just thinking about the fact that gintoki’s default personality whenever his character gets reset/totalled is an honourable and loyal man.

shouka sonjuku trio & the yorozuya kids (BFY ver.)
aight imma ramble nonsense bc ao3 is still down and my life is nothing but distant memory JSDAHFJDS
we all know how it went: shouyou was taken from his kids, one he permitted himself possibly because he was possibly convinced that they would be safer if they were the farthest from him, seeing as he knew who he has to protect them the most from. it may also be that the vow of change that he took since oboro was too strong that he never thought of retaliation, thinking that in doing so would mean betraying oboro; even when that meant being together with his remaining kids. truth be told, if shouyou wanted to fight; he would've emerged victoriously. the man could take on the entire universe and get whatever he wishes, and yet he yielded. but whatever reason it may be (we weren't given closure on this one :3), it led his students further into the hell he was protecting them from. then he fell, "died" at the very hands of his own precious students. and that ripped them apart, again no closure as to what really pushed them but one could make a few guesses. be it the fact that takasugi and zura couldn't stand that they were to weak and had to let gintoki carry all the burden, or gintoki's guilt eating him alive thinking he took shouyou from zura and takasugi (other shit but that's a whole other fic JSGDJGD) and although eventually zura and gintoki found their way back to each other, rebuilding their bond and forming many others, shouyou's capture and alleged demise brought on far too many scars for anyone to truly recover (especially takasugi). but they try, anyway. zura and gin at least.
then we have kagura and shinpachi in be forever yorozuya, who fell apart because just like his sensei, gintoki disappeared. gintoki had them running in circles after him, desperately trying to find him just like how he, katsura, and takasugi led a war in order to reach shouyou. but when time passed and gintoki's death was easier to accept than whatever helplessness kagura and shinpachi felt, they fell apart as well; went on separate ways and had growing animosity towards each other, the same way gintoki and takasugi (at least) had, albeit lesser than that of the older men.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
similarly, both shinpachi and kagura kept a piece of gintoki with them; like how zura and takasugi carried their shouyou-sensei's handwritten text book safely tucked against their chest (i am under the impression [and this is canon to me idc] that both men had never left it off their persons, always carrying it wherever they went to) which eventually shielded them from fatal blows that could've claimed their lives or at least seriously injure them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and when the end nears shinpachi and kagura came together for gintoki; like what gintoki, zura and takasugi did for shouyou in the latter chapters of the silver soul arc/the final movie.

gintama was so crazy for its final boss fight to be like. the grand edgy nihilist immortal villain threatening the entire universe vs family that loves their dog very very much. realest final fight of all times now this is a fight I can take a stance for!!

favorite genre of gintama villain is the short arc one off villain that time and time again somehow ends up being yet another skeleton in gintoki’s unconditionally large trauma closet

these exact lyrics reminded me of them.
I just can’t get this scene out of my head whenever I listen to “peace”, so I made a simple/lazy edit.
it’s in my gintsu playlist too btw: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6t52uZBFsMvzNDXmagRDC7?si=2b8f1dc6a5fe4c6d

Yorozuya Request Letters - Silver Soul Arc
So we see that Hasegawa left a request letter on the empty Yorozuya office first.
Tumblr media
His letter had no label. Nothing.
Tumblr media
As we can see Otae’s been the one checking up on the place after Hasegawa left his stuff.
Otae has also been collecting the request letters of everyone else.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So the letters from left to right are Kyuubei’s, Sarutobi, Gengai and Tsukuyo. All four had labels on them They are placed on top of Hasegawa’s which was blank.
Then Otose and Otae put theirs together with the pile too.
Tumblr media
So Otae rearranged the letters a bit. Otose, Otae and Hasegawa’s letters have no labels while Kyuubei, Sarutobi, Gengai and Tsukuyo’s all have labels.
That’s interesting.
The letter which Gintoki snatched mid air was
Tumblr media
One with No label - Blank.
So that’s from either Hasegawa, Otose or Otae.
This is very trivial ofc but it got my heart pumping.
Because that letter could be
Hasegawa’s- the man who put down the initial request with the big monetary donation and the one with the biggest wish. Hasegawa seems to symbolize Edo
Otae’s - the one who has been watching over the office and the one who has been entrusted with everyone else’s requests. Otae symbolizes their friends, family. She’s the Yorozuya that Yorozuya left behind.
Otose’s - the one who just wants them home and willing to use the money Hasegawa put down as payment for Yorozuya rent. Otose symbolizes the place to return to family, to Kabukichou.
Anime says he got Otae’s letter. An interesting take! But even I was skeptical of it. I had to see the raws for myself! I’ve now confirmed that the online scanlations never lied.
What do you think? It’s fascinating because these three are actually the closest to the Yorozuya based on lifestyle, ideals and friendship. But maybe in the end the identity of the letter’s owner doesn’t matter because the three blank labeled wishes are essentially the same.
Tumblr media
I love it. Gives me goosebumps.

