New York breweries win six medals at Great American Beer Festival
Tumblr media
Six New York state breweries, including one in New York City, took home medals at this year’s Great American Beer Festival in Denver last weekend.
Relative Risk Brewing Co. in Penn Yan, Great South Bay Brewery in Bay Shore, Coney Island Brewing Co. in Brooklyn, Industrial Arts Brewing Co. in Beacon, Blue Point Brewing Co. in Patchogue, and New York Beer Project in Lockport all scored wins in the 37th annual edition of the competition, which featured over 9,000 beers from breweries in all 50 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico in 99 categories. This was New York’s best showing at the festival since 2019, when the state’s breweries won seven medals, and a marked improvement over last year’s performance, when the state’s breweries took home just two medals.
Of note, four of the six winning breweries were first-time GABF winners, and one of the winning breweries is barely a year old.
Relative Risk Brewing Co. won a silver in the Fruit Wheat Beer category for their Inclusion Criteria, a Strawberry Rhubarb Wheat beer, among 106 entries in the category. The brewery, which is on 12 acres in the Finger Lakes, just celebrated their first anniversary last weekend as they won their first GABF medal.
Great South Bay Brewery on Long Island took home their seventh GABF medal this year for the Jetty Cream Ale in the Honey Beer category, among 67 entries. Jetty is practically a perennial winner, taking home a silver medal this year, a bronze in 2019, a silver in 2017, and a gold in 2016 in the same category.
Also winning a medal in the Honey Beer category was Coney Island Brewing Co., who won bronze for the Valhallale, a potent 10% foeder-aged honey ale. It’s the first medal for the long-standing Boston Beer-owned brand, which has been brewing beer in its namesake neighborhood since 2015.
Blue Point Brewing Co. in Patchogue was awarded a silver in the Contemporary American-Style Lager category for their Shouganai Japanese Rice Lager, a summer release from their Innovation Series. While it’s their seventh medal overall, this year’s silver marks Blue Point’s first medal in the competition in a decade; they last won for their Rastafarye back in 2013.
Industrial Arts Brewing Co. in Beacon earned a bronze medal for their Week 365 in the American Pilsener category, among 141 entries. The hoppy pilsner, which was released for the brewery’s seventh anniversary, was Industrial Arts’ first since opening in 2016.
Finally, New York Beer Project won silver in the Classic Saison category for their Disco Elephant. The category had 62 entries. It’s the first medal for the brewery that’s been making beer since 2015 in Lockport, about 15 miles northeast of Buffalo.
Across the Hudson in New Jersey, a pair of nearby breweries also won medals: Bolero Snort Brewery in Carlstadt won silver for their Jersey Vice Berliner Weisse, and Kane Brewing Company in Ocean won silver for Sneakbox in the Juicy or Hazy Pale Ale category.
Great American Beer Festival will return next year, October 10th through 12th in Denver.

Brew Review - Sorry Papa by Redlight Redlight and Lincoln's Beard
Brew Review – Sorry Papa by Redlight Redlight and Lincoln’s Beard
“The year was 1792. Brent was gasping the GABF results live with his table, excitedly awaiting what were sure to be very smelly results.” And so begins the Mad Libs-style label art describing a rather common and slightly infuriating story of Redlight Redlight owner Brent Hernandez apparently not winning anything at GABF. It was surely Dave Witte who told me back in 2009 that I had to interview Barnaby Struve for my “Brewtal Truth” beer column in Decibel magazine. As far as I’m concerned, Barnaby’s largely responsible for creating the metal and beer crossover world that exists today via Dark Lord Day and all the amazing metal themed beers he brewed at 3 Floyds. I met Barnaby in person at GABF in Denver a few years later and he was everything I imagined he’d be and more. He was funny, passionate, wise and very giving with his time and knowledge. Plus, he was just a helluva lot of fun to be around. Though we’d only see each other in person every 2-3 years, he’d text me pictures of his art and let me know about his latest endeavors. Our last encounter was at Horse Brass in Portland, where we sat with the Wayfinder crew drinking local lager. Perfect. Wish there were going to be more times like that in the future. Rest in power, good sir.

