no kiss I see A-‘s irritability is returning but she behaves as well as she can poor thing we must be off as soon as we can – fine sunny morning F57° in the sun but I feel very cold – as if it was a hardfrost - breakfast at 9 ½ having seen Mr. Horner while he was with A- - he mentioned the mechanics Institute – but on my asking if I was to consider what he said as official he answered no! but it was said he was in the habit of coming here and therefore they wished him to inquire if I should object to let them have ground – I said I would consider about it – I was anxious for the spread of genuine knowledge but would not inflict upon the town a building in bad architectural taste – I should wish to see and be satisfied with the plan of any building before its being built on my ground – I did not always admire the taste of committees – I would consider the thing – asked what was wanted – a library, museum school room reading rooms chemical laboratories thought of 20x15 yards for the site – I asked him to give me a sketch of his own idea of what he himself should like – and I would tell him what I thought – I mentioned the building at Keighley as a faulty piece of architectural taste – he did not seem aware of its making £43 per annum – he mentioned wanting a chemical laboratory under the building – that I said would not be wise – it would put them at the mercy of any tyro to blow them up or not – he wanted the lecture-room to hold 600 people! said they had 2000 books – those I said would be easily placed – breakfast at 9 ½ , sat till near 12 thinking over and sketching in pencil a rough idea of a building according to the wishes rather perhaps than to the means of the Institution – but Mr. Horner said they had observed that they should be obliged to have a handsome building if it was near the hotel the building in progress at Bradford it is supposed will be done for £2000 – with A- from about 12 to 12 ½ - then had the little mahogany chiffonier I got for my aunt brought up out of the drawing into the blue room and arranging my books (the small and well bound) in it till about 1 ¼ then went down to Robert Mann who came about the thorns moving that they have just stubbed in the old remains of hedge-rows – long talk about the rag-water and getting water to the engine till Mr. Samuel Bates came about 2 and brought his fathers’ (Mr. George Bates of Sowerby bridge) plans of the Liserwick mill corn-grinding machinery but no estimate with them – they did the wheel of the Miss Walker of Walerclough – 40ft. diameter and 6ft. of breast – they had bad tenants (Mr. Sowden) who did not keep the grates clean – let pieces of wood get in, and break the buckets and did not oil the wheel properly – Mr. Edwards of Pynest has a mill at Ripponden water wheel (under Mr. Wheelwright) 25ft. diameter 6ft. breast – wished me to ride over to see a new corn-mill at Hebden bridge – 6 per stone (Listerwick to have 5 per at 3 horse power per pair = 15 horse power) – water wheel 42ft. diameter and 6ft. breast – Mr. Henry Priestley going to build a mill in [?] valley 60ft. of fall at 18/. per ft. = £54 per annum and a Mr. Hinscliffe had bid £100 then £200 and lastly £300 for the [far] simple of it – Mr. HP- had had Messrs. Bates to level and value for him – annoyed at the lowness of the offer – his steward John Mande of Sowerby bridge advised his building – but was worse again on Friday – not expected to live from day to day – quite out of his head – his own man servant told SB- that it was sure to be true it was near 3 before he went away – then wrote all the above of today till 3 ¼ - then out – Ingham and his boy at the hay-place (opening into the farm and adjoining the new necessaries) wall – saw Sam Booth come up with his right ear covered with blood – stubbed between the old hedge Pearson Ing and round Ing and Michael had struck him accidentally with a mattock – sent John Booth with Sam to the Dispensary – then with Robert + 3 exclusive of Sam – then with Joseph Mann – wants me to let the dead water (upper bed dead water) off near where they are pulling up Long goit stuff within a few yards of the engine pit – then to John Oates’s – stood talking to John O- a very long time till after 6 – Joseph Mann will begin taking the sod off tomorrow for sinking Listerwick tomorrow – told John I should take the whole of that piece – he made no objection – I said took it then as settled yes! – I said nothing more – no allowance was named – he would know I should not forget his paying £60 instead of £70 for the farm – he said I ought to have another shuttle to let the Spiggs water come into the meer at the bottom –asked him to think this over and tell me how he thought it should be managed – he said the meer-banks had sunk 3ft. – too low now – the by-wash at the low end too low – the water would be over or very near the top of the present banks – home at 6 ½ ready in 10 minutes – dinner at 7 – tea – wrote the last 11 ½ lines till 9 50 F29° at 9 ¾ a few snow showers during the day till between 2 and 3 pm afterwards [?]

Jim Morrison foi uma testemunha do Caso Roswell? Os 50 anos da morte do Rei Lagarto

O mito The Doors centrado na figura de Jim Morrison não tem The End. O baterista John Densmore já havia dito na entrevista para o documentário No One Here Gets Out Alive: A Tribute do Jim Morrison, de 1981, que JM “deixara muito a ser descoberto”. Não, não vai terminar. Como todos os mitos, se reatualiza e se revigora. Passados 50 anos do lançamento dos dois primeiros discos, The Doors e Strange Days, tudo já se falou mas parece que ainda há muito o que se falar.

