Listen for rumbling bearings in the first three gears of a manual gearbox once they start making a noise they’ll soldier on for years without problems. Now, the Escort Mk1 remains eminently affordable, although some versions are more attainable than others. So it didn’t matter whether your thing was a 1.1-litre runabout or a snarling high-revving twin-cam, there was an Escort for you. Such success was guaranteed by low pricing and a huge range of derivatives thanks to various body styles and a wide range of engines.

Cubic Inch Displacement (CID): The first three numbers, found in the upper left corner, tell you the size of the engine.

The more famous #LotusCortina is the original - 1963’s Mk1, but there were two. Different and worthy in other ways, the Mk2 was more of an in-house creation and meant to be easier to live with for non-racers. It’s overshadowed by the earlier car’s huge competition success but the Mk2 actually sold better. Although a Lotus twin-cam was still at the heart of the car, the Mk2 was mostly the work of Ford of England’s competitions department at Boreham, run by Henry Taylor. The Mk1 was a legend in its own time, dominating British and European touring car racing in 1964 and still being very competitive in 1965 and 1966 - but it wasn’t always so easy to live with as a car you drove every day. The early cars had direct input from Colin Chapman and his team at Lotus, but like Lotuses, they could be fragile. Owners and Dealers alike complained about various breakages, and Ford gradually rationalized the car to make it easier for non-racers to live with - eliminating the alloy pieces (body and mechanical) and eventually the trick rear suspension. With Lotus busy creating a new factory and new cars, it was mostly Boreham’s rally men that altered the Mk1 into a more reliable car, so they also contributed to the Mk1 legend. The Mk2 Cortina, designed under Roy Haynes, was essentially more of the formula that had worked so well for the Mk1, just with a big (and very American) styling update. Led by the success of the Mustang, Ford felt that a more basic version of the car would be easier and cheaper to produce (and could be built at Dagenham/Halewood), but only retain its cred if real performance options were available. Even the green stripe would be optional. Ford dispatched early 2-door shells to Boreham in April of ‘66 to create the package. Led by Taylor (himself a mk1 racer) and engineer Bill Meade, they were to keep the Lotus as close to the Cortina GT as possible but develop a range of performance bits that could make it as wild as the mk1 for those who wanted. Gear box to engine...
Brace yourselves for a bit of a read here,  I’m bracing myself for a bit of a type.  There is no quick way of explaining this.  The ford 4 speed gearboxes of the era come in two basic kinds; the bullet or 2000e gearbox which is a 3 rail box with either forward (earlier) or rear exiting (later) shifter stick.  This was used on the Anglia, Mk1 Cortina, Consul 2000e and so forth including Lotus Cortina.    This is the gearbox I have got to put in the car.   It has the forward exiting stick which won’t cause me handbrake fouling issues in the 100e.   
The next generation 4 speed gearbox was Ford type 3 box.   This is  single rail box with a  rear exit stick.  This was used in the Mk2 Cortina among other things and the 1600 crossflow and gearbox I bought the other day came from a Mk2 Cortina. Mk2 gearbox is no good to me as it has a rear exit stick.
Still with me? The blocks and bell housings bolt patterns are all the same so the Mk2 cortina bell housing will bolt to the Mk1 Cortina gearbox and to the 1600 crossflow.   
The issue is the flywheel...

You’ll notice the spigot bearing in the centre of the flywheel in the end of the crank shaft. It is a needle roller bearing in a 21mm hole, the bearing inside diameter is 15mm to take the 15mm end of the gearbox input shaft.    The early Mk1 gearbox has a 17mm input shaft and the normal crank and flywheel for these is the pre-crossflow engine one which has a much larger recess to take larger bearing outside diameter and the larger 17mm inner diameter for the larger gearbox input shaft, the vast majority of this bearing is really a brass bushing.
So in summary, the gearbox won’t fit the flywheel and there are a lot of articles on the internet about fitting the later gearbox to the earlier engine but removing the larger bearing, machining out the inside to 21mm and then fitting the 15mm inside diameter spigot bearing into it.....
...  and after a lot of searching and sweating....  this!

Bottom left,   application for the Lotus Cortina setup which was the earlier gearbox with the later engine (and a fancy head but don’t worry about that bit).
PHEW!  So that’s solved that problem when we get to it.   I’m now clear exactly how to connect the two together without any fitment issues.

In the 1950s, English Fords had done quite well in the USA, but aside from the Anglia they had been swept aside by the Falcon. But the Falcon didn’t compete directly with the smallest cars (like the Anglia and the VW), and it was a stab at this market which ultimately spawned the landmark Cortina Mk1 - but not in the way you’d think. In 1960, Dearborn and Ford of Germany merged two separate, but similar, small fwd cars into “Project Cardinal” for production in Germany and the USA. When Ford UK’s CEO, Sir Patrick Hennessy, discovered that, he decided to build a rival for Dagenham. “Project Archbishop” became the Cortina Mk1. Detroit ultimately bailed on Cologne and “Cardinal” became the Taunus P4. - “Cardinal” had annoyed Hennessy, who’d been left out - and he was determined to build something that was better and cheaper. In 1959-60, the appeal of front-drive was strong thanks to BMC’s Mini - but Dagenham costed out the Mini and “Cardinal” and decided to make the best use of a conventional car instead. “Archbishop” would also need to be better than the delayed (and less than successful Consul 109E. A year behind “Cardinal,” Hennessy had his team pour on the speed - the Cortina was developed in just 20 months. The style side was led by American Roy Brown, banished to Dagenham for having styled the 1958-59 Edsels. Don Ward and Dennis Roberts, mathematicians as much as body designers, created the rigid unibody. It was similar in size to the 109E but 300 lbs. lighter. To keep costs down, mechanical pieces were developed from other Ford components - Macpherson struts as seen on earlier cars out front, Anglia-derived “Kent” fours under the hood. - Originally the “Consul Cortina,” it went on sale in September 1962 and became one of Dagenham’s most successful (and profitable) cars. Aside from the treasured Lotus version, the most desirable Mk1 was the GT, launched the following spring with a 1498-cc 78 hp “Kent.” This engine made for a sporty drive matched with the Cortina’s 2200-lb. weight.