Fermenter Brewing Company responds after winning their first medal at the Great American Beer Festival
Press Release
HOOD RIVER, Ore. –– Ferment Brewing Co. debuted at this year’s Great American Beer Festival (GABF) competition in a big way. The brewery, which just completed its first year in business in August, walked away from the world’s largest commercial beer competition with a gold medal for its Ferment Pale Ale. Ferment Brewing Co. was recognized in the English-Style or International-Style Pale Ale beer-style category for its Pale Ale, an ale inspired by the brewing traditions of Burton-on-Trent at the turn of the 19th century. Heirloom malted barley and hop varieties come together to produce a result that is crisp and refreshing, featuring a complex depth of character with notes of tea, marmalade, and a hint of rose. “Winning GABF gold for our Pale Ale has been a great honor and thrill for me,” said Dan Peterson, Brewmaster at Ferment Brewing Co. "This beer, in particular, has been at the heart of the Ferment brewing philosophy from the start. It was the first recipe of 35––so far––that we developed and was central to our concept of brewing beer to style, yet giving it a unique personality, all while making it approachable for all.” Added Peterson, "English-style pale ales are a study in balancing subtle, somewhat savory, malt notes and earthy hops with a mildly fruity yeast character. In this case, our Pale Ale uses an all English-sourced grain bill with English hops leading the charge in the kettle; we couldn't be more pleased with the result." The GABF, presented by the Brewers Association, recognizes the most outstanding beers produced in the United States. Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded on Oct. 5 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, in 107 beer categories covering 174 different beer styles. In the 33rd edition of the GABF competition, 9,497 entries were submitted to the general competition, along with 113 Pro-Am and 70 Collaboration entries. The beer was made by 2,295 breweries from across the nation, with entries from all 50 states plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Judging took place over the course of three days, with an international panel of 322 judges from 18 countries. For more information, visit FermentBrewing.com and engage with the company on social media at @FermentBrewing. About Ferment Brewing Co. Ferment Brewing Co. was founded in 2018 as a 20-barrel brewery and tasting room in Hood River, Oregon. Born out of an appreciation for the art of fermentation, the company prides itself in providing a modern brewery and tasting room experience that fuses traditional farmhouse techniques with a forward-thinking scientific approach. Ferment offers a unique family of beers and kombuchas that tap the wild terrain of the Columbia River Gorge for inspiration.

The Great American Beer Festival Crowns the Best Beers of 2021
Tumblr media
The 35th Great American Beer Festival (GABF) returned in person this year for the world’s largest commercial beer competition. Awards were handed out to 265 breweries across the country at a ceremony held in Denver, Colo. as part of the Craft Brewers Conference.
A total of 2,192 breweries from all 50 States (including Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico) entered the competition portion of the festival. Over the course of 17 days, a record 9,680 entries were judged based on a set of criteria. Overall, 290 medals were given out in the gold, silver, and bronze categories.
While the festival portion of the event could not take place due to the pandemic, heightened health and safety precautions were in place during the judging process. The ceremony was also live-streamed for fans who could not attend the awards in person.
“Despite being forced to cancel the festival portion of GABF, our brewing community rallied together to make this year’s GABF competition one for the books — our largest competition judged to date,” competition director Chris Swersey stated in a press release. “Judges continue to be impressed with the quality and innovation of all entries they evaluated […] We look forward to celebrating in person together next year.”
GABF judges selected the standout beers from 97 categories and 175 beer styles. Like last year, the Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale category saw the most entries (427), followed by American-Style India Pale Ale (404).
The additional three most-entered categories include: Fruited American Sour Ale (249), German-Style Wheat Ale (226), and German-Style Pilsner (210).