JM, é claro, fez tudo para se converter nesse mito de propósito e caso pensado, chegado que era a livros de filosofia, antropologia, mitologia e religião comparada e a escritores que trilharam bem antes dele o mesmo caminho de morte & renascimento. Garantia que o espírito de um velho índio havia transmigrado para seu corpo (no que reivindicava ter adquirido poderes xamânicos, sendo capaz de “ter visões pela tribo e curá-la”), sugeriu que fundassem uma nova religião, profetizou vários acontecimentos que se cumpriram (entre eles sua própria morte precoce aos 27 anos há 50 anos atrás, em 3 de julho de 1971), e chegou a criar um alter ego com vida própria, uma segunda persona, que usava para manifestar seu lado mais sombrio, a que chamou de “Mr. Mojo Risin”, um anagrama de Jim Morrison (na canção L.A. Woman, ele repete várias vezes “Mr. Mojo Risin…”).

JM também se autointitulava o “Rei Lagarto”, como deixou registrado em seu longo poema “The Celebration of the Lizard”, parcialmente musicada com o título de “Not to Touch the Earth” e que foi incluído no terceiro álbum da banda, Waiting For The Sun, cuja parte interna trazia o desenho de um lagarto. O poema completo musicado, pela sua longa duração, só aparece em gravações ao vivo, como o que se ouve em Absolutely Live, o primeiro álbum ao vivo da banda lançado em 1970. Em um trecho, JM afirma com voz cavernosa: “I am the Lizard King, I can do anything” (“Eu sou o Rei Lagarto, eu posso fazer tudo”).

JM como que já sabia que iria ser imortalizado, tanto que adiantou e ironizou isso em sua outra longa música “When The Music’s Over”, do álbum Strange Days: “Cancel my subscription to the Resurrection / Send my credentials to the House of Detention / I got some friends inside” (“Cancele minha assinatura para a ressurreição / Mande minhas credenciais para a Casa de Detenção / Eu tenho alguns amigos lá”).

Para quem sempre teve pendores para o oculto, seria natural que o conectassem aos UFOs, ainda mais por ser filho do almirante George Stephen Morrison e ter vivido na época do surgimento e auge do Fenômeno, outro de nossos mitos modernos inquebrantáveis. Assim é que em 31 de maio último, um acadêmico e pesquisador independente profissional, que se identifica apenas por Stephen S., formado pela Carnegie Mellon University, especialista em eletrônica e engenharia espacial e de telecomunicações, publicou no Linkedin um artigo intitulado “Musician Jim Morrison – UFO Eyewitness?“, em que revela ter perguntado anos atrás ao ufólogo, físico nuclear e conferencista norte-americano Stanton Terry Friedman, sobre se JM poderia ter testemunhado o Incidente em Roswell naquela quarta-feira, 2 de julho de 1947, ou nos dias subsequentes. Friedman disse que nesse dia JM e sua família não estavam trafegando em nenhuma rodovia, mas que o garoto JM, então com 3 anos e meio de idade, pode ter sido testemunha da operação limpeza e/ou resgate em andamento. A família de JM provavelmente trafegava pela Rota 66, indo para Albuquerque, Novo México, onde a irmã de Jim, Anne Robin, nasceria mais tarde naquele ano.

O acontecimento decisivo na vida de JM, aquele que ele reputava como o mais importante de sua vida, foi justamente o do incidente na estrada quando tinha 4 anos, e que ele descrevia da seguinte maneira, como se pode ouvir em An American Prayer, álbum póstumo de poesias musicadas em 1978 pelos remanescentes do grupo:

“A primeira vez que descobri a morte… eu, os meus pais e os meus avós, íamos de automóvel no meio do deserto ao amanhecer. Um caminhão carregado de índios, tinha chocado com outro veículo e havia índios espalhados por toda a rodovia, sangrando. Eu era apenas uma criança e fui obrigado a ficar dentro do carro, enquanto os meus pais foram ver o que se passava. Não consegui ver nada – para mim era apenas tinta vermelha esquisita e pessoas deitadas no chão, mas sentia que alguma coisa tinha se passado, porque conseguia perceber a vibração das pessoas à minha volta. Então de repente me dei conta que elas não sabiam mais do que eu sobre o que tinha acontecido. Esta foi a primeira vez que senti medo… e eu penso que nessa altura as almas daqueles índios mortos – talvez de um ou dois deles – andavam a correr e aos pulos e se conectaram à minha alma, e eu, apenas como uma esponja, fiquei ali sentado absorvendo-as.”

