Hey Jealously

Reader doesn’t like when the vending machine guy flirts with Melissa.

This is a quick drabble, trying to get my brain going again. Feel free to send requests!

“I’m just saying if they cast a man in that role the character wouldn’t have gotten so much hate.”

“It’s okay, dude.” You laugh patting Jacob’s shoulder, sitting with him and Janine so Mel and Barb can have their time during lunch.

The relationship with the devastatingly gorgeous redhead was still new, but you had the feeling others were catching on. Neither you or Melissa tried to hide anything, but you both toned down the PDA when at work because of the setting itself.

“What’s the kid whining about now?” Melissa asks shifting in her seat, glasses on the bridge of her nose.

Smiling at your girlfriend you open your mouth to explain, only to stop short when vending machine guy comes in.

“How are my favorite teachers doin?” He asks with a smile on his stupidly huge Neanderthal face. Okay, maybe that was harsh, but you didn’t like how he flirted with Melissa.

Last Thursday he brought her a whole case of her favorite iced tea. The week before that he tried talking her into going out with him which she politely declined, and now he looks at Melissa like an animal hunting its prey.

“Good now that we got Gushers back in the machine,” Leave it to Janine’s sunny disposition to ease the tension you’re feeling. You watch closely as Gary eyes your lady, and it makes you see red. You hadn’t felt the need to say anything to Melissa about the vending machine guy, she never flirted back but you couldn’t help the pang of jealousy you felt.

“Hey Philly 11, you put any thought into my offer?” He grins not having a clue as to what’s going on.

The look on your face must worry Janine and Jacob, because Jacob stands up and leaves the table going to the sink.

“Nah, Gary. I got other stuff going on.” A good response, you think. She’s still facing your table and hasn’t looked up from her phone.

“If you change your mind I-“

“She said she’s got other stuff going on.” You huff firmly.

Barb is the first to look at you, missing the smirk on her friends face. Gary nods cowering away with his cart, not to be seen again until next week.

Feeling your skin flush you duck your head meeting Melissa’s eyes. As the redhead stands up you sit back in your chair leaning into her when she wraps her arms around your shoulders from behind kissing your cheek. “Jealous there, hon?”

Janine is pouting at the two of you, looking back and forth between your table and Barb like a deer in the headlights.

Barb laughs shaking her head with a knowing smile looking at you. “Ava owes me a significant amount of money. Good job, sweetheart.”

She hadn’t worked there very long only a month or so

Everyone loved Lydia the third grade teacher who almost bested Melissa Schemmenti.. almost but it was safe to say she made everyone swoon. Jealousy was an ugly accessory that both Melissa and Gary seemed to wear the couple both eyeing the new teacher.

Am I surprised to see you here with Lydia? Melissa thought as she entered the break room to see Gary and the woman. She’s oh so nice and easier to love than I the redhead wanted to slap her boyfriend for how easily his attention was given. As he eyed Lydia making her coffee neither noticing the redhead enter “how does Mel like her coffee?” She asked gently grabbing another cup down. “She should be in soon so I want it to be ready when she’s here” Melissa smiled at your kindness “im not sure” Gary scratched his head before refilling the vending machine.

But no, I won’t hold it against her

My baby, my baby the first person to love since she divorced Joe swooning over another woman so blatantly. Lydia always shrugged him off with a polite smile though you could see it in her eyes she hated it all the attention from him. “Don’t you want me anymore?” Melissa asked him once they were alone he avoided eye contact and that told her everything she needed to hear.

Her arms are warm the redhead smiled to herself as she relaxed in Lydia’s embrace both women standing alone in the empty classroom. Melissa let herself enjoy this moment of peace with her friend that she had just vented about Gary to.

Her legs are wide and so’s her smile even Barbara would be lying if she said she didn’t have a little bit of a girl crush on the woman. Lydia stood beside Melissa at the counter as she made them both another cup of coffee, she was the woman the redhead always wished to be.

Melissa hadn’t always been the badass Italian everyone knew it had taken years to grow her skin yet Lydia did it so effortlessly. Always talking back to the rude parents with ease and the sleezeball fathers constantly trying to start an affair. She had a confidence that captivated people that drew them into her so easily.

But no, I won’t hold it against her

Melissa was so used to having someone to smother to care for that once Gary drifted away she felt almost hollow. Though Lydia always promised there wasn’t anything going on and that the man loved her even if it burned to admit. Lydia loved Melissa but she wasn’t the type to break a relationship over such feelings so she stayed quiet and supportive.

Now wasn’t the time to jump into anything new for Lydia she was doing just fine being friends.

Her lips are cold it was now winter as Lydia walked into the break room in her layers lips having turned blue almost purple as she grabbed her mug. Melissa couldn’t stop staring at her smile the skin on her lips had begun to split slightly.