Day 279: Friday October 6, 2017 - ‘Golden Beer”
My parents flew in this moring for GABF and by nights end, Chad and Amy would join us too.   Took them up into Golden, which excited my Mom - up there we visited a new Brewery that we all agreed was pretty cool, New Terrain. Being First-Friday, I took them back into town for some art walk, beers as Intrepid Sorjourner, and then to eat some tongue tacos at a Mexican joint.  Long rambley, drinkey, night with Mom and Dad - enjoyed getting them Mile High before tomorrow’s big show.  To bad that AC was to sick to join us.

Who’s Representing New York at GABF, The Nation’s Largest Beer Fest
Tumblr media
Kegs in storage, waiting to be tapped at the nation’s largest beer festival (Photo © Brewers Association)
The kegs have shipped, and they’re ready to tap. Starting Thursday, brewers from across the country will descend upon Denver, Colorado for the Great American Beer Festival, the nation’s largest celebration of American beer. The event has been held since 1982, and has grown over the years from a small hotel ballroom to a convention center floor with 584,000 square feet of space – the size of ten football fields. GABF is expected to welcome 62,000 attendees, over 800 breweries, and 4,000 different beers poured over four sessions on three days. And it’s also a competition – one of the most prestigious in the world, with over 8,000 beers vying for over 300 medals in 102 different categories. Quite simply, GABF is a big deal.
This year, New York will be represented at the festival by 15 breweries from across the state, including 4 based in New York City. Big Alice Brewing Company, Brooklyn Brewery, Gun Hill Brewing Co., and Sixpoint Brewery will represent the city. It’s a repeat performance for all four breweries, who each poured at last year’s festival. Sixpoint and Brooklyn continue their long-running appearances, with Brooklyn flexing their muscle with a larger “end cap” booth for the second year in a row.
Representation from New York at GABF isn’t necessarily an indication of the strength of its beer scene. The 15 breweries pouring from New York represent less than 4% of the total breweries in the state, according to the Brewers Association’s 2018 count. Colorado, on the other hand, has 160 breweries pouring at the festival. For a handful of New York brewers who choose to pour, GABF can be a great marketing tool in putting a brewery “on the map” for future beer tourists. And since the festival is also one of the most well-respected beer competitions, the prospect of winning a medal they can brag about for years to come is a good reason to make the trek to Denver, too, but it’s worth noting that breweries don’t have to pour at the festival to enter beers in competition. Recent winners in GABF competition from New York include Captain Lawrence, Gun Hill, and Prison City.
Some of New York’s brewers will still get exposure at the festival thanks to the New York State Brewers Association. They’ll have a booth in the highly-underrated “Protect Craft Guilds” Pavilion at the festival, where they will feature beers from small breweries in the state that don’t have their own booth.
Here’s a complete list of the breweries from New York represented at GABF this year, with breweries represented at the New York State Brewers Association booth in Italics:
Barrage Brewing (Farmingdale)
Big Alice Brewing Company (Long Island City)
Binghamton Brewing Company (Johnson City)
Bolton Landing Brewing Co. (Bolton Landing)
Brooklyn Brewery (Brooklyn)
Captain Lawrence Brewing Company (Elmsford)
Great South Bay Brewery (Bay Shore)
Gun Hill Brewing Company (Bronx)
Hudson Valley Brewery (Beacon)
Industrial Arts Brewing (Garnerville)
Ithaca Beer Company (Ithaca)
K2 Brothers Brewing (Rochester)
King’s Court Brewing Company (Poughkeepsie)
ONCO Fermentations (Tully)
Prison City Brewing (Auburn)
Saranac Brewery (Utica)
Sing Sing Kill Brewery (Ossining)
Sixpoint Brewery (Brooklyn)
Spider Bite Brewing Co. (Holbrook)
Steuben Brewing Company (Hammondsport)
Strong Rope Brewery (Brooklyn)
Two Goats Brewing (Burdett)
We’ll be covering the festival all this weekend on social media, so follow us on Twitter and Instagram.

The Inaugural Half Acre Far & Away Invitational
a creative gathering at Harris Theater
Up to this point the only notable beer party over this way is the annual Harvest HopDown Fest at The Plaza on Millennium Park. It’s an October gathering where Park Grill’s PR staff coordinates distributors to come pour packaged mainline offerings from popular regional breweries. It’s a decent party and certainly better than having no bier fest at all on Michigan Avenue.
