6. What is your darkest fear about writing?

I guess the obvious one is that my writing isn't very good. Or, more specifically, that I'm not actually good at conveying the things I want to convey. Are these characters actually sounding distinct from each other, or do they all sound exactly the same? I can say that I Eliot is charming and fake, that Morgan is smart but impulsive, that Jacob is patient and well-reasoned, but like... does any of that actually come across in my writing?

I've mentioned it before on here I think (and definitely i bring it up too much on my main lol) but I used to be on an actual play podcast, and the way people reacted to me/my characters honestly really shook my confidence in my own storytelling abilities. My character was a bard (so, high charisma) and i tried to play her as smart and charming even though she was also kind of a trashy mess, and everyone from my GM to our audience insisted she was dumb and everyone hated her?? The way people treated me made me really afraid to actually post any creative work ever again, because people would hold me to impossible standards, make me justify the decisions of my costars, and other than that, entirely ignored me. After the show ended (and we deleted all the episodes lol syonara you weeaboo shits, etc) i really felt like i was never going to be creative in public again, because I just didn't have the emotional fortitude to withstand it. If people were only going to pay attention when they wanted me to explain why a man I worked with did something problematic (I don't know! Ask him!), and otherwise, pretend I'm not there at all, like... why bother, you know?

So I guess my other fear is having to go through that again. It took me 4 years after the end of that show to start posting Book of Red Murder because i was genuinely just too afraid. (Thankfully everyone has been very nice, so thank u all)

7. What is your deepest joy about writing?

sometimes u make an oc kiss and thats pretty good. and sometimes you share ur writing and people start calling you names because you made your fake little guys sad and u get to laugh at them

35. What’s your favorite writing rule to smash into smithereens?

i can't really think of any!! i love properly implementing writing rules and when i fuck it up, i get sad. of course, it depends on what you define as "writing rules", because i love using sentences fragments but i also hate when a gun appears in act one but doesnt go off by act 3, yknow?

#if anyone was curious the problematic thing i was forced to account for most often #was our gm giving a greedy character a like. well idk how to describe it but as a 'greedy jew voice'#and on several different occasions i was asked why he did that #like i don't know!! i don't know why he did that!!!#i can tell you why we didnt stop him in the moment #because 1. the dynamics of of recording made stopping things really really uncomfortable #(this is why i have problems with the X card conceptually. making everying screech to a halt so you can announce your discomfort feels BAD)#and 2. the guy who did the voice. pur gm. was literally the only jewish person on the podcast #we thought he probably knew what he was doing!!#and he didnt need a bunch of goyim telling him he hates the jews!#anyway that was always very uncomfortable and frankly i never forgave him #but i never forgave him for a lot of things

14 - The Fourteen Words, a Neo-Nazi slogan

14/23 - A number representing the Southern Brotherhood, an Alabama prison gang

On Jew-Coding

thinking about like, jew-coding, and how often people point to whatever greedy little assholes exist in any given media property and go ‘those are an antisemetic depiction of jews’ and it’s like, thanks, i guess, but why were you connecting those two dots in the first place, so here we go! quick and messy guide to checking if a character is jew-coded in a Good or Bad way.

BAD JEW-CODING i.e, if this makes you think a character is jewish, you’re the asshole here (and possibly so is their writer):

-ugly little creature

-greedy

-thick accent

-mercantile and mercenary

-hateful

-conniving / scheming / tricksy

-cowardly

-unusually ‘swarthy’/ oddly colored

-big strident violent females and cringing wimpy little males

shadow council of beardy elders

-from new york (solidarity shout out to italians)

NEUTRAL JEW-CODING i.e, these are just common characteristics of many jews you can meet in real life:

-short

-curly hair

-regarded with confusion and suspicion by Normal Folks

-from new york

GOOD JEW-CODING i.e these character traits reflect real jewish values and which jewish people will themselves enthusiastically Vibe With:

-argumentative, curious, always searching and questioning

-kvetching, i.e, extended but humorous bitching about every last little thing

-sardonic and mocking sense of humor / punches up (and well above their weight class)

-extremely difficult to control and suppress, refusing to play by rules that don’t serve them

-defiant, rebellious, even spiteful towards agents of authority

-involved in arts, crafts, science, and social reform, multidisciplinary

-surviving and even thriving in a marginalized social status

-creative and incredibly annoying nonviolent resistance

-believes in restitution, not redemption, i.e transgressors should attempt to fix what they have broken rather than be forced to suffer an equal amount to the harm they have dealt

-plays with binaries but doesn’t take them very seriously; fluid and creative approach to if/then black/white good/bad dichotomies

-values wealth specifically as a way to safeguard life, health, safety, and justice; does not ever value material goods above a sentient life

-quietly but perpetually Big Mad

Jews are gerrymandered out of leftist and liberal social justice.

Jews are exempt from the fight against cultural appropriation, despite the fact that the two largest religions in the world built their faiths on the backs of stolen Jewish religious texts.

Jews are exempt from the fight against whitewashing, despite the fact that the highest-grossing film franchise of all time is based on the work of Jews, and the film executives make the conscious and clear choice to erase the Jewish identities of every Jewish or Jewish-coded character brought to the screen.

Jews are exempt from the fight against bigotry, despite the fact that a Jewish person in the USA is statistically more likely to experience a hate crime during their lifetime than any other racial or ethnic group per capita-- and that's based on two-year-old statistics. The number of anti-Jewish hate crimes in the US goes up drastically each year.

Every single time a Jewish person expresses their concerns about anti-Jewish behaviours in a non-Jewish space, we get shut down. We are told that "it's not that big a deal", we get told we're "overreacting", and we get told that it's "fine, because we're all white and integrated, so who cares".

The most harmful anti-Jewish narrative does not come from the political right. It is not a narrative that paints Jews as crooked, greedy or vile. It is not a narrative that drives antisemites to harm us.

The most harmful anti-Jewish narrative comes from the political left. It is the narrative that paints Jews as universally successful, "caucasian", and free from discrimination. It is the narrative that discourages anti-racists from defending us against harm.

Holocaust education failed when people went away thinking that the Holocaust

a) Was a surprise

b) Wasn't preventable

c) Can never happen again.

They also seem to think that they would be the heroes saving people and fighting back in the scenario, but y'know....those people were a tiny minority. The majority of people truly believed that Jews and Rroma were a disease on their society and wanted them exterminated. And yes, they believed these things with sugar-coated social justice terms.

Jews weren't Christ-killers anymore, they were "greedy outsiders who have dual-loyalty and corrupt the economy, disenfranchising the poor."

Rroma weren't devil-worshipping heathens anymore, they were "wandering people with no morals who prey on vulnerable people and trespass."

Killing and torturing disabled people wasn't exorcism anymore, it was "furthering society by eliminating the burdens on it" and "sparing those poor souls the horror of living" and "advancing scientific research."

Many progressive and leftist and liberal people ended up being complicit and even active members of the Nazi party because of the way the xenophobic and bigoted ideologies of the parties were painted in "progressive" vocabulary.

Think about how many times you've uncritically reblogged and shared posts about the "global elite" or "secret pedophile ring" or "X country eliminated Down Syndrome" or "scientists are so close to finding the autism gene" or "religion is poison" or "overpopulation".

You are not immune.

Not everyone may have personally manned the gas chambers, but they certainly didn't stand in Hitler's way.

Holocaust education isn't enough until it teaches that.