Embora os pais de JM tenham dito que tal incidente nunca ocorreu, JM ficou tão perturbado que seus pais precisaram insistir que tudo não passara de um pesadelo. Ora, esse episódio, aparentemente insignificante, e que não o foi, pelo menos para JM, apresenta aquelas mesmas características de certos casos ufológicos em que os envolvidos têm suas memórias parcialmente apagadas ou modificadas, e nos quais remanesce, entretanto, o trauma em alguns deles. Por que tal incidente marcou tão profundamente JM, a ponto de assumir ser ele mesmo um xamã e fazer inúmeras referências em suas poesias, canções e entrevistas, como por exemplo nas músicas “Peace Frog” e “Ghost Song”?

É muita coincidência que O “Incidente com os Índios na Estrada” tenha ocorrido justamente na mesma época e local do Incidente em Roswell, e que tal como este último, ser classificado como uma ficção completa da imaginação de certas pessoas. Stephen S. pergunta: “Se uma família de quatro navajos tinha se acidentado na estrada, por que tantos policiais estariam resguardando a cena e por que o Exército estaria cuidando dos feridos? Infelizmente, mesmo hoje, ninguém se importaria.”

A “conexão psíquica” com um velho navajo à beira da estrada, um “chefe sábio” que usava algum tipo de roupa cerimonial, poderia realmente ter sido uma conexão não com um índio, mas com um alienígena usando alguma roupa espacial e que para minimizar o impacto ou por algum outro motivo, entrou na mente dos circunstantes, mormente na de Jim, ainda mais por ser uma criança, e os fez vê-los como índios. E se os pais de JM negavam tal acontecimento, teriam sido suas memórias apagadas? E a pergunta inevitável: Seria esse alien do tipo grey reptiliano? Se sim, poderia ter conferido características “reptilianas” a JM, daí seu epíteto de “Rei Lagarto?”

Uma das últimas gravações, “Riders on the Storm”, a última faixa do lado B do sexto e último álbum, L. A. Woman, de 1971, vagamente baseada no assassino em série Billy Cook, que no início dos anos 50 se passou por caroneiro e matou uma família inteira nos EUA, parece trazer pistas que indicam ter JM testemunhado Roswell. Os “Viajantes da Tempestade” poderiam muito bem ser os aliens, uma vez que naquela noite de quarta-feira, 2 de julho de 1947, sobre a desolada paisagem do Novo México, desencadeou-se uma das piores tempestades elétricas a atingirem a região nos últimos tempos, tempestades essas que já haviam abatido aviões na área. A letra diz: “Into this world we’re thrown / Like a dog without a bone / An actor out alone” (“Neste mundo fomos jogados / Como um cão sem um osso /Um ator solitário”). Os que foram “jogados” neste mundo poderiam ser os aliens que caíram na Terra com seu disco voador. Esses aliens se pareciam com um “cão sem osso” e estavam sozinhos neste mundo.

Teria o “alien de Roswell” se comunicado telepaticamente com Jim e lhe conferido algum dom especial ou lhe incumbido alguma missão? Afora sua elevada inteligência e seu extraordinário talento poético/musical, JM adquiriu, como disse, a capacidade de prever eventos futuros e se antecipar a eles, tanto que suas letras e músicas refletem não só o estado em que se encontrava a sociedade naquele final dos anos 60, mas como que já prenunciavam todo o caos e violência que se seguiriam nas décadas seguintes. Não é à toa que os Doors continuem sendo curtidos com o mesmo ou maior grau de intensidade pelos jovens das novas gerações.

Stephen S. revela ainda que em 2012 entrou em contato com o produtor de TV Bryce Zabel e lhe contou essa história, já que Zabel, nos anos de 1996-97, foi o criador e um dos responsáveis na NBC pelo seriado de ficção científica na linha de Arquivo X chamado Dark Skies, que infelizmente só durou uma temporada, em um total de vinte episódios. O décimo episódio, “Last Wave”, mostrava JM com 22 anos (interpretado por Brent Fraser, que não se parecia em nada com ele), quando ainda estudava cinema na UCLA e não tinha formado o The Doors. No episódio, Jim ajudou a dupla central, o casal John Loengard (Eric Close) e Kim Sayers (Megan Ward), que estavam examinando os resíduos tóxicos que andavam contaminando as praias de Venice, sendo essa contaminação causada por extraterrestres hostis. Stephen S. admite que foi esse episódio que o levou a pensar por que JM estaria conectado aos UFOs. O próprio Zabel não havia percebido que a conexão era – ou poderia ter sido – devido ao Incidente em Roswell.