What we saw on the rooftop of Harris Theater at that same park was a completely different animal. The mighty Half Acre Beer Company invited 61 of their favorite breweries that never make it to our corner of the earth. The lineup was so stacked that you could walk right up to 2018 GABF IPA winners Alvarado Street and Green Cheek with no wait.
Wiseacre, Memphis, TN*
Saturday 10.13.18*
FFF, Munster, IN*
Perennial, STL*
My favorite beer of the fest was probably the understated brilliance of Jester King & Scratch’s Abscission (spontaneously fermented ale with spicebush, grapevine + juniper).
It was less about rankings and more about appreciating what releases your favorite beers snobs are hysterical about. Beers that up to this point many of us only get to read about. Nothing will top seeing the founders of Dark Matter Coffee and Half Acre joyously sharing pours and thanking us for attending. Half Acre’s Benthic three ways (espresso, iced coffee, stout) was hard to deny and had us thinking how lucky we are to live in the same town as those two crews.
This was like attending a beer event for the first time. There were 16 brewers we legit had never even heard of. The sentiment was felt among teams that made the trip to pour their own beers like Pennington, New Jersey’s Referend Bier Blendery. They admitted not being familiar with all the breweries in attendance.
We never party this hard in The Loop. Finally a festival that the bottle share crowd can appreciate. The good folks at Half Acre have set the bar for what a modern beer gathering should feel like.

Three Weavers Brewing Company releases Blood Junkie Imperial Red Ale.
Tumblr media
Press Release
Inglewood, Calif. ... Three Weavers Brewing Company announces the return of Blood Junkie Imperial Red Ale (8.7% ABV). The seasonal, ruby-hued brew, which perfectly balances hop aroma, bitterness and malty sweetness, will be released on draft and in 16 oz. cans on Sept. 23 in their Inglewood taproom, with limited distribution to follow. “Our beloved imperial red is a modern West Coast beer through and through,” said Three Weavers’ Brewmaster, Alexandra Nowell. “It’s super hoppy with a dry finish. The aroma is bright and heavy with grapefruit, berry and fruity crystal malts leading the charge, and then lingering with notes of bright pine resin. The bitterness is assertive, but very well balanced and the color is a deep red.” Blood Junkie Imperial Red Ale is built on a grain base of two-row barley and a healthy dose of British crystal malts for color and body. It’s dry-hopped to the hilt with a combination of Mosaic, Simcoe, Ekuanot and Chinook hops, giving it a bright, tropical hop character and a distinctly West Coast spin on the imperial red style. The beer earned a gold medal at the 2016 World Beer Cup. The animus for Blood Junkie came about in 2014 when the Three Weavers crew and their neighbors at the time, Prosthetic Records, discovered a mutual love of both metal and beer. This beer demands a soundtrack, and Three Weavers’ resident metalhead, Chris Gonzales, advises pairing the heavily hopped imperial red with the following songs: Behemoth’s “Alas, Lord is Upon Me,” Animosity’s “You Can’t Win” and Meshuggah’s “Do Not Look Down.” The distinct can art was created by London-based artist Dan Mumford. Look for Blood Junkie Imperial Red Ale at Three Weavers’ Inglewood taproom starting Sept. 23, with availability at select Northern California craft beer sellers to follow.
About Three Weavers

Is Brut IPA Over Already?
On May 1, 2019, MillerCoors announced the launch of Hoppin’ Bubbly, a brut IPA co-branded as a Miller High Life and Terrapin Beer Co. collaboration. It’s a mashup of the light-and-bubbly “Champagne of beers,” Miller High Life, and a hop-forward Rye Pale Ale from Terrapin, another MillerCoors-owned brand.
The timing struck some in the beer community as ironic. Two weeks earlier, in mid-April, beer blogger and author Jeff Alworth published a blog post questioning the brut IPA trend. An accompanying Twitter poll yielded bleak results: Less than a quarter of respondents believed brut IPA was “still a thing.”
