The wild history of Munnar is a story of pristine forests and wild animals.

The wild side of Munnar is incomplete without emphasizing chinnar wildlife sanctuary.

The Chinnar forest is home to different variety of mammals, reptiles, birds, and butterflies.

The star among them is the Grizzled Giant Squirrel, a large tree squirrel found only in the riparian forest of the Chinnar Sanctuary. The rare Manjampatti White Bison, a gaur noted for its distinctive ash-grey color, are other special inhabitants spotted in the sanctuary.

Wild animals, up to 100 in some families can be seen in the Munnar National Park. Huge wild elephants and gaur are found . Elephants are there during the early morning and late afternoon, during the day for a few minutes, and then again in the evening. Wild cats and small rodents can be seen in any season. We can also find here muntjac deer and wild boar.

Nestled amidst the lush and verdant Chinnar forests, this small gem is a sanctuary for rare and endangered species.

The park is richly populated with a wide array of indigenous flora and fauna which makes it a popular tourist destination. One can spot Indian Elephant, Panther, Gaur, Spotted Deer, Monkey, Sambar, and Grizzled Giant Squirrel here as part of Marayoor tour packages.

About 130 species of birds are found in the park including many endemic birds like Nilgiri Pipit, Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, White Bellied Shortwing, Nilgiri Verditer Flycatcher and Blue Rock thrush etc. Pambadum Shola National Park is another hotspot for bird watchers at Munnar; you can spot Nilgiri Wood pigeon, White-bellied Shortwing and Vernal Hanging Parrot among others at here.

The Western Ghats National Park is home to many rare varieties of plants, including many that are endemic to the area. Recently, a rare species of orchid named Brachycory this wightii has been discovered there.
