It takes a good amount of confidence – and probably more than a bit of impudence – for a first-time feature film director to use the same title as arguably the most famous piece of literature in French history. This was a piece of literature that has been filmed multiple times, turned into an iconic musical and is also the subject of multiple straight theatrical productions.
It’s doubly ambitious because this Les Misérables really has little to do with Victor Hugo’s classic novel, other than sharing some basic thematic similarities about overzealous policemen and the uprising of the Parisian underclass against discrimination. However, while the plots are mostly very different, the basic thrust of the plots are not so dissimilar.
The new film even ends with a quote from Hugo’s novel, which points out the basic overarching similarities of the stories: “Remember this, my friends: there are no such things as bad plants or bad men. There are only bad cultivators.”
So, while there are no Jean Valjeans, or Inspector Javerts, or Cosettes in this new Les Misérables, there really is a feel of dragging an older story into a new generation. It can’t exactly be called an update of the plot, but it is a bit of an update of the purpose of Hugo’s novel – a new-millennial look at the tension between the haves and the have-nots of Paris. It even takes place in the same neighborhood. This one just has drones, pop guns, housing developments, drugs, rioting, football, baby lions, smoke grenades and Molotov cocktails.
And bad cultivators.
As far as feel, though the new Les Misérables is more reminiscent of a Parisian version of The Wire. It is a look at the fraying connections between a ghetto neighborhood and the police, who are supposed to watch over the people, but instead use fear to keep the locals in line. It is turning into a tinderbox, with everyone waiting for a possible explosion, like the riots which had happened there just a little over a decade earlier.
Dropped into the maelstrom is Stéphane (Damien Bonnard), a smart and empathetic gendarme who has just been transferred from another (less dramatic) arrondissement. He is hooked up to travel with two local policemen, Chris (played by Alexis Manenti, one of the co-writers of the film), a charismatic but in-your-face Alpha cop. His cool black partner Gwada (Djebril Zonga) tries to straddle the line between cop and native of the neighborhood.
After almost no time working with these two (Les Misérables takes place over a period of two days), Stéphane is concerned about his partners’ attitudes towards their charges and the fraying of relationships with the people.
The tensions grow as a budding juvenile delinquent named Issa (Issa Perica) graduates from petty crimes to stealing a baby lion. As the cops try to bring him in, despite locals protesting and Issa running – or perhaps because of it – one of the cops mistakenly (or so he says) shoots him in the face with buckshot. A local kid captures the whole thing on camera with his drone, and the two veteran cops worry more about getting the footage back than saving Issa’s life.
As everyone – locals, cops, criminals, gangs – runs around trying to take advantage of the situation, the fuse continues to burn and the explosion looms.
In a world where divides are turning into chasms, where “Black Lives Matter” faces off against “Blue Lives Matter,” where the separation between the rich and the poor continues to expand, Les Misérables is a warning, as much as anything else. It can be small, somewhat trivial items which set off blazing passions and violence.
Les Misérables is a stunning and disturbing film which knows the pulse of this particular time in history. I really wish I could say it wasn’t.

Les Misérables
When social deprivation plummets to a level where young lads think nothing of stealing a lion cub from a travelling circus, then you know things have gotten out of hand. Yet this is exactly what’s happening in the Parisian banlieu of Montfermeil, where schisms along all lines are turning high-rise estates into hives of lawlessness.
And when people are unable to live peaceably and harmoniously, and feel that it’s A-Okay to just steal a lion, the police then feel they’re empowered to employ slightly off-the-books oppression in order to retain a semblance of order. Put simply, they can rough people up on their rounds and there’s not a sweet thing that can be done about it.
Ladj Ly’s debut feature, Les Misérables, is ripped from personal experience and set on the infamous housing estate “les Bosquets”. It follows the professional baptism of fire experienced by hair gel addict rookie cop Stéphane (Damien Bonnard) who, on his first day, escapes the clutches of death a number of times. He cruises along with Djebril Zonga’s chill urban warrior, Gwada, and Alexis Manenti’s gale-force rageoholic, Chris, as the team spend their day harassing randos and throwing their weight about like ginned-up rustlers.
The incident with the lion cub occurs, a hubbub ensues, the trigger on a flash ball gun goes off and, in the residual heat of France’s 2018 World Cup victory, a full-scale meltdown seems inevitable. Plus, regular hush-up tactics don’t apply in this case, as a bothersome drone-cam being flown by one of the young residents, catches the whole incident from on high.
The film comes across as a less stylised, less self-consciously poetic (but no less effective) update of Mathieu Kassovitz’ powder-keg 1995 feature, La Haine, which introduced the world to the horrors of daily life outside the snow globe of central Paris.
It’s the type of film you’d expect concerned politicos to watch and then solemnly announce that they now understand the work that needs to be done in areas rife with poverty, while also acknowledging the institutional rot within the police force – and then take no further action. In his direction and writing (the latter completed in collaboration with Giordano Gederlini and Alexis Manenti), Ly apportions blame fairly, and to be honest, there’s no one here to root for save the hapless Stéphane, and even he turns the odd blind eye to Chris’ berserko outbursts.
Aside from its admirable sense of moral objectivity, the film also purrs along nicely as a slick thriller that arrives at a satisfyingly bombastic climax in which fireworks are repurposed as ad hoc bazookas in order to send those dirty pigs a skin-searing lesson they’ll never forget. If the film has an issue, it’s that the plotting is too fastidious, and everything fits together a little too neatly.
The chaotic aspect of the situation is captured in the many bouts of group shouting, but then most of the supporting cast operate like they would in a genre film rather than real life. Plus, the moment where the drone just happens to hover over the pivotal altercation does feel a tad far-fetched, even with the reams of portentous build-up that is front-loaded into the plot.

A francia vidékről a fővárosba költöző Stephane csatlakozik a város legzűrösebb kerületében szolgáló civil ruhás bűnügyisekhez. Csakhamar ráébred, hogy társai – a fajgyűlölő Chris és az afrikai, mohamedán vallású Gwanda – sajátos módon alkalmazzák a munkájukra vonatkozó előírásokat, sok esetben indokolatlan tettlegességre is sor kerül. A külvárosi bűnfészekben szinte lehetetlen felvenni a harcot a sumákolással és a bandákkal, itt ugyanis a bűnszervezetek garantálják a környék ideiglenes nyugalmát egymás közti rövid távú egyezségeikkel. Egyetlen melléfogás, és az egész negyed egy bandaháború közepén találja magát.
A sokkoló film cselekményének helyszíne Párizs szegénységtől sújtott, legveszedelmesebb városrésze. Az azonos című rövidfilm alapján készült Nyomorultakat a 2005-ös rendbontás ihlette. A Cannes-i Filmfesztiválon mutatták be, ahol a zsűri díjával jutalmazták. Idegen nyelvű film kategóriában Oscar-díjra is jelölték, továbbá az Európai filmdíjra is jelölést kapott legjobb film, legjobb elsőfilm és legjobb forgatókönyv kategóriában.