(In preparation for this story, I mimicked his survey on May 5, 2019, and received similar results.)
For brewers and fans, this author included, brut IPAs are definitely “a thing,” evidenced by dozens of releases, from small outfits like Five Boroughs Brewing Co. in Brooklyn; to major craft beer brands like New Belgium and Sierra Nevada; and now, one of the world’s largest brewers, MillerCoors. They are dry, effervescent, aromatic alternatives to ubiquitous juicy or hazy IPAs.
“Brut IPAs are attracting the more savvy craft beer drinker. People who are avid IPA drinkers will turn to bruts to satisfy the need for more clean and crisp hop flavors,” Matt Johnson, brewmaster of brewery operations at Karl Strauss Brewing, says.
Brut IPA emulates Champagne with its dry flavor, effervescence, and clarity. Photo credit: Barstow American Brewery / Instagram.com
If you’d have asked a brewer or beer geek about brut IPA a year and a half ago, you’d have gotten blank stares. Virtually nonexistent until the end of 2017, the term “brut IPA” began charting on Google Trends in May 2018. Six months earlier, in November 2017, San Francisco’s Social Kitchen and Brewery released what is widely considered the first brut IPA, Hop Champagne Extra Brut IPA. Brewer Kim Sturdavant coined the term after experimenting with an amylase enzyme typically used to lighten up the mouthfeel of heavier beers, like imperial stouts.
“I had it in my head: What would happen if I used this [enzyme] to make a basically sparkling hop beverage with no sweetness in it?” he told SFGATE in March 2018.
At least 10 more brut IPAs had launched in California at that time, from such breweries as Cellarmaker in San Francisco, Temescal in Oakland, and Eagle Rock Brewing in Los Angeles. By May 2018, brut IPAs popped up in Colorado, Illinois, and New Hampshire.
And by June 2018, trend pieces from drinks publications including this one touted brut IPAs as a trend. But brut IPAs persisted, reaching such far-flung locales like Sao Paulo, Brazil, Seoul, South Korea, and Moscow, Russia. In the span of six months, Sturdavant’s “hop Champagne” experiment had become a global trend.

New Belgium announced its brut IPA in December 2018, in time for New Year’s Eve celebrations. Sierra Nevada’s Brut IPA hit store shelves in January 2019. That month, Google searches for “brut IPA” peaked.
After that, internet interest plummeted. The search term “brut IPA” is less than one-third as popular as it was at its height.
(Specific figures on brut IPA sales volume are difficult to attain; since many brut IPAs are scanned under other codes, such as “seasonal,” volume data is minimal, Bart Watson, chief economist of the Brewers Association, tells VinePair.)
Some industry members believe brut IPA’s downfall is due to its inconsistent iterations. “I like the idea of brut IPA, but there wasn’t enough of a consensus of what they were supposed to be,” Dan Lamonaca, owner of Beer Karma, a beer retail store in Brooklyn, tells VinePair in an email. “The beers I tried were all over the map.”
After receiving samples of a brut IPA that contained “the same adjuncts … as milkshake IPAs,” with additions of fruit and vanilla, he says, “I’m ready to give up on the style.”
Jeff O’Neil, owner of Garnerville, N.Y.’s Industrial Arts Brewing, believes brut IPA serves a purpose as both a “backlash” to the cloying sweetness of New England-style IPAs, as well as a “rebrand” of hoppy, overly bitter West Coast IPAs.
“The hop varieties that we have at our disposal today are so much more varied and interesting (and expensive) than a decade ago,” O’Neil writes VinePair in an email. “In my opinion it has become something of a waste to hide them behind a ton of bitterness.”
If NEIPAs are too sweet, and West Coast IPAs too bitter, then brut IPA, like Goldilocks’ third bowl of porridge, is just right.
“[G]ood examples of [brut IPAs] are exceedingly easy to drink in quantity and are often relatively light and bright, which definitely satisfies a subset of our audience in a way that a sweet, juicy beer can’t,” O’Neil says.