Dark Skies ia muito além de Arquivo X e explorava de forma muito mais aprofundada a mitologia ufológica. John Loengard e sua esposa Kim Sayers viajam pelos EUA tentando ficar um passo à frente do Majestic 12, criado logo após o Incidente em Roswell, que encobre tudo relacionado aos UFOs, ao mesmo tempo em que combatem os planos de domínio dos aliens hive em andamento. Ao longo de sua jornada on the road, eles vão vivenciando todos os acontecimentos dos anos 60 (incluindo o assassinato de John Kennedy, a estreia americana dos Beatles, a ascensão do movimento hippie e da psicodelia, os conflitos raciais, os protestos contra a Guerra do Vietnã, etc.), e cruzam com inúmeros personagens conhecidos, como o bilionário Howard Hughes, e é claro, Jim Morrison. Os hive usavam figuras carismáticas da sociedade para executar seus planos, controlando suas mentes, e manipulavam eventos históricos a seu favor. Nesta série é que se deu a estreia da atriz blonde bombshell Jeri Ryan, que pouco depois iria explodir em Star Trek: Voyager como a humana resgatada dos borgs Sete de Nove. Tanto em DS como em STV, ela “caiu” de paraquedas no meio da trama para fazer os índices de audiência subirem.

As poesias e letras de música de Jim trariam outras referências que apontariam sua ligação com os UFOs? De modo direto, não. Todavia, sente-se sempre uma certa dose de estranheza quando se as ouve ou se as lê, como se tivessem sido escritas primordialmente para outsiders, pessoas deslocadas, anormais, excluídas e marginalizadas, sem vez nem voz neste mundo, em suma, para verdadeiros “ETs” jogados na Terra.

As frases de “People Are Strange”, contidas no álbum Strange Days, de 1967, são emblemáticas: “People are strange, when you’re a stranger / Faces look ugly when you’re alone / Women seem wicked, when you’re unwanted / Streets are uneven, when you’re down / When you’re strange / Faces come out of the rain / When you’re strange / No one remembers your name / When you’re strange…” (“Pessoas são estranhas quando você é um estranho / Rostos parecem feios quando você está sozinho / Mulheres parecem cruéis quando você é indesejado / Ruas são irregulares quando você está por baixo / Quando você é estranho / Rostos saem da chuva / Quando você é estranho / Ninguém lembra seu nome / Quando você é estranho…”)

A própria “Strange Days”, que dá título ao álbum, parece ter sido escrita por um ET perdido na Terra ou uma vítima de controle mental: “Strange days have found us / Strange days have tracked us down / They’re going to destroy / Our casual joys / We shall go on playing or find another town / Strange eyes fill strange rooms / Voices will signal their tired end / […] Strange days have found us / And through their strange hours / We linger alone, Bodies confused, memories misused / As we run from the day / To a strange night of stone.” (“Dias estranhos nos encontraram / Dias estranhos nos perseguiram / Eles vão destruir / Nossas raras alegrias / Nós temos que seguir em frente / Ou encontrar um novo abrigo / Olhos estranhos ocupam salas estranhas / Vozes anunciarão o seu cansado fim / […] Dias estranhos nos encontraram / E por suas horas estranhas / Ficamos sozinhos à espera / Corpos se confundem / Memórias são mal usadas / Enquanto trocamos o dia / Pela estranha noite de pedra”)

Inovadora em sua estranheza, a capa de Strange Days, aliás, é uma história à parte. Jim Morrison não queria que seu rosto aparecesse e tivesse tanto destaque quanto no álbum de estreia, muito comercial e apelativo para seu gosto, no que tentou convencer o diretor artístico Bill Harvey que o deixasse e os outros três componentes posarem em uma grande sala cercados por cem cães! Quando perguntado de onde havia tirado uma tão surreal e original ideia, Jim respondeu que tudo seria uma metáfora, pois cão (dog) é o inverso de Deus (God)!

Alegou-se, compreensivelmente, que seria muito perigoso, e portanto inviável, a concretização de tal ideia, no que a criação de uma arte original ficou a cargo do fotógrafo Joel Brodsky – o autor das fotos mais conhecidas e icônicas de Morrison, aquelas em que aparece nu da cintura para cima e com os braços estendidos como se fosse crucificado -, que, inspirado provavelmente nas trupes circenses dos filmes Noites de Circo (1953), de Ingmar Bergman, e La Strada (1954), de Federico Fellini, foi até um dos cruzamentos da Terceira Avenida, em Manhattan, Nova York, a fim de buscar personas condizentes, mas na falta delas acabou tendo de improvisar.

As mais icônicas e reproduzidas fotos de Jim Morrison, tiradas por Joel Brodsky, autor da capa Strange Days, em que JM praticamente não aparece.

De todos os artistas que aparecem na capa, somente os acrobatas são verdadeiros artistas de rua. O malabarista, por exemplo, é o assistente de Brodsky, Frank Kollege. Os anões são atores gêmeos (que aparecem, cada qual, na parte frontal e traseira do disco). O levantador de peso era o porteiro e segurança do New York Friars Club. O trompetista era um motorista de táxi que levou cinco dólares para tirar a foto simulando tocar trompete. O chapéu que ele está usando fazia parte do seu próprio “uniforme” de taxista. A modelo de cabelos curtos, sandálias e vestido longo colorido era Zazel Wild, a estilista da esposa do fotógrafo. Apesar da renitência de Jim em não aparecer na capa, para que os Doors fossem vinculados ao disco, um discreto e quase imperceptível cartaz da banda foi afixado ao fundo. As lojas de disco ainda tiveram de colar adesivos da banda na capa para identificá-los mais facilmente.