He talks too tired

To say goodbye

Gary would normally be almost bouncing off the walls just being near Melissa but now he seemed almost drained as he barely smiled at the woman. Barbara caught on she was a lot of things but she wasn’t stupid nobody could miss how he looked at you.

So take the time to reel me in and wash me out

Against her

Melissa knew when to call it quits Lydia had won a competition she didn’t know she was in and the redhead couldn’t be mad. The woman had done nothing she knew it all from her first marriage but watching as the pair quickly distanced themselves it broke her.

Lydia left for a while and nobody knew why she had just vanished for a week having Ava surprisingly cover her classes. It only lead Melissa to that sinking feeling that Gary and Lydia were going behind her back.

“Ms. Benson?” The young receptionist spoke softly as she entered the breakroom “yes dear?” Lydia smiled “there’s a woman here she said she’s your sister? She at the front office”. The woman nodded getting up from her seat unaware of everyone’s curious gaze.

You seemed to know all about them yet they knew nothing about you.

Melissa couldn’t believe Gary would even propose to Lydia without breaking up with her first she was heartbroken. Someone who became one of her closest friends doing that behind her back? She decided enough was enough.

Melissa had cornered both you and Gary in your classroom yelling about an affair that didn’t exist, slut shaming and name calling. She threw pens and pulled her hair, Gary didn’t know what to do and neither did you Melissa had herself convinced she didn’t care.

Angrily you stomped to your desk taking the small box out of the top drawer throwing it to Gary “i’m done” you laughed grabbing your bag and leaving. Only then did Melissa stop “Lydia was helping me to propose” Gary swallowed unable to meet Melissa’s eyes.

The next time Melissa saw Lydia was at the woman’s front door, the brunette sat on her doorstep tear stained and puffing a cigarette. The redhead felt guilty no she was guilty and she felt horrible to just assume such things and to act the way she did.

A little boy ran around the front lawn happily before another slightly older brunette woman walked out from behind Lydia. Melissa stepped out of her car warily as she made her way to the small group the other woman quick to meet the brunette ready to fight.

“Olivia it’s just Melissa” you waved off with a sigh Melissa? You never said her full name “what do you want?” You looked tired. “I’m sorry, I should’ve listened to you” Melissa played with the hem of her shirt “you’re sorry? Okay” you shrugged.

“I think it’s best if you leave” Olivia cleared her throat as she raised an eyebrow to Melissa’s truck in the driveway “she doesn’t need this at the moment”

Melissa lost Gary

Now she was losing you too

Abbott Elementary 2.14 "Valentine's Day" Thoughts (semi-inspired by @cdyssey's post)

Janine: "It's like, I don't remember what happened on the last season of Stranger Things--that was ten years ago." Burn.

It's interesting to me that Janine's projecting all this neediness from her sister ("I'm not your therapist"). Makes me think about how sometimes, when people have had their boundaries chronically ignored in one area of life, they may misattribute the source of their exhaustion to something or someone else.

That crossing guard is so beautiful, tbh.

Tbh, I've heard people make that "underpaying a white teacher to teach Black history is almost reparation" argument unironically in real life.

So glad they snuck in some history discussion about MLK and Malcolm X (and it makes me think Jacob has grown as a teacher).

I like how Barbara is the one making the V-Day dinner reservations (breaking stereotypes and sharing emotional labor in the relationship).

"Sweetheart, it is possible to like two people at the same time." This is true and important. It doesn't necessarily mean Barb thinks one should pursue romantic relationships with multiple people, but this is a fact that I actually think younger generations understand less well than older generations. And I appreciate the Abbott writers' exploding the dichotomy!

I just enjoy the comedic set-up of Ava sitting down at Zach and Jacob's Valentine's Day lunch table.

I would think that Lego bouquet is so cool. I agree with Janine.

Barb at least had a sense that Gary was going to do something for Valentine's.

I wonder whether Melissa's learning disability affected her initial reading of "I (heart) U" and made her think "IOU." Kind of interesting that she didn't assume that it was about Gary's love through context, however.

Barb says "I love you" with such tenderness. Also, what is with her microexpressions?? I think she might be saying "Girl, come on" when Melissa's slow on the uptake, but I'm also seeing something complex and perhaps...melancholy there.

New relationship energy amplifies everything. Melissa has stability and comfort with Barbara, at least in a platonic sense, that she doesn't have with Gary yet.

That was a fun and 'inspiring' episode.

“Truthfully, I’m not sure there is anything you can do Mel” I sighed “please. There has to be something” she stepped closer. “Anna, she loves the colour green specifically forest green and baking, cupcakes are her favourite” I breathed in.

“You can visit whenever you like so you need to know things about her and if you prove good with her I- you could even have nights”. Melissa smiled to herself “thank you Y/n/n” I nodded in acknowledgment “I realise I shouldn’t be here Melissa, I shouldn’t have come”.

“Would you have told me about Anna if you hadn’t come today?”

“No”

“Why not?”