“When you approach a good brut IPA, the flavor and aroma jump right out at you [with] tons of character, but then it finishes dry and refreshing with very little, if any, lingering bitterness,” Dave Thibodeau, co-founder of Ska Brewing in Durango, Colo., says.
“Our target demographic would be people like us,” he says, those who “love all things hops but at times don’t want to be so overwhelmed with a beer that they can’t drink another of.”

At Industrial Arts, Cut Once, a brut IPA O’Neil describes as “an evolution” of Week 104, which VinePair ranked among the best brut IPAs last year, is “rolling out occasionally … but it hasn’t sold or rated at anything close to what a hazy [IPA] would,” he says.
In June, Cut Once will be released alongside Measure Twice, a double-dry-hopped hazy double IPA. “If this says anything, we’re brewing twice as much of the DIPA [as] the brut,” O’Neil says.
Tellingly, in April 2019, the Brewers Association released its annual beer style guidelines, listing six different types of IPAs. Brut IPA is not one of them. By comparison, at the 2018 Great American Beer Festival (GABF), the BA received more than 400 entries in the “juicy or hazy IPA” category, surpassing any other category.
It turns out brewers and other professional beer geeks love brut IPAs, but the rest of the country’s craft beer drinkers still like their IPAs sweet and boozy.
In the wine world, professionals poo-poo sweet yet exceedingly popular wines like Moscato and Lambrusco and favor dry varieties like certain Cabernet Sauvignons. But the truth is, most Americans like sugary drinks.
Perhaps those of us who see brut IPAs as the answer to our parched palates’ thirst for balance are discovering little more than our own elitism.
“Seems to have ‘niche style’ written all over it,” Alworth tells VinePair in an email. “But we’ll see!”

You know when you’re in Chicago you HAVE to stop by one of the breweries who started it all; hence why eatingwithlittlemariii and I went to Goose Island Brewing Company?!
This was the first brewery stop we did while we were in Chicago and I have to say, it kind of ruined it for the rest of them, because with the tour itself and the beer that was available in the taproom, the bar (no pun intended) was set REALLY high.
From their website: Our History: Our famous beer began with a trip across Europe, when Goose Island founder (and unabashed beer lover) John Hall took a tour across the continent. Pint by pint, he savored the styles and selections of brews in every region, and thought to himself, “America deserves some damn fine beer like this, too.” Craft brewing wasn’t widely known at the time, but upon return from his European sojourn, John set out to change all that. He settled down in his hometown of Chicago—a city perfect for craft beer, with rapidly evolving tastes and the largest system of fresh water on the planet. And then he got to brewing. First he made some stellar beer. Then he invited his consumers in to watch his process at the brewery, bringing them behind the scenes every step of the way. The result was a new fascination with craft brewing, and beer that not only catered to people’s tastes, but challenged them as well. That was back in 1988, and we haven’t slowed down since. By 1995, John’s beer had become so popular that he decided to open a larger brewery, along with a bottling plant to keep up with demand. 1999 brought even more growth, along with an additional brewpub, and today, what was once one man’s pint-filled dream has become the Goose Island empire you know and love.
*Fun fact: The day they opened their doors was on a Friday the 13th in the year 1988.
Our Brewery: Our brewery was built in 1995 and has more than doubled in size since originally built. We bring you our tasty pints using 32 fermenters, over 15 different yeasts, state-of-the-art filters, centrifuges and a 50 barrel JV Northwest 5 vessel system that brews 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It turns out that making awesome brews is quite the science. Luckily our brewery facilities have all the equipment necessary to deliver results. Our packaging line alone bottles 500 cases an hour, with our keg line at a rate of 50 kegs every 60 minutes. Once the beer is complete, we store it at a crisp 38 degrees until shipping. In other words, we don’t mess around when it comes to filling the Goose Island demand. We even have separate rooms to house small batch innovation programs and yeast propagation units, and our barrel-aged beers have their own dedicated stockroom AND 143,000 square foot barrel warehouse. It’s only the very best equipment for our beer—and we invite you to learn more.