A fotografia foi tirada em Sniffen Court, um pátio localizado na 150-158 East 36th Street, entre a Third Avenue e a Lexington Avenue, no distrito de Murray Hill, em Manhattan, Nova York, e é assim chamado em referência ao arquiteto que o projetou, John Sniffen. Sua construção remonta a 1860 e sua função era servir de estábulos. Cinquenta anos depois, tornou-se um complexo de habitação residencial. Em grande parte graças a arte da capa, o Sniffen Court tornou-se um lugar proeminente para o turismo em Nova York.

No terceiro livro de poesias de Jim, An American Prayer, lançado em meados de 1970, lemos estes versos iniciais, que parecem indagações dirigidas a um ser de outro planeta: “Do you know the warm progress under the stars? Do you know we exist? Have you forgotten the keys to the Kingdom?” (Você está ciente do nosso progresso acalorado sob as estrelas? Você sabe que nós existimos? Você esqueceu as chaves do Reino?”)

Klokken 4 om eftermiddagen stormede Fremmedlegionen med Edmond Genet op af skyttegravene og under heftig fjendtlig beskydning af artilleri og ikke mindst maskingeværer arbejdede franskmændene sig frem over ingenmandsland mod de tyske linjer. To gange havde algierske tropper forsøgt at bryde igennem forsvaret uden held og havde efterladt tusindvis af faldne på slagmarken. Nu var det Fremmedlegionens tur. Det blev et ragnarok. Edmond Genet var en af de få, som nåede helt frem til fjendens pigtrådsspærringer og pludselig opdagede han, at han var alene med en ung schweizer. De ventede på deres kammerater, men der kom ikke flere.

Der er faldne overalt og de få overlevende fra angrebet måtte trække sig tilbage til deres egne skyttegrave. Regimentet er nu reduceret til blot 892 mand og Fremmedlegionen var reelt udslettet. “Jeg vil aldrig i mit liv glemme den 28. september” skrev han senere forbavset over at være i live.

Genet havde lovet sin mor at skrive, så hun ikke skulle gå i uvished, men han blev overhalet inden om at den amerikanske presse. Den 5. oktober 1915 skrev New York Times i en nyhedsartikel, at 13 amerikanere var blevet dræbt i Slaget om Champagne “her iblandt Edmond C.C.Genet - barnebarn til Governor Clinton”. Så i 14 dage gik Genet’s ulykkelige mor omkring og troede hun havde mistet sin unge søn.

Edmond Genet var en utrolig pligtopfyldende dreng. Han mistede sin far allerede som 6-årig, og han og hans to brødre arbejdede flittigt hver dag efter skole for at hjælpe moren med at forsørge familien. En arbejdsgiver, som var imponeret over den unge Edmonds arbejdsmoral, besluttede sig til at hjælpe ham ind på et marineakademi. men den unge drengs evner til matematik strakte ikke til uddannelsen og i stedet lod han sig hverve til dem amerikanske flåde. Og det var under en landgang i Le Havre i Frankrig i januar 1915 at Edmond Genet besluttede sig at desertere og melde sig til Fremmedlegionen.

Efter Champagne Slaget, hvor et halvt hundrede skandinaver i øvrigt også deltog, fortsatte Edmund Genet i den stærkt reducerede Fremmedlegion indtil 5. maj 1916 hvor han blev optaget som “pilot elev” i det unge franske luftvåben. Han gjorde det godt - var flittig, modig og havde flair for at flyve - og i januar 1917 blev han optaget i den berømte “Escadrille Américaine”, der senere skiftede navn til “Escadrille Lafayette”. Det var en jager escadrille - eller på fransk ‘une escadrille de chasse* som blev vidt berømt overalt i verden. Den bestod af modige amerikanske frivillige under fransk ledelse, der kæmpede heroisk for Frankrig og frihed længe før USA overhovedet kom med i krigen.

To års krig havde gjort den 19-årige Genet til fatalist. Han var klar over, at hver dag kunne blive hans sidste, men han søgte aldrig de tilsyneladende sikre steder i kampen i luften. Og han var fyldt af moralske overvejelser. Han havde haft en kæreste i New York i fire år og havde hele tiden trofast holdt sig fra alle andre piger - han ville gerne forloves, men syntes ikke han kunne forsvare det, som situationen var. I februar 1917 fik han brev fra sin mor, der fortalte at hans elskede Star - hans Etoile - havde forlovet sig med naboens søn. Edmond var knust. Nu betød hans unge liv intet mere - alle de tanker, han havde haft om sin elskede, blev pludselig ligegyldige og for første gang var han overbevist om, at han ikke ville overleve krigen.

