Franconia Notch State Park (The Flume Gorge)
I will never forget about my drive on my way to the Flume Gorge. Driving between the white mountains is an experience I will never forget. And of course, I will never forget the panic attack I had while driving without phone service, for one hour, with nothing else than woods. (I get panic attacks because I become easily disoriented) The landscape was amazing, no doubt that New Hampshire is one of the states with the best mountains on the East Coast.

Old Man of the Mountains in Franconia, New Hampshire.
The Old Man of the Mountains was a famous natural rock formation located in Franconia Notch State Park in New Hampshire. It was a distinctive profile of a man’s face, created by a series of granite ledges and boulders. This iconic landmark was a symbol of New Hampshire and appeared on the state’s quarter and license plates.
Sadly, this great stone face collapsed in 2003, due to erosion and weathering. Despite its loss, it remains a significant part of New Hampshire’s history and identity, and efforts were made to commemorate it, including a memorial site and a viewing area at Franconia Notch State Park. #newhampshire #rppc #whitemountains #oldmanofthemountain #Franconia #vintagepostcards

Note
if you do decide to go to new england there are some beautiful glacially carved rocks along hikes in Franconia NH, plus beautiful highway drives. “The flume” gorge is pricey (like 20usd) and usually a lil busy, but gorgeous and worth going once in your life. Personally every year as a kid i went to the hiking trails around “the basin” in Franconia Notch State Park, and iirc its free? either way its gorgeous
i googled some of these locations and they look so pretty <333 i'm not sure yet if i'll be travelling with someone who can drive but i'll keep this in mind for the future

This really hits home. I’ve written before about how dangerous the White Mountains can be. How “altitude queens” accustomed to practically-paved switchback paths starting at 10,000 feet out west can be utterly unprepared for the rocky, rooty, straight-up-the-mountain trails in the Whites, and their wickedly changeable weather. This sign is no joke.

That’s Mount Washington, but the rest aren’t all that much better.
There’s another, more particular, reason why this story hits home. My wife has already finished “the 48″ as they’re called. I’m only three away - Owls Head, Bond, West Bond. My 18-year-old daughter is a different three short - Moosilauke, Madison, Adams. It’s impossible to see this story and not think of her quest to finish before her own 20th birthday. Also, we’ve all climbed Lafayette multiple times, quite possibly by the same route Ms. Sotelo took. This is not far at all from our own experiences.
So, please please please, learn from this tragedy. In her memory. Climbing to mountain peaks, even “low” ones, via established paths might seem like “just a walk” but sometimes it very much is not. Know what’s within your limits, plan carefully, bring gear even for misfortunes you don’t expect, and be ready to bail if things are worse than you thought they would be. You might save a life, and it might even be your own.