Just finished the Shogun Assassination Arc... I remember loving the heck out of the Takasugi and Gintoki fight, was one of the best fights I had seen back then, but now I really have a better appreciation for the flashbacks now.
That one tear Gintoki shed that was the last scene Takasugi saw with his left eye...
The "I see, I haven't been expelled yet, have I?" and "Be it killing him or protecting him, they're both my job"😭😭😭

I think it's a very unpopular opinion but I don't understand the hype that Gingama the Final got. Sure! The humor is funny as always, the animation is great and the music is just as great as you'd expect from Does and Spyair, but the plot kinda falls flat to me. Obviously it's not a movie only problem, and it's even worse in the manga, but it's like they set aside everything that made Gintama great so far and turned it into a more generic shounen anime.
Gintoki and the yorozuya are such great characters because they are not the usual main characters group with the "destined" main character, the helpless love interest and the rival, but in the last movie they completely discarded Kagura and Shinpachi to only have Shinsuke and have that last fight (it was sad as hell and good but still not quite what I expected from Gintama and not in a good way) with him without showing the kids. At all. They are walking Yoshida around? And we had a relatively large among of screentime for Tae who didn't do much, except acting like a textbook love interest (Tae?? Of all people?? Anyways). While we had so many interesting ways to fit the kids into this. Utsuru even mentioned Gin's life being "void", the obvious parallel between the school and the Odd Jobs, even just the fact that they were right there and there was no stretch to do to take Shinpachi and Kagura to the fight, while having a wall collapsing on the kids & Tae and Gin just moving on felt...weird, at best. To his credit, in the manga they yell back that they're okay iirc, but in the movie Gintoki just watches back once and that's it.
Also Gin, since the previous part of the arc/semi-finals had this massive guilt complex about resurrecting Yoshida because he knew he was betraying everyone! He didn't show his face to Shinpachi on the bridge, despite knowing that he had put his life on hold waiting for Gintoki to be back, he took all that weird harassment from the girls while pretending to be Shinsuke, etc because he felt guilty about it, but knew he had to help his master. And the kids really really were waiting for him, especially Shinpachi and when they were reunited...it didn't really matter anymore. He doesn't apologise for trying to resurrect a person that he knows has little chances to be good, who tried to murder them more than once, who almost destroyed the world and even killed their dog. And he doesn't apologise for not telling them he was back. And at first it was okay because it was the kind of relationship they had, but after a while just seemed like Gintoki couldn't give a fuck about them, and it felt like such a one sided admiration from their side. Especially when Gintoki walked off to fight Shinsuke and left them doing what? Maybe dealing with a collapsed wall, if they weren't crushed.
And of course the worst treatment was given to Zura like usual. The man who, all the way back to the beginning (literally before volume 5) said shit like "you cannot carry everything alone, I'll help you", who promised to kill Shinsuke in the Benizakura arc, in the same arc promised to stop Gin if he was to stray away from the right path (like you know resurrect they guy who almost destroyed Edo twice), that promised in the Farewell Shinsengumi Arc (If memory serves) that he would not let Gintoki kill Yoshida again, this man just fell down the stairs and the plot moved on. He was the only one of Yoshida students to not be involved in the last fight, and barely in the plot. He also made a point to say he was going to stop them from resurrecting Yoshida and then he just...disappeared.
But overall I am just disappointed that the characters I liked and watched Gintama for were completely forgotten. The Odd Jobs are the most blatant example, but the Shinsengumi had maybe 5 lines out of the 3 of them. Tsukuyo, Kyubei, Sarutobi etc were basically a mob. Zura was done extremely dirty. And all of this only to focus on Shinsuke and Utsuro who were marginal at best. Even Shinsuke, who was a big deal since the Benizakura arc, kind of blended into the Harusame and was not a more prominent villain than the pirates as a whole or Kamui (who appeared? Blink and you'll miss him).
And more especially, the main conflict of Gintama was the humans vs bad aliens. From Shinpachi's introduction, Gintoki's backstory (yes, Oboro and the Shogunate were the main focus, but were only just puppets), the whole premise of the show, up to being the reason Kisuke was a villain at all. And the rest of the cast even acknowledges this and makes a collective speech about rising up to the aliens when they head to the terminal. But then it was all Utsuro? Quite literally all Utsuro, since everyone who took his blood was a puppet acting on his will, and Utsuro was ultimately just human. And I think it could have been a could twist, had it not be for the fact that they had forgotten literally everything else about the show, so it was hard to believe this was a planned twist.
My disappointment is great with this movie, but at least I have the second movie and the Silver Soul arc to cheer me up.