Edmond Genet fløj med de største piloter som Lufberry og McConnell, der var de oprindelige stiftere af Escadrille Lafayette. De var ‘esser’ tilbedt af hele Frankrig. Under en patrulje over fronten i marts 1917 bliver Edmond Genet og McConnell angrebet af tyske jagere. McConnell bliver skudt ned og Genet forsøger tappert og loyalt at hjælpe ham men bliver selv såret i ansigtet og tyske maskingeværkugler saver den ene vinge af så han må humpe hjem på 3 vinger.

McConnells maskine bliver siden fundet totalt knust og McConnell selv bliver fundet i sit undertøj, efter at nogen har taget alt hans varme og dyre flyveudstyr. Genet er ude af sig selv og føler, han burde have gjort mere for sin kammerat, men hans chef fortæller ham, at han har handlet ud over sin pligt og indstiller ham til “Croix de Guerre” for hans tapperhed. De kommende dage tager Genet på hævntogt for at finde nogle tyskere at skyde ned - men uden resultat.

En måned senere er han igen på patrulje, denne gang sammen med esset Raoul Lufbery, som har nedskudt 8 tyske fly. Genet har det skidt om morgenen men flyver alligevel og denne dag går det galt. Han bliver ramt af shrapnels fra tyskernes antiluftskyts og styrker ned. Med motoren for fulde omdrejninger hamrer hans Nieuport ned i jorden og bliver pulveriseret.

Edmond C.C. Genet dør den 16. april 1917. Det er 10 dage efter, at USA har erklæret Tyskland krig. Unge Genet bliver den første amerikaner, som falder efter, at hans land er trådt ind i 1. verdenskrig. Det er tankevækkende. Den unge Edmond Charles Clinton Genet var tip-tip-oldebarn og navnebror til den i USA kendte ‘Citizen Genet’, der var Frankrigs ambassadør i USA under Napoleons-krigene og som i 1793 forsøgte at overtale USA til at gå med i kampen mod briterne. Principielt gjorde den 17-årige Genet det samme, blot var fjenden denne gang Tyskland. Og dybt tankevækkende, så blev den unge pilot den første amerikaner som døde for et USA i krig.

Jeg har fundet Escadrille Lafayette’s ‘journal des march’ for den 16. april 1917 og her kan man se, at den unge flyver gik på vingerne kl. 12:45, men feltet til højre er tomt; det er her hjemkomsten skulle være angivet.

Edmond Genet’s død skaber stor opmærksomhed i Frankrig og Amerika.

Den 15. januar 1918 sender den nyvalgte amerikanske president Woodrow Wilson et brev til Genets mor, hvor han kondolerer for tabet af hendes søn og samtidig lykønsker hende ‘uden det skal misforstås’ for den fantastiske præstation, som hendes søn udførte.

Præsidentens ord berører mig ikke men jeg bliver dybt rørt, når jeg læser et brev skrevet af Genets kammerat Walter Lowell til en fælles ven:

Jeg er tilsyneladende ham, der altid bringer dårligt nyt. Denne gang er det lille Genet som er død. Han blev dræbt i eftermiddags, mens han fløj med Lufbery. De fløj lavt på grund af skyerne og de tyske luftbatterier skød konstant. Pludselig vendte Genet omkring og fløj tilbage. Lufbery fløj efter men kunne ikke finde ham. Da han kom hjem blev de ringet op og fik fortalt, at han var styrtet ned - totalt knust - blot få hundrede meter fra hvor McConnell blev dræbt. Vi har mistet en af de mest pligtopfyldende piloter vi nogensinde har haft og nogensinde vil få. Jeg er glad for at kunne konstatere at hans omtale nu er officiel samt at den tyske maskine, som Genet angreb for at forsvare McConnell, blev tvunget til at lande, så mandskabet er nu i fangenskab.

Overalt hvor Genet kom frem konstaterede han, at ‘alle var så flinke ved ham’. Ja for pokker, han var et barn, da krigen startede og ønskede blot at gøre sin pligt og leve op til andres forventninger. Han kæmpede uafbrudt i over to år - han var udsat for uhyrligheder, oplevede at hans regiment blev udslettet, men alligevel brokkede han sig aldrig. Han gjorde hele tiden sit bedste. Han blev aldrig forrået af krigens rædsler. Tværtimod, hans personlighed udviklede sig hele tiden. Alle omkring ham var knust over hans død. Mest rørt og vemodig bliver jeg dog, når jeg læser det brev, hans chef Kaptajn Georges Thenault skrev til Edmond Genet’s mor:

Var han virkelig 24 år gammel? Han så så ung ud, som et venligt barn, men ikke desto mindre var han en modig mand...det må være smertefuldt at miste en kær søn, men hvis det kan være en trøst for Dem, så vil jeg sige, at De er mor til en stor sjæl”

Det, som kan slå mig helt ud, er chefens sætning “Var han virkelig 24 år gammel?”