“Why not?” I laugh “how would I? I didn’t know if you had changed your number or if you had this new life with children that you love. What if I told you about Anna and you wanted nothing to do with her?”

My eyes couldn’t meet Melissa’s as I paced back and forth beginning to rant “and I mean pushing Anna into this new life now is hard, she’s so used to having just her mama and her duncle Liam”

“Duncle?”

I paused “it means her dad uncle but that’s besides the point I wouldn’t know what to do if the worst case scenario was to happen plus I had tried to tell you before. Now you’re getting married” I sighed wrapping my arms around myself.

“What if I don’t want to get married?” She asked causing me to stop “what if I’m doing this because I’m not getting any younger?” She laughed shaking her head. “I mean look at me Y/n, I’m still hot but I’m old y’know I never had a life that all these little girl’s dream of”.

“I got married too young to the wrong person and when I found the right one I screwed it up just like everything else I touch. And now I find that I have a daughter”

“Don’t”

“Don’t what?”

“Don’t get married if you don’t want to”

I shake my head zoning back in as Melissa waves her hand in front of my face.

“Anna, she deserves both parents even if Liam has been an awesome dad there’s still things we can’t explain to her” I smile sadly. “For me there isn’t much, I came to terms with your absence years ago it doesn’t mean I don’t miss you I’m just used to the silence now”.

“Why did you come here?” Melissa asked “why did you call?” I returned “I asked first” she held her head up “hope? That maybe you would see me and change your mind but it was stupid of me I realise it now” she looked unfairly beautiful. I hoped Gary was a good guy who treated her well and I hoped she could live the life she’d always dreamed even if that life wasn’t lived with me.

You sat beside Nonna who held your hand as Melissa walked down the aisle “I always told her she was stupid for leaving” she whispered in your ear. “I can’t stand this one, I don’t think he can even wash his balls without Melissa holding his hand”.

You tried not to laugh, oh karma it seemed sadly “it’s her life Nonna” you responded with a small shrug “we’ve made our beds, I raise our daughter and she gets married”.

“You’re a good girl Y/n/n if only Melissa wasn’t so damn stubborn”

Soon enough Melissa stood at the front her hands clasped with Garys and boy did you find him severely underwhelming. At least Joe had been attractive, you watched as they said their vows the more you watched the more annoyed you felt.

Gary hardly had vows it seemed like a shopping list while Melissa gave her everything and when it came to I do he only seemed cocky. Smug bastard you thought to yourself while Nonna tsked in disapproval, Melissa paused as she looked back to the crowd.

Her eyes met yours “I-” her face seemed desperate, you nodded “I.. I” she began to panic slightly “go on” Gary rushed. This was getting messy the hold on your hand tightened as Nonna watched the man “I can’t Gary I’m sorry” she sighed in defeat.

“I have made many mistakes in my life and I don���t want this to be another one, I love you I do but we won’t work” her voice soft. “I’m sorry for wasting everyone’s time” Melissa turned to the crowd “I- this isn’t how I planned my life and definitely not who I had planned my life with”.

Slowly she walked sadly back up the aisle leaving Gary at the altar.

I think season 3 spells the end for Melissa and Gary

Episode 1 synopsis mentions Melissa being asked a surprising question.

The whole cast have been teasing surprises, which could be a proposal, but honestly I think that’s too obvious

Viewers expect proposals to fill the tv formula of a wedding in a middle season - like phyllis and bob in the office. So that’s not really surprising. And upon reading that synopsis line everyone’s seemed to gone ‘proposal’.

Janelle said the writing is never corny or expected - exactly what a proposal would be. Plus to be in the series, especially in season premiere it’d happen in school. I mean an ‘I love you’ gesture in school is bad enough but a proposal? Melissa deserves better.

And if we look at Melissa, do you really think a schemmenti would agree to their wedding being filmed? It wouldn’t make it into the ‘documentary’ because half of her family’s faces would need blurring, so doesn’t really make sense as a plot point.

As for vending machine guy, I think if he was meant to last Quinta would put more effort into him. I don’t think she’d have one dimensional one interest gary be Melissa’s end game. Most of the few times he’s been mentioned it’s been negative (having to console him on halloween, talking during football games), again not endgame material. I mean his valentines gesture was shared with Barb, what could’ve been a sweet moment that made us root for them was about workwives instead.

Lisa has said there’s lots of tumultuous stuff, the writers again are writing to her breadth of skills so not just comedy. I think it spells goodbye gary. For Melissa’s character arc settling down doesn’t really make sense. As Lisa’s said she’s an angry slut, yet we haven’t seen her slut it up. She drops these lines implying bisexuality but hasn’t had the opportunity to date a woman. I think marrying her off so early would stunt her character development opportunities.

As for how it happens …

Perhaps a failed proposal.

Perhaps Joe turns up (my dream).

Perhaps barb gets in the way.

But Gary? He’s a goner.