Our Hops: Tucked away in a secluded valley in Northern Idaho is Elk Mountain Farms – the place where Goose Island hops are grown and harvested. Head Farmer Ed Atkins shares the same passion and commitment to great beer as our brewers, and together they’ve worked to grow the farm from a 70-acre operation to a 1700-acre hop heaven. Here, over 50 different types of hops, including Goose Island favorites like Saaz, Amarillo and Cascade are cultivated along with numerous experimental varieties that could one day push the boundaries of beer for drinkers and brewers alike. Elk Mountain is more than just soil and plant life; it’s a laboratory, a studio, a blank canvas on which to paint the future of Goose Island beer.
Our Barrels: In 1992, Goose Island gave the beer industry a new reason to belly up to the bar: bourbon-aged beer. We pioneered the process, and it begins with first-use bourbon barrels. Our brewers only choose those that have had held sweet, sweet whiskey in their bellies for an average of 8 years, then they age our beer inside for 8-12 months. This process takes place in a non-climate controlled space, allowing exposure to the extreme heat and cold of Chicago’s ecosystem, which contracts and expands the wood, pulling the barrel’s whiskey character into our brew. Each barrel is used only once, ensuring the best quality taste in every pint. That first barrel-aging process yielded our ever-tasty Bourbon County Stout back in 2004. Three years later, we decided it was time to expand our barrel-aging program again. But this time our brewers brought wine barrels into the picture. They started with beer that had undergone primary fermentation in stainless steel casks, then transferred it to wine barrels, soaked with flavor. Next came fresh fruit and wild yeasts, and the beginning of a secondary fermentation inside the barrel. Aging went on for 9-18 months, creating beer with unprecedented depth of character, increased acidity and a light essence of fruit without too much sweetness. The variety of wine barrels we use now yield some of our most unique brews, including Sofie, Juliet, Lolita, Madame Rose, Gillian and Halia.
*Fun Fact: Their Bourbon county stout was submitted at the Great American Beer Festival when they first started brewing it and it was disqualified because they didn’t have a category for the percentage of alcohol in that beer (Usually the category topped off at 10% ABV). So basically, Goose Island started the barrel aged beer category at the GABF the next year.
Here are the explanations from the brewery:
Classics:
Honkers Ale [English Style Bitter (4.3% ABV/ 30 IBU)]: Inspired by visits to English country pubs, Honker’s Ale combines a spicy hop aroma with a rich malt middle to create a perfectly balanced beer. Immensely drinkable, Honker’s Ale is not only a beer drinkers can trust but one they’ll look forward to.
Limited Releases:
Cooper Project No. 3 [Barrel Aged Porter (8.3% ABV/ (N/A) IBU)]: The Cooper Project is a rotating series of new recipes that highlight Goose Island’s expertise in bourbon barrel-aging. The third release of 2017, this Barrel-Aged Porter, starts life as a rich porter brewed with chocolate maltsand spices that is then barrel-aged for 3 months in fresh bourbon barrels.
Juicy Double [Double IPA (8.3% ABV/ 70 IBU)]: Juicy Double is a crisp Double India Pale Ale brewed with Orange Juice for a refreshing citrus finish.  Brewed with 7 hop varieties, this Imperial India Pale Ale weighs in at 8.3% ABV with an IBU of 70.  The bold hop character is nicely balanced with the citrus from the orange juice.
Keller Marzen [German Lager (6.3% ABV/ (NA) IBU)]: Our brewers traveled overseas to brew this limited release beer with our friends at Spaten Brauerei, the oldest brewery in Munich. It pays tribute to time honored Bavarian brewing traditions of brewing a stronger beer in March, lagering for many months and tapping the unfiltered beer at the end of the summer for Oktoberfest. The result is a smooth, malty and unfiltered golden lager with light, bready sweetness and a delicate German hop character.
Islay Scotch Barrel Stout [Imperial Stout (13.3% ABV/ (NA) IBU)]: Imperial stout aged in Ardbeg Scotch barrels for 15 months. Featured at the Festival of Barrel Aged Beers this weekend and here only (was there the weekend of Nov 9-11). Dense black with a viscous body and smoke and peat notes.