Nej han var blot en 20-årig venlig dreng, som havde snydt sig til at skrive verdenshistorie. Genet hører også med til persongalleriet i min kommende fransk-amerikanske fortælling, der strækker sig fra 1914 og helt på til 60erne.

I 1918 blev Edmond Genet’s breve udgivet og jeg har netop gennemlæst hans breve i en førsteudgave, jeg har været så heldig at finde. Jeg har også læst hans chefs memoirer: Georges Thenault - L’Escadrille Lafayette og endelig har jeg læst “Flying For France” som James R. McConnell nåede at skrive, inden han blev skudt ned under den fatale patrulje med Edmond Genet.

MARKER NUMBER EIGHTEEN Charles Town The Scene of Many En- gagements. After Gen. William E. Jones had left New Market on his West Virginia raid in May, 1863, Lieutenant G. B. Phill- pott and Captain R. P. Chew gathered together about 45 men of Company "Q", and crossing the mountain, went down the Luray Valley through Front Royal, crossing the Shenandoah river at Myers Ford about 11 o'clock at night, May loth. They pursued their way to Tate's woods, about three quarters of a mile from Charles Town. They dismounted here and tied their horses, and marched behind the house of Andrew Hunter, down the back street. Thence in front of Hawks' Factory to George and turning moved in the direction of the Court House. Phillpott and Chew reached the old cattle scales where a sentinel challenged them and raised his gun. They both fired on him and he fled into the Court House yard and fell. Summers' Company was quartered in the Court House and the Carter House. They numbered about ninety men. A lieutenant and ten men stationed in the parlor of the Carter House opened fire upon us as soon as Phillpott and Chew fired upon the sentry. They kept up a constant fussilade. It had been arranged that Lieutenant J. W. Carter of Chew's Battery should attack and capture the soldiers in the Carter House. He was assigned six men for this pur- pose. When the Company reached the corner of the Court House yard, Carter with his men moved swiftly up the walk in front of the Court House, and crossing the street oppo- site the Carter House threw open the hall door and entered the parlor. Striking the lieutenant over the head with the butt of his pistol he demanded a surrender. The guard threw down their arms and were taken prisoners. In the meantime Phillpott and Chew, with the remain- ing men, had entered the Court House and captured, with- out trouble, the balance of the company of Capt. Summers. Summers, who happened to be out at the time of the attack, hid in the wood pile of Major Hawks, whose house was nearby. The horses in the hotel stable were captured, and the men were mounted with the prisoners behind them. Summers company numbered about ninety men, sixty of whom were captured with their arms, and about seventy five horses. Returning through Tate's woods the prisoners were mounted on the broken down horses, and at daylight the whole party recrossed the river at Myers' Ford. This capture was made without a single man being killed or wounded on either side. The Federals seemed dazed by the night attack and offered but feeble resistence. On October 18, 18(38, Gen. John D. Imboden marched to the vicinity of Charles Town for the purpose of captur- ing the enemy, who were posted there in large force. The 9th Maryland Regiment of Infantry and Capt, Summer's Cavalry Company were quartered, the first in the Court House, and the latter in the Jail. Imboden formed a line of battle on the Hanson farm west of the town, and extending his line to the east to the Kabletown road. He located a battery near the house of Robert Brown but found, after firing a few shots, he could not reach the Court House. He then extended his line across the Harpers Ferry road to the farm of James M. Rauson, and placing his gun on the hill novth of town fired several shots through the Court House. The enemy immediately evacuated the Court House and attempted a retreat towards Harpers Perry but were intercepted by the Confederates and the entire command captured, excepting Summers' company which effected its escape towards Leetown. He then commenced to retreat by the pike to Berry - ville. He was pursued by a large force of the enemy and had a number of engagements between that point and Rip- pon. Here he formed in line to check the advance of the enemy and a serious engagement took place in which a number of men on both sides were killed and wounded. The enemy discontinued their pursuit at that point and Imboden retreated unmolested with his prisoners and cap- tures. AN ACCOUNT OF THE FIGHT OF BAYLOR'S COM- PANY AT CHARLES TOWN, NOVEMBER 29, 1864. By Captain George Baylor. On the night of the 29th of November, 1804, with JJO men of Company B, we attacked the camp of the Twelfth Pennsylvania Cavalry at Charles Town. Passing through the enemy's picket line, through a hollow just east of town, under cover of a fog such as usually hangs on autumn nights over the little valleys near the river and unobserved by the sentry on the adjacent hills, we reached in safety the north side of the town and the rear of the enemy's camp, and rode quietly to a point near the block house, about twenty jards from the camp. Here the men dis- mounted, leaving the horses in charge of the fourth man in each file of fours, and noiselessly gained the block house. Steathily moving on, the sleeping camp was entered, and the occupants awoke to find themselves prisoners. There was sudden confusion and scampering among the enemy. Some twenty of their number, lodged in a stone house nearby, opened fire on us. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, we rushed upon the house, and, seizing the doors and windows, poured several volleys into the build- ing. Just as George Crayton, my brother Robert W. Bay- lor, Jr. (a boy of seventeen) and myself entered the door, several shots were fired by the inmates, one mortally injur- ing my brother and another severely injuring Crayton. After a few minutes the cry of surrender came from the group huddled together in the building, and the firing ceased. My brother and Crayton were removed to the house of Dr. Mason, who had been for years our family physician, and where I knew they would be well cared for. My brother died in a few hours, but Crayton rallied for a while and died soon after the close of the war. The loss of these two gallant soldiers was deeply deplored by their comrades, and especially by myself. In this engagement we killed and wounded 11 of the enemy, captured 27 pris- oners and 37 horses and equipments. It seems a little strange in the light of recent publica- tion of the War Records that success attended us in this attack, for we find that as early as November 23d, the day after the attack at Keyes' Ford, General Sheridan dispatch- ed General Stevenson at Harpers Ferry as follows: KERNSTOWN, VA., NOVEMBER 23, 1H64. General: It is reported that Major Congdon, of the Twelfth Pennsylvania Cavalry, reports the enemy in force at or near Charles Town. Find out if he has made this un- truthful report. If the Twelfth Pennsylvania Cavalry can- not keep that country clear of guerillas, I will take the shoulder straps off every officer belonging to the regiment and dismount the regiment in disgrace. And Captain Paine, Commanding the Twelfth Penn- sylvania on the night of the attack in his report, says: I have the honor to report that in accordance with in- formation of yesterday, our reserve post was attacked by the rebels last night between the hours of 1 1 and 12 o'clock. killing two men, wounding one, and capturing five of our men and H) horses. The enemy lost in killed, one man (a young Baylor) and three wounded. They were about 200 strong, and attacked the post from different directions, dismounted. They were commanded by a Major. Lieuten- ant Baylor was also with them, as his name was frequently mentioned by them at the time of the attack. NATHANIEL PAYNE, Captain Commanding. LIEUTENANT S. F. ADAMS, Acting Assistant Adjutant-General, Harpers Ferry, W. Va. The eyes of the Captain on that night evidently had large magnifying powers when viewing our little band of 30 men, and corresponding minimizing powers when re- counting his loss on that occasion. He was afraid of Gen- eral Sheridan's threat. After the fight at Charles Town, we retired to the neighborhood of Milldale, and got rid of our prisoners and booty. The enemy, it seems, took a scout around, as usual after a fight, and reported as follows : Headquarters Second Cavalry Division, December 1, 1864. Major William Russell, Jr., Assistant Adjutant General Cavalry: Major: The reconnoissance sent out yesterday under Major T. Gibson, Fourteenth Pennsylvania Cavalry, has re- turned, having thoroughly scouted the country between Milldale and Summit Point to near Charles Town. No enemy was seen. Mosby was reported to have been in Berryville on the 29th. Baylor, who commanded the party of rebels which fought the Twelfth Pennsylvania Cavalry at Charles Town, was killed, with one man. The Hollywood Reporter informa que la futura adaptacin mezcla de accin real y CG de la clsica serie de dibujos animados, ‘Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers‘ (Chip y Chop Guardianes Rescatadores) ha encontrado a su director en la figura de Akiva Schaffer. Hasta la fecha, los crditos de Schaffer como director incluyen ‘Flipado sobre ruedas‘ (2007), ‘Los amos del barrio‘ (2012) y ‘Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping‘ (2016).

