I can practically recite that movie from memory, so this is a quick hit of feel-good fic. Likely completion: January/February 2023.

While not a cross-over in the strict sense of the meaning, I have appropriated several plot devices from both the current show about immortals, Forever, and another earlier show about an immortal, New Amsterdam (which starred Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) that I actually preferred the back-story for, and pulled them into a purely Outlander character-scape. The Outlander references are a mix of the books and the TV series, so don't jump down my throat on date differences!

Simply put, Jamie Fraser is immortal, and his path is about to cross once again with Claire, and Brianna, the daughter he has never had the chance to meet. Picking up where Dragonfly in Amber left off, what happens if Claire can't go back, but Jamie never dies? (Forever 2014-2015)

AU Outlander fic for Outlander Secret Santa 2017!

You asked for anything and I love AUs, so here goes! This is my first fic for Outlander, so I hope you enjoy it. It will have around 4 parts.

In this story, Claire left Frank when she returned to the present and raised Bree by herself. She finds herself back in Inverness with Bree, now an 11-year-old.

May 1, 1959 // Beltane, Inverness

Fiona is putting the clean clothes away when Roger arrives back to the manse. She closes the drawers quickly and dismisses the rest of the pile so she can be the one to open the door for him. But the Reverend is already there. Blue and red lights flicker across the walls.

Roger is frantic, eyes blood shot and voice hoarse. “I don’t know what happened.” Again he says it, for the tenth time tonight. “ She was there and then she wasn’t”. The Reverend holds him, but can’t comfort him much because the cops are coming, letting themselves in, prodding Roger incessantly.

One sits in the living room with Roger, asking questions and taking notes. Roger is bent on himself, mumbling facts that make no sense. The girl was walking towards the tall stone in the middle. She mentioned feeling dizzy, rounded the stone and screamed something about a buzzing sound. Roger ran towards her, heard the sound, but didn’t find her there. She had vanished. And it is so stupid, so very stupid, but that is what happened and he wished he knew more.

Fiona watches from the kitchen door. The murmurs of the cops in the kitchen talking to Reverend Wakefield are urgent and vicious. They think he might have killed her, Fiona realizes and shudders. Sweet Roger Mackenzie would never do such a thing. But the cops don’t know that. They hint at violence and rape. But how could they think that? Roger is barely 18 and Brianna, well, she is a child! How dare them say such atrocious things? He’s an adult, they threaten, and will be prosecuted as such. The Reverend is shaking his head, looking towards her grandma, his hand rubbing his face absently. Fiona knows by the lost look on Reverend Wakefield’s face that he has never seen Ms. Graham with no answer, no remedy, and no hope.

Mistress Claire comes through the door then. Looks at everybody in the room and the color in her face leaves as she croaks out “where’s Bree?” The Reverend closes the distance between them in a split second, holds her by the shoulders as her legs give way. Claire stops listening to him as he utters the name of the fairy hill. Criagh Na Dun. For Claire, it seems to be a malediction.

Ms. Graham is hugging her, materializing at her side, let the cops be damned. “We will find her.”

Claire turns her head at granny, stricken “As you found me?” Her voice holds no accusation, but granny’s face crumbles, devastated.

“Take me there now,” Claire says, trying to get free of Ms. Graham’s arms.

Granny shakes her head. “We got to think how it is best to go about this,” she cautions to deaf ears. Claire is looking past the cops, past the hunched form of Roger and towards the door. The cops are requesting to take Claire and Roger for questioning. They can’t leave. They have to go with them. No visiting the scene now. Let the cops do their work.

Claire’s eyes wander around the room and Fiona recognizes her stance at once. Lik the panthers at the zoo walking tirelessly round and round, knowing they are trapped, knowing they can’t escape, but still devising just how to do it.

Claire’s face contorts to panic when she realizes the date. She turns to Ms. Graham and pulls her sleeve, whispers urgently to her “It’s Beltane today! I need to get to her…Gods knows where she is…when she is…” her whimper gets muffled by her hands in her mouth. A cop is already pulling her to the door, to the patrol car.

Ms. Graham follows her to the door, “I’ll have everything ready,” she promises, holding both Claire’s hands vehemently. “You can find her.”

Ms. Graham rubs her thumb over Claire’s silver ring as she nods her silent reassurances. Her thin smile faltering, the deep lines of her frown quivering as she nods.

The forlorn look in Claire’s face changes to a resigned acceptance, sending a shiver down Fiona’s spine. She nods to granny slowly. Do it, she pleads wordlessly.

The Reverend, Roger and Claire leave with the cops. And granny swiftly takes to the Reverend’s studio.

She goes through his drawers, pulling out a small box and looking at the old coins inside. 1752, 1756, 1780. No, not that one. She turns Fiona. “Come here, help me.” Fiona obliges, doesn’t know what is going on, but moves quickly to her grandma’s side. She instructs her to find all the coins she can from the year 1760 and older.

Looking at her grandma, an unsettling thought strikes her.

She knows where Brianna is.

And so did Claire.

And it scares the life out of both of them.

“Granny. You know where little Bree is.” Fiona had meant to ask a question but as it left her brain, she knew the answer. Ms. Graham kept at the drawers, pulling things out, wholly ignoring her question. An odd assortment of antiquities. Why was she wasting time on spring cleaning right now?

“Granny”, Fiona started patiently. “If you know where Bree is, why aren’t we telling the police?”

She muttered under her breath, but her granddaughter heard her just fine: “there was nothing they could do then, there is nothing they can do now.” She looked up from the box and stared at the Scottish flag hanging in the wall.

“Remember all those stories about the travelers?” she asked suddenly.

The ancient songs came to her mind immediately. “I am a woman of Balnain, the folk have stolen me over again, the stones seemed to say…” Fiona shivered in the warm room. Is that what it was? Claire was a traveler? And Bree? A sob escaped her mouth.

Granny was looking at her, grief stricken. “I’m no traveler. But I was here when Claire vanished and when she came back.” She held a newspaper clipping with a picture of a scared looking Claire under a headline reading “Kidnapped by the fairies?” Fiona took the newspaper, skimming quickly through the article.

Ms. Graham filled a pouch with coins and items, and walked to the closet in Reverend Wakefield’s office. There hung a beautiful 18th century woman’s dress, which her grandma pulled out reverently. “Only Claire could find Bree. Where she is going we cannot follow, but we can make sure she has everything she needs for her voyage.”

Fiona nodded and she and her grandma worked carefully and hastily.

Who knew where and when little Bree was wandering alone.