Flight Of V Pale Ale: No Description Available.
Holiday Ales:
Noel [Belgian Style Dark Ale (9.5% ABV/ 15 IBU)]: In Belgium, Noël beers were released at the end of the year as a special, limited release to thank loyal brewery customers for their support throughout the year. Goose Island Noël is an un-spiced Belgian-style, Dark Ale with balanced notes of caramelized sugar, toasted bread, black cherry, and dried apricot all in a warm, deep-mahogany body. This beer was brewed to celebrate the past year and toast the new year to come. From our brewers to you and yours, cheers and happy holidays.
Vintage Ales:
Sofie [Belgian Style Farmhouse Ale (6.5% ABV/ 20 IBU)]: Our sparkling Belgian Style Farmhouse Ale is wine barrel-aged with an abundance of hand-zested orange peel. Spicy white pepper notes contrast the citrus tartness. The light, refreshing, creamy vanilla finish will excite those fond of Champagne. Originally brewed by Belgian farmers to attract the best farm hands, we were inspired to brew an exceptional ale as inviting as the original Belgian Farmhouse ales. Light and effervescent, we named it for our founder’s granddaughter Sofie.
Juliet [Belgian Style Wild Ale (8.0% ABV/ 15 IBU)]: A tart, jammy, complex ale fermented with wild yeast and aged in wine barrels with fresh blackberries, with notes of wood, tannin, and spice. Inspired by sour beers from the Cantillon Brewery in Belgium, Juliet is a tart, jammy, complex ale fermented with wild yeast and aged in wine barrels with fifty pounds of fresh locally sourced blackberries, with notes of wood, tannin, and spice.
Bourbon County:
Bourbon County Wheat Wine [Wheat Wine (15% ABV/ (NA) IBU)]: Brewed in honor of the 1000th batch at our original Clybourn brewpub. A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with thick foam the color of a bourbon barrel. The nose is an intense mix of charred oak, chocolate, vanilla, caramel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer.
Here’s what I thought:
Honkers Ale: This one is an English Bitter. It has flowery/citrusy scents. Very aromatic. Tasted like flowers as well. Light. Crisp & refreshing.
Cooper Project No. 3: This one smells like a straight cask which was followed by a bit of chocolatey scents. It was actually quite light & crisp. It completely envelopes your palette.
Juicy Double: This one actually had quite the light scent. Not too hoppy at all. And the tastes were extremely light, smooth and crisp. It was not overbearing in the least.
Keller Marzen: Malty scents and it tasted malty as well. It had slight citrus tastes but was extremely crisp.
Islay Scotch Barrel Stout: You can smell the cask that the beer has been fermenting in. You can legit get light headed and feel tipsy by just smelling it. Has a smoky aftertaste, kind of like the whisky (barrel) the beer was aging in. Delicious, smooth, light & milky (the mouthfeel).
Flight Of V Pale Ale: Smells super hoppy; but you can smell the malts as well with a tinge of citrus. The taste though is not as hoppy as it smells. Crisp. Refreshing.
Noel: Had a bready/malty taste with a bit of a Belgian beer, just not as spiced. It was actually quite crisp for it’s colour.
Sofie: This one was actually put in wine barrels instead of whiskey barrels. Scents of a Belgian beer; crisp, light and refreshing. It’s kind of like a light Belgian. You get different tastes with each sip you take. And there were hints of citrus in the aftertaste as well.
Juliet: This one had fruity, citrusy scents. Kind of like blackberries. But when you sip it back, this one smacks you in the mouth. But it was also, crisp, light, delicious & tart.
Bourbon County Wheat Wine: Has aromas like it was taken straight out of a cask. You can taste & smell the bourbon barrel that this beer was sitting in. Light, a bit malty with some caramel notes as well.
So all in all with the ambiance of the brewery, the rich history and the beers we were served I would give Goose Island Brewing Company 5 out of 5 piggys!
They give dope tours with a flight of tastings [(3) per tour] for only $12!