Creada por Tad Stones y Alan Zaslove, la serie sali al aire en el canal de Disney desde 1989 a 1990, aunque previamente hubo un piloto emitido el 27 de agosto de 1988. Narraba las aventuras de Chip y Dale (en Espaa Chip y Chop), quienes junto con sus amigos Gadget, Monterey Jack y Zipper se enfrentaban a algunos de los villanos ms extravagantes que jams hayamos visto.

El equipo resolva casos y crmenes ofrecidos por sus clientes (normalmente animales antropomorfos), casos muy particulares que la polica encontraba demasiado pequeos como para ocuparse.

Disney no ha determinado si la pelcula tendr su estreno en cines o si por el contrario llegar a su nuevo servicio de transmisin Disney+. Tampoco est claro hacia dnde llevarn la historia, aunque el estudio s anunci que en ningn caso mostrar sus orgenes o ser una historia de detectives.

El guin ha sido escrito por Dan Gregor y Doug Mand (‘Most Likely to Murder’), siendo producida por David Hoberman y Todd Lieberman de Mandeville Films, continuando con una relacin de trabajo que se remonta a 1997 con ‘George of the Jungle’. Hoberman y Lieberman tambin est detrs de franquicias como ‘Los Muppets’ y el aclamado remake en accin real de ‘La bella y la bestia’.
